Wicked cool museum! The chronological layout of the museum was really informative and interesting. The volunteer staff were very kind and helpful—they provided great insight on the history of the war machines, including details that were not written on the descriptive plaques! The Collings Foundation also offers tank driving sessions and flight sessions (for a cost of course) which is really cool. Where else would you be able to operate these historical machines?I would definitely recommend this museum and will definitely come back again in the future!

This is one of the best war museums I have ever been to. They have a wonderful setup of fully restored tanks and a few other unique items. The setup and design is well done with videos and sets that really give you an awe inspiring moment. They have vehicles from all sides of various wars. 95% of the units are fully operational. Some are very unique and not found anywhere else in the US or world.

Wow! Went to the WWII Battle for the Airfield reenactment in Fall 2018. With 300 reenactors and a few dozen working heavy artillery pieces, it was absolutely incredible. The narration was a huge plus. What was the icing on the cake is the new war history museum, its mind boggling! Just one impressive piece was a genuine scud missile from Desert Storm. Anyone interested in war history or would like to see more tanks under one roof than imaginable, GO SEE THIS!

So sad to hear about this tremendous loss. A flight on 909 with my nephew as PIC was the reason I started on my 10 month journey to becoming a pilot years ago. FAA needs to continue to honor the need to keep these aircraft flying and not in museums. Best wishes to the Collings !

I grew up with these planes. The B-17 and B-24 would show up just about the time school was getting over for the summer. As a child growing up in the 90s, it was such a delight to hear the 4 Wright Cyclone engines of the B-17 and the Pratt and Whitney twin row engines of the B-24 heralding the start of summer in the Seattle area as they flew overhead. We would visit them on static display and I used my allowance to pay to walk through them! I became enamored and wanted so badly to fly in them both! I got my chance on June 24, 2017. I had started truck driving on June 15, 2015 and decided to celebrate 2 years of safe truck driving with a flight on the bombers! They were flying out of Boeing field right by the Museum of Flight in Seattle. I flew in the B-24 first and the B-17 that evening. I cannot say I like either one better because they are both unique and beautiful in their own way. One has things to enjoy that the other dosent. I have to say, though, that sticking my head out the top of the fuselage over the radio operators compartment in the B-17 was incredible!! That whole day was just amazing and one of the best days of my life! If I had to describe the flying characteristics of the planes, I would have to say that the B-24 is solid and the B-17 is stable. I have since gotten a better truck driving job and was planning to celebrate again by flying in these beautiful planes in June of 2020, as that would be just over a year with my new company. I heard the tragic news of the B-17 crash in Connecticut on October 2 and it ripped my heart out! When I flew in the B-17, both the pilot and co-pilot signed my copy of A Higher Call, which I took aboard the flight. I dont know if those were the same pilots flying when it crashed, but I looked at the signatures through watery eyes. I dont know what the future holds, but thank you to the Collings Foundation for such incredible memories and experiences and my deepest sympathies, condolences and best wishes go out to everyone involved and affected by this tragedy! Quite Sincerely, Robert Sandberg.

We experienced flight aboard a B 17 at Laconia airport. The experience was special because it was like one of the aircraft that my father in law served on .He was a waist gunner and flew on 25 missions. Like so many he didnt talk about his experience in the Army Aircorp. This flight was for my wife, to have a little idea of being aboard the B 17. She was able to be at the waist gunner station which was important to her. Her father was Master Sergeant Ernest Lussier. We flew on his birthdate. Great experience and memory !

Not worth a visit. Firstly, it’s open only for events - although that’s not evident from searching for the place. Also, there is no air strip for Collins to offer flights - like it does in other events the foundation hosts (e.g. we visited them in Seattle and took a package that allowed test flights). When we went the whole place was padlocked, but we peeped in to check out the museum and it wasn’t much

