Wonderful, reflective museum in Federal Way. Located as part of the ground in the former Weyerhaeuser complex. Great exhibits of the bonsai and easy to navigate. One big plus during the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is outdoors. The bonsai and grounds are well taken care of. The narrative of the museum is also well curated. Definitely recommended to everyone.
This Bonsai exhibit along with the Rhododendron Garden is a Zen oasis where one can find peace and beauty.A photographer could spend days snapping pics of the beautiful flowers, ponds, prairies, trees and bamboo stands in this small but majestic place. The winding trails are perfect to take a stroll and are wide enough to be family friendly. Take a book and use one of the many benches along the path for some quality reading time. The bonsai is are fascinating and some are 100s of years old.A hidden gem!
I love this place!!!! The collection of trees is amazing and the staff is super friendly. Its always so peaceful walking through here. Highly recommend taking the time to take a stroll among the fantastic trees.
Gorgeous art pieces. I would suggest taking your time viewing the exhibits and informational placards. A lot of history is held within these bonsai trees, try to give them the respect that their cultivators gave when producing these wonderful pieces of living art.
This feels like a hidden gem. Most people I know have never heard of this place, and every time I go, its not that busy. The grounds are incredibly well maintained and the specimens are unbelievably well cared for. On the way in, you pass by the old Weyerhaeuser corporate office which looks like its straight out of a Bond film. The entire experience is surreal and feels like youve left the area and transported to someplace much more tranquil. Id also recommend the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden which is in the same spot but technically not the same thing.
Amazing little gem. Very beautiful, displays are well spaced and documented. We will be back!
Free place to spend the day or at least a couple hours. One of the Best part of my trip ..
A beautiful collection from around the world are on display in an open air exhibit. A gravel footpath takes you through a forested park that seems miles away from the noise of the city and freeway that surround it. Guided tours available on Sundays as well as groups by appointment or stroll leisurely on your own. Either way itll be an enjoyable experience. I personally look forward to repeating this experience multiple times in the future.
Stopped by the Pacific Bonsai Museum today on the way to Seattle. Havent been in years, and the collection seems larger and more impressive with a few indoor and many outside trees from some highly-regarded American and international bonsai artists. Id highly recommend anyone interested in bonsai stopping by if theyre in the area.
If you appreciate nature and the art of bonsai, this is a great stop to witness some beautiful creations.
Such a cute little museum to visit for FREE - cant beat that. They have many beautiful bonsai trees, and I especially loved seeing that many of them had fall colors. The only thing I wish they had is more information at the beginning as to how exactly the bonsai trees are made. There was one sign that talked about how they are trained, but didnt give any details about it, so I left the museum appreciating the art, but not really knowing how it worked or understanding it any more than I did before.
Easy to get to once you realize where it is! Considering the cost (FREE!) its definitely worthwhile! Pretty neat to see the age and info on each display. Love the living art concept and how it is all outdoors! The walk from the parking lot is easy but beautiful as well. Perfect for if you only have a few minutes or equally perfect if you have all day!
Great bonsai and historical exhibit. Our family learned a lot.
So serene and peaceful. Beautiful living art. Free to the public. Probably better in the spring/summer when the bonsai have leaves but still amazing in the winter.
It was my first time at this museum and it was beautiful, very clean and well-maintained, nicely organized and designed, great customer service since you walk in, each display had very interesting and informative information about history of each bonsai, for me its always mesmerizing, and I really enjoyed my time there.
My family and I really liked this place. Was hoping for a bit different selection of rhodadendrin than what they had but was still quite impressed with the variety that they do have. The actual bonsai area was very well maintained. Like better than most I see.Overall 5 stars.Great place.Maintained trails.Clean museum.Lots of parking.Helpful staff.
This is an absolutely stunning museum. The specimens on display are amazing and most of them have a plaque telling the bonsais history and origin.
This museum is beautiful informative and above all very peaceful.
You might think that walking around and looking at trees in the rain is not a fun time. You would be wrong. In full bloom in the spring this amazing collection of bonsai and the adjacent rhododendrons are spectacular. But on our last visit in November, walking through the Mists and drizzle, it was a beautiful peaceful experience. This is one of the most amazing collections in the world and always worth a visit.
