This is a reasonably challenging public course with narrow fairways in many spots and nice elevation changes on many holes. When playing in mid-September, many areas of the course were under major repair with a lot of turf restoration and reseeding in process, making for some real rough patches of hard dirt instead of fairway and tall enough rough that finding balls was especially tough. Play was especially slow today with about half of the groups appearing to be ad-hoc foursomes -- play was about 4.5 hours for 18 holes and waiting on most tee boxes. Id definitely recommend Penderbrook for casual golfers just looking to get a cost effective 18 holes in and look forward to playing it again in the spring when the fall turf repair is complete.
Course wasnt bad, greens, tee boxes, fairways and bunkers were all in decent shape for the most part. Reasonable greens fees. Pro shop was sad, very little merchandise, was not greeted or told who I was playing with, if anyone, where to go or asked if Id been there before. No starter either, I basically just loaded an open cart and teed off, never saw anyone from the staff. Restaurant was also pretty dire, most of the lights were off and limited options. Also no beverage cart out there although there was a water in all of the jugs where they had them. Very slow play, no Marshal and they definitely need one. Decent value, decent course but missing some of the other details.
The course was overpriced! First time golfing at Penderbrook and most of the greens were in poor condition. Several “bald” spots with little to no grass. The fairways were obviously under repair. The Ranger was not coming around enough, because the course of play was extremely slow. There was a group in front of us who delayed not only our group, but everyone behind us. When the Ranger finally came around we were going on 4 hours at hole 16. He allegedly addressed the slow group. I have played far better courses for far less in the DelMarVa area. I would not recommend.
Let me tell you! My husband and I just left brunch at Mulligans Pub on the Green, in penderbrook. Food was simply amazing, great price, and that peach cobbler.....Im gonna dream about it. If you ever want a good brunch with great service, go out to Muligans see Don and his crew.
New management is doing a fantastic job getting this little gem in fantastic shape and has become a great place to golf. Ask about the Commonwealth membership - very reasonable and well worth it. Tight fairways, but in good shape and troubled areas have been replaced with sod and greens run true with very few ball marks. If you keep the ball in play and out of water you can score low. Cart girl comes around often plus half way house offers beverages/food with updated bathrooms. They’re working on new tee boxes for ladies, making it very lady friendly. Last year my husband and I both had Hole in Ones on the same day - mine #3 / 138 yards over water w/sand traps in the front and his #10 / 204 yards also over water sand trap on the right. We love this course!
Interesting course with a good layout that requires shot placement. Its a very good everyday course and not too long, but has its challenges. We gave had a lot of rain in the past week. It us visible where the drainage is not good on a few holes. The greens were in good condition, but some of the fairways were thin and patchy. However, it appears they are trying to revive some if the fairways (AKA 17th f/w).I like that the 18th isnt a very difficult hole to par. The length makes for a nice end of round finish.
The greens fees are pretty steep for a course that’s in such terrible shape. Getting the second star only because the bones of the course are good, but unfortunately this place needs some major, major help.
Course had just been aerated and sanded. My first time playing there. Found it to be difficult. Lots of blind shots.
Paying $74 for 18 holes is ridiculous here. I’m from Michigan and play courses in WAY better shape than this course for half the price. Not having a 9 hole rate and making 2somes pair up is a move for way better courses than this. It’s a challenging course but way overpriced for its condition.
This is that perfect golf course where you feel like you’re alone, even if the run of play is backed up. Gorgeous views, well-maintained greens, and the drink cart always seems to come around at exactly the right time.
We have gone several times though first time back since COVID. Was great experience. New management is very nice and welcoming. We will be back.
Too expensive green fee for twilight We started at 2pm only 11 holes was available.
Rich war profiteers relaxing comfortably
Course is in excellent shape for a late-November round. Greens run true, plays longer than what the scorecard states and requires some creative golf. A must-play in NOVA as the management team is working hard to make it the best place to play in the area.
Great round greens and fairways were in great shape
Fantastic challenging course. Very fast greens.
This course is TIGHT! Leave the driver in the bag, and bring plenty of balls. I’m not a terribly straight hitter, so it was a bit of a struggle for me. Course was in pretty good shape though, and the layout is nice. Lots of water and out of bounds. Starter was very friendly and helpful.
