I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at the Indiana State Museum on Leap Day 2020. I had been looking forward to photographing the wedding since my couple booked, with such a unique location choice for their reception.Indiana State Museum certainly did not disappoint. They did an incredible job with ensuring everything was well taken care of for my clients, including security to ensure nothing went awry during their reception. We were able to go behind the museum along the canal during sunset and capture some gorgeous portraits just the two of them. This was the perfect breather for my couple between traveling from the ceremony and starting their reception. The food was divine, and the night was magical. If you are a couple looking for a venue in Indianapolis for your wedding reception, I cant recommend Indiana State Museum highly enough!
Very happy visit. Very clean. Sanitation stations well placed. Staff was super friendly. Exhibits were well taken care of. Cant say one thing or the other was preferred because the family had an overall great experience. Even got a parking voucher. Look forward to returning again in the near future. Great experience for all ages alike. Was very peaceful and not rushed at all even on a weekend day. Keep up the great work and the support to local artists was awesome. Will be visiting again soon. Loved the addictions exhibit.
The museum is very interesting as it has something for everyone. At this moment they are getting ready for Santa to visit ! The historic childrens trai ride will be going as well, and not to mention the tea room with their wonderful food offerings and the breakfasts with Santa. There will also be a Daniel Tiger exhibit and breakfast. For even more fun enjoy a walk down the canal. Theres underground parking that leads directly to the museum, a great gift shop filled with both Indiana themed merchandise, to cute gifts and stocking stuffers. And dont forget to get your picture taken with Santa or the giant Indiana obelisk.
I love it is so much fun I love the history and It is good for you and your family AND kids and your teenagers
The Indiana State Museum is a family favorite. There is plenty to see for every age and interest.I feel like the staff is doing a phenomenal job of keeping the museum as safe and and as disinfected as possible during Covid (while also being very welcoming and helpful to visitors). We appreciate that.
We took our 3 yr old Granddaughter to see Daniel Tiger exhibit. Really cute. She enjoyed it alot. Went through some of the other exhibits while we were there. Enjoyed our Saturday afternoon.
The museum is full of hands-on and interactive exhibits, and the lady that we talked to in the microscopes lab on the first floor was very nice and willing to tell us all about the exhibits. We ate at the farmers market cafe, and it was great as well. The prices for the grilled cheese of the day included hand cut chips and a free cup of water. Overall had a good time and we would come visit again.
Very clean, very educational. Also loved the IMAX theater.
That was the first time my wife and I visited the museum and we had a great time and want to take our kids so they can enjoy our history of Indiana
Excellent place to hold a wedding ceremony! They were SO HELPFUL! They really work hard to make sure everything is in place and flowing smoothly. I cant thank them enough for being so flexible during the pandemic. They made sure everything was safe, clean and efficient.
The cafe here at the Museum was a wonderful surprise. We had a delightful lunch. Definitely will plan to go hungry on my future visits here. We did soup and grilled cheese combos (This and That they called it). My tomato basil soup was awesome, but my daughter’s Chicken Velvet was the best chicken soup I’ve ever tasted. The grilled cheese had turkey and roasted red pepper on sourdough. Wonderful lunch.
Had a very poor experience with the Daniel Tiger exhibit and staff. Attempted to speak with the front ticket counter and was basically shrugged away. We were having a great visit until then, which kind of ruined the day for us. Not sure who else to reach out to about the issue as it didn’t seem of importance to any staff present this afternoon.
Protective measures were placed in order to ensure everyone had distance between each other. I felt safe and the projection looked fantastic.
Interesting museum. Well kept.
Doing a wonderful job of laying out place during the covid times. The staff is very friendly and it truly was amazing place. Put the phones down and learn a little about Indiana and the world around us.
Clean. Best museum cafe food! Loved the kid friendly exhibit & look forward to more! Fun location on the canal.
Gets better every year. The ATSC and NARM reciprocal membership benefits pay dividends from the number of other museums weve been able to visit.