Pretty cool outdoor setup to enjoy and learn an varieties of bonsai. We didnt know bonsai can get so large and over 500 years old.
This is one of the best bonsai gardens Ive been to...if not the very best. The setting and natural surroundings compliment the stunning bonsai specimens they display. I take family and friends from out of town quite often and they are always impressed.
Excellent, donation-based museum with old and unique bonsais
The whole area is great to go walking in. Nice flat wide gravel trails. Easy for a stroller. It is winter but still it was beautiful inside the rhododendron gardens. I cant wait to go back when everything is actually in bloom.
This is a super cool gem! They offer free guided tours (check the website for details) we went on a Sunday afternoon. Or you can just walk through on your own. The admission is collected as donations and I highly recommend supporting them as maintaining the collection is very intensive. We plan to come back throughout the seasons to watch the cycles.
Amazing museum for being free! Shows the history of Japanese Americans in the area. There is also another garden that is $8 for the entry fee, but entirely worth it!
Totally relaxing, cool hidden gem of a museum. They have new exhibitions regularly, so its always a new experience. Great for kids who want to get a look at a different culture, or enthusiasts who just want to learn more and experience the serenity.
Wonderful outdoor location, lots interesting, educational signage. The variety of trees is impressive.
Absolutely stunning and very well laid out. The signs had useful and interesting information and were paired with perfect trees to reflect different bonsai principles. ADDED BONUSES: its FREE and next door to a huge rhododendron forest full of trails!
Absolutely loved this place. Spent way longer than I expected and learned a lot about bonsai and art. I left excited to visit again in a new season to see the changes. Incredible as a free museum! And the people there were friendly too, we were greeted and offered umbrellas to borrow when we came in and wished well when we left. Didnt see many folks here, but it was the middle of a day on Friday so it likely gets more people on the weekends.
A really special and moving exhibit. Highly recommended.
Small bonsai museum, its free to enjoy, but they accept donation, it helps them alot for any money that are donated at the end of the museum
There are many wonderful examples of bonsai here, with lots of information about the individual pieces and the art itself. Most of the trees are outdoors (some require more stable temperatures and are kept in a little greenhouse), and admission is free, which is great. I cant wait to visit during other seasons to see how the bonsai change.
Wonderful peaceful place. Very understated which makes it even better
This museum has beautiful trees in a lovely outdoor setting. We arrived a little late for the 1pm Sunday tour, but were able to jump right in. Im so glad we did! The tour was informative and entertaining. I highly recommend this museum!
Lots of great examples of different styles...easy walkthrough...right next door to rhododendron species garden...clean bathrooms friendly staff...enjoyJ
One of the most beautiful places Ive been too. The bonsai museum was so cool, especially this time of year with the fall colors showing. The garden grounds are also gorgeous!
Came for a free tour on a Sunday. Thank you for the lovely exhibit!
Amazing museum! i would recommend this to anyone! i plan on visiting here many times to come.
The bondai display was awesome! Each one was better than the last. Its free, also.
Current exhibition covers the effect of WWII and Japanese-American internment on the propagation of bonsai in the US and in Japan.
Wow... Lots to see, pathways through out the gardens and wonderful bonsai as well. Beautiful art and great poetry as well today
Wow, a total hidden gem, fantastic opertunity to visit a world treasure of rare and beautiful bonsai. Set in tranquil surroundings. A honestly must see place. Closed on mondays.
Awesome place to visit. Go early around 10am and youll beat the crowd. $10 suggested donation. A lot of impressive bonsais. Takes about 45 minutes if you read all the descriptions.
A must visit! Free, but you should definitely make a donation at the end. Parking is in a seperate lot and you walk along a cute path to the entrance. Cute but small gift shop.Unfortunately, i was with my two year old and her taste in entertainment does not involve these incredible plants. My visit was very enjoyable. I enjoyed the art exhibit that was going on.
Super cool space. I learned a lot and grew an appreciation for bonsai. The museum is outdoors so come prepared. They have an extensive bonsai collection that is really remarkable featuring many different types of trees. It is free, but the rhododendron garden next door is $8. Easy parking, but prepare to walk a short path through trees to get to the entrance.
