Fun layout, great location right off interstate 40. Back 9 was really fun.
Played here with my brother and 2 buddies Saturday. This place needs some work. Tee boxes arent level. No sand available to fill divots. Nobody repairs ball marks.... We also had the pleasure of the starter come up to us on 18th green. Scolded and cursed us out for finishing 18 in 4 and half hours. I must say, I have never had this happen to me in 30 years of playing golf. Absolutely un-imaginable at my private CC. I wont be returning here ever again.
Im very surprised to see so many negative reviews of this place. I only started playing here a few months ago and thought that maybe a fresh perspective would help guide people toward one of the best value courses in the area. I legitimately love the Challenge, which is aptly named. Its not a long course, but if youre a low to mid 90s golfer like myself, youll enjoy the different shots it presents you with. Theres actual strategy to many of the holes (see 6, 7, 10, and 18) and you are rewarded for clean tee shots with the right club. The course is in great condition, Im surprised to hear people say otherwise. Ive found a home here. And also, I saw discussion of $40 twilight rates... no idea where thats coming from. Its $30 for 18 holes after 5 p.m., and around this time of year (late June/early July) you shouldnt have any problem getting all the way around. Great course, good people.
The Challenge was a really nice and well managed course. We made the turn and a 2 sum let my 4 sum play through, and then proceeded to play on our tails, hitting the ball on the green as we were walking off. I would recommend this course during nonbusy hours.
This place doesnt reflect to how its being characterized on the website. The staff was rude when they finally showed up! Didnt feel comfortable or welcomed! We thought the course itself was in good shape unfortunately not worth the time and price because of pro/staff. Golf is supposed to be a sport of inclusion?!
Nice course, nice staff, very customer service friendly. I just wish the staff would wear a mask because they are so nice I would hate to see any of them suffer from this terrible virus.
The course was beautiful..Loved it best grass n greens i ever played..But got matched up w/ th biggest A-hole ever..Crabby old man..Was ok till i warmed up n started out playing him..got mouthy w me n threw my whole game off...but had a great time other wise n will be back..
First time I had played here in several years. Course as always, still in great shape. Nice folks, good rates.
Give the greens another few weeks for the recent aeration. Greens still bumpy but can make putts. Conditions are excellent.
Atmosphere was great. Club personnel were helpful and friendly. Greens were terrible.
In great shape, very fast greens, well worth the money!!
Good service. Greens werent great due to recent rain.
Paid for a cart pre-round. Show up to the course and was paired with a random, then told we would share a cart during COVID-19 pandemic, despite NC & Alamance county rules to maintain social distancing.Went back to clubhouse to request my own cart I paid for and was told that it would cost $10 more, despite it being included in my green fees.Risking the lives of you patrons for $10?Not a good look.
Excellent service, conditioning, scenery, and value.Top notch public golf course that lives uo to its name- challenge .Definitely on my must play list!Thank you.
Great and challenging course. Greens are perfect!
Really enjoy playing this course.
5 HOUR ROUNDS ON A MONDAY. No ranger and people in the clubhouse couldnt have cared less. His answer They really jammed in the tee timed this morning I guess Course condition was exponentially better than it was 2 years ago. Greens and all around facility was great. 4 1/2 star course, 2 1/2 star facility with staff. Wont be back anytime soon.
Great place and the staff was great
Nice course. Difficult for a novice like me. Lots of water and hazards so fun and challenging. Looks like it does not handle rain well and was cart path only 2 days after heavy but short rain, so going was very slow: 4 hours to do 12 holes (went home rather than take 2 more hours to finish). Nonetheless lots of fun. Im thinking this course is best played when it hasnt rained in a while.
Excellent course for all skill levels. Course lives up to the name. Blue and black tees present a unique challange than any other local course. White and red tees are just close enough to give the mid to high handicapper a easy but challenging round. Greens are absolutely phenomenal and super fast. Tee boxes are a little spotty but seem to be working on them. Price tag on the weekend is a little pricey but at 49$ but it is a beauty. Management is friendly and very helpful. Highly recommend playing this course. You will enjoy
Super nice. Took my son and he chipped a few and putted some of the greens and they were so reasonable for my son. They are working on several tee boxes, however the layout was very nice ... shorter
They don’t allow coolers but no beer girl or boy came around. For the price we paid for 18 holes I would of expected course to be in great shape. Allot of mowing needed to be done as we rode up to the T box on many holes.
Maintenance crew has done a great job on this course. Greens are in fantastic shape!
Great conditions for winter golf.
My daughter loves playing golf here!!
This is a solid golf course.
Great shape...lightin fast greens that roll so true.
