We were greeted by staff who answered our many questions. The artifacts on display and movie were very interesting. Ive wanted to see the site of this horrific event since reading the David McCullough book, but wondered if the museum would be worth the while. I am glad I went!

This place is small but cute. You learn a lot even though there isnt that much there. I would suggest to anyone that goes that if your not to squimish then try watching the movie there. It really puts things in perspective. Also once you walk out the front door take a look at the building right in front of it. You can see the old cracks in. The wall where you see new wall had to be put in because of the floods.

While the title says Flood Museum this review is for the Incline-not the museum. Really liked this place. Good food. Good drinks. Great view of Johnstown and the river valley. The ride up is fun and you can see all the machinery up at the top.

Our group visited the Johnstown Flood Museum on Sunday, June 28, 2020. We made arrangements in advance to have a guided tour at 12:00 noon. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our guide was Dave, a direct descendant of family who suffered loss from the flood. Dave was warm, personable, and knowledgeable. Unlike many tours that have guides who are just deliver a canned presentation, Dave seemed to speak from the heart. You can tell he loves his town and its heritage. The members of Susquehanna Valley Spyder Ryders left the museum with a greater understanding of the how the 1889 flood affected the people and region. Dave answered all of our questions thoroughly.Highly recommended for anyone who loves local history!

Read the book first before going. And be sure to visit the huge cavity that was once a man made lake for the very rich and powerful peopleAs you stand before the mock rendition of the pile up where the rivers met imagine a 40 foot wall of water rushing down while people slept in their beds. A tsunami that washed away a,train. A pile up of burning degree, cows, and bodies. It is a place to give reverence to the 3,000 souls who never should have died that way. I am so glad I went there.

Great Museum Guide. This is a must see museum. The preventable flood was a series of human errors compounded by a significant weather event. One of the saddest facts was were 80 souls that had survived the flood in their swept away homes only to get trapped in the 30 acre debris field created by the railroad bridge abutments then caught fire and consumed the survivors. Note, there is a designated free parking area very near the museum. Follow the signs.

The displays gave such a great understanding of what happened. The work put into it was very moving, too. When we got home, my boys wanted to try to build a lake and dam model of their own to explore more. Anytime they gain a fuller understanding of the world around them, as well as the consequences of others actions, I consider it time well spent!

A part of American history I had been wanting to know more about. Very somber experience but well worth learning about it, which was never taught in history class in the midwest. The survivors were resilient after everything they had been through and rebult their town. Very few of the wealthy owned up to their negligence and simply left, never ro return. The film, flood display and artifacts tell it all.

This Museum told the story of the Johnstown Flood very well. The documentary was well done. The museum offers a variety of displays, some interactive. Nice museum outlining the historic Johnstown 1889 flood, the deadliest flood in the nation and the worst PA disaster to date, killing over 2200 people. Dont miss the documentary film which won an Academy Award. Also, there is an Oklahoma house right outside and part of the museum which was one of the temporary houses used for those whose homes had been destroyed.

Worth the visit and the donation for entrance fee but the exhibt has seen better days. This small museum is in the Johnstown library building and should not be missed. Only takes a short amount of time to view the diorama, photos and video presentation, but well worth the modest admission fee. An excellent accompaniment to the books by David McCollough and Al Roker. Striking illustration of the power of nature and the irresponsibility of the privileged class. Combine with a visit to the National Memorial in South Fork nearby for an extraordinary history lesson.

I expected more from such an event. Not much new in the museum and a bit dated. Film is nice, but you can see it all on PBS or similar. The surrounding area has little to offer. it is nice to go here once, but I would never come back unless forced to do so. The sounding area is dull and a bit scary looking. No real restaurants or anything in town. You will enjoy PBS more than this museum.

The Johnstown Flood Museum (not to be confused with the Johnstown National Flood Memorial 15 miles away) is housed in the former Carnegie Library. This was the 4th Carnegie Library donated, and the 3rd to be completed. He made the offer 6 months after the 1889 flood, and the building was completed almost exactly two years later. It remained a public library until about 1971, and then was gradually converted into the Flood Museum. The Museum (and the building) could stand renovation, and that is now a major project of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association, which owns and operates it. The film there is by Charles Guggenheim, and won the Academy Award for best short documentary in 1989. The main exhibits are on the ground flood; the film, and photos of Johnstown prior to the 1889 flood are on the second floor. Often overlooked is the third floor, which was the gymnasium for the Carnegie Library and has a number of original features, including the elevated running track and beadboard pine paneling on the walls.
