For any sea, air, or space fan this is the place for you. They have models and exhibits of everything from air craft carriers to Mars rovers. You can simulate a space flight all the way to landing a lunar lander. There is a cafe for food and drinks. There is an elevator for easy handicap access. The IMAX theater is the largest in the area and always has at least 3 different movies showing multiple times a day. Highly suggested for kids and the young at heart.
We come here at least once a week during the summer! The kids I nanny for love it there. We love the movies as well as the always changing exhibits. Tons of stuff to do!
Very modern and clean museum. Most of the hands on exhibits work. Very good mix of aeronautical and space exhibits, highlighted by the Apollo XII spacecraft. Museum also has an IMAX theater. Extensive, very accurate, well made and displayed collection of spacecraft and aircraft models. This air and space museum rivals the Smithsonians. The gift shop was out of the larger size T shirts.
Always a pleasure to visit the air and space center. Their exhibits are great and they have something for everyone of all ages there. I especially love the monthly lectures they have. It is free to attend them.
A real great experience. We got there shortly after 10 am and stayed until 4pm. There is alot to explorer and alot to do and touch. We did also visit the Washington space Museum but think that this one is alot more fun.
Absolutely fantastic place to visit! Everything from the earliest Wright brothers plane to the Apollo 12 capsule. Many Interactive exhibits for children and adults. Educational as well as a lot of fun. Highly recommend!
Good for learning for the family. Went on a Thursday but 5-7 interactive displays/ exhibits were not working which took away the fun from a smaller air and space museum compared to larger ones we have been to. Great IMAX show though!
Very nice museum. Wish it was larger and had more exhibits.
Here is another five star place.I can not even count how many times i have been here weather it was a field trip or just to visit . It has great attraction. personally my two favorite things are the coin presser and the air plane were you can sit in it. and the paper air plane thing
Great place to learn about the history of flight. Kids of all ages: little kids, and teens will all enjoy it. Very interesting place. Also has a flight simulator where you can turn all directions, including upside down. Parking garage nearby. Good attraction to visit when in the Norfolk area.
Fun & educational family time in downtown Hampton. Fun interactive displays. Very informative on historical space exploration. Cool to see plane models up close. Friendly staff.
The historical aircraft are amazing to be able to see.
Great museum to learn about flight and space travel. Plenty of interactive exhibits which are ideal for kids as well as adults. IMAX ticket is included with admission and I highly recommend seeing Apollo 11 if it is showing. For space they have the Apollo 12 capsule, a Mercury capsule, a gemini test capsule, an orion capsule, plenty of rocket models, life size Rover models, simulators, space station parts, missiles and sounding rockets, and plenty more. There are also a large selection of fighter and historic aircraft (see photos), a commercial airliner you can explore, wright flyer plane replica, interesting aeronautical science demonstrations, and more.
Was kinda disappointed because a lot of the stuff did not work I guess that was because of this covid. But it was still fun for myself and my grand kids.
Its 4 stars for content and 5 for location. Its not huge, but there is a lot of good information. And its right on the water
Awesome fun learning about space travel and aircraft history. Membership is a great deal with IMAX movie included.
It takes some practice but things are coming along fine. Thanks for asking.
The Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton is filled with planes, spaceships and other projects from NASAs Langley facility. +an IMAX theater and interactive activities for kids. The museum does not look big but we wore out before seeing everything. This facility focuses more on space technology than astronomy. So youll learn a lot about rockets, planes and extraterrestrial rovers, but not so much about the moon or planets. I give it 4/5 because we found several displays to be non-functional.
Very satisfied. The staff was friendly and we had a GREAT TIME!
Wow! This place is really great! It is full of airplanes, rockets, and space information, and is so well laid out its easy to get around and see. Its three floors, all open space. There are also interactive features, and a play area for very small children. You can even take the elevator to the top of the roof outside and look at the view. Theres a small restaurant inside that I did not try, but the food smelled delicious! Your price of admission includes a movie as well - either space-related or just family-friendly. Very reasonable, very clean, the staff was wonderful. In 2 hours I still did not get all the way through it and had to leave. I will be back.
I really enjoyed my visit.I don’t have kids, so I can’t speak to the exhibits geared towards them, but I had a great time looking at the Apollo 12 capsule, the Mars exploration area, and the variety of aircraft suspended in the main hall.I watched the Hubble 3D imax movie - it was fantastic. Finally, Kathie was a super friendly and informative docent who started speaking to me and then personally took me through a few exhibits.
