Amazingly beautiful place. A must see while I’m Gloucester! The architecture is strong and gorgeous. The views are spectacular. I’ve never seen anything like this before. So happy to be able to see this spectacular piece of history.$18 for adults and $10 for childrenTour lasts roughly an hour and a half. There is a gift shopBathrooms are very cleanThere is time to go out back and take pics and enjoy the breathtaking scenery
John Hammond was a very interesting man. The owner was just as interesting as the property. The castle has amazing views out of the windows too. Our tour guide was also great, her knowledge seemed to flow instead of feeling like a forced tour. The only thing that seemed disappointing is the gift shop. It seemed like mostly books for kids and dress up clothes.
Upon arrival, you are instantly met with iconic arches which offers a picturesque view of the grounds & sea. The exterior of Hammond Castle is very stunning & the interior is equally just as stunning. I honestly didn’t know much about the man himself, John Hammond Jr but came to learn about why he created this castle, the incredible artifacts he collected throughout his life, his inventions as well as his sense of humor. I would love to learn even more about his life after visiting this castle. Hammond Castle is quite remarkable and worth trip if you are visiting the area.
Extremely beautiful and fascinating history! A must see visit. You really feel like you are transported back in time. Worth the entrance fee (which includes a guided tour). Just respect the antiquities and leave it as you entered.
Not sure about the museum itself . The outside is where the real beauty is . Great picture taking spot. Got a whole bunch of nice shots. Very fairytale like. Great hidden spot. From there drive to rockport for lunch . And thats a Saturday for you
The museum staff are very nice and knowledgeable about the castle and Mr. Hammond. Even with COVID restrictions, the museum is worth a visit. Rachel, our guide, did an excellent job providing detailed information about the artifacts in the museum collection. If you are with older or younger visitors, there are stairs indoors and outdoors, as well as gravel walkways outside.
Absolutely beautiful. Tour guide was awesome and we were the last tour. So many different architectural eras in one castle. Hammond was a genius and maybe a TAD eccentric!! The weather was stormy so the waves were crashing around the shoreline making for great pictures outside.
This museum is still amazing to me. I have been coming here since I was a pre-teen. The grounds alone are so beautiful. Listening to the surf rolling in.
Amazing castle/museum with period pieces spanning the 1st through the 20th century. The view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, grounds, court yard and castle are beautiful
I cant wait to come back and spend more time here. Truly exceptional and an enjoyable history lesson. Like walking through time, multidimensional experience. Our tour guide John was awesome too, highly entertaining and informative.
We spent about 1 hour in the museum. It was beautiful. We were lucky that the weather was good and we could enjoy outdoor view. We learned a lot about his inventions.
Great tour, great castle. My inner child is so happy. 12/10 would definitely go again.
Awesome museum castle with many kinds of architecture and artifacts from all over the world! One of a kind place, its hard to explain, the castle is so unique. Great social distancing tours, many tour guides throughout to answer any questions, and some of the tour allows you to go look around on your own, which is nice because theres so much to see. Beautiful outside gardens and oceanfront land! You could spend hours here - look everywhere, there are artifacts & cool detail in every corner of the castle! Clean restrooms and gift shop, you can order tickets online, in advance, to reserve a tour.
Ive been here quite a few times throughout my life and each time feels like the first ! The castle and its stories always keep my imagination amped up.Ive never left without thinking - Wow !
What a lovely museum! So beautiful and full of history. The tour guide was so helpful & told us many cool facts about Hammonds castle that we would have never figured out on our own. The other staff who were working were also very pleasant as well! We enjoyed our visit so much!
The Lovecraft inspired evening was pleasantly creepy and elegant! Id have more photos but the Hammonds dont want this dark time in their lives recorded
Very fun place! Sounds like Hammond was a bit of a trickster and I think we would have gotten along quite well! Theres a lot to look at and some very beautiful flowers. The staff were incredibly nice and thoughtful towards Covid precautions
Unfortunately it was a cloudy day but still we had a great time enjoying view of the Atlantic shore line. We took several nice pictures. We explored many rooms of the castle with its medieval architecture and artifacts. Very interesting story behind the owner and he did seem very much ahead of his time as an inventor. Make sure you stop here when in the area.
