So much information and so wonderfully displayed! And easy to get to with easy parking.
Eiteljorg is a must see when in Indy. The collection is diverse with an emphasis on Western art, but also interpretive areas with artifacts and artwork of North American Indian cultures and regions. They have excellent contemporary exhibits and a childrens exploration area. When possible, parking is validated in their garage. We also had a meal at the cafe. The butternut squash and beet salad was tasty and prices affordable. Loved the southwest influenced interior design.
What a wonderful facility. My wife and I visited last week and certainly enjoyed our time there. Staff is impeccably trained and friendly. Exhibits were thought-provoking and impressive. Displays were separated by type of art (play space for paintings, a space for baskets, Etc.) I personally found this to be well done. If you enjoy the culture of Native Americans or Western Art, it is not to be missed. Plan on spending two to three hours. Do not pass by the gift shop thinking it is probably full of standard gift shop trinkets. The content is impressive. We loved our visit, and have been talking about it with one another off and on since being there. Truth be told, it wasnt just a visit. It was an experience.
We have enjoyed the exhibits so much over the years.
It has an outstanding collection of Western art on permanent display. I especially enjoyed the unique quilts in a temporary display.
Jingle Rails made both my kids grin ear to ear.
The last gallery on the left, upstairs is the reason to come. Skip the white-washed American West exhibit in the main hall. It tells the revisionist history of Wild Bill and Zane Grey. But upstairs there are some good exhibits, especially the last one om the left, the Please Touch gallery of sculptures by the amazing Michael Naranjo, a blind Native and Vietnam veteran.
Was really cool! Went specifically for the Jingle Rails exhibit and love it, worth $15 alone. We also saw the rest of the museum too, less interactive than I thought it be. Its mostly art museum though there are two exhibits on the second floor that are interactive one of them goes through the history and culture of different Native American communities the other is for art that you are allowed to touch(my favorite exhibit).Overall its good for gathering information but I wouldnt suggest you bring your kids, but they might get bored.
Beautiful museum building situated on the Downtown Canal. Great collection of artifacts, organized by geographical region. Also has an interesting Please Touch sculpture gallery, and a very nice Special Exhibit on Quilts from the West. From the BeforeTimes, there are hands-on family activities (puzzles, make a teepee, etc) but the activity materials have been removed due to Coronavirus.
This is an excellent art museum. Beautiful facility and art works. I spent 3-4 hours and enjoyed my visit completely! Indiana should be very proud!
Wonderful museum. Gorgeous works of art, and pieces both from actual Native Americans and from artists commemorating the old American West. Everything was presented in an incredibly respectful manner, and it was clear the museum employs and works with actual Native Americans to ensure pieces are presented in a respectful and accurate manner, rather than just as an old roadside oddity as has often been done in our nations history. Overall this was a delightful and educational way to spend the afternoon.
A wonderful asset to Indianapolis and its visitors -- the Eiteljorg Museum showcases life from the perspective of the Native Americans and settlers through paintings, including Georgia OKeeffe, plus artifacts, authentic Native American clothing and everyday items from the eras history. Well worth a visit.
Love the Eiteljorg during Christmas time for Jingle Rails! I have 2 yr old who loves the trains! All the volunteers who work it are super friendly and knowledgeable about the trains!
Beautiful museum with a great collection of contemporary art and historical pieces. The native heritage of the Midwest is so important, yet not taught enough.
We had a great time at this museum. My daughters enjoyed the train display and the train table that they had for small children to play with my husband also enjoyed his time looking at the bronze statues and paintings. I enjoyed their souvenir shop, the prices were reasonable and had a 25% discount on top of it. We were only able to be there for 45 minutes as it closed a bit earlier than what we anticipated. Overall we had a great time.
I used to live in Colorado, but I must say this is one of the best collections of Southwestern and Native American art in the country, if not the best.
