Just called for the first time and the guy was short and cut me off. This was my first time finding this restaurant and customer service goes a long way. I cant say what the food taste like because I was turned off with the service so I went somewhere elseI want to support our own and yes we are learning and Im not leaving this to bash Im hoping this will help so you dont lose any other potential business
As the only place Ive found that serves Aki and Salt Fish, this place is awesome. Their Aki and Salf Fish was delicious. The fried sweet plantains were wonderfully well cooked. My wife got their ox tail which was fall apart tender and so savory. Their cabbage side was deliciously sweet to go with the savory dish. We also got an order of the plantain chips and snacked on those during our movie. They were perfectly crisp and crunchy.
The wait time was too long. 50 minutes and no one else was there when I arrive. Just for 1 entree. The chicken was dry but the lo mein was good. The plantains were over cooked. Probably wont visit again.
Tried this place out last Friday. The bartender was cool and really talkative, I got the oxtail plate. The food was just ok but all in all I liked it and will go back again.
Professionally cooked meals, quite a fine cuisine, n dining experience...The best tasting meals in Houston, we need a few more Island Spice Restaurants branches in Houston... Excellent meals, and service..Maybe in Jersey Village, Spring, Cypress, etc..
No greeting, No seating, No anything while a group of employees sat at the bar doing nothing. Finally found a comfortable spot after a minute or two, literally 5 seconds after an unnamed man (no introduction) asked us to move, well more like told us to move. Unprofessional and unethical, we were excited to go after reading other reviews, disappointing experience. 1 star simply because we left after this.
The flavor coming out of this kitchen in unbelievable! Wonderful place for drinks and the best jerk chicken you’ll eat in Houston!
Ive been to this restaurant three times and each time the food was amazing! I had jerk chicken and the braised oxtails. Its consistently good. Im getting ready to order again!!!
Super friendly staff and excellent food. Best oxtails and goat around!!
This place is my first choice restaurant. Of all restaurants I know I love it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to visit this place. Whenever I I need a special lunch, this restaurant comes straightaway to my mind. fresh and food and a rich menu.professional team, and pleasant mood. And very important, the tariff is reasonable. I tell about this spot with pleasure.
Food is beyond awesome. Jerk chicken, plantains, rice & beans w/ coco bread. Best Caribbean food in the city
The customer service was horrible. The guy that runs the place is extremely rude. The food was horrible! Do not waste your hard earned dollars on this establishment.
Fresh food. Four plantain slices. Yummy
First visit...very good experience. I ordered the red snapper and it was so fresh and perfectly seasoned. Will definitely return!
Good food. I didn’t care for the cabbage because it reminded me of call slaw but everything else was good. He convinced me to try the Jamaica soda and it was also good. Definitely returning
Very clean and accessible place. They provide big meals and for inexpensive prices. We loved the food very much and the waiters were super personal and informative. Recommended.
Well what can I say? Me and my husband decided to check this place out on a Saturday and also a Friday night. This was the best Caribbean food and drinks in this area I have tried I was so happy! The rum punch is a must and the jerk chicken and wings were so good. I truly felt like I was at a little spot on the island!!! We will continue to go back to listen to music, food and most definitely the drinks:)
We arrived at this restaurant for a meeting. my friend recommended this place. Well, it was a winning. The staff members welcomed us with a smile and we had a fantastic feeling. The food was just great. We loved this restaurant very much and we will definitely return to this restaurant. we highly recommend this place.
I recommend Jamaica Pon di road not this place. The Manager there is very disrespectful. As a Jamaican i wont be going back there to support them sadly. I remember i called multiple times and no answer, Facebook message no answer. Then i went to the store and the manager was still giving attitude saying Because We busy. That is no excuse for attitude and bad customer service, putting a bad name on Caribbean restaurants customer service. Food doesnt taste that good for me to come back here. Disappointing.
Authentic Jamaican cuisine. Good rum punch!