The tour was great, and the guide was very knowledgeable. There was plenty of room to stay away from each other during covid times. If you like history and technology, this was a great intersection of wacky and interesting.
Fantastic experience! The tour guides were a wealth of knowledge on medieval history, the objects and architecture of the castle, and the personal life of John Hays Hammond Jr., its creator. Latin language enthusiasts will find an abundance of written Latin on the walls, door frames, window panes, books, and tombstones in the museum.Maureen in the gift shop was very helpful in my recent purchase.
Scenic castle along the coast. You can visit the outdoor areas without a ticket. Tickets get you into the museum.
Great tour! $14 adult and $10 for seniors. It was worth every penny. Our guide painted the perfect picture of John Hammond and the castle. I would definitely recommend and its completely worth the trip.
This place is wonderful. But if you are in a wheel chair or limited ability to walk, then you may have problems as stairs are windy narrow. Lots of artifacts gathered from hammonds family. Beautiful view of the ocean. During covid, you have to purchase ticket before going. 30 minute tour and 30 minutes to look on your own. Could easily spend hours in there.
I loved this place. Such history. All reclaimed stuff from all over the world
Small tour, but worth it. The views inside were beautiful.
Great time. Took the candle light tour. It was very nice.
Off rte127. Beautiful castle great tour
Lovely get away from the city, Great tour, staff were definitely knowledgeable about the castle. Very important dont forget to buy your tickets before hand.
Absolutely amazing! Great experience, staff was very informative but kept it lighthearted and fun. Will definitely be returning
Most Beautiful place I have ever seen...I will be visiting as much as possible...
We did one of their candlelight tours which was a fun experience. I went in thinking the whole place would be lit up solely by candles which would have been very cool. But in reality theres a lot of lighting during the tour. But it was still fun to be there at night and hear all about the Hammonds (and dodge a couple of bats that were flitting around). The tour leader did a nice job painting a picture of John Hammonds eccentricity. If I did it over again, Id just do the normal tour during the day so that there was more time to explore parts of the museum in more depth on your own. That would also leave more time to check out the beautiful view out to the ocean from the grounds.
Great place, loved the museum and the outdoors
A treat! Great tour, try to book ahead online. What a gem to see if youre in the area. Plenty of photographic spots, inside and outside the castle.
Admission fee of was very reasonable. You can have a self-guided tour or go with a guided tour. Very interesting artifacts from around the world on display and also some of Hammonds inventions and patents on display! Ocean view from the property is also very nice. Worth the trip in my opinion.
Fun, unexpected things to see and do. It really is a castle with a fascinating history. Do visit!
The museum is well run and they escort patrons around and explain why Hammond built the castle. I liked how strange and quircky Hammond was. Not my tastes in decor but fascinating place!
Really interesting place to visit. I would recommend checking it out.
Tour guide Katy was knowledgeable and explained many of unique features of the castle.. highly recommended to all
We had a wonderful time during our visit. If you come here make time for it so you dont have to rush. It is a great time if you are into history, architecture and medieval artifacts. If you are handicapped it may be challenging to walk through. I am handicapped but do not require a wheelchair. There is handicapped parking. We recommend it. Its a great tour.
Beautiful building, mixture of different architecture styles outside, inside is maison arrangement.
Lots of doors were closed or locked, but what we could view was pretty neat! Beautiful views too!
Wow amazing! Unfortunately it was closed but we were able to walk around with out getting kicked out. The castle is so grand and the details are exceptional. The views over the ocean is one of a kind. They even have their own little island.
Amazing place, loved the video!! Self guided or tour guide, whichever you prefer...loved the great hall and the setting is to die for
This place is awsome some good history but very beautiful sites and the guide was great
Spectacular medieval castle and medieval collection overlooking the ocean. John Hammond was second in patents only to Edison ans is the father of the remote control and guided missile technology. An enchanting and mysterious place not to be missed. It was also on Americas most haunted places. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful castle you wont be disappointed. It is also an event location for weddings, etc. The garden outside of the drawbridge and bell tower is a luscious, and shady place to take a rest while taking you back to a long ago time. Just gorgeous.
