A beautiful building sitting on well maintained grounds that is well worth a visit if you are in Harrisburg, PA. One can generally find street parking within walking distance of the Capitol Building. One has to go through security to get into the building, which is a lot easier if one is selective in terms of what one carries. Plan to have lunch in the cafeteria -- a good selection at reasonable prices.

This is probably the most impressive state capitol of all the 50 states. The building cost millions to built at the turn of last century and it shows from the chandeliers to the gold leaf trim. If you are in the area this is a must see. Take a detour off the Turnpike and take a tour of this magnificent building. If you still have time take a tour of the State Museum next door. Re-live Pennsylvanias history. There are some good restaurants within walking distance of the Capitol Complex if you get hungry or you can visit the fine cafeteria right in the Capitol building.

The capitol building is absolutely beautiful! I took my five-year-old son and he also enjoyed it. We walked around a bit on our own, but also went on the short (30 mins) guided tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and it seems like she truly loves her job and the building. My son was a big fan of the Welcome Center downstairs in the East Wing.If you go on a weekday, I believe youre able to walk through more of the building on your own - they have more portions closed off on the weekends.I look forward to going back. It truly is a sight to see.

Yes its the State capitol and yes its a building but this is a gem if youre a history and architecture buff. The 100+ year old building has hundreds of tiles created by Mercer in Bucks County. The Pennsylvania State Capitol building is one of the most ornate in the country. It is absolutely lovely and worth checking out. Book a free tour on the state capital website. It can get crowded and reserving a place is a good idea. The tour allows you to see rooms you would not be able to get to otherwise. In the weekend you have to use the main rotunda entrance which is on Third and state street. There is lots of street parking and there is wheel chair access. You have to go through security so get there a little early. There was no queue in the weekend but during the week it can get crowded.

I go to the Pennsylvania State capitol often. I enjoy the beautiful building since it is one of the prettiest state buildings I have ever gone. I have tried to speak with State Representative Daryl Metcalfe about total LGBTQ anti discrimination protection under the law since the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does not have it at the moment. He has not spoken to me at all. I have taken a picture of that door .All I want is to have a simple one on one conversation with the man nothing else. Yesterday I went and spoke with a bunch of Republican lawmakers and they are not for LGBT anti-discrimination protection . I Spoke with My state Senator John DiSantoHe used the classic no by saying I will take it under consideration. Then he quickly walked out to go somewhere! I am a constituent and I felt like he just threw me away it does not care about me by the way he walked away! I also had conversations with a bunch of other state lawmakers about my issues including legalization of marijuana.. I seem to get resistance for my issues from the Republican party. The Republican party is keeping the Commonwealth from actually progressing in a positive manner.. I also found it disturbing at the Capitol because Im diabetic and live on food stamps I cannot get any food in the cafeteria of the Commonwealth Capitol.. They dont take food stamps. My blood sugars really dropped yesterday and I almost passed out but I could not get any food at the Capitol because they dont allow food stamps use. The Commonwealth needs to do better..

The tour was short with very little info, compared to others. The building itself was very nice! We have enough gold and precious materials in the capital to pay off the United States debts. I was very impressed by the architect and artwork that went into this Capitol building. Its a good place to meet with your state representatives and to have Rallys to push important bills through. Wonderful offices to work in, very secure, handicap accessible to all complete with a cafeteria although I would consider the food that was served to be substandard and a better quality needed for our state representatives. I must stop in if youre in the area Harrisburg Pennsylvania

My friend had her wedding ceremony right inside the Capital Rotunda. The Rotunda itself is absolutely beautiful. Add the ambience of a wedding it truly feels magical. The only thing that really sucks here is the parking. It was a Sunday when she got married so we were lucky that the meters are off on Sundays. Otherwise you would be walking maybe a block or two for parking. Absolutely gorgeous place. You walk in and the staircase itself is just the “wow” factor. Truly beautiful.

Harrisburg is Beautiful city, but definitely has some dark sides to it. Theres a lot of non profits eating up good money that should be going to help people. For example, the Pa Council of Churches claim to be a Christian church and a non profit never preach the gossip or help the poor in any way but they rake in state and local funding. The place is a den of thieves. The person running the place is one of the worst corrupt and evil people around. A real con artist.

Theodore Roosevelt called it the most beautiful Capitol building in the US. I am so fortunate to be able to admire it on my daily commute! The Exterior. Its American Renaissance architecture is stunning: the dome, the marble sculptures at the main entrance, the court yard, the fountain... Its surrounding views are also marvelous: The front lines with the charming State Street all the way to the Susquehanna River. The north side borders the State Museum and State Archive. The south is integrated with the Capitol Park adjacent to the Strawberry Square. And the east neighbors the Soldiers Grove overlooking the long array of street lamps. The Rotunda. Its a cardinal sin if you pass by the Capitol Building without going inside and behold the beauty and magnificence of the Rotunda. You dont even have to be in a tour and you can see it any day during the day time. The Tour. I dont know of any other tour that is as available as the tour of the Capitol Building. The free guide tours are conducted every 30 minutes M-F 8:30-4:00 and every 2 hour Sat-Sun 9:00-3:00. You get to see the Senate Chamber, the House Chamber, and the Surpreme Court Chamber. Though dwarfed compared to the grandeur of the Rotunda, each of them are impressive in its own right. The Senate Chamber in particular, features half dozens of enormous and ornate chandeliers, Greek Corinthian columns, green marbles, stained glass windows, and crowns and trims glazed in gold. I have not experienced seeing Senate in session though. Someday I will.Parking. There are plenty of paid street parking. You can download an app and deposit more money as needed remotely. $3 per hour is quite expensive. You can park at residents zone permit parking for free between 10:00 and 3:00 if you can find one.

My family lived on 3rd Street across from the steps when I was born, and my mother later worked as a secretary for several state senators on the 4th floor of the capitol, so I spent a lot of time there into my teens. I went there for the first time in 2015 after I got to know several senators. I was not aware when I was a professional photographer that you could just go in and walk around. I was usually there on the weekend then. My sister was a stenographer for George Gekas during his years here. I was young then and my sister never told me I could have visited. After I became a resident of Harrisburg I became more aware of all the various things to do. I was fascinated with the tiles on the floor representing the culture of PA. I was allowed on the weekdays to go anywhere. I talked to many, i went into the visitors area to watch a session, I was allowed to visit many ornate offices. Sometimes people were in there working. I appologized thinking I should not have entered. Their response? Why no. Please come in. I learned more than a book could provide. It was amazing. The building is beautiful, the people are very knowledeable, I met even more senators, representatives, and got to fully embrace the Capitol Complex like I never before knew.
