Exceeded expectations! Very well done section on immigration to Johnstown. Too much reading. Also loved the movie on the making of steel. Yes, I would recommend!
The Childrens Floor is staffed by some of the kindest and most enthusiastic individuals you will ever meet. It is a great place for imaginative play. They just added a new imaginative play section where kids can pretend to be dentists, vets, beauticians, florists, firefighters, coal miners, scientists, and other professions. Their play kitchen and store are well stocked with goodies to keep little ones entertained. There is a section where kids can experiment with plumbing and construct a dam using different materials. The coal mine slide is well executed and a lot of fun too!***People using mobility aids, like walkers or wheelchairs, and strollers may want to call ahead. Elevator has been undergoing repairs off and on. When we recently went it was out of order.****
Great material and use of technology. Couple it with the flood museum and the dam state park site you have a full day and a complete story
Very interesting history about steel progress and also immigration. Also interesting childrens discovery center.
My husband and I took our two boys (8 and 9) on Sunday and it was a lot of fun. There was plenty of parking and the building itself is beautiful. The other exhibits were pretty interesting but the children’s museum is by far the best part. My boys enjoyed the mining exhibit with the slide the best. They enjoyed finding Morley all over and getting their scavenger hunt prize. We can’t wait to go back.
A terrific venue for events of all sizes (complete with a Museum!) in the heart of one of Americas Historical Steel Towns. If youre staying or passing through, spend some time getting an introduction to what it takes to build a Nation. Facilities available for conferences, presentations and gatherings too!
Excellent, great way to spend a day! Awesome family trip for knowledge.
Amazing. The childrens museum is amazing. Personally, I could have explored the other floors for hours. Truly a gem.
Fantastic, engaging museum with three floors of information. A meticulous, thoughtful childrens floor. The current first-floor exhibit on immigrants is especially relevant in this politically charged time. Includes modern museum aspects such as bar code readers to personalize the experience.
We had a great time here. The museum was much larger than I thought it would be. One floor is dedicated solely to kids! There was even a Slavic festival there!! I think I put the pictures up in a separate post.
From 4 years to 70 a good time was had by all. A great interactive immigrant section put you back in time. Play is a childs work and the areas from dam and city building to coal mining and everyday role playing were enjoyed by all. Wish we had more time to spend here.
A little hard to navigate but very educational and my child had a bunch of fun. She explored the 1st and 3rd floors. She had spent the most amount of time at the childrens coal mine. She had tried on the outfits and played with the shovels, even kept going down the slide. I dont recommend adults trying the slide, even though they are allowed, because it is a right squeeze getting up to the slide.
Really interesting museum focusing on the immigrant experience in Johnstown without sugar-coating it. Nice discovery floor for kids, although some of the stations are in need of repair.
Very informative A fun place for interaction. A great place for kids to discover things.
Interaction helps me understand and learn about the history here and how that applies to today. Very well done
Great place for the kids a lot of hands on activities and learning experience
First time i had been there. I didnt realize how huge it is. I went to see the Holocaust exhibit. Its great they can bring in traveling exhibits. It was great!
Very interesting great history lessons everything from imagination to the life steel in Johnstown
It was nice to see, but very quick walk through. Very educational, but we spent like 30 minutes there and saw everything.
The Deadly Medicine exhibit on the holocaust was really interesting. Tracking the German research on medicine through the Nazi Final Solution, it had a lot of detail about what became a dark time in history. Info about positive eugenics getting twisted into forced sterilization, human experimentation and murder, it was a thought-provoking exhibit.
VERY interesting history of immigration. An eye opener for todays times. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
If you see an event that interests you I highly recommend going. Its a quaint little but of culture and history plus it helps out the area preservation efforts.
Love history, is this place has alot if it. Great pictures and lots of info... Cant know where your going if you dont know where you come from....
Nice place and very accommadating. Opened on Monday just for our homeschool group!
Really nice place to take your children and have them learn the history of the city they are grown up in. There is alot to learn about Johnstown, everything from the devastating flood to the 1977 flood. It is an all around great place to learn how the small city of Johnstown came to be. The steel mills that was booming in the 60s n 70s to the film all the rights moves With Tom Cruise, which a lot was filmed in the Point Stadium. Id absolutely recommend taking a weekend with the family to the Discovery Center and learning a thing or two!!
