Great big Beach peaceful with white sands and a life guard on duty. If you feel brave enough to venture to little beach and enjoy the drum circle be sure you can hike up and over the lava rocks. Once at little beach it is a clothing optional beach. Sundays are the drum circle tribal experience with local drummers and some from all over the World.
Great huge sandy beach with calm waves. Perfect place to unwind and relax for the day. Some great spots to go if you want to get away from the crowds. Just be aware if you walk along the beach to the northern end. There is a cliff that has rough terrain but accessible for all ages. Once you get to the top and start going over to the other beach this is a nudist side, so beware if you bring the keikis with you.
Get barreled and slammed here great beach all around but not for visitors or small children to go in water during a swell it is known for its record of neck, back and many other injuries caused by gnarly shore break. Fun tho if you grew up riding this break
Gorgeous white sand beachThis is a stretch of the most beautiful beaches. The parking is plenty at the public beach. There is no restroom access but rather a port-a-potty. If you are adventurous, hike a few steps north and you will be rewarded with more beaches. Then that goes on for a couple more. So it is nice to walk around. The water is not as choppy as what’s up north or at the southern tip of the island. Although strong waves are possible. There is not much shade so bring your travel umbrella if you would like a shade.Happy travels.
Great view, clean water, found parking. Good 4 min walk parkinglot to beach. Sharp twigs in sand so bring shoes to walk then switch to slipper and bring chair, umbrella, sunblock super sunny
According to the brochures, this is the most photographed beach in Maui and I can see why.The beach is expansive. The sand is extremely soft to the point where you sink in and the water is a beautiful blue-green. There are low trees at the back end of the beach that you can take pictures with for that tropical beach feel. When I went, the waves were high near the shore so I did not stay long. But it looked like a fun place to boogie board.
Visited the beach - very low key, very beautiful, very much recommended.
Beautiful, clean but big waves and gets deep fast
Most beautiful place to visit great nude beach very unpopulated
One of my favorite beaches! Especially on Sunday for the parties!
This is one of the best beaches on Maui. You can go for a nice long walk, swim, surf, snorkel and enjoy a beautiful Sunset here too. The sand is nice and soft and there arent many rocks.
Very long beautiful, but no facilities.
Multiple beach access, porta-potties, $5 parking, food trucks, soft sand, tide pools, easily one of the best beaches. Be careful with the kiddos the waves can pound.
Big beach! lots of sand and long! excelent beach to chill put on and swim, or skim board, not really for boogie boarding or surfing. Enjoy
One of my favorite beaches! Clear blue waters. Waves can get wild but beautiful, clean place to beach bum it. Lifegaurds are on duty. Parking lot available.
Beautiful beach, able to see whales right off shore in season! Good snorkeling with turtles on both ends of the beach by the rocks/reef.
Big beach 3rd entrance best bodyboard spot.
Beautiful beach. It was super windy the day we were there but the beach is gorgeous. There is paid parking but if you get there early enough you can park for free on the road outside the state park entrance, not far to walk, you can drop one person off at the beach with you cooler and chairs then go park.
A beautiful beach! Can have big waves at times and definitely dont go to the infamous little beach if you dont wanna see old naked people
A large, sandy beach near Kihei. The waves here are not too strong, so its a good place for a swim. As its sandy, not the right place for snorkeling, if youre into that. Sunsets here are very nice because the beach is facing West, so you have the sun setting on the ocean with the beach as foreground. Parking is quite limited, can get difficult to find a spot in busy hours.
Beautiful soft sand on a long and wide beach with good waves for boogie boarding or surfing I guess! Lots of parking but busy on weekends, only washrooms are porta potty’s and no showers to clean off sand . I saw two food trucks at first entrance, long walk to beach from first parking lot, there’s street parking too and a 2nd entrance and two lifeguard booths from 8am-4:30pm. I saw some large trees for shade but they are further back from beach
This beach is the reason Ill be coming back to Maui. The staff there are friendly. The beach is beautiful and clean. The people who are there just hanging out leave you alone. The ocean is great and the waves, are a bit harsh, but if youre not messing around and acting stupid youll be fine.
Extremely dangerous. If your concierge tells you to come here ask them how long they have lived here.
Best beaches in South Maui, Upcountry area.
Such a beautiful beach! There are no extras here, so be prepared! No bath rooms as in Also be well prepared to be out before dark so your car doesnt get trapped in the parking lot. If you are feeling a little extra head over to little beach on Sunday night for an experience of a lifetime!
Excellent beach.. though it was very hot and sunny, we had good time. Beach is peaceful and very calm.. water is crystal clear and great place for photoshoots and surfing.
This beach is one of the best I have ever seen. The sand is white and wide. The tires are calm and the slopes are gentle. On top of that we found parking very easily. If youre into nice and expensive houses then north of the park is your place to look.