Great Food! I highly recommend the curry goat, last weekend was my first time there after hearing from some Coworkers it was worth the drive there. The gentleman at the bar was fun and professional. I cant wait to return with more of my friends. The owner and supervisor was nice noticed I never been there before and greeted my girlfriend and I welcoming us back later that night it was so much fun the DJ is also great he definitely lives up to his name!!!
Amazing authentic Caribbean food!!! Whenever Im in Cypress, I have to stop in for a meal... Great atmosphere to party on the weekends too. Experience it all, you will not be disappointed
I loved everything. It was well worth it and i will be back soon.
Wonderful place to dine. The brown stew chicken is awesome. If youre looking for a fast-paced place, then Island Spice Bar is not for you. Excellent food and service. It takes a bit of time to get food but it is worth it. Will be coming back.
Would definitely recommend trying out this place. Excellent atmosphere, tasty dishes, great customer service. Kudos.
The food was very tasty and the customer service merits a thumbs up. Check this place out I was satisfied!
I went today @. 3pm and was never acknowledged. After waiting for about 5 min, my daughters and I retrieved our own menu and took a seat. One gentleman that worked there walked out on the phone and the other gentleman can from the back gave a lady a plate and never once looked or came to our table( what’s funny is I had to speak to him). So after another minute I looked at my daughter and explained never spend your money where you aren’t appreciated. We walked out!!!!!We were in the mood for Curry Chicken, yet we walked away with a better lesson. So in all certainty thank you Island Spice we won’t return.
Great atmosphere and great food
This is probably going to be my favorite Jamaican food place. They have themed cheap drinks throughout the week. Music and a cozy atmosphere.
We walked in and no one was there. Too 5 mins for some kid to walk out from the back and give us menus. We ordered and waited an hour. During this time the kid was in the back doing idk what but not paying attention to his job not refilling drinks food finally came and the worst looking $15 shrimp meal I ever saw. This is the jerk shrimp beans hard shrimp overcooked only thing decent was the plantains but how can you mess that up
Love the food at a great price.
Brought the family. Food and Rum Punch were delicious! Brown Stew and Curry Chicken were perfect! Rice and peas were well seasoned. And finally, the cabbage was fresh and cooked to the perfect consistency. The music was a plus! We plan to be regulars!
Great food. I really enjoyed it
The food was good but I gave 2 stars because I Paid 15.95 for oxtail meal with only 2 Oxtails on my plate with a load of beans and rice and plantain.Ill stick to getting Oxtails at Mikkis they are good and give you a good amount!Disappointed
Nice place quiet setting with music, amazing food!
I had a roti and it was very good. Looking forward to going back.
I was a welcoming atmosphere. Was there for a Birthday celebration and had a blast. Didnt get a chance to try their food though. Drinks were on point. Bartender MarkAnthony is a live wire!
Do not visit this place on Sunday. We were the only ones seated and our food still about an hour to prepare. Reduced menu (many unavailable items) that is unfortunately a bad stigma with too many Caribbean restaurants. I do not enjoy writing this when we desperately want to support businesses owned by islanders.
This is the letter I wrote to the manager via email two days ago and still have not heard back and my credit card still hasnt been refunded.I also called yesterday to follow up and still havent heard anything.Good afternoon Ellen,I wanted to share with you, my first time experience with your establishment.I ordered from your restaurant for the first time today.I decided to try the online ordering as I was on my lunch break and had a ways to drive to get to you and also in a time crunch. I figured it would speed up the process. I waited for thirty minutes after placing the order before I went to pick up. only to be told when I got there, my ordered wasnt received.I was okay with that. I waited for ten minutes when Salim came out to tell me there were no beef patties. ( what I ordered) I was still okay with that and reluctantly decided on the chicken patties. Then I waited for another five minutes only to be told there was no curry chicken. (What I ordered)So I paid for my order with no food.It is very disappointing to say the least.I was so excited to try your restaurant for the first time as I heard such great things about you. Also, horrible things, which I ignored. Can you kindly refund my credit card at your earliest convenience?