Excellent production of an often untold history of America.
A truly stupendous museum. Their exhibit on immigration is one of the best curated exhibits I’ve seen in my life!
Best Slavic fest this side of the old country Naz drave
A must visit to discover the history of Johnstown apart from the flood. Is descriptive in how it grew to be an industrial powerhouse, the history of steel making, and the promise of a more promising way of life for peoples of differing cultures and ethnic backgrounds and how Johnstown still reflects this diverse background. Also has traveling exhibits that make multiple visits a must.
Kids loved the childrens floor. The first floor held the whole familys interest. We were told the cafe no longer operates. The iron and steel galleries had fantastic photos of the local industry in decline, but it bored the kids to tears. A few of the exhibits were in disrepair or nonfunctional, but Ive yet to visit a museum where all of the exhibits worked. The staff was excellent and the kids favorite part was the coal mine.
Wonderful museum for children. Needs a few small repairs.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!! My son had a blast at the childrens museum. There was never a boring moment. The whole place is a fun way of learning for the entire family. Kid Tested. Mother Approved!!!
Nice atmosphere fun and friendly staff
Very knowledgeable staff. They know their history. I went for the Holocaust events and learned a lot.
Best museum in town. Amazing kids section and good exhibits for everyone else.
Always enjoyed last Fridays at 4th Floor Ethnic Club
Sobering Holocaust Medical Exhibit. Very nice museum with awesome local history exhibits
Great film about the steel making process.
Really cool museum. A few of the exhibits werent working properly, but otherwise we very much enjoyed the visit. Learned a lot about the areas history and the kids loved the 3rd floor.
I forget how awesome this place is. A must for any history buff visiting Johnstown.
Interactive. Kids love the childrens area.
I was there for the Slavic Festival. I was the woman who taught the Pierogi class. But I stayed for the festival and had a wonderful time
It was amazing! The history alone is great and its kid friendly my grands had a blast!
We visited the childrens museum on the 3rd floor with our 2 and 5 year old kids. They were occupied for over 5 hours and although they spent the whole time playing, the kids learned about coal mining, building a dam, steel production, and cooking. Some of the exhibits need some maintenance to function properly but it was still a great day. This museum would probably entertain kids up to age 9 or so.
Good place to take kids on the weekend
It was an informative and enjoyable hands on time for both a 1st grader and 7th grader. Adults enjoyed its informative displays as well. Great place.
Loved the Steel movie, some of the displays are looking a little shabby but a very interesting story of Cambria City.
Very nice and helpful staff. There is much to learn from early Johnstown history to immigration to the boom of steel making. There are also rooms available for rent for many different events. Well worth going to.
We went for Halloween and it was busy. They had to get more candy.
Its educational and fun for kids.
Great time very informative
Love this place! Its absolutely worth every penny my family and I spent
So fun! Grandkids loved the childrens floor. Easy to get to.
Great place to learn!
The exhibit was great!
Awesome place. Too bad not alot of people know about what it is exactly. Went for a birthday party and my daughter had a blast in the childrens section. Lots of things to learn about Johnstown heritage
HDC occupies an old factory building, and has two main displays. One is a film about the early iron and steel industry, which were, along with the related mining and railroads, key to Johnstowns history. Not just the floods, but the rich history of immigration and the ethnic churches and neighborhoods. And the second exhibit is about just that -- the experience of immigrants. There are other features, including a childrens museum, and an exhibit dedicated to the various wares that Johnstown manufacturing produced in days gone past -- from glassware to hot water radiators so many of us used. There is also, during growing season, of a display of plants that are native to this area, with a wonderful overview of the Cambria City neighborhood, which was the home of so many ethnic groups. BTW, do NOT use the mailing address on your GPS. Use 699 Broad St., Johnstown. THAT will get you to the entrance of the HDC parking lot.
Immigration tour very poor. Media did not work. Steel tour awesome.
Offers an in depth view of the immigrant experience in the Johnstown, PA area, a childrens activity area (best for younger kids, say pre-school to maybe 2nd grade), and a history of the citys iron and steel works which is actually pretty interesting. If you have an hour or two go ahead and make the stop.
Ok was not a repeat place kids zone on third floor food for little kids
Fun place to learn
Very interesting.
