Great little area. Beautiful view. Covered picnic tables. Worth a quick stop..
We pass this place on the back way to Tucson, I went to do the Google on Mr. Tom Mix and lo and behold my cellular dEvice had no circulation. Its a good thing there was shade and a table to stand on to keep the rattlers from gettin me. Mind your pace through the city of gold, aint just rattlers in the bushes.
Wonderful drive to and from Oro Valley, and a great stop here for a break.
Its a an informative place dedicated to the memory of a western movie icon. Its located just north of the wash where Tom Mix lost his life in a car accident.
Nice drive from Tucson to Phoenix.
This place is an example of why its good to get off the major highway and to sometimes take the side road to where youre heading. This is on the old road between Phoenix and Tucson. Not a lot to see, but just and interesting stop, and youd never see it if you stick to super slab. A little piece of American history. Tom Mix died at this spot. If you dont know who Tom Mix is, then this is a good opportunity to learn some history. Glad we stopped.
Its a little memorial out in the middle of nowhere. Too the bike out, super awesome ride. Do it in the cooler months.
Nice memorial for the old movie cowboy star, billed as Hollywood’s first western movie star. who died in a tragic car accident here. He was driving to Phoenix from Tucson, speeding on the then gravel road and diverted around a construction crew & lost control of his convertible & hit the ditch. The luggage he had strapped down on his trunk, launched forward and basically internally decapitated the movie star.
Nice place to stop, take a break from driving and enjoy a piece of history. Be ware of other drivers who wont slow down for you to pull over.
Its a fine place to stop on the run between Florence and Oracle Junction, but lets be honest here. Its literally a memorial to a drunk driver. A guy who got drunk, drove through warning signs saying the road was under construction, crashed into a wash, and died. The fact that he was a movie star in his day really shouldnt overshadow that fact. Lets remember Tom Mix, another fatal DUI.
Great place to stop (Butt Brake, Stretch your Legs) whether on a Bike Ride, Driving your Convertable, or Regular Car!!Full information on WHO Tom Mix is is available, and just a nice Desert place to visit on your journey between Florence, and Oracle JunctionYou wont regret stopping
Pass by this place often when heading to Tucson ... just a nice place to stop and sign in that you visited and read up on Tom Mix - quaint little pull over
A look back in history!
This is an interesting rest stop along the route between Florence and Oracle Junction. There are covered tables, but no water or bathroom facilities. We have used this several times a place to rest while riding bicycles out here.
Very nice place to stop.
Nice little rest stop
My Mom really liked this stop. She new alot about Tom Mix. She thought that was great they made this memorial.
Great place that we found by accident. Good shaded area to rest and eat some food. Nice that they have trash receptacles also.
I love this monumentThis was first time I was there with camera
Interesting history! Great place to meet fellow bikers!
Perfect stop between Oro Valley and Phoenix.
Great little rest area. Tom Mix was an iconic actor from the silent movie era 1920s. The movie Nevada Smith is about is life.
Visiting the Tom Mix memorial opened up a personal journey that stired the dreamer and child in me. Lets face it most havent heard of Tom Mix...and often know nothing or little about him. Tom Mix was linked to Wyatt Erp and many real life cowboys...which inspired his acting and little boys and dreamers who he tempted with the promise to become a cowboy just like him.So, what did I think of the memorial? The fact that someone goes out of the way to provide brochures and conteny to those who visit demonstrates that Tom Mix was more than an actor...he is a legend.Put this obscure site at the top of your must see sites.
Little out of the way stop honoring an old time singing cowboy.
Interesting bit of history and a good place to stretch your legs.
Its very cool
Lots of trash cans. And a few picnic tables with shade. Id stop here and eat any day.
We stopped to picnic and had a nice time. There are several roofed areas with tables, but like the other stops on the Pinal Parkway, no bathrooms. There was information about Tom Mix and why the memorial is in that spot.
Lots to know about old Tom mix I was fascinated to learn about him
Good place to stop and see the site, very nicely done
Great place to stop for rest along the highway. The memorial is a simple affair, but includes details about his life and death. You can drive later, stretch your legs and make the stop.
I mean, its a small stone column, but 79 is a great road with much State & Trust land close. Thats really nice. If you need a break, this might be a nice place. After that, enjoy the drive on 79.
Tom Mix Memorial is located on Hwy 79 (Pinal Pioneer Pkwy) between Oracle Junction and Florence. Behind the Memorial in the ramada is amazing literature on Tom Mix. There is plenty of room to pull of the Hwy with any size RV . Awesome place for a snack, lunch or dinner. Couple of grills and picnic tables. Amazing place to view sunrise and sunset .