The Eiteljorg is a great museum experience. I particularly liked how the museum was set up in different sections, focusing on both history and aesthetic: the main level is art work that features Native Americans and the American West in the artwork itself, whether that artwork be from Native Americans or Americans of European decent. The second level transitions from being an art museum to a history museum, focused largely on the Native American tribes of Indiana and the region in general, but then transitions back to more of a focus on art, but art from the perspective of the Native American nations that were creating it. Finally, in the basement is a kids museum, with interactive exhibits and a themed play area. There is also a rotating gallery on the main level - on our visit it featured contemporary Native American artwork. The cafe was surprisingly good, offering up familiar choices with a Southwestern and Mexican influence.
A great museum to visit to see art that captures the life, culture and history of Native Americans.
Lovely, relaxing way to spend an hour appreciating the talents of others.
Loved this place. Learned some things as well. CULTURE
One of the best museums in the US for American Indian and West American art. Quite an extensive collection of art on display and they have different special exhibits throughout the year. Jingle Rails during the Christmas season is a favorite. Each year they seem to add something new to the display. This year it was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Amazing how it is all made of nature materials. Highly recommend.
We really enjoyed this museum. The Native American and Western art was vibrant and beautiful. The bronze sculptures were my favorite (inside and outside!). The kids area in the basement is really fun, and I think for all ages — dont miss it. The museum is cool, spacious, clean and staffed by friendly people. We enjoyed walking through the garden down to the river walk. Great location.
Jingle Rails is the reason we came but we had a wonderful experience exploring the rest of the museum. They had puzzles and other fun things for the little ones, well and us grown people too. Definitely a Great way to spend a few hours. We got a year pass so we could enjoy other exhibits throughout the year. Jingle Rails was Amazing.
The Jingle Rails are absolutely amazing!! Definitely worth seeing!
Loved Exhibits, Jingle Rails, and MLK Day Activities. There was a Holiday Shop with clearance items on the other side of the Coat Room area
Amazing exhibit of Native American and wild west paintings and sculptures. Gift shop has really nice items for sale in all price ranges. Cafe is a good place to take a break. Would definitely go again if I return to Indianapolis!
This museum is a wonderful mix of art, history, and artifacts. I felt that I learned a lot about Native American cultures by walking through the museum. There are many hands on activities throughout the museum like jigsaw puzzles of the art, learning to swaddle a baby with a cradle board, and creating a totem pole that reflects your family history. My husband and I dont have kids yet, but I can see this museum being a fun place for kids to visit and learn with the canal level including many kid-size interactive exhibits. Reasonably priced entrance fee with special rates - one being $2 off if you show a downtown Indianapolis hotel key card.
We went for the train exhibit and childrens interactive area. Had a great time and staff was very friendly. Parking was easy underneath the museum. Need to go back to see the rest.
Unique museum of Native American and Western artwork, conveniently situated on western side of downtown Indy, next to Cultural Trail and Canal Walk.
Very clean and peaceful environment! I love everything about this spot. They are always hosting lots of cool and informational events. Great place to bring your significant other and spend time.
We loved the train exhibit - our toddler was in paradise! Great parking, friendly staff.
Great place to learn about the Native Americans and their culture and artistry. Also, art depicting the Old West in sculpture and paintings. My favorite artist is Frederic Remington and I was able to see his bronze work and paintings, a truly talented American artist. The upstairs exhibit focused on tribes of Indiana as well as the rest of the nations. The staff was very friendly, and able to answer any questions I had. The gift shop had a vast assortment of things to choose from, ranging from $-$$$. The restroom was very clean.I would recommend this museum to anyone. A++
Indianapolis is so lucky to have such a niche museum such as The Eiteljorg. First of all, the architecture is simplistic and perfect. The texture of the building and the woodwork makes for a creative backdrop for images. Weve photographed many events here over the years, and have been honored to create so many beautiful memories for our clients.
Wonderful grounds to explore, not just the inside of the museum. It backs right up to the Canal walk. So when you are finished exploring the museum, you can check out the Canal.
The museum is relatively expensive, but its worth the price. I would suggest parking elsewhere in the city if you are fine with walking. The grounds are well kept, so you can have a enjoyable walk there as well. There are plenty of statues and a beautiful fountain! Its a great place to go if your looking for a day outing with family or friends.
