So much fun. Reserve online it is the best option. Gets you guaranteed parking for this popular hike. 1 car can have 6-8 people and is only $15 a car. Don’t be tricked there are 2 different spots on the trail that look like the summit but are not keep going and you will see how/where the summit is. Very steep and rocky most of the way up. Then turned into semi rock climbing near the top. One of my favorite hikes this year. Also don’t forget a jacket, the summit is very windy!

Definitely rated hard for a reason, lots of rock climbing. Easy to follow the trail dots but very steep at parts. Views were incredible even though we only made it as high as the intersection with White across trail because we lost day light— plan for a long hike! Took us over two hours to get to that point (we weren’t in a rush). Definitely seemed like there were bears lurking in the bushes near us (smells and scratch marks on the rocks). Wish we could’ve stayed longer for the view, it was incredible !

Amazing climb. I got to the top on white dot trail in one hour and 17 minutes with frequent brakes and video/picture stops. It took a total of 3 hours round trip. It’s a lot harder coming down, i fell and slipped at least 10 times because of the major rock formations, very wet and slimey. You’re dog wouldn’t be able to reach the top so why leave a negative review about your dog not being allowed? There’s a few nice spots on way up to take pics, couple small water fall type run offs.

Started off as a night trek at 3am, it was just the 5 of us and not a soul in the state park. One of the best treks I had in New Hampshire apart from climbing Mount Washington..! (Apparently have been to only two mounts in Hampshire..). The view is amazing. We took the White Cross Trail. The level of the trek is medium in difficulty but it was worth going. They say there are bears in the mountains, make sure you have a noise making device or you keep talking while hiking..! If hiking alone, prefer keeping a safety weapon in case of an attack..! Rest assured the mountain is safe.

I enjoy the white dot trail. Its a real butt kicker. Beautiful views on the way up, at the top, and on the way down. On clear days you can see Boston 80 miles away, Vermont, and the White mountains. Falcon Springs at the beginning of the White Dot and White Cross trail head has cold amazing water to drink and cool off with. The best 3100 foot peak with a nice breeze and 360° views.

I’m more of a casual hiker. I came here as an adult volunteer on a youth group trip. After not hiking for months, this ended up being sort of a challenge...in a good way. We took the white dot trail, which seems like it’s the most mild/popular route to the top. It really wasn’t too bad, but there were some sections that were testing our groups sore legs and lack of cardio. We went during the summer, it was kind of hot, but the temperature at the top was several degrees cooler than the bottom, which was refreshing. Some members of our group ran out of water, which could have been a problem, but luckily we had enough to share. I believe the recommended amount is 2 liters per person (not one 32oz Nalgene bottle), so keep that in mind. There are several great vistas on the way up. The view from the top is beautiful, and makes the hike totally rewarding when you get there. Be careful coming back down...it seems that tired hikers are more susceptible to gravity-assisted injuries. There’s a nice little camp store at the base, and also a little museum/info center. Youth camping is available at park, and family camping is nearby as well. It was a great day trip, and everyone had a good time.

Great mountain to climb just dont go on a weekend during the fall foliage season or you will be climbing with a ton of other people.Mount Monadnock summit is at 3,165-ft. and is surrounded by thousands of acres of protected highlands and is open year-round.This is a bald-top, rocky mountain overlooking dense forests and lakes. The most popular route up starts at the Monadnock State Park Headquarters in Jaffrey. Entrance to the park costs $5. At the Park Headquarters there are flush toilets, a ranger station and a park store nearby. Pack a jacket even if it is hot in the parking lot as the summit can be windy and cold.

We took the white dot trail to the top and back. Another time we took the white dot up and the white cross trail down. Sometimes parts of the trails are inundated with puddles and streams, despite many drainage arrangements. But this year was not bad at all.If youre in good shape, the trip from the main lot/visitor center to the top takes about takes about 2 hours each direction. It took us about 3 each way. There are plenty of steep rock surfaces, but nothing my daughter couldnt climb at 9 years old. New climbers should be aware though:The trip up uses a lot of energy, but the trip down can be tougher since balancing, slowing yourself and descending from uneven rock to rock can be tricky and rough on the lower legs. One senior in our group found gauging the angles of the rocks more difficult going down. That said, we really enjoyed certain sections of the trail. The view at the top is incredible and uplifting. And even at middle levels there are some great vistas. There are some beautiful plants and some small animals if you keep an eye out for them. Amazingly we found some tadpoles in one of the small pools right at the top (see attached image).Be aware though: when driving to the trailhead, unless you set up your map search carefully, a lot of GPS systems will direct you to a secondary trail head where there are no restrooms. The drive from there to the main parking and visitor center is only a couple miles though. There are porta-potties near one of the visitor center parking lots, but better quality restrooms not far away near the visitor center itself. There is a place to drink water or fill bottles near the bathrooms, but the water tastes rusty and yucky and I advise you bring outside water to drink. There are no restroom or similar facilities along the trail itself, so steel yourself for the next 4+ hours without access. At the time we went, prices to use the park were $5 for adults and $2 for kids.

Review №73

First mountain climbed! Whoo! I checked the reviews before setting out with my gym group on a crisp autumn day for the hike, and boy were there wide spectrum assessment for the difficulty level...! Some people said it was easy little hike and others saying it was very challenging. I would recommend just checking either Wikipedia or the park website itself for more objective assessments, which ranks this as moderate. Its definitely not the most challenging, but I would hesitate to recommend this to beginners due to the steep, rocky and slippery features of the most popular paths especially near the actual summit. Hiking boots are helpful and dont make the same mistake as me for drinking all your water on the ascent. Some generous fellow hikers gave us an unopened water bottle though, which was very much appreciated.Mt. Monadnock is definitely one of the most popular places to hike, and they can easily get away with charging $5/person with the hundreds of thousands of people that probably visit each year. On the perfect autumn day (10/15/16), there must have been at least a few hundred people climbing as we were constantly sandwiched in between groups who were either trying to circumvent us or right on our tails. Granted we did take the most direct/popular paths of White Dot up and White Cross down. The scenery during the fall is breathtaking with the foliage and the multiple false peaks that tease you. Were almost there...?!So many gorgeous photo opportunities if you can find an area not densely packed with other bodies especially at the summit. When we reached the top around 11:30am, there were people lining each crevice of the mountain and it was difficult to get a photo that captured all of the natural beauty. As you can imagine with all these people traversing the trail the large rocks are smoothed down and slippery. I can imagine hiking Monadnock while its raining would be quite treacherous. In several areas there are steep inclines and most people are also crawling on their hands or propelling themselves upwards from one boulder to the next. You could take a longer way and go around for some of these areas. Strangely enough there were several patches of wet/muddy and spots leftover probably from previous rain especially on the way down in the shaded areas.I personally think that the descent is trickier than the ascent especially since we took a different path down. We traded the larger smoother rocks/boulders for those pesky ENDLESS small uneven rocks. I was so sick of them not even halfway down, if I were to come here again I would look into using a different path since the impact on your knees is quite jarring. So if youre like me using hiking poles on the way down can definitely alleviate some of the impact on your knees/ankles. I definitely felt that the next day and avoided stairs as much as I could. All in all it was a pleasant but challenging experience for me since prior to this we had only hiked easy and short 1-2 hour hikes. If we return well check out the other paths plan on bringing more water.