Somebody left out some cool pictures and paraphernalia about Tom Mix. They even put in a visitors log to sign in on. Looks like they probably put it there everyday. First time I stopped here. I drove by before but never stopped.
A little roadside stop with a statue and story of legendary Tom Mix and how he died. Neither much to see nor well maintained, but worthy of stopping just to learn about one of early movies first cowboys.
I feel like Im one of the few people who know who Tom Mix was.
A nice little stop if your a fan of the old westerns
Nice turn out for long drive. Enjoy reading the history
Great spot to have a snack/meal and enjoy the southern Arizona environment. Lots of covered tables and the memorial. I stop here often to have a quiet moment on my long drives.
Didnt know who Tom Mix was till I seen the signs and pulled over to investigate. Now Im a full fledged rootn tootn Tom Mix fan. Tragic end to his life but what a life he look led. Every Merican should know about the fullness of his legend. Only reason 4 stars is because of the yahoos that have vandalized the p li ace...may they find Jesus!
Always a good Stop to Relax, on the Pioneer Parkway. And remember the old Rodeo/Film Rider Tom Mix.
Terrible ending to such a pioneer... He truly was the first hero, who wore a white hat, rode a horse,,, RIP COWBOY
Great memorial to an interesting man that shaped the Western movie genre. Someone puts out a copy of the newspaper report about the death of Tom Mix and the timeline leading up to his car accident that is on the side if the memorial. His death, just like his life, has many mysteries. The picnic tables and shade are very nice. No restroom facilities, just a nice place to stretch your legs and contemplate a different era.
Its a nice memorial. Just wish people wouldnt vandalize the area.
This wayside on Hwy 79 from Oro Valley to Phoenix is at the spot where Tom Mix met his doom in an auto accident at age 60 in 1940. Covered picnic tables & stone BBQs.
Its ok
Watching the super blood moon here. Perfect view.
Good little rest stop with a cool backstory
Had car trouble, it was no problem finding plenty of room to park.
This memorial is on the scenic part of Rt. 79 and is worth a stop to lean about one of our early Hollywood western stars. The desert location certainly sets the mood as well as provides an opportunity to walk among the cactus. There are even geocaches in the area. There are no facilities here other than a covered picnic table/bench and 2 stone BBQ grills, no bathrooms and no water.
Nice side of the road rest stop. No facilities, does have picnic tables.
Good history
Interesting if you read the signs. Nice rest stop.
A good place to visit and a very good memorial that acknowledges the achievements of a legend could have done with a restroom there because it is in the middle of nowhere.
Kind of sad that he ended his life and career this way, just another drunk driving accident for such a legend! A roadside kiosk with a covered picnic table with a copy of the article about his life, movie career, and death. Its a shame that the kiosk leaves out the fact that Tom Mix was a personal friend of Wyatt Earp, and was one of the pallbearers at his funeral. Tom Mix, along with Wyatt Earp, really wrote the end of the Old West at the turn of the century and all the legends and colorful characters that went along with. The county and state could do a little better, in that the papers depicting the newspaper article and his pictures from his movie career and the picture of him on his beloved Indian motorcycle, could be laminated and left out there, with rocks on top of them. Im surprised, frankly, that these items have not been stolen or taken by curious passers-by who can just drive up and see them on the picnic table and take off with them. It just shows how life is fleeting, and how unforgiving the silent desert is.
Just a good place to take a break, have a snack& soda, read the articles about Tom Mix. Enjoy a quiet moment before continuing.
Nice shady area for GoldWingers to see point of interest for Touring AZ.
Nice no frills stop along a pretty highway.
Somebody is doing a sign in and printing of Toms demise. Pretty cool, I had no idea.
Rest area with shade and picnic tables
Its a roadside table in the middle of the desert.
Great place to pull off and take a break.
Nice bit of history
A good place to rest on Az HW79 and reflect on Tom Mix.
What an amazing sight! Well worth the long drive.
Very nice memorial to Tom Mix. Quite a story.
We stopped here to have a picnic lunch on the way to Phoenix from Tucson.
The place is nice for a quick stop
Its ok, road side stop. No services
Great place for picnic roadside
Interesting piece of Arizona history.
The original singing cowboy. Ran across while browsing maps so we stopped on the way from the airport.
It is getting old and needs fixing. But still a great place.
Love this stop, anytime!
INTERESTING PLACE

Could not distinguish the ravine where the missing bridge might have been.