This is a lovely venue to host your wedding celebration at. Grace is amazing to work with and I also Highly recommend Lights Out Entertainment DJ service for your Host/DJ/Master of Ceremony needs!Spacious areas to host your event with out door options available. There is also a terrace for guests to retreat and smoke a cigar even while enjoying a unique view of downtown!
I love this museum. So many artifacts and history! There was even a guided tour that engaged the children and captured their attention. There is a hands on history center downstairs where children are free to run around touch and experience everything! If you get hungry, dont worry...they have a restaurant on site that serves up delicious provisions!
I learned a lot about the Native American culture of the Miami, Potawatomi and the Delware. Being from New Mexico, a place that embraces the native culture more than most other states, it was good to see an effort put in to remember the people that where here first.
Jingle rails was absolutely amazing! Stunning work. Lots of good Western Art and memorabilia right now as well.
They fit a lot of unique artifacts into one little museum and it is breathtaking. The art pieces they have are quite impressive. Truthfully one of my favorite small museums to visit.
Interesting place, the art itself is great, think the cover charge may be too high, although they do validate parking.
Very informative, inclusive, and beautiful. The Grand Canyon triptych is worth the visit. Good cafe, and pleasant garden for a sunny day walk.
Great museum, a little surprising that the majority of the floor space was dominated by the western plains art. Considering the large number of local tribes, I expected a bit better representation. The Anthony Wayne flag was worth coming for.
It has some very interesting exhibits, and some of the best paintings Ive seen in awhile. Well worth the fee ( $15.00 per person, for those of you who want to know ), and the time spent. Highly recommend if you have the time, lots of items to look over.
I started with an exhibit unpacking the definition of modern day Native American Art, and after found a new favorite artist here and learned a ton about him through a lively and engaging exhibit! Harry Fonseca, whose coyote are pictured. Highly recommend a stop! art of many genres.
The jingle rails exhibit was top notch. I would recommend it to anybody who loves trains, nature and fun. We had been to so many of the places that the scenery showed.
This was a great place with amazing exhibits. They also have a great kids section. We saw the Jingle Rails exhibit and it was totally worth it.
A lot of painting based on cowboy and Indian. The painting start from 1900 until today. Some of the artist coming from Santa Fe and Taos. The 2nd floor is regular exhibition.
Very cool! Jingle rails was the main purpose of our visit. We enjoyed the childrens area downstairs & everyone loved the experience & learning throughout the museum.
The Jingle Rails was fantastic! And so was the Wild West movies, actors, movie posters and costumes that the Western actors wore!!
The train display around Christmas was fantastic! I also enjoyed the art. There are some interactive elements for children to enjoy too.
Great music. Nice display of American art
We attended the 2019 Native American Festival and Market. It was an amazing visit. The staff did a great job bringing in a wide variety of artists from around the country. We enjoyed meeting them, taking in the art and buying some gifts to take back home. After seeing the artists we enjoyed the museum itself and had a really nice experience. Being from Oklahoma, we were excited to see our home state so well represented in several of the galleries. Eiteljorg is gem in the city and a great way to see something and learn something in an afternoon.
Always interesting. Our grandkids love it.
Recent visit for company function. The art exhibits were beautifully placed in quiet relective areas. Lots of intricate wood work and mid western, native art to view. Restaurant and cafetera available. It is attached to the Indiana State Museum.
It is a nice museum. Not as many kid friendly displays, but some. Care was expensive and served good food. There was a live band outside when we visited, which was an added bonus.
I was definitely amazed at the care put into the place. The art is breathtaking, and the exhibits are put together with care. I have been multiple times and will definitely be back.
Great museum of the Americans. Lots to learn and very interesting exhibits. Building its self could use some upgrades.
Interesting mesuem, if you enjoy history and native American art work then you will enjoy this mesuem. Lots to see.
We were able to go through this museum in under an hour. For us, nothing really jumped out too much. There are some hands on experiences, but not as many as at the state museum. It was a nice short experience but not enough to get us to ever return.
Easy in easy out. Wide walk ways, excellent examples of native american culture. The train exhibits are well done, the people in charge should be proud of this place.