My wife and I stopped by here when we were visiting Indy for the weekend and staying at a nearby hotel. I can only speak for the IMAX theatre and the staff there. Everything other than the theatre seemed closed since it was 7 pm and during COVID season. The theatre was nice and a step above the standard IMAX at a typical theatre like Regal. The staff at the ticketing and concessions stand were very friendly and helpful.
They have fone a great job capturing our history!
Loved the museum. Went here for the Gem and Mineral Show and explored the museum. Lots of crafts that day for kiddos, but I made a pet rock! None the less, I enjoyed the museum while I was there and the helpful friendly staff.
Had a great time with the family here the other day. Fun and educational with a few hands on bits. I like that they included small patches of fur from the different animals and many of the fossils out where you were allowed to touch them. Helpful staff gave us plenty of information about the exhibits as we went and they gave us a little voucher so that parking was only $5. Bonus!
Always a delight to go to the Indiana State Museum. My family loves to visit the new parts of the museum and the IMAX.
First time being there. It was great, awesome experience. And admission was free with a canned food item on MLK DAY.
Celebration Crossing offered a great opportunity for me and my toddler to explore this museum. The exhibits are interactive and appropriate for kids and adults of many ages. It is definitely worth the membership investment. This museum is also a partner with a local puppet show business.
I really enjoyed it! Nice exhibits and sanitizing stations all around!
Please. For the love of God. STOP THE 15 MINUTE TRAIN WHISTLE.Military Park is a beautiful park, but there’s never people there. I think it’s because there is a terrible out-of-pitch train whistle every 15 minutes. How about making it every 1 hour?Do it for the people.Thank you.
This is always a unique experience. We enjoy the different exhibits both permanent and traveling. Our kids enjoyed the Lego exhibit and the cardboard engineering exhibit. The museum is currently prepping for the arrival of Santa and Mrs Clause!
If you plan on taking more than one person, buying the membership is worth it! Got to review the opioid exhibit. That was truly amazing, they’ve made the exhibit very nice. Also knowing that it can be emotional for people they’ve made it very big in there. There is lots of room to sit down and lots of different ways to cope. There is music, writing etc. great ideas! You can tell this idea was thought through.
Good place to spend about 3 hours in downtown Indy. I think children can enjoy more than the adults and ticket feels but overpriced as a whole. Nature is well displayed and attractive.
Very clean and well kept museum, staff and many locations to provide interactive exhibitions. There was a rock show going on while I was there. The ticket price was a little steep to get in the museum. Though there are geology, local habitat, fossil, and a large history exhibit in the museum.
Great place to spend an afternoon. Very clean. Very safe.
Great for all ages. Those exhibits are amazing and insane.
Great place for children and adults. We have been several times and it never disappoints. Always friendly and helpful staff, very clean and all the displays are in great shape and well kept. Not wore out like other museums. I highly recommend going and taking the kids. If you do the Imax movie, you get free parking in the garage! So totally worth it!
Beautiful museum would definitely reccomend if your in the area. We spent hours there just walking through all the exhibits
A lot of things to look and even touch here. Great for all ages. I especially loved the moon/planet viewer.
Something for everyone. Family friendly.
In this time of COVID, the museum sees few visitors. That made my visit a real pleasure.
I loved it! Its the best museum to learn about Us history, and art, the structure is well designed, armonic, toilets clean, many parking spots, etc
MY FAVORITE MUSEUM IN INDY! Multiple levels, interactive workshops, great cafeteria/restaurant for the public, range of prices at the gift store, affordable parking, connected to IMAX Theatre, off of the canal, easy walk to Eiteljorg Museum/NCAA Hall of Champions/White River Parkway!!!
I didnt like that some of the fossils, exhibits look fake. I know theyre probably not. Too many rocks, fossils not enough about the Native Americans who used to inhabit the land.
Wide variety of exhibits of history and culture of Indiana.