Course was in decent condition. Greens were in good shape. However, they allowed a fivesome in front of my group at 10 on a Saturday. Poor judgement on behalf of the professional staff. Wont be going back.
I played this course for the first time today while driving through the area. Pro shop staff are top shelf and the course layout is a real gem especially for the money. I will be back. Also played as a single and ran into 4 groups of golfers that all let me play through immediately. 2 hr round and loved it
I always liked the layout. Now, the greens are finally good! Not perfect- like they probably should be after a redo- but really pretty good! I would definitely would recommend now.
Course conditions have improved considerably. Greens are fantastic!
$40 twilight to play here on dead fairways and greens? Said they were going up to $50 when they greened up? Good luck. The challenge was a good course and decent value at $40 in season. This course isnt worth the increased rates. Wont be back.
An excellent value as the course continues to recover from Lost greens. All are in Fairly good shape so and Fairways are beautiful. I will definitely be back
Good course for an economical 18 holes of golf. Bit windy and cold on our visit but that was obviously not the fault of the course. However, would be a good idea to have someone in charge of recharging the ball washers. A few of the hole signs need repaired as well. Hole 6 and 18 are challenging. Fairways are wide and forgiving. Greens were hard and fast and bumpy. Staff was kind and helpful.
Most of the greens and tee boxes were not in shape, however its been raining a lot so I understand that development will take time.
Greens were great, fairways and tee box needs some filling in, overall good condition.
Played this course last week and was so impressed how maintained everything was. Can’t wait to come back during the warmer part of the season to see what the course has to offer.
In great condition. Greens are especially excellent.
Beautiful well maintained course, nice club house.
The course is in very very good shape they are keeping the leaves off of fairway and greens the staff is top notch always greet you with a smilebeer selection is good sandwich selections are good you need to try it ..Its been a year since I started playing here and the course condition has been phenomenal. The staff should be very proud of what they have accomplished after a winter that had destroyed their greens and tee boxes. THUMBS UP!!!Here we are April 19th, 2020 and The Challenge has ensured we provide a Safe environment for the golfers and their families. The golf course is in great shape and the staff is doing everything possible for us to enjoy ourselves during this COVID-19 pandemic. One very positive thing is many golfers are choosing to WALK. This makes it possible for The Challenge to have golf carts for those who desire them.Constant cleanup is taking place as the staff has made a healthy and safe environment their #1 priority. Thank You
Played this course today for first time. Is in great shape and fairways are wide open. Will definitely go back again ASAP. Great value.
Beautiful greens, fairways were sometimes a challenge.
Best bang for your buck the course is usually in great shape. One thing that I really like about this course is that it is long so you will need more than just your pitching wedge every time.
The greens are great right now, and its a great track for $39 @ 8am. A must play if youre in the area!
Plenty of shade on the hottest days to play
The name says it all! Challenging course with good fairways and greens, though they are starting to have a few bare spots on some of the more exposed ones. For the price, though, its a great deal!
Guy in pro shop on weekend just cares about taking care of his friends, discouraging for new play. Course not in bad shape.
Played 18 last weekend on 8/20 and it was a real treat with the new champion Bermuda greens. The course is in the best shape I have ever seen it and I couldnt find any reason to complain. I will be back
Havent been here in a while. New Greens! excellent.....awesome staff. Ill be back.
$40 for no greens and fairways. Shame, because we were told by the club house attendent that the first 2 holes were the worst. But....they were the best all around. Stay away, Quaker Creek is less $$$ and better shape. Would have given 0 stars if possible.
Great course hiding in plain sight, decent greens fees, excellent layout without being too difficult to enjoy, easy to get to while still not subject to being in high traffic
The new greens are in good shape. They are really a great addition to this layout. Course is really worth playing!
Course always in great shape and a very fair price. A great buy!
Played it last summer a couple of times and could never finish, it was so slow. But it was at least in good shape. Was out there on June 10th this year and it was a dog patch. Virtually every green had major issues, some were completely un-puttable. Tee boxes were pretty bad too. The pro shop said it was due to winter damage. Possible, but I havent seen other courses in this kind of shape. I did get all the way around this time, but only because the word must be out that this place has fallen on hard times, so it was pretty dead, just like the course. Too bad, it was a great track with some fun holes.