Beautifully maintained, constantly in awe over the different types of rhododendrons and plenty of other flowers. I came here for the blue poppy festival and I enjoyed it!
Pleasant and interestingly presented. We spent a leisurely 30 minutes learning about bonsai and taking pictures. Theres a greenhouse and the rest is outdoors. The atmosphere is immersive with tall ivy-covered walls and white walls arrayed artfully. It shares a courtyard with the Rhodedendron Species Garden (botanical garden) and visiting both makes it worth making the trip. I recommend it for people who like taking pictures, miniatures, art, Japanese culture, and meticulously caring for plants. Small children may not think its fun. Admission is free, donations accepted (including dipping debit or credit cards). Its all self-guided with informational posters. There are restrooms and a drinking fountain. The 5 minute walk from the parking lot is a relatively flat gravel path. Wheelchair parking is in a separate lot. While driving there, an important turn lacks signage, but Google Maps will guide you properly. Was my review helpful? Please give a like.
This is not just a great place to see amazing bonsai, but they have a great educational series of posters and plaques that explain some of the things bonsai enthusiasts judge bonsai on. Great visit!
I have no knowledge about bonsais and came across this place serendipitously. Fabulous! A tranquil place showing amazing growing pieces of art. This is a wonderful place to visit and see beauty in a way that is unexpected. Worth the 30-45min visit.
Will go again! So pretty and calming space. Clean and plenty of parking. The restroom was clean and fresh smelling. They have such an amazing collection!
NICE OUTDOOR MUSEUM good walk through in Federal Way WaCool Bonsai trees with history
Enjoyed this place. Im a bonsai lover from way back.
Visited the Pacific Bonsai Museum on a beautiful, sunny, fall weekday afternoon. I had been wanting to visit this museum for quite a long time as i have been nurturing a few bonsai trees of my own for a little over a year. Since i did not see any workers at the entrance to the museum, i made a donation to support the programs. Once in the exhibit area, that was presenting bonsai as an artform with focus on the elements of design. Each display contined three trees, each tree had an information plate identifying the type of tree, its geogrsphic origins, age, and owner. Many of the trees also had an information plate providing a narrative as to how the tree was aquired, cared for, technique used to train the tree to its unique bonsai features and discussion to its artistic design attributes.I didnt count how many trees there were total, but estimate 65 to 80 trees. More than enough to provide me with practical and educational information, technique, and ideas to apply to my own bonsai collection.I would have liked to see more examples of indoor trees. Most exhibits were of outdoor trees. Probably because it was optimal season to show outdoor trees. I will have to return again later in the fall or in the winter to see if indoor trees are being shown. All and all, a very enjoyable couple hours.
Cool place. Nice walk. Beautiful plants and flowers.
This a wonderful spot next to the Rhododedren Gardens full of stunning examples of the Bonzai craft. Well worth visit!
There are some really neat bonsai trees here! Its fun to see how old they are, I went in the winter, but spring would probably be more enjoyable as most of the exhibit is outside.
Its a very pretty place has lots of nature walking space. The garden you pay about $8 to get in and is awesome for walking but also easy to get lost in. The bonsai are amazing (donation only garden area)
A very nice exhibit of Bonsai. I think that October (for the maple’s leaves turning) and May-June (next door is the Rhododendron garden and they should be blooming then) would be the ideal times of year to visit, for full effect. Donation based fees, and a nice little gift store. About 1.5-2 miles of trails in the surrounding area. I highly recommend it!
A lovely small outdoor museums with interesting small trees, it is free and there is a lot of parking
Amazing! A beautifully cultivated space with dozens of incredible bonsai specimens. Plaques describe the trees in detail; their history, the techniques used to shape them, etc. Nestled in a serene forested area, it presents a wonderful opportunity to see these fantastic miniatures juxtaposed beside their giant kin. Its like taking a walk through time, seeing through the eyes of a giant, and guided by the artistic genius of bonsai masters.
What a lovely place for a walk! The flowers and gardens are amazing. The Bonsai museum really blew me away. I entered not particularly caring about bonsai, and left with a new respect for the work and art involved. The Rhododendron gardens (right next door) are also quite lovely and a great place to enjoy during a sunny day. The wildlife was also quite enjoyable. Will return!