Interesting museum:- Covers a wide periode of time,- from the big bang until presence.- Indiana state centered/oriented- good-detailed information about the Indian natives and how they lived together before the French came and how their life changed to the worse due to the growing influence of the european settlers. and last but not least- dont forget to watch the the big pendulum in the Indiana State Museum until one Domino Stone falls
I found the 1st floor to be lame but the 2nd floor was full of Indianas culture and history, the people from here and things that happened. It was much more fascinating.
Went on a school field trip. Fun for a half day trip. Some neat exhibits. Not really a full day worth of things to do though.
Wonderful place for ALL ages! Could have spent the entire day here, even with a 1 year old walker.
Kids were entertained, was a good day
It was such a fun experience on fall break. The maze exhibit probably was the best part. My kiddos laughed and had a great time trying to figure everything out.
I was a little worried about taking my kids here because they are use to going to the Children’s Museum which is very hands on. But this place was great and had a lot of interactive experience for the kids. My son’s are five and seven and they both loved it. Do remember to keep your tickets recipe for parking because the cost for parking is my only complaint.
It was pretty cool. Lego sculptures were awesome.
Very interesting permanent exhibits with regular special exhibits. Parking is easy and rarely very crowded. Its nice to be able to walk out into the canal in nice weather. Museum restaurant its pricey but the food is very good.
This is a great place to learn about Indianas history. It caters to kids with hands on exhibits. Great for school groups and events. Its right on the canal which offers lots of activities. They offer fantastic traveling exhibits and have an IMax theater with new releases available. Great place to go.
Weve photographed countless events for and at the Indiana State Museum. We still find it amazing our state has a museum that is this SENSATIONAL. The architecture of this museum is amazing...modern yet intermixed with some historical facades that were lucky have been preserved. It is in the heart of the museum campus along the canal which make it a perfect location for images. And...who wouldnt want to dine around an original Robert Indiana Sculpture!? Wow.
Wonderful museum, highlighted by unique architecture, beautifully situated along Canal Walk.
Very educational good experience great exercise
So much to see! Great place to take your kids!!
Great exhibits and they did a great job keeping everything clean.
Extremely helpful staff and wonderful exhibits
The ISM cafeteria is one of the hidden treasures tucked away downtown. If you are walking along the canal, pop into the state museum and go to the second floor. You will find very clean restrooms and a great place to get a bite to eat and something to drink while you warm up or cool off and the view is fantastic! You dont need to pay admission to the museum to visit the cafe.
Big A for the Indiana State Museum! Lots of interesting things to look at, a few to play with. Less interactive than the Childrens Museum but some very cool lego, artistic and historical stuff.
This is a great place to take the family to learn about the states history. There is always a new exhibit about every 3 months. There is three levels to the building and a nice cafe so you can stop and take a break. Overall, great place!
We had a great trip with our school. Great for adults and children!
We became members almost a year ago and LOVE it. I wasnt sure if my kiddos would enjoy the museum (6&3) but they beg to go. There are so many amazing activities during the year. The IMAX is great. The canal and park outside are wonderful. Highly recommend.
My daughter loves this museum! She was finally old enough to play in the exhibits. Im really impressed with all the activities for young children.
The museum is great but the clock outside the canal is very Loud and out of tune and pitchy. The fact it goes of every 15 minutes leaves no peace and quiet in the surrounding area and parks. Have it go off noon and 5 or something but NOT every 15 minutes.
Interesting exhibits depicting Indianas history.
It was ok, things has changed since I was a kid, I havent been there in like, 20 years, and I like the old museum, the new museum seems kind of meh. And they soda pops are expensive, I bought 3 sodas and a came up to 11 dollars like really
Great place for our 10 year old brother. We absolutely loved cardboard engineering. We scoped out the rest of the museum and didnt have time to stay, but ended up buying a membership since the 10 year old loved it so much. Lots to see and learn!
Plan a day and have a great time reliving the past in a wonderful setting.
