I have walked this trail on many different occasions in different seasons. We have also taken a walk on this trail on a rainy day with no umbrellas (didnt expect rain) and the tree cover was delightfully helpful. This trail is very easy to walk, but watch for signs along the creek that warn to stay clear. Parts of the reserve was an old town that you can still see remnants of here. Its a bit of a drive out to get here, but it is absolutely breathtaking and an amazing place to find old-growth redwoods.

Hiked the Elk River Trail and it was the most amazing, quiet, and serene hike Ive ever been on. It made Redwoods National Park seem busy and touristy.

Worth the short drive out of Mendocino to spend time in this very quiet respite amongst the groves of California Coast Redwoods. I visited during the late Fall, encountering just a couple of other visitors enjoying the trails. I imagine it to be much more crowded during periods when the private cabins, adjacent to the park boundaries, are occupied during warmer weather.

Beautiful walking tour. Lots of history. We were on an Ed-Venture, with a 5- year- old. The only down side was that it was not as well marked as the other Ed- Ventures were. Still, a well- maintained walk with mostly paved and some dirt out gravel paths.

I didnt hike all the way into the Grove, but the trail was gorgeous with the new growth of spring, which should last through the summer. The trail is nice and wide, and wheelchair accessible as far as I went. It is a very nice place to hike before the crowds come.

Great place to hike! It is a 5 mile trek in with a loop at the end and a 5 mile walk back out. The first mile is paved and there are nice resting spots along the 4 miles in, the last mile is pretty steep but definitely worth it. Dogs are allowed off leash, but only for the first two miles.

Salmon Pass Trail (Fortuna): Relaxing easy-moderate hike guided by knowlegeable BLM docent, pointing out wildlife and flora, giving historical background and perspective. Some steep areas, switchbacks, but overall no too difficult incline. Single-file trail goes through one of the remaining old-growth redwood stands in the US. NOTE: requires reservations, no dogs; be prepared for 4-4.5 hrs (depends on number of hikers, speed/agility of participants, number of questions)

Clean and well managed. When conditions are dangerous, i.e. raining causes the trail to slide down the mountain, or flooding is currently blocking off the entire road out there, there are always signs and people working to make the trail safe again.

People are NOT banned from this forest.. ive no idea what that comment stems from but it is completely untrue. mayve you came upon the gate that gets closed? idk but in FACT its the opposite we encourage people especially locals to experience this place to get a look at the lives the incredibly tough men and women worked and lived in to put this beautiful town on the map.about 2 miles in headwaters lies a small ghost town of a past milling and timber production area known as Falk with several foundations of English style redwood homes and industrial buildings some aproaching 150 years of age.the small camp really was used to house workers and then was left to rot for many years until enough time passed and we wanted to preserve what was left as it slowly morphed from old run down houses to cherished cultural site. you will also notice indications of the extensive logging of the area it was all redwood initially and most of the plante and trees you see now were planted afterwards to help the ecosystem back to its feet. youll see many large redwood stumps with rectangular holes in them. these are called screw holes they were installed on the fly by the Sawyers in order to secure a springboard essentially a 2x4 shoved into the wood to serve as a temporary platform to continue de-limbing of the monstorous old growth coastal redwoods. its very pretty and serene peaceful and quiet out there a small stream slowly trickles away alongside you for some of the hike. the historical significance is very important to us Eurekans its a snapshot of the strong people who carved their path and left their mark on this rugged area with nothing but the American Dream eventually establishing VERY wealthy lumber companies many of which still stand and operate today.needless to say this spot holds a VERY special place in the locals hearts of locals therefore we expect visitors to treat it accordingly as would be expected of any other historically significant places.
