A hidden gem with just 28 sites with only E/W (though the host site has sewer). Park is off the beaten path, but it has a lot going for it. Lots of opportunity for trail walking. Wildlife does walk through your camp sites at night. Park was in the process of finishing a very nice elevated walkway through the marsh. No fire ring, but most sites we saw had a circle of stones. Sites were large and well-spaced with lots of shade. Given the proximity to water, you may have to fight off the flying no-seeums in the summer, but we didnt have an issue. While the park is wooded, the electrical box at each site as a light and there are light poles spaced throughout along the road. Opportunities to restock are available out in town but not much in the way of tourist stuff. Most of the campers we saw were in town for the Mullet Festival. The roads can be tight, but we saw several large 5th wheelers as well as 30-plus foot self-drives. The address given on the website did not take us to the park, but to a spot about 1/4 mile away. There is a very nice wood Park Office at the entrance that probably houses a store, but everything was closed. A small gate office further in is where you check in. By all appearances, the park is working to get things back to normal. We camped at Shepard State Park in a Travel Trailer.
My kids and I loved the park, we stopped in after a road trip to look around, rest and it is lovely. It is so peaceful. Are yall building a new boardwalk? My kids are excited about coming back to use the archery trail. We thought the campsites were charming, and the trails are good. Were coming back when the weather cools down a little more.
The park was clean and nice. Employees and guests were friendly and helpful. Great value for the price. Bathrooms were clean. We stayed on site 09 w/ our ‘34 ft. trailer, plenty of space. Close to Ocean Springs, Biloxi, and Dauphin Island, AL.
Shepard State Park is a very affordable campground and there are reasons for this. The RV sites are woodsy an not too close together. The place is peaceful and mostly quiet, except when there is a passing freight train on a nearby major East/West rail line. The campground restrooms were clean-ish and not in the best condition, tolerable for the price. There was warm shower water but not hot! The disc golf course seems well laid out and there is an archery course, as well. The hiking trails could use some trimming up and more trail markers. There really are not a lot of other activities to be had here, other than rough rock/sand road bicycling. We did meet some new friends here, so that is a plus. The camp hosts and office person were helpful and friendly.
Great place to camp. They still have primitive camping as well as RV sites and tent sites with electricity and water for those with children. Very nice people.
Awesome place! We ended up staying longer than we had planned even. Clean, nice sites, friendly staff.
I am familiar with the park then going for years but never checked out the camping I went today to look for a future spot for tent camping and it was absolutely beautiful very shaded and enough space in the RV area for tents. I love the whole look of the space provided. Not commercialized at all. It keeps the integrity of nature intact around you
Very nice campsites. Seclusion isolation QuietMother nature is perfect in all her Beauty & Majesty...
Peaceful and sprawling; this park is exactly what someone like me is looking for. Im camping on a huge site, nestled in a wooded lot and surrounded by nature. The big comfort station is not too far away, and its old, but its clean. Exotic (to me) bird calls are intermittently scattered in different directions around me. I think I hear a hawk. Ive spent the morning spotting and taking pictures of plants ands trees to be identified. Light traffic noise in the distance is the only reminder of what lies outside of the park- Well, almost perfect anyway.
My husband, 2 kids, father-in-law, and friend came to stay for 2 nights. This place is clean!! The bathroom and showers are awesome; air conditioned, clean, and has toilet paper!! Not crowded at all! Close to everything without feeling like im in the city.JJ is an excellent park ranger!! He cams out and fixed our electric box when we couldnt figure out how to work it. He has been very helpful and cheerful. A great source of information, and he caught a baby gator that was in the campground to relocate it safely. We are enjoying out camping trip and want to come back again.
Great place to walk enjoy nature great dog park really nice lady in front with lotsa information about the park, great picnic areas
Facilities are barely kept. No maps available for late (after 5pm) arrival. Roads are not clearly marked. And why would you put up Frisbee golf all around a primative camping area?
What a lovely place to camp. So peaceful and beautiful. Our spot was spacious and felt secluded with all the greenery surrounding us. Everyone was super nice. Highly recommend and will return.
Compared to other state campgrounds, this one is smaller at 400 acres and 28 power/water hookup sites. But, it is very quiet with great, isolated sites around the outside and all sites a pretty easy walk to the centrally located restrooms/showers. Fire ring, grill and picnic table in each site. Perfect for getting away. There are also a good number of primitive sites with their own restrooms/showers. Definitely recommend.
Nice little hidden gem
The price was right at $18 per night for camping but the park is very rustic. The campsites have a good distance between them but many of them are not very level. The bathrooms are in desperate need of repair. There are a lot of hiking trails but they dont really lead to any great vistas.
Beautiful park! Host/Ranger was awesome, very welcoming. We got in late but they have an honor box at the gate. Well maintained spaces, trails, plenty of wildlife. Good stop!
Campground does NOT have sewage hookups, and we were told by a worker that they did. So heads up guys!