There is so much to learn about this state, and walking through this museum is like walking through a text book, both because of the depth of information it provides, and the amount of reading....Some of you may not like to read...I do, but there was not enough time for all. If you know nothing, little, or just want to know more, I totally recommend you go visit. There are so many showcases here ranging from Abraham Lincoln, to Janet Jackson, to stone quarries, to how canal levies work. There was also a poison exhibit when I went, which was super interesting as it had information on all sorts of poisons and how they affect different organisms.Recommend, but beware...you will be there for a while.
Very clean, but the seats could be more comfortable
Great museum of Indiana history, lots to see including resolving exhibits.
This is a very accessable and hands on museum! There is plenty to explore here and you can probably spend 2 hours there. They have some neat temporary exhibits and the staff is very nice. Make sure to get your parking ticket validated while at the ticket desk so you dont have to pay extra!
Very impressed. I learned a lot and saw a TON of cool stuff.
I went with a bus full of 6th grade scholars and the experience was well received. The exhibits were top knotched and full of Indiana history.
I wouldve given the Ayres Tea Room 5 stars, but the ISM needed to have a sign by the other cafe, and have it point to the Tea Room. Loved their famous Chicken Velvet Soup and the tea snacks!
Very fun museum with interests and activities for all ages! Reasonably priced, and they give you a coupon that drops the parking price to $5, which is a great savings.
The museum is nice and well located on the canal. A short walk from other attractions. I would definitely go again.
Wonderful museum. Loved the exhibits, cafe & IMAX.
The Indiana State Museum is a neat place to learn about the history of the Hoosier State. We have a membership to take advantage of the holiday activities like the L.S. Ayres train and Santa house. The exhibits target older kids and adults, but they are very well done. The IMAX theatre is the largest in the state and shows great movies.I do wish the museum had more to do, it seems like there is a lot of wasted space, especially across the bridge to nowhere (NCAA area) that hasnt had an exhibit for years.
Fantastic museum with detailed exhibits
This was a surprising gem located in the heart of Indianapolis. there were varied exhibits that taught me so much that I didnt know about the history of Indiana, ranging from prehistoric times beyond World War II. The most fascinating sections for me were the Native American, womens suffrage, and varied history of African-Americans as well as William Henry Harrison. There are traveling exhibits that are a must-see as well.
Visited from Michigan and love all the interactive exhibits. The details you see from different angles and floors is wonderful. The flow is also nice when you see everything on one floor there is a staircase to the next. Highly recommend if you are looking for something to do.
Excellent IMAX and other amenities.
Awesome hidden gem. Very educational, but even my 3year old loved it. Be prepared for stairs as there is only one area with the elevators that I noticed(and it either wasnt working or took FOREVER...it didnt hinder our trip much though).
Breakfast with Santa. Great food, wonderful service, and fun new activities for the kiddos. I love that they have new activities each year. Breakfast with Santa is a hit every year with our family.
Very nice and fun. Went there for the Asian fest. Lots of venders and a good show
Clean, good variety of displays with written explanations. Spacious enough for several hundred children to be visiting at the same time. Clean restrooms!
Better for older kids or ones that enjoy history and adults.
Great museum, great IMAX theater.
Great visit everyone was friendly and respectful
Very good exhibition, easy to understanding and know about Indiana in history, geography and culture. A must-go place for visitors.
Love this place! It is our second year attending the Asian Festival which Korea is the featured country this year. A lot to learn first hand about some of their culture. I love their dresses! These lovely folks wrote our names in Korean. Thank you!
The exhibits are fun and many are interactive so the kiddos like to visit too. I learn a little something each time and it doesnt take all day to see a lot of cool stuff. Its fun to discuss the exhibits with my girls and see how their kinds work. Always a great experience and the cafe serves up some fantastic nosh for lunch or snacks!
Lovely exhibits, or whole family enjoyed it. Great IMAX theater with snacks. A fun stop if you are in Indianapolis.
I hadnt been to the State Museum since before it was moved. Wow! The fossil exhibits are amazingly done. I also enjoyed the canal and the toys of each decade. My kids got a kick out of me pointing and saying I had one of those.
Its a fun museum, but what you get for what you pay is not worth it.