Having been to Hampton multiple times I decided to visit this museum. The exhibits were interesting
Great for kids! A simulator for only 5.00 extrs. A great Imax theater featuring Apollo 11 movie. Nice technology so you can pretend you are landing a rover etc.
Well.. i get that covid is probably a big factor here, but we walked in yesterday for a science day with our son.. it was $20 per person for admission and literally half of interactive perspective of the museum was broken. The touch screens werent working so we could only read the basic facts.. definitively not worth $20 per person for this in times like these.
What an excellent place to learn about the history of aviation of our wonderful country United States of America. When you tour this great facility you will learn and feel the history of aviation and flight. From the Wright brothers to the landing of Apollo 12, on the moon to the space shuttle to the present day of AviationI encourage everyone to tour this museum and you will be surprise and you will feel great about learning about aviation in the United States of America
Very disappointed that masks were not enforced in the IMAX theatre. Everyone had a mask on in line but when we took our seats in the theater literally every family excepts us and another family took their masks off! I was shocked! I walked out and spoke to 2 employees about it and was told someone would be in to address but no one ever came. There was enough room for all to be social distanced but since we were in a indoor theatre, masks should’ve been enforced like their websites states. While walking through the rest of the museum most did have masks on. The museum was just okay, there were some interactive activities that were not working. I felt the exhibits were geared toward kids 12+ and adults.
I myself love NASA. This isnt just space but also a bunch of stuff that is related to flight. Starting with hot air balloons and going to modern day. It is educational along with fun. There is a flight simulator that you can do. The flight simulator is a little challenging, but once you got the controls, you got it. You can also land Discovery on three different difficulties. The last simulation is one where you can launch, pilot, land, and drive a rover on Mars. There are two other planets you can do but those I dont remember. If you love or even enjoy space or flight, go here.
Great smaller museum to explore and see lots of history in one condensed trip. Takes approximately 2-4 hours depending on how much reading you want to do and how much time you want to spend looking at everything. Not overly busy on a Sunday around 2pm in April. Lots of learning and great little gift shop.
Tired and unloved. When I visited various exhibits were closed with no indication why.(Opportunities to get inside some craft.)The highest planes have not been cleaned for years. I know its a big specialist job but needs done.Street scrolling sign said now showing Hurricane. Very appropriate. Except it is not showing!Windows in the end of the hall are brown stained from sun or chemicals.Overall a bit of a disappointment.
Awesome place, cool simulations. They have a 5 dollar flight simulator, full 360 degree movement. You can fly a rocket into orbit, and you can also land the space shuttle. So much to look at, Ill definitely be going back
Very informative experience. Great for the family as the exhibits are kid-friendly.
Lots of fun! Lots of attractions need updating
Great place to bring the kids for the day. My 9 year old son had an amazing time checking out all of the aircraft and interactive activities.
Not worth the money. Over half the monitors are off. Huge section is closed. Displays are broken. There are displays with wires hanging out where something should have been. Won’t be back and won’t recommend
So this place is a little pricey but worth every cent. My husband was like a kid on Christmas and my son was in awe (he is three). I recommend the small lab for your little ones. And definitely take advantage of the free IMAX movie that comes w admission. The simulator is 4 bucks. Just be warned parking is across the street. Theres an open lot or the parking garage. They do have an elevator plus lots of stairs!
It was an amazing experience since me and my family are really interested in aeronautical and space crafts also the military aircrafts. And the Apollo 11 documentary was really very good experience in IMAX. A must visit with kids it keeps them busy for at least 3-4 hrs
Great place to enjoy some relaxation while teaching the kids some history.
Im from Florida and love the Kennedy Space Center! We still decided to come here because we heard they had some incredible pieces of history and it didnt disappoint. There were some interactive pieces that were broken and it took a long time to get through the concession stand before our movie but we loved that admission came with an IMAX ticket! Staff was very friendly.
The museum has improved a lot over the years. I had a good time with my sons class trip. My only complaint would be that there werent very many interactive exhibits. Not really too much for the children to get into. The IMAX however never disappoints! We saw Our Beautiful Planet and it was breathtaking. Staff and museum guides were professional, polite and very knowledgeable.
Somewhat small museum and the entry ticket is expensive for what the museum offers. A couple of good scientific experiences for flying and thats it. There is nothing on the 3rd floor but its listed on the map of the facility
A Merry Go round outside before you go into the museum. Awesome. A good way to pump up the boys.
