The house tour was very interesting and our tour guide was very sweet and gave a great tour. After our tour we met John in the garden on the way out and he has so much knowledge about the house and Fort Lauderdale in general! He maintains the house and knew some of the family that lived there! We told him he should write a book... such an amazing guy!
Surround by a sea of modernism, a piece of historic Florida lives. It is a diamond in Ft. Lauderdale
The history of Ft. Lauderdale is well preserved at this site. A sense of pride every time I pass this location.
First time going to the stranahan House whats funny is Ive gone out on the paddle wheel boat that must be two blocks away but never walk the two blocks to see the stranahan House I felt like I was at home it had a warm comforting feeling inside and all made with Florida pine in my heart Im a beaver I love old wood and this place is gorgeous wood its not a big place the tour people were extremely helpful why I rattled on about different places thanks for making my day
Enjoyed visiting this historical site, however our guide mentioned that not only did the lady of the house have a big personality she also had a big mouth ...I found that odd to be saying this as did the other people on the tour with me, it was not forthcoming to say something of that nature for such a strong independent pioneer of society. Anyways the house is beautiful, it does have some original furnishings. It cost 12 dollars for entry.
My wifes company did their Holiday gathering at this really beautiful, historic venue. It was very nice to read the history behind this historic house and it being the oldest house in Broward County. We really enjoyed it there. The staff was helpful and friendly.
It was a nice your with lots of History I wish wed gotten the same tour guide that a lady and her husband had told us about..and that they gave her a tour and told her about the ghosts in the house and stuff like that my kids would have loved that.. the guy we got said they only do that on Halloween were not from here so of course were not going to be here on Halloween and then we ran into a guy who actually new mrs. Stranahan before she passed and he told us some informationhe was very interesting to listen to and showed us the old Bell that you had to Ring to get the ferry across the river its worth a stop to get the history unless you have a lot of kids that dont want to do that LOL.. what surprises me is that Fort Lauderdale really isnt that old and the people that were around at the beginning have only just passed away in the last few years really.
This place is a hidden treasure. I would highly recommend having any type of event here or even just popping by for a tour to better understand old Fort Lauderdale. A very unique, and historical home that shows and explains a lot of history of Fort Lauderdale. We had the pleasure of having my wedding reception at Stranahan House. It was beautiful, unique and truly perfect for my husband and I. Being born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, I loved that it was the oldest house in Broward county. We loved the elegance, historical details throughout the property. During our wedding, they left the home to tour during the first hour. It was great to be able to have that for our guests. This home is a beautiful blank canvas that can be designed into any type of atmosphere for your event.Lindsey, the event manager was very sweet and easy to work with. She was super accommodating to everything that we had come up with and made everything possible for us. The venue not only having the house and the surrounded area but also the massive courtyard next to it accommodating up to 200 guests.
We had such an informational tour of this lovely home. Thank you for keeping this going. You all do a great job. Such Dedication.
Truly enjoyed the tour of the house, learned so much about the history of Fort Lauderdale and Stranahan family. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to John who met us at the gate and gave us the best introduction to the place while we were waiting for our tour to start. A real treasure for history-loving visitors.
So worth the $12.Pro Tip: Great place to take friends and family if you live here and they are visiting.
If you like the history of an area, this is a place to learn some of it. With a guided tour of this well preserved building you will learn about what Fort Lauderdale was like many years ago. Check the scheduled times for the tours.
A great place to visit, guided tour are available, really nice staff..
One of the best historic sites in south Florida! A must see. Tours start at 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm.
Great to learn the history of the Stranahan House. Thank you Wilson for the great tour!
Great tour of an original home built on River in Fort Lauderdale.
Nice staff and nice place to bring family and friends but they dont want the place noisy.
Small little house where one of the first settlers of Fort Lauderdale lived with his wife. Tragic little story. Beautiful grounds with large Royal Palms and lots of Dade Pine woodwork .
The other reviews have said it well. If you are interested in the history of Ft Lauderdale and a lot of really good stories, make sure you do this tour. I was expecting much less actually. I have done other older home tours and all you see is a lot of old furnishings really but this one you get a lot of history, detail on the people that lived there and the structure itself. They explain why it has survived all the hurricanes. John is 79 and is the handy man and also tells first hand stories of Mrs. Stranahan who lived to be very old.