For the second year now my family has gone out to the Battle for the Airfield at the Collings Foundation. While last year the event was amazing (in spite of the rain), this year they totally upped their game. There was even more to do and see.The reenactment is fantastic. Both years we went were different, with interesting little stories that play out and different equipment that are used. Last year they has a German aircraft take off and scan the area, demonstrating what they could do. This year a patrol was ambushed. I will warn everyone, the battle is loud. While all the rounds they fire are completely safe, youre still sitting or standing right next to guns, cannons, and tanks when they go off. They suggest earplugs for the noise, though were more comfortable without them. Theres also a narrator in an elevated booth who tells the story as it plays out, directing your attention to the things you may have missed or keeping you up with the plot. Theres so much going on, like I can imagine is the case in war, that its easy to miss things. Before and after the reenactment there are two camps to explore, the German camp and the Allies. There are period pieces set up everywhere, from firearms and vehicles to troop rations and even a German communications tent this year. The reenactors are incredibly knowledgeable and were able to answer questions that everyone in the family had. They were happy to get caught up in deep conversations about the whole time period, which resulted in hours of getting sidetracked in the camps when wed really just planned to walk through more like a museum. We probably could have spent the entire day were the kids not getting tired from all the excitement. We didnt even get to the veterans round table because there was so muc to do!Then theres the museum, which was new this year. The wait was long and not all the exhibits were up and running, but what we saw was amazing. The piece with the most impact was climbing down into a trench for a theatrical experience. This was followed by an exhibit that looks promising with political clips of the day and it was supposed to talk about being drafted. This led into a large exhibit hall with tanks and vehicles from WWII to the current war on terror. There was even a room with tank turrets cut open so you could see how it works. One one of them you could even operate the mechanism to raise and lower the cannon. There werent a lot of staff on hand to answer questions, and it would have been more helpful to have placards in place with information, but the museum is still in the process of being finished, so those may come in time. There was also a hangar on the property that housed a number of other exhibits. There were planes on the ground floor, as well as older vehicles on the second. There is even a race car exhibit. My kids were incredibly interested to see the rotary phone and the typewriter. The stairs are a little intimidating to someone afraid of heights, so I wasnt able to get up to the third floor this year, and Im not aware of it being accessible, but I hear it was great. The rest of my family loved it, and my little one who was too afraid didnt feel he missed out too much.Every year around Fathers Day they apparently bring out old cars and to a mock arrest of Al Capone, which sounds like fun. We may have to go out for that this upcoming year.

Be sure to google the wwii reenactment featuring over 200 actors, tanks, jeeps and half-tracks firing blanks at each other for a spectacular 20 minute wwii remake (its usually in early october google: battle for the airfeild). The museum alone would be worth the trip, but paired w the show, awesome!

Some years back, my wife saved up to give me a ride on the Collings Foundation B-17, which had stopped off in Boca Raton, at what used to be one of the most significant training bases the Army Air Force maintained in the continental US during WWII. The Collings Foundation puts on what amounts to a traveling classroom presentation of what is definitely the most significant historical event in US history. There were veterans present, sharing their experiences and answering questions from the public. When I boarded the plane, I immediately was impressed by the solidity of the B-17s construction and high quality of the workmanship that went into the design, fabrication and construction of it. I noticed a gentleman in his 80s and struck up a conversation with him. It turned out that it was also his birthday, that he had trained at Boca Raton Air Base and that he knew my uncle, who commanded the training of the pilots who flew all of the then top-secret, radar-equipped, aircraft in the USAAF.The fellow was in his 80s and hopped around the aircraft, zipping up from the radio niche, through the bomb bay and into the cockpit area, where he had flown in Europe on his many missions. His grandson found it difficult to keep up with him and also found, I think, that if he was sent along to take care of gramps, that gramps was actually the guy that could take care of him!The flight, from take-off to landing, was superb. I have flown in many aircraft, from Piper Cubs to Jumbos and never experienced as smooth a take-off and landing. The acceleration and rate of climb was very, very impressive, as was the flight handling. If ever you are around one of these flying schoolrooms that the Collings Foundation puts on, visit one! Take your family with you, especially the youngest, who might only have seen such a plane in a movie and, given todays educational system, have been presented a very slanted and ambiguous history of WW II.I found it particularly interesting that the Collings Foundation takes their flying classroom show to small airfields in smaller cities. What many people really dont know is that these airfields were part of a vast network of US Army Air Force and Naval Aviation bases that served to train and support our fliers at that time. With regard to the noise, well folks, I think that there is something very reassuring about hearing a military power, piston engine equipped war bird that served to keep us a free nation and liberate dozens of oppressed nations from some of the evilest dictators in history.