Little Beach is now my favourite clothing optional beach in America or Canada. Clean beach with a lot of whales to see. Easy to get from free parking to the beach. Fun starts early. Parking is a ways away on the weekends though after noon. When I was there in December 2017 a huge turtle lounged on the sand for a few hours. Small birds can be hand fed too. If very windy stay away from the trees in the back. There is also a taco truck in the parking lot. Easy access by walking across the back of Big Beach, a textile beach. Many people vacation here every year.
Awesome beach for chilling. Swimming and snorkeling not recommended due to the extreme shorebreaks. Advanced swimmers and surfers only but still risky. A 27 year old male was rescue yesterday with injuries and a male in his 40s almost had to be pulled in. There are lifeguards on duty at the incredible beach park.
Awesome state park - so many great beaches. Big beach was our favorite. The black sand beach was really awesome as well. Definitely worth exploring while on Maui! Our friend told us to climb the rocks to the left of the black sand beach and crawl through a small cave to see a red sand beach. Fun little adventure and very easy climb for an extra view!
The big beach is a really nice place to chill, waves are awesome there is a lifeguard and food trucks at the entrance, parking is free. But a way better experience is to climb that little hill at the end and go to the little beach at the other side of it, every Sunday they are doing a Hawaiian style party with drums didges, and more. Thats a nude beach so you might dont wanna go there with the whole family. But for friends vacation would be a perfect place to stop at. By the way, the view from that little hill that you have to get on to pass to the little beach is just beautiful. Check it out!
Love this beach! Excellent swimming and snorkeling.
Beautiful beaches and mountain in South Maui. Was our first day and was hard to beat. Good surf. Try the food truck at the gate!
Love this place! Soft sand, mellow surf and great snorkeling
There are a couple of beaches there. Big beach and little beach. There are both beautiful with clear water.Little beach is a nude beach so if thats not your thing, dont go there. It is a little difficult to get to as well but well worth it because it is more intimate. On Sundays there is a drum circle.Note the that the park opens at 6am and closes at 8pm. No alcohol and no cigarettes.
Ample parking and access to Big beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Maui. This beach has beautiful golden sand coastline and is a really good spot to view sunset.
Very cool, nice hike with an unbelievable view of the ocean and lava flows. Cool lighthouse down the beach along with some nice beaches. Kids can do the hike but should be careful around the rocks
Theres more than Big Beach, Little Beach, porta-potties and Food trucks. Incredible views if you choose to hike the Puu Olai Mountains!! There are unofficial trails, just head into to bush and hike! I would recommend a hiking stick, lots of water and sturdy shoes. I took a swimsuit and towel in case I ended up on a beach, which I did. Without knowing exactly where I was headed, I ended up smack dab in the middle of Little Beach where the water and waves are always perfect! Challenging and wonderful hike!
Beautiful sand beach with lifeguards. Good shorebreak waves to bodysurf on. Its a short walk down to the beach from the public parking lot. A little out of the way, but worth it.
The state park has 2 great beaches. Big Beach a very wide family beach and little beach just over a small ridge a mixed nude beach for gays and heterosexuals.
Was pretty cool to see the surfers with the wild chickens. Fun place to go if you want to enjoy the sun or walk the beach.
Why secluded, but easy to get to. There was only a handful of people there. The map says white sand beach, but it’s black sand.
In our opinion one of the most beautifull beaches of Hawaii. Clear and clean blue water, no rocks! Waves are great but Could be dangerous.
Beautiful beach, big wave to be careful of !
Very beatiful beach with lots of parking. The sunset is very beatiful to watch from here. When it is crowded, people do park along roadside. You can enjoy the food at food trucks here.
We took surfing lessons here on our honeymoon. I imagine it’s also fun when you are not falling off the board because you’ve never done it before!
Fun body surfing. Go over the rocks to little beach enjoy time away from lifeguards and conventional crowd.
Little Beach is SPECTACULAR!
This is a great fun beach plenty of good send and amazing views.
Dont expect a well-marked trail or even beach swimming, but you dont need them! Its beautiful!Bush-whacked to the top of the peak, walked around the point and finished with a fish taco. Beautiful!
One of the best beaches on the island Ive been to. Just be careful of the quick beach break, as it has been known to turn people on their heads and cause head and neck injuries, especially during larger surf.
Fave Maui beach... these waves are crystal clear & the sand!
Beautiful beach area for kids and family.
Big beach is excellent. Dangerous waves and a bit of solitude especially early in the morning. Little beach is also very nice and worth the little climb to see.
Worth it. Beautiful and the lava fields are incredible.
Amazing beach and watched by lifeguards. Would recommend.
Big Beach was very nice. Very strong waves the day we went.