Lovely park, great location
Took my puppy to the park for training. Shepards State Park was well clean, well maintained, and peaceful! I highly recommend this park
Was trying to get my disability fishing license, but they dont sell them. The woman at the gate told me to try on line.
Love this place.
Very quiet and enjoyable campground and park. Like any other treed park be wary of ticks. My dogs got a few.
We had a great time thanks
Enjoying a day of fishing
Totally serineLovely atmosphere to romance at in middle of the drizzling night
Not enough hiking but plenty of other things to do. Camping was quiet with big spaces.
Very quiet and peaceful.
A fun little park with easy shot walking trails. A great spot to camp if you just want a quick getaway
This is a great place to explore the outdoors. When you think about a deep forest environment with swamp land on each side, this is definitely the place.
The sites are not very level and amenities are dated, but everything is clean and tidy. This is also a very quiet park and the cheapest we have stayed in for quite some time. Sites are well spaced and reasonably private. We enjoyed our time here very much.
2nd half of disc golf course needs better marking. Better upkeep of the course. trails are nice, pet friendly n nice chill spots
The Disc Golf Course is one of the best Ive ever been on! Quite challenging and very fun !!! Will definitely be recommending to all my friends !!!!
Loved this park. Lots of amenities, very clean.
Private sites in a beautiful woodsie setting.
We stayed here a couple nights on our way from Florida to Texas. The price is great, the sites were nice and large. We have a 36ft 5th wheel and had no problem. There was a nice dog park, disk golf and a really nice competition archery course. I would stay here again.
Clean, well kept grounds and secluded camping areas.I particularly like the fenced in dog area, where I am able to let my dog run loose. And the archery targets are a nice addition, not far from the dog yard.
Great place to play disc golf! Challenging with lots of variety. Friendly staff and the place is well taken care of.
Awesome hidden gem... Scenic camping, hiking, and archery park situated amidst the bayous of Gautier ms. 395 acres dedicated to outdoor activity and family fun. Loved it !!!
Friendly helpful staff, but park is in need of a lot of maintenance and updating.Sites are fairly private.
All I can say is its a fun place.
Great spot to cast a line. Would have been even better if it didnt pour down rain. Lol
I enjoyed my stay here, quiet, nice shower facilities, pretty grounds, private camping areas. Great park :).
Wonderful disc golf park maintained by the city and South MS Disc Golf Organization. Primitive camping and RV sites are maintained. 2 sets of bathrooms- the RV site bathrooms are air conditioned. The primitive site bathrooms were recently vandalized but will be up and running again soon. Wonderful customer service and the new park ranger ROCKS!
Older park but the host keeps it clean and friendly. The state is working on improvements slowly but surely. I will stay here again when I am back thru
Beware! People living in the park. Made a reservation online, drove through While in the area to check it out a week before we had reserved to stay. Individuals had several campers on center blocks, lots of trash, tarps on roofs. Air units hanging out of windows. These folks are camping right next to the bathrooms. I wanted to cancel because just wasn’t what we thought and I have children to consider who were uncomfortable when they too saw this. We are avid campers. Camp at many state parks all over the south. This place refused to give me my money back even after a call to the city. City parks and recreation was rude. And this was 1 week before our check in date. Would only give half of weekend in refund. Guess my donation to the state. Poor customer service. Shame on the city for allowing such a nice park to be ran this way. Shame on them for not doing a better job conducting business better. I will never return to Gautier. Wish I had pictures but it’s too far out there to go back for that.
I enjoyed it very much. Two friends and I went tent camping for two days. The park is very beautiful to me; live oaks, wetlands, full of hiking trails. Had some pleasurable encounters with wildlife. Ill definately be back.Do bring a tent pad unless you are primitive camping as the sites are leveled with gravel so the RV campers wont get stuck.Lots to do and see and the park is near the ocean and close to Pascagoula, so you are only 5 or 10 minutes from restaurants, gas stations and grocery.
Great park off the beaten path low prices great trails
This was the most awful camping experience that I have ever had. I stayed in the Primitive camping last night and I felt like I was being watched all night long. My tent was the only one I seen and I had the area to myself but I me and my co camper were tense the whole time and at 3AM we started packing up so we could get home and get some rest. Its just a creepy place that I dont ever want to stay at again.
I enjoyed myself
Lots of trails to explore!!
Beautiful campground. Quiet, peaceful and private campsites. Bathhouse needs updating which is on their agenda. Hot showers and clean.
Very nice park, very quiet, love staying here
Great park even though it is pretty small. Facilities are okay in terms of bath houses needing a little love. There is no interpretive center and really no interpretive exhibits to speak of. Someone in the administration invested heavily in an archery range and a nice disc golf course. There are primitive campgrounds with no bathroom facilities and an RV campgrounds that does have some facilities. There is also a small boat ramp appropriate for
I always love Shepard state park. Its relaxing, feels safe. Maintenanced trails makes it fun for a well shaded walk
Beautiful nice place well organized nice park to go to go
Nice quiet park. Spacious sites.
Its just a great place to visit. Clean and open to the public
Very well priced primitive camping ($13), dry sites despite the rain, quiet, plenty of picnic tables. Very nice spot!