I would love to give this course 5 stars, but its just not ready yet... Not having a range really brings me to want to throw a 3-3.5 stars right now. However knowing where this course was in the last 2 years They deserve a bump to a 4 -4.5 for the awesome work new management has done with the course !Pros :Greens - Absolutely needed Bermuda, the newly opened bermuda greens still have signs of needing some sand today and were a TOUCH long my liking, BUT 100% playableFairways - exceptionalTee boxes - Few blemishes here and there, but nothing to complain aboutLayout - It is called the Challenge for a reason, there are some tough approach and drives here . GREAT layout overall though!Staff - Super friendly !!!!Cons :Driving range - NONE :( (previous reviews state a new one is coming not sure how true that is)Greens - Few quirky humps and pin placements that one could argue unfairBunkers - THICK sand (almost like beach or heavy fill dirt), consistency of feel and amount of sand in the bunkers varies (again i do believe there are plans to re-do the bunkers here soonOverall this course is 100% springing back to life, worth the 45 minute drive from RTP... GO PLAY HERE, Support the course so they can continue to make it even better !!!!!!
Course had aerated recently so fairways a little rough, but greens and fairways should be in great shape this coming week.
Course was great. Pace was a little too slow.
Played The Challenge 2-3 months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it - it lived up to its name. We just played it again yesterday, however - and the course is a DISASTER. Bunkers are completely unplayable, greens are half grass, half sand, fairway grass height is approximately the same as the rough - even the water dispensers werent filled. Even at a reduced rate, its not worth playing until they do some MAJOR surgery on the course.
Ive been playing this course for 20 years since they opened it. I loved this place when it first opened but over the last few years there have been issues. This past Saturday was as bad as its been and that had little to do with the course itself. Upon arriving for our tee time after 3 pm on Saturday, I was told the rate was $40 to which I asked $40? Is there a twilight rate? I figured there would be considering its March and it was 3 pm. I was told $40 is our rate during winter rates. An hour before that, there were 3 different deals on GolfNow for $32 that disappeared in a matter of minutes. When a call was made to the course, the pro shop stated That rate isnt right so we took it down. The rate is $40. So did the rate change because the weather warmed up over the last couple of hours on that day? The next thing I know, the guy at the counter cut me off and said Do you want to play here or not? Im not sure which handbook or training class was used for the proper way to talk to any customer but it was the wrong one. It was bad enough that youre charging $40 at 3 pm on a Saturday afternoon in March but that one caught me off guard. The fairways are dormant and more miss than hit right now. The rate vanished from a website and then the guy in the pro shop wants to act like he works at Pinehurst #2 when someone who has played there since they opened the doors over 20 years ago asks about a twilight rate? I was part of a charity tournament for St. Judes that was played here for a few years and the course was so bad in 2016 that a gentleman was riding around giving us free rounds of golf because the course was in the type of shape that you would see at a driving range. The course seems to be on its way back but the level of service was awful. I hope for better in the future if and when that happens.
Great track. Needs spring warmth to get grass growing!!
Course was in great shape
After spending the summer on maintenance and new greens, the Challenge is in extraordinary shape for a daily fee course in early September 2017.
After down years, new management has restored its conditions in fine fashion
In the worst shape I have ever seen this course since its opening. Usually can count on beautiful greens, smooth full fairways, and nice tee boxes. Not this time. Greens were inconsistent at best, unputtable on about three at worst. Just shocked at the condition. Have enjoyed this course for years as it has lived up to its name. Not sure if the recent cold snap wrecked the greens but we are in mid April and this was very disappointing. Luckily we played with an internet discount, otherwise would have asked for a raincheck after playing the first couple of holes and returned after the course staff gets this mess in better shape. Sorry so harsh, but this is a shame to have a nice course get in this condition.
Course in good shape
Nice course going through some changes
The greens were hit hard by the winter. Nice layout, but putting was slow and rough.
My favorite course
Re-opened to members this weekend and public next weekend. New Bermuda greens and other improvements incredible!
Good golf course, much improved with new owner. Just one of the improvements is new golf carts.
In great shape right now.
Great course, great condition kicked my butt.
Good course but the greens are not currently in good shape. I believe they will redo greens May 2017.
The tee boxes were not in the greatest conditions. There were 10-20 hornets making nests in the greens on most of the holes. Makes you feel a little uneasy standing over a putt when you have these jokers in your ear and flying at you.
Great course with new Championship greens
Hard course, blind shots. Lots of water hazards. Greens right now not in top shape.
Great golf course and great service
Andrew and his guys are doing great things out here
Difficult Golf Course but fair. Bring your A game to play well.
Good golf
Good course. A little pricey but worth it
Nice course challenging not bad price either
Could use some repairs in some areas.
Nice course,great staff
The greens are in terrible shape.
New greens, great value
Tough course, greens could be a little better
Great breakfast
Great shape!
Great golf course for money
Greens rolling fast
New greens!
Too many drunk idiots slowing up the course and being belligerent.