How did they get all the airplanes and spacecraft in here? Great place to dream.
We went with 3 children ages 8 to 16. We all had a great time. You can easily spend several hours there.
The amount of exhibits and interactive exhibits here is enormous. Makes you think how they had fit some of the aircraft inside but its truely a wonder. Theres an IMAX theater which is an amazing experience and truly defying. The museum is well kept and many of the exhibits youll see are mind-blowing if youre an aviation/space enthusiast. The history and stories behind each exhibit in here, have it and to have a tour would be even better. A must visit.
What an amazing place to go and spend the day! My kids and I loved it and cant wait to go back! The woman who was working in the gift shop was also amazing, great experience all around.
This place is great for the most part, especially to take the kids to. There are a lot of stellar exhibits for aspiring astronauts, and its a great way to put military ships and planes into an aviation/space context. Its educational AND fun, especially if you have a great love of anything space. The only lessened part of this place is that a few of the exhibits are not working to the extent they should, but the place seems like a consistent work-in-progress and its only getting better!Final note: If you have a membership to many other science center type places from across the U.S. it can possibly be used here, which is really nicely if youre a tourist or military family. Entirely worth the membership price!
This place is awesome! We came all the way from MA to Virginia Beach and needed something to do while waiting to check into our campground. We stopped here because both my boyfriend and I LOVE outer space and learning about NASA. Did not disappoint! The IMAX Apollo 11 movie was absolutely incredible! And the staff was very knowledgeable. Thanks for a great experience!!
Nice. Not all the exhibits are open.
Full of history
This place is amazing! There is so much to do and see, fun for kids as well!
Amazing place to go and learn the history of all things aeronautical. From the Wright Brothers to current space exploration, it has it all!
Wonderful items to explore. Needs more for kids
We were lucky enough to have had the whole place to ourselves. Watched the Apollo 11 movie and we were the only two in the whole IMAX theater. The staff are great and a joy to talk too. They are the story tellers behind the displays around the museum. Each piece has a story, so dont avoid the staff, talk to them. They have a lot to tell. We were there for 5 hours.
Great interactive center for the entire family. Amazing collection or REAL aircrafts and space capsules. IMAX is free with membership. We love coming here once a month and it’s worth the drive.Deducted one star since some interactive consoles require maintenance
Several things you will not see anywhere else. Lots of interactive exhibits. IMAX.
This is a wonderful place for aviation and space history. I went way, way out of my way to come here to see the Apollo 12 command modual. It was displayed in such an organic and close up way. It was worth the trip. You simply cannot get closer or more alone with such a piece of Apollo history. The docents were very knowledgeable and helpful. Great place!
Great place to see, planes, learn about science.
Easy to get to from the interstate. Parking is free at the garage across the street. Lots of one-of-a-kind memorabilia from what used to be a small visitor center at NASA-Langley. Reasonable admission prices. Sponsor of local science-related lecture series. A boon to Hampton.
Went here with my girlfriend and had a great time. There was a million kids from the YMCA but it was still not packed. The movie was great and the exhibits are fun for all ages! Would go again!
Fun, educational, exciting IMAX, but some things were closed
Fun for the kids. Very educational and 3D movie was awesome
A great place to visit with the family. The IMAX show was amazing, and the view from the observation deck isnt bad either.
Fun interactive museum for the whole family. Lots of stuff to touch and do. SW lots of little kids but I think middle school kids and even older teens would have a great time.
Not what I expected. If youre into aircrafts, youll love it. I felt it was overpriced for the lack of what was offered.
It was a very nice museum, very informative. There were several displays that werent working and a few that were closed off. I thought it was odd that so many werent available, especially on a Saturday. Nevertheless, it was still a good experience.
Small but mighty. With being from Alexandria, Virginia, we have many other museums of interest in our local area. It was really great (not just good) to drop by. The hands on displays for the kids were far beyond what the Smithsonian offers kids. Also, there were no crowds and we were able to wander without having to wait in line to read/look/experience each display. At first there didnt seem to be as much to see as we have previously experienced at the Smithsonian - Udvar Hazy at Dulles, but then you start to realize what they have and why, and the story takes shape. It all makes sense. We were so happy to have such a wide selection of both air and space in one museum that we will be back.
It was very interesting & we watched a 3D Imax movie
Awesome museum, Imax, great knowledgeable staff, friendly, great exhibits, cant say enough about it. There is a lovely little park just east of the main building with a gorgeous carousel. Highly recommend the Air & Space Museum as well as the carousel.
