Nice collection of Florida Highwaymen art as well as AE Backus. Very informative explanation of Backus artistic progression over time.
Great museum celebrating a Fort Pierce painter, Beanie Backus. Fun stop. Beautiful paintings on display. They also have annual bazaars where great items are on special sale with proceeds going to the museum. Great stop on waterfront near good restaurants.
Original art by Beanie Backus and The Highwaymen the men he taught to paint. Whom sold their works, many in homemade wooden frames, up and down US Highway 1, thus receiving the name Hifhwaymen.View what The Treasure Coasts landscapes and sea acapes looked like to the artists. The musuem is quiet, clean, small enough to visit in an hour or large enough to enjoy art for a lifetime.A MUST DO visit in St Lucie County.Plus located directly on the Indian River next door to the Manatee Center ($2.00 entrance fee) and the the Chamber of Conference, there is plenty to see including the river and the boats.
Best place to view paintings and learn the history of A.E. Backus. Unfortunately, not a lot of Highwaymen art, but enough to get a sense of who they were. A very informative video of how Backus influenced their style and their lives. Wish there were more interviews with the Highwaymen, though.
I needed assistance with artwork left to me from my family in a will. This was the only place that was willing to speak with me and gave me valuable information, they were kind and so informative. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great piece of artwork. And thank you again.
The Bacus artwork was very good. It inspired me to go back home and get painting more highwayman scenes. I am self taught. We all find other things to take up our time instead of creating art. I love to paint Florida scenery like they had on display. I love to paint when I feel inspired by a sunset, etc. ...
Great show right now...Best if the best... on til the 15th. Check it out...a small gallery exhibiting big talent!
This is a beautiful Art Gallery, and an absolute gem in Fort Pierce. I highly recommend you visit if you havent done so already.
Charming. Small but well done. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I visited once on a friends recommendation, ans have been back twice since. Backus work is simply beautiful, and the history behind his life and artwork is fascinating. This should be a compulsory visit for every Floridian.
Wonderful exhibit of a Florida artist capturing the state on canvas.
I didnt actual get to go inside because we were in front and to the side of the Museum attending the Firefighter combat Challenge! However, I did get to see the beautiful art around the outside! It has an outstanding view of the Indian River and the bridge going over the river to Hutchinson Island! Next time I go to downtown Ft. Pierce I definitely want to go inside.
My daughter and I went in and started to look around, we sat down watching a video this women can up to us and started to embarrassed us as to how we got in there. There is not a sign saying you have to pay to go in....
This museum is well laid out. The history on Backus and the Highwaymen is well presented and accompanied by photos. The permanent collection is outstanding. The only drawback to my visit was the annoyingly loud jazz music that was playing through the stereo system. When viewing art it is more pleasant to do so in silence than with overbearing music.
Gorgeous paintings beautiful artwork its worth a go see
The gallery was ok but the lady working there was borderline rude.
Absolutely wonderful art collection - works by Backus and the original Highwaymen - true Florida art treasures - in the permanent collection along with special artist exhibits and a wonderful gift shop including art prints, books, jewelry and more.
We enjoyed this Museum and the works they have on display, lots of educational information and beautiful works to see. This is certainly a place worth checking out when you are in the area and have some free time to walk around. Enjoy
A great local treasure!
A great collection of Highwaymen paintings and works along with the life history of A. E. Backus. I really enjoyed learning about this great artist who was the mentor for the Highwaymen painters. It was interesting to see how our area in Fort Pierce and Saint Lucie County has changed over the years through his depictions.
Hard to beat their exhibits, the original Backus Nd Highwaymen paintings and special exhibits are Florida at its best. Convenient to other sights and good waterfront dining.
A very nice museum, with both Backus and Highwaymen paintings.
Loved it. Great museum.
I love it, story about one of the firt in the Treasure Coast
A.E.Backus grew up in Ft. Pierce with exposure to the St. Lucie river. He is one of the Artist Fl. Hall of Fame. He is also the teacher of the original Florida Highwaymen. An additional section has lesser known creations in varied media of Salvador Dali.