Very nice, amazing that these Indians created so many constructive ideas, then the Spaniards destroyed history, sad
Interesting day trip tour. Worth the price to visit. Learnt a lot about Fort Lauderdale history on the tour.
Ive taken the tour on two different occasions. Each tour was entertaining and enlightening
Very nice view... will definitely be back..
This place is amazing and is definitely haunted. This house was here when there was nothing else but jungle and Indians would arrive in canoes to buy or trade goods
Love local History. Very accurate and tour hosts are fantastic.
Cuter than heck..surrounded buy modern high rises
We didnt get to go into the museum due to the time of day it was and catching the water taxi but the house looks amazing and so intresting
Fun place nice staffs but to allowed to make noise
John that works there is an amazing person he loves that place the history is part of Fort Lauderdale you should record all the things he knows hes an asset to your place thank you John incredible the 80 years old your spirit is amazing
Very well preserved. The tour is very well done. Check on line to verify when it is open.
Very interesting tour and I learned quite a bit about early Fort Lauderdale and the Stranahans.
This is a fantastic little tour and a wonderful way to support this historic foundation. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable and shared very interesting stories of the Stranahans. You will learn some very interesting history in this tour and I highly recommend it!
I love to visit historical houses when traveling. If you do too, dont miss the Stranahan. You must go on a tour but that makes it all the more interesting. The guide that we had was very knowledgeable. We learned so much about the history of Fort Lauderdale. We were there just before Christmas and the house was beautifully decorated for the holidays.
See my YouTube video of it decorated for Victorian Christmas.
Took the fairy boat guide once. It makes for a great addition to any day at the canal. Also FREE
Small museum; but very unique.
Firstly right in the heart of Fort Lauderdale . In fact tucked away among the high rises. The parking is fine though a tad convoluted-- Re: parking garage etc. Now our visit was on a weekend so I really cant speak for a weekday. Very, very lovely place.
Its up to scratch as far as views are concerned, does need a lot of maintenance.
Take the tour! My husband and I, plus our 9 year old daughter, visited on May 8, 2018. Great property, what a gem. Step back in time! A welcome break from the hustle-and-bustle of modern Fort Lauderdale. Our tour guide Doris (a retired school teacher) was informative and kind! On the second floor, our tour guide was Richard. Don’t miss this.
Cool venue for a party.
Excellent volunteer guide and Im sorry I cant remember his name. I do recall he said he went to college or university in Chicago. A must do for history of Ft. Lauderdale. We had 4 in our tour on a rainy morning so there was time for questions and more conversation about the Stranahans and the area.
Takes you back to a time of comfort and rest.
Very interesting historical look back into the founding of Fort Lauderdale
Older volunteer was very grouchy but young man that finished our tour was a s delight
A great little Museum that introduces you to 19th Century Florida. A nice place to bring the family and convenient dining right around the corner
Loved learning about a preserved piece of history from the area. Tour guide Tommy excellent, enthusiastic, knowledgeable. Made the tour interesting and fun. Met John in the gift shop who had met Mrs. Stranahan on several occasions-- made history come alive even more. Well worth the time to visit and step back in time.
Definitely worth a visit. Look forward to spending an hour here, maybe after lunch. The guided tour tells a captivating story that will satisfy your craving for local history. Call ahead to make sure they arent closed for a private event. Wear comfy shoes, and be prepared to go up and down the staircases. Buy something from the gift shop and help support this non-profit organization.
Pretty cool historic house and story
Nice place to visit, make sure to go to the artists on the 3rd floor.
Free boat rides here! Nice urban design along the channel.
Visited here for a quilt airing there was no on-site parking in the event was underwhelming
I highly recommend visiting this historic home. You will learn how Ft Lauderdale came to be, with the Stranahan family and the impact they left to the area. You can get there via water taxi and there is also a small parking lot.
Sweet volunteers !
Fun place nice staff great downtown location.
Great way to spend an afternoon if your at all interested in your hometowns history.
Beautifully cared for property. A wonderful venue for an outdoor wedding.