This has Roman artifacts mixed with mid-evil parts of buildings mixed throughout the whole place. The living areas with the details on all of the different inventions by Hammond is very interesting. Most of which are weapons of wars used during WW2. The guided tour is very short only consisting of one side of the outside and two rooms. This was under COVID19 restrictions which was all followed throughout the showing.
This place was amazing! We happened to go here after a cancelled whale watch just as something to do, but it’s completely fascinating and I would like to go back again. The staff was very helpful, the grounds were beyond gorgeous and the history in this place is a lot of fun to learn about. Plus the views, it’s set on a cliff over looking the ocean, it couldn’t get much more picturesque. This place is well worth the visit!!!!
Hammond castle, is a spectacular medieval castle its design is unique, with an incredible ocean view if you have not yet visited this castle you do not have to wait, and if you are looking for something new for your party it is one of the many places in the massachuset area who are waiting for your next event.
Beautiful place but you have to pay $300 to take photos there and the employee (an old lady) is very rude, she was there watching us like keeping an eye on us to make sure that we were not taking any photos. It was very embarrassing. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!
I have no clue what anyone has to complain about. This was a great stop. There is a ton of great history and architecture to take in, not to mention the incredible views. Make sure to follow the self guided tour in the pamphlet you receive. It will guide you through the maze of rooms and fill you in with great tid bits of information. My only suggestion to them would be to add small placards near many of the items to get a little more information about them.
I can only imagine how much fun it must have been living here or even visiting the castle when it in action. The owner seemed to have a very interesting sense of humor and a very interesting outlook on life. His family loved castles so the built one in the states then he copied his parents and built one near by. He built his castle using actual old pieces of items he found all over Europe from both older castles churches and whatever else he decided to add. Along with modern technology that he invented for himself. He even added a dungeon for his naughty guests.
Very beautiful and so Historic
Amazing tour and grounds! Definitely do not miss this place!
Interesting stop if you have the time to fill. Quirky odd attraction. Not as accessible as anticipated with challenging steps and floors. The top floor is closed to the public. Staff is wonderful.
Hammond castle museum is worth the stop if you’re in the area. An interesting man and an interesting piece of history. What you learn may surprise you! You can walk around the property on your own or you can pay to take the tour and see more of the castle.
This castle of an inventor is truly fascinating. He collected Medieval artifacts, many of which are integrated into the design of this home, and you can see parts of his laboratory. Take a tour if you can, they will tell you all about Hammonds pranks and somewhat flippant character. A fun and picturesque outing.
Beautiful, very interesting. Doesnt take all day to see it.
Was closed due to Covid but was able to walk around outside. From. what I was looked great. Will be back when they open!
A wonderful get away, beautiful location full of history and wonder. I also got engaged here so yeah Im a bit biased.
A pretty cool place, decent price for what you get, and is the same price for the guided and the self guided tour. A pretty interesting tour and I really like the place and the whole idea, but I felt the tour could be better and didn’t really review the entire castle. This is not an actual castle from the medieval times though.
I visited here with a group from our historical society and we all found it to be an amazing place. The details throughout are remarkable. There are so many interesting stories that are part of the history of the castle.
A good experience. Still undergoing some projects to open up more rooms to the public. So may have another trip down there in the future...
I love the Hammond Castle. Everytime I visit the castle there is something more to see that I missed my last visit.
Wait until COVID is over. I went like 10 min after they opened and they were already at capacity and didn’t have a system where you could wait for someone to leave so you can enter.
This place nothing short of amazing. Allow for at least an hour to see the and take in everything. Tours are self-guided @ $14 per adult.
Opened 2 more rooms to the public! Beautiful and historical
This place is amazing. Hammond was definitely a character.
Cool history and setting with a great collection of antiques and amazing features designed by Mr. Hammond himself.
Great architecture and artifacts.
Amazing staff. They were very accommodating yesterday to a personal request. Very, very kind, polite and understanding. I have visited once before during a candlelight tour which was enjoyable and came back to buy a birthday present. I had a very pleasant experience thanks to a gentleman who used to work there and a lady running the register. I apologize for not learning their names as retaining names is not my strong suit but very nice people, nice place to visit and well worth it.