So interesting!
Perfect place to learn, take a walk and buy plants
Fabulous tiny trees and wonderful histories. Highly recommend ONLY if youre willing to read the placards associated with the tree. You will not enjoy yourself if you just look at the tiny tree and neglect to read its story.
I love the Pacific Bonsai Museum. It’s so beautiful and the stories that accompany the trees are heartwarming, tragic, and important reminder of the US’ history.
Gorgeous, full of history and thoughtfully arranged to teach and provoke questions.
Nice little free are with some amazingly beautiful bonsai
Who knew there were so many awesome bonsai trees in one place. What a treat! Totally worth the visit.
This was really cool even though it’s a bit out of the way!!
Beautiful outdoor gardens! Amazing treesWent for holiday festival at night. Great work! Paths lit up with Christmas lights. Also very informative
Interesting stop. I love the art lesson to go along with the beauty of the trees.
This was surprisingly awesome! Really well laid out museum which makes it easy to view and think about the artistic little trees. A fun stop!
If you think you know your trees wait until your here. The Bonsai Museum is the best place to rethink trees in miniature from Cyprus to Fig which I love I can truly in vision myself standing under such spectacular trees if I wasnt such a Giant. I love going for walks and seeing nature Were going to be members I dont want to miss any opportunity to breath clean air in nature.
Great little place! Highly recommend visiting! Its great to go back when the art exhibits change.
Wow! I dont know if the collection has grown significantly or if I just missed a huge section of it years ago when I was last there. Would love to go back in the winter and see the plastic enclosures around the plants during the cold weather. So happy this amazing collection has been saved!
I have to say right off that I really love this type of place so my evaluation may be too enthusiastic. I loved it and at every turn it was better. We went there at the best possible time maximum blooms. So late April it is worth the trip. So if youre going to Seattle do it in April and visit.
Wonderful plants. They not only have bonsai plants with description and age of the species but the Weyerhaeuser gardens with all the fabulous rhododendrons and azalea bushes makes it a great way to spend a few hours. Parking is free as well as the bonsai display but there is a small charge for the rhododendron walk but well worth it.
This is an absolutely stunning outdoor bonsai display. The little trees were all labeled with their ages and other fascinating information about their propagation. The display is a meandering series of open cubbies to gently guide you through the botanically curated sections. A curator was on hand and professionally answered our questions. We were delighted to visit here and will bring visitors.
Amazing bonsai collection. Nicely arranged so each tree has its own small showcase area.
If you like nature, or bonsai, just need something to pass the time or need an idea for a good date, this place is amazing. It is impeccably taken care of and always looks its best no matter what season the docents have all been incredibly helpful and great to take too.
This place is small but magical. There is an extensive collection of bonsai trees, all different varieties and ages. It was quite amazing. It is mostly outside so dress for the weather.
Wonderful, gorgeous collection. Worth checking out!
Beautiful outdoor museum with more than 40 bonsais. This was a wonderful place to spend the afternoon with my husband.
Ive only visited this outdoor museum once, but I plan on returning frequently. There are many gorgeous examples of bonsai artistry on display with highlights including a lovely coastal redwood and a number of fun variants of maples and pines. Ive recently began experimenting with home bonsai gardening, and this is a great resource for ideas, knowledge and visuals.
Great place to interact with beautiful bonsai trees
Amazing place for bonsai lovers! Worth a visit.
Ive been here twice with my bonsai enthusiast partner. A large and wonderful collection awaits you, with comfortable bathrooms and ample parking- all for free! We happened to go there on mothers day while a special bonsai festival was happening. There were live demonstrations, food carts and a tent with many additional specimens to view. Super bonus: wisteria in bloom. We love it.
One of the largest collections on the west coast.
Really amazing place to visit. Beautiful exhibit and easy to get to.
Very nice garden. So beautiful!
Picture perfect and tucked away in the tall forests of the Pacific Northwest this museum is stunning on all levels. The collection is world class and well worth a visit no matter where you are travelling in from.
A wonderfully peaceful experience, with some of the most impressive bonsai specimens Ive ever viewed!
Great museum. Surprisingly good. Stop by and donate if you can.