Very interesting information, especially about Mrs. Ivy Stranahan! Worth stopping for a guided tour.
We enjoyed the tour at the historic Stranahan House that lasts about an hour. We learned about the history of the home, its residents, and the city itself
Great place to learn about South Florida History. I volunteer there!! If youre into ghost hunting, this is the place, check it out under the paranormal website! Have Fun!!
Fun place. Ghost tour, was great. Done only in the last week of October.
People who work there are beyond hospitable
While on a cruise we stopped in on one of our sightseeing tours interesting
Great tour. Staff is very friendly!!
My mother and I are often volunteers at the Historic Stranahan House and we have a blast getting into costumes for the special holiday tours. It is also loads of fun talking about the deep history of the house and the all that the Stranahans have done for Fort Lauderdale.
Superb.Must see.
Nice place to visit, Loved it.
Unique place on the river
Really nice tour with lots of history. Better see it now! FT Lauderdale is not a history friendly city. Tour guides here were great!
Beautiful at Christmas time. The guide was very knowledgeable.
Its a historical place with cool history no doubt, but its definitely over-hyped. Dont plan on spending a whole lot of time here. Call the place to make sure they havent closed it for a private event.
Excellent snapshot of life in a trading Post 100 years ago. If you are lucky the ghost taps you on the shoulder
The riverside is good. Did not get into the house.
Excellent services and good food
A fascinating glimpse into early Florida, relations with Seminole, lifestllyle of early merchants, politics, conservative religious outlook, construction, and much more.
HISTORIC BUILDING ON THE NEW RIVER SOUTH OF LAS OLAS. ITS IN AWESOME CONDITION. REAL FT. LAUDERDALE HISTORY, INTERIOR IS AUTHENTIC.
Great learning experience. Its a guided tour of the house located in the heart of downtown. You learn a lot on the first fort Lauderdale family to help the Indians.
The Stranahan house was an amazing place to visit! The tour guides knew SO MUCH about the place! The founding of Fort Lauderdale couldnt be any more interesting! The tour ran over, as our guide took the time to give us little details and stories that only they knew about. We were urged to take pictures and to enjoy the history! Take a tour of this great place!!!
Went to the Christmas boat parade and we were herded around like cattle. Told to be there at 7:15 and were not allowed into the house until 8:00 PM, the time the boat was suppose to leave. While waiting, I asked twice if we would be able to take pictures and not be rushed. Said yes and both were lies. Before we entered the house and after we entered the house we were forced to listen to endless chatter about the Stranahan family and then were corralled from room to room to listen to the Stranahan family legacy. When I faded back to take pictures I was told to keep up with the group because there was another group behind us and we had to rush because the boat was past due from leaving. There was a nasty little girl who watched me like a hawk to keep me moving and was making snide remarks every time I stopped to take a picture.I took friends who were visiting from Sweden and was embarrassed by the lack of class and quality of this trip. It was all about money. You will not like the way you are treated. Do not go for 1/2 the price
Cute and informative. Its really small so Im not sure if you get the most bang for your buck but the staff are simply charming.
Great tour of the house and very knowledgeable guides and caretaker
Really knowledgeable guides, was at an event next door and stopped by after. They werent busy at that time, they gave us a tour of house on the spot, very interesting....
I believe that Ivey Stranahan, was a testament to hard work, and dedication. Amazing woman.
A great place to visit, guided tour are available, really nice staff.
Great place to visit...lots of history
Wonderful location and a fantastic tour guide with tons of information on the very beginnings of Fort Lauderdale. If you like historical places~ add this to your bucket list!
Incredible venue for a waterfront wedding. Great tent, great views. The mens bathroom needs some work, but its serviceable.
Docent Evelyn very good
Great place to stop to learn the history of the area. Out guide John did a great job. He even knew Mrs. Stranahan
Great historical information!
History Fun
Great experience and very interesting
Shuttle passed did not stop
Very cool house, and amazing location in the heart of Los Olas. Held my sisters wedding here and couldnt have been happier.
We happened to be the only two people on the tour. It was amazing! Learned so much!
Its so wonderful to be able to step back in time at this lovingly preserved museum.
Looks like being well maintained.