The oxtail was very salty but the customer service was great. Thanks you orin.
They only get that cause food was tasty. Presentation could have been better. The pregnant hostess teller across the room to see if we were dining in or take out hmmm..not professional minus one star for that. Earned 2 star cause our waiter didnt catch his name was nice he was informative on food as this was our first time there. Minus another star because the pregnant hostess rushed us even though our waiter said to take our time. She couldnt wait to get the tip off the table so did it go to her or him??hhhmmm...questionable. Another star taken because not one single time were we asked if we wanted more water or tea. Most reviews said took forever for food but it wasnt that long for us. So Im unsure if we will be returning.
Great food matches the great atmosphere and some of the friendliest people you’d ever want to meet. Everyone is just like family.
Okay before I say anything . If you are from the southwest side and are used to Cool Runnings they have completely different styles so dont expect to get that type of Jamaican flavor here ! Island Spice is in their own lane so they must be treated as such.So I just moved into the area and really like Jamaican food so I was excited to see one so close by. First of all its legit a real bar. More of a bar vibe then a restaurant which is cool. I was greeted by the bartender and he was super friendly. Tello g me about their specials and live band and Kareoke at night .The atmosphere was pretty dark even though it was day time. You can tell most people take their food to go in the day time, and I was advised to call in next time so I didnt have to wait. Which I plan to do, but the wait was not long at all.Food: the food was delicious ! I loooooovvvveeee plantains and they were the exact type of ripeness for frying . The only complaint I could say was I wanted more lol. The oxtail was fall off the bone. Idk when the other reviews were talking about because my oxtail was fool of flavor and extremely soft and well seasoned. Plus they were very meaty so it was a lot to eat worth the coins . Now the rice and peas are different then what Im used to. Im used to like more of a dry texture but their rice and peas definitely has the sauce of the oxtail poured over it . It wasnt bad just different for me. Although I liked the sauce it was very different flavor then what Im used to again not a bad thing but for those used to cool runnings it is not the same ! I liked the sauce so I was good. All in all a good experience . I plan to stop by one day for their late night events and dine in and enjoy
Nice vibes, awesome owner/management team. Delicious food.
Seems that slow service is a big problem that hasnt been addressed as of Dec. 2019, per reviews, the owner must be filthy rich to keep a place like this running, just and waiter/cook, placed and order it took for ever and I left due to time crunch what should of been 15 to 20 min. Never happened I really want some Caribbean food sorry cant review the food never got it
Food was great and staff very friendly. Duane very nice guy.
The food was delicious! I live in California and will return to enjoy the delicious food.
The food is amazing they gave daily deals and the food is almost fresh
Easy location, great varibbean music and vibe!
Its okay. Personally I will not return. Houston offers better authentic Caribbean cuisine.
Food is ok on the pricey side.
I ordered Oxtails with rice and peas, plantains, and cabbage. The Oxtails and rice and peas very flavorful and delicious. However, I wasn’t impressed with the plantains and cabbage. The cabbage tasted like the cook poured sugar in the cabbage and maybe the cook forgot to wear his or her glasses. I wasn’t able to eat the cabbage because it was way too sweet...yuck and tossed the cabbage in the garbage that I paid $3. The plantains are thinly sliced and fried, so plantains are average taste. If I return, I’ll stick with Oxtails with rice and peas. Great environment and clean.
Best Carribean food in Houston! Great owner!
Great customer service even with me ordering my food to go!
I got the 5 wing lunch special for $7...except you dont get 5 whole wings. I got 5 wing parts which equaled 2.5 wings all together (false advertising). The chicken was reheated instead of freshly made. I was charged $3 xtra for a side of plantains and given 4 thin slices. This was my first time eating here...and last. Im pretty sure customers who dont know better love it. Unfortunately, I know better.
