I went to the Rising Sun Tavern on 9/15/2019; I live locally and wanted to check out the history. I loved the building and the setting, the period pieces were amazing and the creaky floorboards just added to the ambiance. The two tour guides working on this day were both extremely knowledgeable and I was impressed to see a young man with such information.I purchased my heritage passes here and asked casually if I could take pictures; I was politely told that I could take as many as I wanted of the grounds but none of the interior. I completely understood and politely put my camera away and enjoyed the remainder of my tour. While in the middle of my tour a couple came in and made a donation; at this point I was with my young guide in the front of the tavern. I turned to see if the visiting couple would be joining the tour only to find that the other guide was allowing them to take photographs on their cell phones of each area of the tavern. I was a bit put off by this and glanced at the other guide...only to met with raised eyebrows. To the owner...the Rising Sun Tavern is a wealth of history for our area and I am grateful that you have taken the time to preserve it and allow the public to visit. I also understand the reasoning behind not allowing photographs of the interior, a policy that I observed and adhered to as instructed. It dismays me, however, that your guides show favoritism to those that can make a donation and then allow them to stroll throughout the property in full view of other patrons snapping photographs that others are prohibited from. In the future, please apply your photographing rules to all your patrons, not just those that can make a donation outside of the purchase of passes and items.

A wonderful tour! Our guide brought history to life as she explained what the accommodations, food, and local customs were like in a colonial tavern. Of particular interest was the origin of various sayings like double fisted drinker. Not to be missed!

Wife and I did a day trip in Fredericksburg and stopped by. Really enjoyed the tour, the guides were dressed in clothing from the era and were extremely knowledgeable of the tavern as well as other historic events in the area. Make sure to stop by if you are in town, cool piece of history.

This is a great museum! I originally considered skipping it for lack of time but I’m glad I didn’t. One particular tour guide (don’t remember her name) was very enthusiastic and knowledgable, treating us like real guests at a tavern. I enjoyed learning about how taverns operated in the 1700s and how women and men led very different lives in the same building. I would definitely recommend visiting this museum.

Built by Charles Washington (younger brother of George Washington) in 1760 as his home. Later SOLD, and operated as a tavern in 1792. Today the Rising Sun entertains visitors with a lively and thorough interpretation of 18th century tavern life.

Incredible. We are so lucky to have all of this history still preserved and so loved in the city. Fascinating social history presentation, wonderfully presented and with Passion for a very small fee. If youre like me and having been since you were young go again and expect to go often.

I Googled fun things to do in Fredericksburg, and this was one of the top items to pop up. It was a nice little afternoon adventure. It is a small place, but the hostesses know a great deal of history and are very sweet. Several great stories, interesting facts, and you learn quite a bit on where several phrases we still use today came from.

Would absolutely recommend taking a tour of this historic tavern. On street parking is limited. There are free parking lots around Fredericksburg. Park in one and walk a few blocks. No public bathroom. Closest one is at public library a block away. Best buy is a pass that will get you 3 tours all within a few blocks of each other.

RISING SUN TAVERN - Home of Charles Washington, brother to George Washington, converted to a tavern AFTER : ) his mothers death. Just a few blocks from Mary Washingtons house. A neat place to go at Christmas time, warmly decorated and attended by ladies in Colonial dress serving cookies of the period and hot spiced cider (good on a cold winter night).

Visited it once and one day hope to visit it again. Got a wonderful tour from a guide who treated me and my mom like we were visitors in the 18th century. He explained how the tavern operated, prices, services, how people who (in some cases could not do simple math) kept track of their drinks, postal service, what was available at the time in room and board. Want a bath? River is just down the street. Best guided historical tour I have EVER had. But that was many years ago and I am not sure what is available right now. Still, a lovely building with a LOT of history and a good site to see along side the Battlefield.

Continuing on the occasional trips to historic sites in the Washington DC area and not too far beyond, we drove to Frederick and went to the Rising Sun Tavern. What an interesting site. The tour was great and our guide really brought to life what it was like to live in the 18th century and, even more interestingly, what it was like to travel in the 18th century.I am really glad that I live in an age where there are more amenities when you travel. Nonetheless, I loved stepping back in time and imagining what it would have been like to be living at the time of the American Revolution.Definitely one of the more interesting historical sites that I have been to. I recommend going! The guided tour was fantastic.