An excellent experience. Wonderful to learn about mr. Hammond and his intriguing life. Highly recommend taking a guided tour.
The guy that built this castle was definitely a bit strange... And its evident in this castle. I took the self-tour as the your guide that day was sick. I enjoyed reading all the details and anecdotes posted around. The War Room and kitchen are closed currently for renovation, and you are unable to see his private residence because of a stipulation he made... Which makes me all the more curious of what it looks like up there....It took us almost 2 hours to go around. I recommend it!
Very interesting, cool place to visit.
During the tour we received a awesome reward by the museum curator filling in for a tour guide that called in. His knowledge was incredible regarding the facility and the family.
This place is a fairytale. The castle and the story behind it is mesmerizing. Love it and is worth more than 5 ☆☆☆☆☆
It was a nice visit. Should be something you should check out
Very, very cool! Go visit!! Really, go see this place.
Caught a couple nice photos at the entrance. Didnt get to see the inside.
Nice place to visit. Beautiful views from around the castle.
Today I will be able to go on the tour and I will report back. Yesterday Hammond Castle was closed so we will see about today.Im back to report on my visit to Hammond Castle. Hammond Castle is a beautiful place and has a lot of history inside of it. The price to get in was very reasonable I believe it was $12 to walk around the castle and see all the accomplishments of Mr Hammonds journey in his life. Plus how beautifully he lived. A beautiful placement of the castle on the ocean I could see how Mr Hammond would love waking up every day and looking out over breakfast and seeing such beauty. Im sorry to report that wheelchairs would have a hard time getting around the facility. You may want to call ahead of time
Beautiful historic castle on the ocean. It was closed so we did not get to go in. It was still cool to walk around outside.
Great historical site! Lots to see and knowledgeable guide!
A nice place for a day trip..
An interesting place to visit. Lots of stairs and walking so it may be difficult for some. I would recommend watching the video presentation before beginning the self guided tour. Be sure to get a brochure at the gift shop as it shows a good route through the castle and grounds. Friendly staff in the gift shop. It’s a beautiful coastal setting.
This is like a little treasure from the city. I recently gotten a new camera and was perfect in taking pictures!. I also notice you can have special events pictures (aka wedding) because of the spectacular views. 10/10 will go again!
Gorgeous views great tour
It was a fantastic experience and Debra was amazing. I was so grateful of her.
Great castle amazing views
Beautiful grounds! Really nice place to walk around on a nice spring or cool summer day:-)
We love the Hammond Castle. If you have not gone to take a tour, I highly recommend it. It is amazing for adults and children. This was my third time here. First time around the late 70’s then the the late 90’s and this past weekend with my son and his family and our niece. They really enjoyed it.It is an amazing east coast gem. The architecture, old items brought back from Europe used in decorating the castle and of course the ocean view. I want to give a special thanks to Deborah who “made our day” at our visit.Be sure to add the Hammond Castle to your list of places to see. It is worth your time!
Beautiful views, amazing castle, great inventor.
I didnt take the tour as it was closed but even closed I recommend if youre in the area, its stunning!!
Who would have thought this man of many inventions would build a medieval castle on the beautiful coast of Massachusetts. Great tour. Interesting to learn where a lot of the interior furnishings came from... monasteries in Europe from ages ago. Of course, this place was built during the 1920’s and he traveled a Europe looking for things to add to his “gift” to his new bride. Mr Hammond was quite extravagant and a bit strange as well. He did have a warped sense of humor, but that added to the intrigue of his home “castle.” Go see it, well worth the trip!
So beautiful
Amazing Game of Thrones experience!
Great place. Unfortunately the castle is presently closed
Beautiful castle with views. Excellent for photoshoot.
Such a wonderful place. The views, the artifacts and the history are amazing! We love taking the kids and they live it as well.
We went to the castle during October when it is transformed into a Haunted Castle. I thought the performers did a great job. There are a few good scares and most importantly nobody touches you. Since I am a Scaredy Cat I appreciated that no one grabs your leg or swings a chainsaw in your face. Great Job by the volunteers and worth the $15