First time there. Mark Anthony the bartender was great! Our server, Rachel... First our food order didnt even get sent to the kitchen. We waited so long she offered us a free drink for the inconvenience. Ok that was nice but when she made our 1 free cocktail on the house it didnt taste right..we still didnt complain... At the end of our stay our bill was $85 we gave her $100 and told her keep the change. Do you know her unprofessional backside followed us outside and had a problem with 15% tip for her incompetence. Talking about she gave us $30 worth of free drinks (uhh...duhh...because we waited an hour for wings and fries and an old tasting salad that she took off the bill) Like I said... Mark Anthony was wonderful, funny and energetic. But that Rachel chick...no bueno!
I was my first time going to the place and ive must say the food was delicious, customer service to the point . Marc Anthony was great bringing the food and making us the drinks . Definitely we be back to try diffrent type of food .
Great atmosphere and even better food
Walked in this afternoon, really in the mood for some jerk chicken... maybe a bottle of Ting. Restaurant was completely empty... not just diners, but staff. I waited at the bar for a few minutes expecting someone would eventually come from the back and help. Not a soul. Wish I could review the food, but unfortunately I didnt get a chance to get any. Might wanna turn down the music so you can hear customers come in. This was a first
Anthony the bartender had his mother verbally assault my Bestfriend on her birthday this July 19,2019.The bartender pocketed 20 dollars of our money and provided no drinks! The bartenders mother began hurling insults and trying to be physical. It was a sad situation and even tho I stepped in to diffuse it the nappy headed red head mom kept up her shenaningans! I had eleven people with me...none of us are coming back!
AWESOME, AMAZING VIBEZ! 5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THIS PLACE. AWESOME LUNCH SPECIALS DURING THE WEEK....BUT A DOPE PLACE TO CHILL ON A FRIDAY NIGHT!!
I forgot to take a picture of the jerk chicken meal we got because it was so good that it disappeared into our bellies within minutes! The food was spicy, but just enough to clear sinuses without choking you! They have so many options to choose from as well. I recommend this place to those who dont know much about Caribbean/African cuisine because good taste is universal!
Don’t waste your money here!!! Everyone go check out Cool Runnings..
Island Spice/SMITHYS Is a fun and inviting atmosphere for everyone! The customer service, the ownership and the food are all top notch. This is a great place for everyone to come and enjoy! Good people, good food and good music! What more could a person want or need? THIS IS THE PLACE!
Im a foodie so I try to explore as much as possible. Ive been to Island spots all over the city of Houston and so far Island spice has the best Ox Tails and Rum punch hands down! As a matter of fact they season their meat perfect. The only thing I was underwhelmed about was the patty pies. Thats it!
Its not the jamaican spice Im used to. And my rice was a bit overcooked.
Great food and drinks
We are beyond upset ! I went to this location once last December in 2017 & had a blast . I came back all the way from South Carolina excited to take my girlfriend with me to share the fun experience I had being I am Guyanese and enjoy Caribbean spots . We walked into this place tonight, June 9th @ about 12:45 a.m, we went to the rest room and stood in the corner and danced about 5 minutes before the owner marched towards us, and said you can’t come and dance, unless you buy a drink. We LITERALLY had been there 5 minutes and he came to us so rudely. We didn’t even a chance to buy a drink, I felt he said that to us because us because we were obviously a lesbian couple . Regardless we were uncomfortable and couldn’t believe what happened and left . Would never go back !
I went to get food tonight and not only did i have to wait over 30 minutes, they gave me the wrong order. I dont plan pn ever going back. Absolutely unprofessional and horrible service. I called to inform them my order was wrong and was going to take it back but decided they could just keep the damn money because i will not set foot in there again! My worst experience ever! Trash!
If you like good Caribbean music and food, this is the spot for you. The atmosphere is fun and friendly. The DJ will keep you dancing all night.
Great food loved the feel to it and the fact that its also a club
Had the best experience at this off the map spot. The Curry shrimp was off the chain and the fried plantain was the best yet. Its the best Caribbean food Ive had in Houston.