Nice campsites, with water, electric, facilities for bath house were dated. Staff are friendly.
Nice cheap camping stop over for a day or two. Trails frisbee golf and picnic area. Several pull through sites with water and electric.
Great park for being a new park. They are working really hard and it shows.
Nice trails! Good camping spots too! They have a dog park as well.
This is a sketchy, unsafe, and anti-social State park operated by the City of Gautier. I had never seen a police car patrol a state park before I stayed there, for only one night. People live at this park, and some of them are from out of state, I am guessing that the police were monitoring them. The park host is unavailable and closes himself inside a horse trailer. I was stalked by a City Worker of the City of Gautier from the time I pulled in, including when was trying to set up my tent, and then again, by the same man in the morning. Needless to say, I was too scared to set up my tent, the man followed me in a golf car from 5pm onwards. Therefore, I spent the night in my car with the doors locked. At 10pm, a truck spraying a mysterious substance came around with a bullhorn and broke the silence continually. It was very strange, and then worrying, as I did not know what the substance was that the truck emitted in large quantitities. The bathrooms have no plugs, you cannot even charge your phone. The disc golf players made problems about the location of my parked car, after the attendant at the front desk had told me to park there. Overall, a very unfriendly, scary place. This is not a campground for women traveling alone.Answer> Please do not try to insult my intelligence by telling me that a City of Gautier gardner & maintenance worker is a ranger or a law enforcement officer. Furthermore, there is absolutely no excuse to have a City of Gautier worker follow a female visit or on his golf course for three hours straight and then the next morning as well. In regards to the mosquito spray, for those of us who are highly allergic, like myself, the Park should be obligated by law to post at the entrance the substance it is spraying. Finally, anyone who puts plants, flowers and lawn decorations in masse in front of their RV is not a visitor. The camp hose should be accessible as well. Glad that MS is just a pin on the map, I wont need to camp at Gautier again.
Great disc golf course. Sometimes I get a little spooked if out there too late because it is isolated but I take my own 911. Women should have a plan to protect themselves there.
My first Mississippi State Park. Small but nice enough park. Large sites with water and electric hook up. Archery range, disk golf, dog park, water access, and more.Update: The people that live across the water from the campground have dogs that bark randomly day and night.
They still doing some work. But it was clean, quiet, and huge. You can pinic or do archery; walk the nature trails. Dog friendly for sure.
Inexpensive and plenty of space in the site we had, neighbors are close but not on top of you, will definitely be back
Nice quiet getaway.
Peaceful and room to move.. neighbors are 50 / 100 yards away.. and not expensive.. best one we liked so far.. (out of 10 other camp sites..)
Very nice quite park to come andsit and relax. Love this park!!!
Really great choice for the family. We only hiked around on this trip, but it is a great camp site also. Stores are nearby if necessary. It has gorgeous water views, but no swimming. If you like frisbee golf or archery, there are great set ups for both.
The place was not that great. There was no place for camping we could find, and everything was flooded. We had to settle into an RV spot instead. The only decent part was the bathrooms, which were air conditioned.
$10 a night is way to expensive. Thats over $300 a month if you stayed every night. Thats almost as much as renting if youre just in a tent. What the hell is the state doing with this money.
Old style family campground. Well kept, quiet.
Lots of room, very relaxing!
Its a nice place for outdoor fun and they have a swimming pool
Good shady spots, quiet environment, decent shower house.
To be a state park I was excited to visit it. It had nature trails and picnic areas. A large bathhouse was on site but not crowded. Very attainable.
I loved playing there as a child, I am hoping my pups will add well
Great disc golf community and course
The first time that my husband and I stayed here I would have given them a four out of five because the bathrooms were funky but this go around they were nice and clean! This is our second time staying here and we love it! It is far out but not to far and there is plenty to do at the park itself. Great frisbee golf course and our pups love the dog park area. Will definitely be coming again and again.
Park is on low ground, so prepare for mud and bugs after heavy rain. Maintenance was a little spotty in 2017 but now appears to be on the upswing. Extensive hiking trails, with disc golf, archery, boat launch, RV camping and more. I recommend the Oscar Trail for best hike.
Very nice and quite and lots to do
Bath House needs work
Very relaxing and super friendly people
My wife and I planned a trip to the park for a chance to try out the new archery range. Unusual arrangement of targets with 28 lanes that are about 40 yards apart much like a bowling alley but the shots range from 15 to 80 yards. The lanes are separated by trees and thick ground cover with nice walkways, benches, and bow racks. Each bagged target has defined scoring rings and are securely mounted under a permanent awning. Although the cost was only 3 bucks, it appeared to have very little use. We went on a Saturday and had the range to ourselves. Try it out, you wont be disappointed!
Nice park with privacy between RV sites.
Cozy
Great 21 hole disc golf course and 9 home pitch n putt maintained by South Mississippi Disc Golf
Beautiful, good prices.
Love it! My dogs love running the trails! They also seem to have a great disc golf course there and archery target practice spots