A wonderful native american art and culture museum. The highlight for our family is always the jingle rails exhibit. However the indian market festival in the summer is fantastic as well. Parking will be validated if you park in their garage & you present garage ticket at front desk. There is a cafe. You can also walk the canal after your museum visit. Admission is affordable. children 5 and under are free. There is a great play area on the bottom level for children
It was an amazing experience! My people of this land are beautiful! Please attend, learn, learn about yourself, and enjoy life. I most definitely am. I feel more connected to my land, people and myself. Thank you!️
By far the best museum in Indianapolis. Every visit is different and I have never been disappointed. It also has one of the best gift shops Ive ever been in.
Wonderful place for adults and children.
We enjoyed this museum. Very much worth a visit. Lots of great art on display and plenty of information to explain the background of the artists. Western themes on the 1st level and Native themes on the 2nd level. We bumped into one of the new artists on display and had a nice time chatting.
We took our boys here for a nice family day. The exhibits are quite extensive and very well kept. The staff was very friendly, there is a fun area for kids as well. Very informative and reasonably priced as well. We will definitely be back.
Visited for the Jingle Rails. Our kids seemed the enjoy the exhibit. Its grown a little since the last time we were there which was also nice to see.
Great place to see western art and learn about American Indian culture.
Located near to Indiana State museum, and can enjoy canal walk also,it tells us the story of red Indians, how they evolved here, lifestyle and all.there is also some painting shows on weekends (we can also buy that time).they provide childrens play area also
The western art display was so interesting! The trains were mesmerizing. The kids had fun finding the check points from the cards they gave out. I thought maybe they might get bored, but they had enough stuff to occupy the kids too.
Culture at its finest.
This is one of my favorite museums. The art is wonderful and there are a lot of interactive pieces and family friendly areas that even kids can enjoy. Parking is great and staff is really friendly.
Beautiful artifacts and art. Paintings, photographs, and sculptures depicting native indigenous peoples.
Mostly native American art and Western film memorabilia, rather small but makes for a trip that many will appreciate
Well definitely be back
A great museum to check out for a low key afternoon, especially if your interested is Native American and early western history. Be sure to check in all your contraband at the front desk. Water bottles, umbrellas, etc are all not permitted in the museum.
Beautiful and full of history of all Americans.
The presentations were fun and educational and there were lots of artists with beautiful things for sale. The signage clearly lays out the context, the political subtext, and the cultural messages of the various objects in addition to the usual details about the artist. We highly recommend a visit.
Great quilt exhibit!
Love the artwork, friendliness, and the gift shop.
Visited for El Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Museum itself was nice. Nice little cafe
Native American & Western Art Museum. Really great place to visit in Indianapolis.
Enjoyed an evening in here with my family after a game at victory field. Nice and cool and quiet my daughter (age 8) loved looking at all of the native American jewelry and baskets. Also enjoyed a free concert on the patio in the cafe. Cant wait to go back for a full day!
Cool place to burn some time and learn something for once.
I was pleasantly surprised at their American West art collection. They have a wide variety of artist and art works and a lot of Remingtons. We spend about an hour here browsing and enjoying the exhibits.
Take a guided tour. The guides are so informative and energetic. Great for student groups
Perfect 2-hour museum experience. Neat mix of wild west and native art. Exceptionally friendly staff were unafraid to offer info and engage with visitors. $13 seemed steep, but the experience was great and no regrets.
A gem of a cultural treasure hidden in plain sight. Collections are deep and wide encompassing art and anthropology. Very fitting building architecture and a rich store with great finds for all budgets. We highly recommend a visit of at least 3 hours immersed in cultural understanding.
Loved the displays and gift store! Lots of information I didnt know.. hands on exhibits were fun!
Went to a reception there. Very unique venue, good food and drinks. Awesome time there.
Beautiful place. Great educational experience. Staff was super friendly
Went for Jingle Rails and explored some fantastic art. Family had a wonderful time.
I enjoy seeing my story being told as i am indigenous to the land.
Very interesting sleek and modern museum. Covers an aspect of American History we arent really talk too much about in school. Well worth visiting for the items that they have on display. Be sure to check the website for special events.