A great place in Hampton. I never saw an Orion capsule before. Apollo 12 command module is there! Fantastic.
Interactive and informative exhibits for people of all ages
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! So many examples of air and space craft throughout the ages, interactive exhibits to engage the visitors, and a really cool solarium! They even have a B-24, a replica Wright flyer, a DC-9 that you can board, and so much more! I actually enjoy this one more than the one in Huntsville, AL. They also have a flight simulator!
It was a good place to go because its educational. There are a lot of Hands-On activities there.
Attended this facility for a private event, it did not disappoint! Awesome interactive displays for the children and adults, the kids had an amazing time exploring the full size passenger plane, and scientific displays letting them learn how it all worked, super family friendly, and a definite visit!
Very cool place to visit. Super educational and interactive for all ages. You get a free 45 minute IMAX movie with entry. Tons of cool stuff. Great place for all ages.
Very friendly staff and awesome attractions and movies
This museum had a lot of interesting exhibits about space. Good for space or air lover.
Great place to learn science and math awesome place to bring your family and your students. The staff is amazing I cant wait for my next visit.
Such sweet volunteers who genuinely love to teach! Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable.
Interactive museums are always fun.
Had some cool exhibits, but the price was a little too much for the size and amount of things to do.
Visited by myself, if you are a space or aviation enthusiast, there is plenty to see here. Spent 3 hours here including an IMAX show. Definitely worth a visit.
Awesome local fun, educational center. Great during Pirate Fest!
It was a good air conditioned side trip....worth a look if you have an interest in aerospace and aircraft.
Worth a visit. Tickets seem a bit expensive for what is inside. A 45 minute Imax movie is included with admission whether you want it or not. Parking is right across the street and free. Lots of full size planes and aircraft in addition to detailed models. Several of the hands on exhibits are broken or closed.
Needs a better layout and plan of the exhibits. Many are haphazardly placed around building, with no rhyme or reason. Also, many of the exhibits need to be better maintained and cleaned. The references and exhibits (if you can call them that) to women in NASA and aviation were abysmal. Langley and Hampton VA is the home of the Hidden Figures women of STEM color and only 2 very poor posters. Should be, must be, much better.
Lovely for what its worth. Too many of the hands on exhibits were inoperable or broken. I understand the need to place the cover charge funding where it needs to go but the disrepair will yield disappointed patrons, especially children.
Really enjoyed the imax movie about the Apollo 11 landing. Impressive display and even an observation deck to view the area.
A smaller museum but good displays.
Wonderful place to inspire your kids and yourself. Good variety of hands on activities, 3D IMAX movies and STEM activities for members and public make the membership here worth it.
Since I was a young child I always have had an interest in human space exploration. During my career in the United States Navy I had visited, at least annually, the Virginia Air and Space Center and always enjoyed the experience. I have met Star Trek actors and real-life astronauts during some of those past visits.Just recently I had a desire to impart some of that learned past knowledge, share current explorations and experiences, and present some visions of the future to my seven-year-old grandson. He participated in many of the hands-on displays and flew rockets and spaceships, taking a trip to Mars and other planets, saw a real Moon rock, and a real spacecraft in the Apollo 12 Command Module. He learned about engineering building bridges and constructing a rocketship in the STEM exhibit. We had a wonderful day together and want to return. Maybe, someday . . .
Great for the kids. Adults can geek out
Its one of the very few NASA Visitor Centers in the nation... you have to visit! You can come up close and personal with the Apollo 12. THE APOLLO 12! This is the second capsule to land on the moon. You can even see the friction burns from re-entry into the atmosphere. If its a nice day, dont leave without visiting the third floor observation deck. Its one of my favorite places. If you visit without seeing an IMAX movie, youre missing out! The Center is undergoing masterplanning as of 2017.. so expect some major changes in the next few years. Its a pretty eye opening place to visit.
A good portion of the displays were closed for repairs or renovation (as of 13 Jul 19), but what was up was fun and engaging. Staff were all polite and knowledgeable. Definitely will head there again when my son is a bit older! Ill be sure to update the review then too.
Smallish museum but with so much information it will keep you busy for many hours. Great information about NASA and some NACA stuff. We watched the Apollo 11 IMAX which was very impressive and very well done. The staff was top and always at hand to help with something or give some advice!
Very excited to see this place. The movies are great. Could not see all in one day. Will definitely be back
After the school kids cleared out it got way better. Very cool museum.