The food here is delicious, however, the wait time for food was way too long. We arrived here at 8:11pm, placed an order at 8:20pm. We ordered a beef and chicken patty as an appetizer, 2 cocktails and oxtails and jerk chicken w/ rice for our entree. The beef patty arrived at 840pm and our entrees arrived at 8:56pm. Mind you we still didnt get the chicken patty. When our waiter brought the food out, I inquired about the chicken patty and he said it should be out in 2 minutes. My family and I finished our meals by 9:20pm, still no chicken patty. I asked for the check and the waiter took off the chicken patty from our bill and bagged it for us to take home. If it wasnt for the wait time, I would have rated this restaurant a 5 star. I honestly didnt want to leave a tip, but my husband insisted. Im in a customer service industry and at no point did we receive an apology for waiting so long and our order not being correct. The place was not busy at all! At the most, there were 4 tables of people dining in. They had 1 cook, 2 bartenders/waiters and both owners were present chatting and laughing at the bar. This will be my last time coming here! I strongly suggest ordering your food before you arrive. At least it will be ready to eat by the time you get there.
EVERYTHING we ordered was good!
I am very disappointed! My husband and I heard about Island Spice Restaurant. We were so excited looking for good Caribbean food in texas. When we got to the restaurant the hostess/waiter didn’t greet us and he took 10 minutes before coming back to take our order. Then it took another 30-40 minutes for our food to come when we ordered. Then our “waiter” left and we were left alone with the chefs in the back. The Lo-Mein should not be called “Lo-Mein”.The noodles are hard, not cooked all the way and have too much oil plus the chicken is cut way too big. The coco bread sandwich my husband ordered, you cannot eat! The bread was hard and could not be chewed and the jerk chicken is chewy and mushy. I know Caribbean food being Guyanese and have been eating Caribbean food my whole life and this is not it. I am truely disappointed. The only good thing was the cream soda.
Amber and her family are great. I will recommendIsland Grill to all my friends and family.
The was food was magnificent. my taste buds are still jumping and I have left the building . I would recommend this place to Anyone .
Best curry goat flavorful tender yummy spices!
As always everything is always great when we go there or pick up.
Good food from backa yard.
Horrible, the wait is extremely long and there’s no waitress just the guy at the bar. I definitely would not recommend coming to this place. I have been waiting for more than an hour.
Good music and food
Awesome food and drinks. Also, I love the music Fridays. Big shout out to the DJ.
I gave 1 star for the CUSTOMER SERVICE 5 STAR for cleanliness. But cant tell you about the food...I didnt get served I heard so many good things about this spot but got disappointed. Perhaps Ill try on a different day and time.
All for supporting others businesses but no matter how good the food is the unbelievable lack of service is unacceptable. We order to go and live 15-20 minutes away giving enough time for order preparation but the past several times our order has not only been incorrect but not ready either. If I order the person taking the order should know what items are not available and not make a substitution as they feel would be good. The time it takes to order get there, wait 5 minutes to be acknowledged, wait for 5 more for them to make the order, then 5 more to correct it and argue with you on what you ordered, another 5 to ring your order up and pay. I could drive slightly further and go elsewhere.
I had the vegetarian dish with the cabbage, potatoes and chickpeas. It was delicious. I like sweet, and added a tad bit of the pepper sauce
I love this place! The food and drinks are delicious.
Great customer service and great food the food tastes authentic
Great place to eat during the weekdays. During the weekend nights it turns into a really cool lounge. The DJs music is pretty good the times Ive been.
Food was great, tried this new pineapple ginger soda it was real good. I will definitely be back.
Island Spice is famous for their tasty oxtails and classic rum punch..one of the best caribbean restaurants in the houston / katy area..Fridays and Saturday nights extend till 2 am with a house dj that plays soca and reggae and all of the latest hip hop and latin music..it is a family owned business so as a customer you also become like family..they know everyone by name and their customer service is excellent..very clean..authentic caribbean..classy place..another awesome dish is their red snapper and a personal favorite is their curry goat..i give Island Spice 10 stars..
I like this place staff was nice
Gr8 place
