The trails are not clearly marked at all. The orange trail randomly stops and there is ZERO indication of where to go, other than to completely turn around. One trail is completely blocked by a downed tree. It would be nice to have postings along the way to show how far youve gone and how much further you have left to go.
I would agree that the trail makings are not the best. However, the trail themselves are very visible. You really cant get lost, just keep following the trails. It is an easy trail. A nice place. There is very obvious evidence of heavy erosion on the higher gradient portions of these trails. I am not sure if this is new but its quite profound. Some of the parts leading down to the trails look like stream beds. If you really look at it, you can see what has happened: heavy rains have actually pushed rocks into the trail centers. Mother nature always wins...slowly converting the trails into streams. Be careful around these areas, as the soil is very soft.I will leave you with one final thought...Upon leaving the park, consider this: a huge portion of Long Island was originally just like that park. It is a chunk of the few surviving virgin forest areas. I verified this with topographical and family estate maps as far back as the 1820s. The entire area from NY-347, down to NY-27 was all forest and this park is really one of the only true surviving chunks of it. The entire town of Brookhaven was basically a forest just like that. Perhaps even more crazy is that prior the Europeans arriving here, our records of the history of this land is largely unknown. People have lived here for 12,000+ years. That has stuck with me. Ponder this at least once on your trip.
Ive been to this park twice now and have enjoyed my hike each time. Trails are well kept, markings for trails are sometimes hard to find as there are two loops that intertwine. Some spots in the trails arent marked so you kind of have to guess where the trail goes until you see the next marking. All in all, its a solid trail.
Easy trails. They could do better blazing on orange trail. Erosion could be fought with water bars.
Very nice. Quite and peaceful
People should pick up after their dogs
Great place to relax, good exercise, the hills really give you a workout.
The rock tree that is there is beautiful
Nice place. Its being overtaken by japanese barberry meanwhile park rangers just sit in their cars looking for dogs off of their leash. Typical government revenue generation instead of actually earning their pay.
Nice hiking trail
A nice place to walk with good, clean, well-kept trails. Id give it 4 stars if not for the ridiculous amount of thorn vines all over the edges of the trails & into the woods. My toddler loves to bushwhack, but I couldnt let him off the trails here at all because of the prickley bushes - his words. But if youre looking for straight trail walking, this is a great place for it. Not too long, and nicely maintained.
Peaceful marked trails
Great place to Walk Around the trails and unwind!!!
Nice trails
Great hike with challenging hills. Also, the trails are well marked.
Tried to go running here while Im in town for work based on others reviews. This is the worst park Ive ever been in and is absolutely not appropriate for running. The trails are sand and river rock (not gravel) so a sprained ankle is almost guaranteed. The trail map at the entrance to the park shows 2 easy to follow and clearly marked trails with a nice system of color coded blazes to guide the way.... The reality is a spider web of criss crossing trails all marked with identical blue or orange blazes or totally unmarked. Many of them are just small side loops that come right back to the main trail, while others simply dead end in a garbage pile or a clearing... So in short the trail map is garbage. Even with all the detours of figuring out the trails, I only ran 1.6 miles according to my GPS which isnt even a workout, so the distances were wrong too.And to top it all off, people were smoking weed on the trail in 2 places! If you want to walk a very short distance and/or smoke weed then maybe this park is for you.. Otherwise avoid it!
Nice quiet, park. Plenty of marked trails to wander around on, clean not much in the way of litter or debris. If you like nature then you should check this park out
