GPS takes you to the first stop, point 1 on the tour, Best Farm. The grounds were well tended, which made for easy exploration. The visitor center is closed, due to covid-19. The website provides downloadable audio. Signage, to direct to the other points on the walking tour would be helpful. The only sign we saw clearly posted, was to avoid the train track. We were concerned about trespassing while exploring other areas, due to lack of signs. The Union was able to hold the Confederates at a key battle here, allowing time for the Union army to put troops in place to protect Washington DC.Many lives were lost, on both sides, and its humbling to stand on the ground where such sacrifice was made.

Have always wanted to stop off here. Its a lovely but modest place. Very peaceful and quiet. Had an impromptu picnic. A little bit of local history. I like that it was not commercialized. Unique. Its like the family was away that lived here. Would be super nice if the house could be entered. Seems they are working on that. I will go back.

As far as national battlefields go, I found myself sorely disappointed. I couldnt get a good context of what was going on. It is developed heavily around the site, and there is much modernization everywhere. Maybe it was the day I went, where the smoke from Western wildfires was dropping a gloom, but I think that should have added a layer. I would go back and give it second chance.

I went here knowing the visitor center was closed because of Covid-19. I knew little about this particular battle. It was a little tricky to get around but with the help of Google maps I found my way. Not knowing much about the battle wasnt an issue because theres so many billboards explaining the battle that was more than enough information to understand the battle.

Five stars for the battlefield and negative five stars for the staff. I found it to be a beautiful battlefield and certain stops make you feel like its still 1860s. The museum is nice and they have a small gift shop that has all of your civil war memorabilia. Its a must see if youre a Civil War buff.

From Joseph Judge, The men who died at the Monocacy saved the Union. That has always been the significance of the battle -- the genuine significance of a truly terrible battle. This ground is lightly visited, little known, and under-appreciated. On July 9, 1864 Union General Lew Wallace (Ben Hur and Billy the Kid fame) cobbled together a small army and bitterly contested this Frederick battleground against overwhelming numbers.Go see it.

Called The Battle that Saved Washington, this is one of the more pivotal battles of the Civil War, but not widely known or acknowledged to the level it should be since it was a much smaller by comparison. The visitor center is fairly new and has a great museum upstairs that provides plenty of strategic context as well as the battle itself. Theres a 3D terrain model map that lights up and walks the viewer through the lead up to the battle and the battle itself. Theres even a medal of honor on display, but not for much longer since it is on loan from the recipients home state of Vermont. Absolutely stop by to see this before exploring the battlefield. There are a few trails to walk or run for those interested, but most of it is drivable as well. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Absolutely recommend a visit here!

I did enjoy this place. However I did not really get to explore the grounds as it was really cold. I did really like the visitor center though. The displays were good and the rangers were nice! I would recommend this place to others but I probably would not come back even though I enjoyed myself. I personally would rather go to a site that has really nice hiking and scenery.

This is a gem of a Civil War battlefield. It’s almost unknown to the general public, which makes it not too crowded, despite the monumental importance of being where the Union army delayed the confederates in their quest to invade the capital. Despite a tactical loss for the Union, this was a strategic victory as it allowed time for reinforcements to reach Washington and prevent a confederate takeover and perhaps a kidnapping of Lincoln. Visiting here is marvelous. You can walk where the grays forded the Monocacy River, and enjoy many other scenic parts of this bloody battlefield/farmland. When I’ve visited there is hardly a soul there to mar the enjoyment of the place.

Great place for some history and a nice little hike. Stop at the visitor center and check out the second floor museum for a quick overview of the battle. Also a nice view. Was there on a warm day after a bunch of rain. Did the Worthington Farm trials. The Ford Loop trail went along the river and the Rangers advice to use some bug spray was spot on. The mosquitoes would have been unbearable without it. The Brooks Hill trail gets steep and has a nice view of farm land at the top of the hill.Spring to fall they have a 11am ranger talk on the battle that was worth catching.

Make sure you go to the visitor center first! (Maps sent us to the 1st tour stop, which was confusing). This park is the site of a battle which delayed the confederates from marching on Washington - so that grant could bring the troops in to defend the Capitol. The second floor of the visitor center has the story with pictures, firsthand accounts, and a wealth of information for its size. The walking tours are self directed and well marked, and you can easily spend most of a day hiking and enjoying this piece of history.Everything is marked, and there is a free map in the visitors center. The park rangers are knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. The visitors center has handicapped access and an elevator to the second floor. (I took the steps). The first floor also has a gift shop.

Monocacy Battlefield is probably one of the most overlooked sights to see in Frederick. Well worth a visit, the museum itself is located right on historic Rt. 355, which has been in use since around 1750s, originally an Indian trail. There are several other sights to see, including the Best Farm and Worthington house which all played major roles during the battle.

One of the best Visitor Centers with wonderful, informative exhibits and friendly staff. The kids corner has been updated to include coloring pages, period clothing, books, and trains. There are multiple hikes, including Thomas Farm, Gambrill Mill, and the newest, Junction. The latter is our least favorite, with few shady spots and little to see. The other two offer more shade, with access to and views of the river. One of the best times to visit is Memorial Day weekend, where the flag installation dominates as you approach the Visitor Center. I have driven past the main entrance to this park with the small visitors center since the mid-1970s and thought that it was just a tiny historical site that commemorated some long forgotten event of the Civil War.Then I finally decided to explore the entire park about a decade ago and discovered just how wrong I was.THIS is a hidden gem that few people realize even exists, in part because it has two major traffic routes cutting through the sprawling grounds, as well as a railroad and a river. Combine all of that with the fact that crops and cattle are raised in certain areas, and I hope that I can be forgiven for thinking that the small area around the visitors center was the only thing of interest. The Civil War connection is very real and chilling when you finally read about it; I was vaguely familiar with the events depicted, but was absolutely stunned to learn that they occurred HERE.However, what keeps bringing me back several times every year is the physical beauty of the park and being able to observe the changing of the seasons within the grounds that it covers. This park has the earliest blooming snowdrops in the area that I know of, and the largest display of Virginia bluebells that I have been able to locate in the Maryland section of the DC region. There are many lengthy foot paths to explore, with varying degrees of difficulty, and tons of wonderful things to experience as a nature lover.Be sure to bring a camera.Highly recommended.
