State park within easy 10 minutes from downtown, well kept walking trails around a deep, quiet stocked lake Gertrude, thru verdant forests, and along a rocky driftwood strewn shore. There is a daily use fee 5$ a day or 50$ for the season available on line. Very dog friendly with the occasional rabbit and bear sightings. If your worried about it stop at Walmart on the way and buy some bear spray.

This area is diverse in topography with steep cliffs, dense spruce forest and rocky beaches. Used in WW2 as a fortification, concrete bunkers can be seen facing the ocean. In the water below an incredible variety of creatures can be found Sea Otters, Whales and Seals just to name a few. Gertrude Lake lies in the center speckled with waterfowl and trout swimming below. During low tide you can explore the coastline and find a wide variety of ocean life. This park costs 5$ for Daypass or 50$ for yearly Alaska State Park Pass.

The World War II battlements are interesting and pretty, the view from the cliffs on a clear day is impressive. There were whales just off shore (June). Enjoyed all the trails and the wildflowers. The cliffs are sheer and beautiful. An unexpected find!

Full of old historic fort buildings that have been taken over by the forest. Perfect place to escape and enjoy nature. It also has a beautiful outlook point of the harbor and sea side cliffs.

I love Abercrombie because there are so many different trails you can take. The trail is easy to moderate depending on which way you go, theres a part of the trail where you can let your dog(s) off the leash, and you can choose to walk by the ocean or more inland and walk around the lake. The lake has great places where you can shore up and go swimming. Theres even a portion where youre close to both the ocean and the lake so you can swim in either.Picnic spots can be found on every trail so you can take a break on real chairs. If you want to hold a party, youre able to rent their pavilion for a fair price. The pavilion has a covered picnic area, fire pit, and bathrooms. For recreation, there is also a volleyball court and a horseshoe pit. Enough room for adults, kids, and all the games you want to play.

Such a beautiful piece of history. It was great to learn about the spotlight and the machine gun crews and how they worked together to ward off enemy ships during WWII. It was amazing to be able to walk the area where those soldiers stood watch.

Trails are groomed and maintained regularly. There are several options for trails around the park. They definately provide a good cardio workout and the scenery cant be beat. Occasionally a bear or 3 will also enjoy the park, the rangers on site will pist warnings and there are camp grounds and picnic areas as well as an outdoor recreation area for hosting outdoor functions or company picnics etc.

Moved to California in June and Abercrombie Park has to be my most missed spot in Kodiak. Dont take forgranted those walks around lake Gertrude, when the loons are out singing to you or it just .