Parking is tough. Theres alot of mansions in the way of the public beach access :(
Littles beach is better, this beach has great surfing but is super dangerous. Lots of public intoxication but definitely a better beach than anything north shore or lahaina has to offer.Tied with kaanapali for comfort level
The best beach Ive been to on Maui. Clean, beautiful, and warm blue waters with soft sand.
Beautiful beach. Crystal clear blue water and perfect soft sand beach. Easy parking and easy to navnaviga to.
Always a great beach.Sometimes waves are rough. Be careful
Long sandy beaches and nice waters.
Nice beach with lifeguards. Good sized shore break while we were there so cannot recommend it for families with young children.
Makena is know for its shore breaks and big beach, little beach. On a day whit high swells big beach waves are fun to body board. On a calm day swimming here is great with clear water.
Amazing, great views, awesome whale watching -
This is a beautiful beach. The waves are not to be messed with if you are not a pro. Listen to the warnings and dont attempt to body board if its your first time. Many have broke their necks and backs just from getting crushed by a wave they didnt see coming. When the wave comes at you, try and swim under and towards it, dont just duck down you could get caught up and hurt. It has port a pottys, and food trucks in the first entrance parking lot. There are no showers or restrooms so come prepared. The waves are too strong to fish here, and youll probably see some turtles like we did. The sand is soft and the water on most days is very clear and bright blue. During the summer the sun sets to the far right. Charge your cell phones and cameras and stay after 630 for some great photos!Pack some jugs of water to rinse off at your car. Bring snacks, water, sandals, and maybe an umbrella. Remember to use the natural sunscreens that wont kill the coral reef. Lil beach is on the other side of the hill, and is a short walk from big beach. Big beach is great for couples, or a family. It has big waves and has such a beautiful view. No buildings in site!(Lil beach is all nude and mostly the much older adults, with smaller waves)Youll have fun at big beach. Just be safe and pay attention to the waves, and the lifeguards. Sit back, relax and get a tan!
Where we were married 20 years ago...love this spot....great beach.
Huge sandy beach, no reef. Great place for swimming and splashing in the surf!
Love Big beach! Lots of space, beautiful views and clear water!
No charge for parking, quiet, beautiful water but the waves can be intense for kids.
This beach had a nice entrance cut through the woods and a gorgeous view both from the beach and of it. Parking facilites were nice. The only drawback was there werent any showers, but a 2 minute drive up the road took us to another beach with nicer bathrooms and showers.
Huge beach with lots of space to spread out, even when its busy. Awesome swim spot too.
Very Beautiful beach... just be careful of shore break. Know what your doing. I got thrown around pretty bad and had whiplash for awhile. Taught me the power of the ocean and respect for her.
I loved the waves at this beach, I have never seen bigger waves!!!!
Beautiful place.
Big beach was and is awesome! Be careful of the waves they can be punishing.
Big Beach is a truly beautiful beach on a calm day like when I took this picture. On some days though, it will drag you out with its virocious waves, believe me I know. My wife was dragged out two years ago by a wave after getting too close. Thank goodness she is a fairly strong swimmer. Check the shore report online. The Snorkel Store in Maui posts a daily report on their website. Not a recommendation, just they post a very good report everyday.
Best beach on the south shore of Maui.
Great beach to visit in Maui. While you cant go wrong with any beach in Maui, this was our favorite. Note that parking can be tricky as the lot was almost full at 2 pm and requires a 5$ parking fee.
Over the Mt. Much better waves at Makena break at shore line dangerous for novice swimmers.
A i hope the payment for parking is not for local people.
The nicest beach we have been to in Maui. Heavier waves hitting the shore but there are some calmer areas too. Lots of room to sit along the beach. Only outhouses available (that we found). Go early or park far.
Hard to find a bad beach around that area. Mākena was a very beautiful one though. Nice fine sand and very blue clear waters.
We felt this was the best beach of our entire vacation. We didnt have plans to go here until the last minute. We ended up staying all day and wished we had gone to this beach the first day so we would have known to go back. Great sand, super clear water, lots of fish deeper out, and even turtles. Nice steep entrance into water so you can get a little wave from the surf without going very far from the dry sand. The last part was important for the kids who wanted to play in the surf, but could easily be rescued because they were just feet from the dry sand. I am planning my next trip to this island with the idea of going back for this beach.
So much to see at this beach. The sand and water were fantastic.
So nice without a ton of people
Big beach is gorgeous
One of my all-time favorite Beaches ever!!! Known as BIG BEACH by Locals, dont get sidetracked by the throngs of Tourists vering to the Right, Thats Little Beach a (Nude Beach) Go Left Young Man! To Me, This IS the Best Beach on MAUI! Along with Barking Sands on Kauai and some Terrific Lesser Known Beaches on Molokai, YOU Cant go wrong!️
Nice black sand beach. Not too crowded. Great views of Maalaea coastline and the windmill farm.
Nice park, nonresidents need to pay parking fee. However didnt see anyone checking.
Clean beach well maintained