Have booked here with GolfNow twice and the system broke down and my tine didn’t appear on the tee times list at the course, including today when every course in the state is booked. Who is to blame?
Nice course with alot of natural beauty. Good challenges for full range of talent.
Quite lovely. Local beers and good prices.
Nice challenging layout. Not too bad for the price
Playable for hackers. Price good for NOVA.
Greens really need some work but this course has some great characteristics and fun water holes.
Challenging layout, some tight fairways in OK shape, smallish greens that were generally in good shape, clean good running cart. Overall the course could use some TLC (like most public courses). They could use more signs to direct you to the next tee box in a number of spots. Cost me about $25 more than I would pay back home in NJ for an equivalent course. Overall a decent challenging round in a nice setting.
The course was in decent shape and the trees are mature, which make it beautiful. It has a good mix of challenging and straightforward holes but its not too difficult. Its a very compact course, which makes for some interesting hole layouts. What I liked less:Due to the compactness, some tees and greens abut to each other on non-adjacent holes. The 9th hole does not lead back to the clubhouse. Their is a long drive, for a golf course, from the 17th hole to the 18th alongside a street. The starter wasnt very helpful, but he may have been a high schooler.
Well kept golf course. We always have great time when coming to Penderbrook to play,
Might be the worst course I’ve played at. One green was grass, the rest were sand. No tee boxes had level ground or grass, all sand again. Just moved to the area and looking for good courses to play at, and this is one I will never return to.
My family play here almost every weekend. It is a great place to have a lot of fun and enjoy a good game. The green fees are very reasonable and the course is a very challenging with a narrow fairways, a lot of trees and water obstacles. We lose a lot of golf balls so bring lots of old golf balls if you are a beginner....
Great day of golf!
Nice Community and golf course is amazing.
What a great day for golfing, course in good shape for $40.
Overall course is in good shape. The fringe on numerous holes was in terrible shape. Greens however are in above average condition. Course can challenging at times especially the water holes.
Great place and friendly staff
Nice golf course...
Rude staff. Course condition is horrible. Inconsistent policy.
Penderbrook Golf Course is a hidden jewel. The course is extremely well maintained and fun to play. Watch out for the 13th!
No cart person and no food and wouldn’t bring anything out to us. Terrible course and overpriced.
Paid $70. At best its a $55 course. Most green were ground under repair. Relentless knats and mosquitos
Penderbrook Golf Course opened their course for Thanksgiving and made it a Shotgun style at 10:00am. The weather was forecasted to be in the mid-40s making it for a chilly Thanksgiving golf round. When I arrived, at 9:30am there were roughly 30 other golfers (mostly Korean) waiting to tee off at 10:00am. Around 9:45am, the starter stated that there would be a frost delay and that we would be teeing off at 10:30am. That was understandable since the morning was in the high 30 degrees. When it was 10:30am, the starter claimed again there was still frost and the tee time would be pushed out to 11:00am. When I saw holes #1 and #7, there were clearly no frost showing and stated that fact to the starter. The starter said that there were still areas under the shade that had frost. When it was 11:00am, the starter again pushed the tee time to 11:15am and said anyone who wants a refund can get one and leave. At this point, half the people had Thanksgiving plans and decided to leave. By the time it was 11:15am, the starter said he no longer knew what time we would tee off and told us he would keep us informed (which he never did). By noon, the starter declared that no golf could be played ruining the Thanksgiving golf for the remaining people who waited over 2 hours and not play a single hole. I’ve spoken to 2 of my buddies who golfed on the SAME day on different courses in Virginia and said that they had no problems playing. This debacle by Penderbrook’s management ruined all of our Thanksgiving golf plans and could have avoided this by just canceling the shotgun golf since they knew the weather would be cold. This golf course has gone through so many different managements and I will NEVER play at this course ever again. DO NOT PLAY ON THIS COURSE!!!
I took a foursome golfing on June 15, 2018 and was very disappointed in the management and staff. The staff in the Pro shop was rude, and the starter was condescending. They acted like this course was Augusta, despite the fact that many of the fairways are burnt out and they have torn up the grass areas next to the greens. The course layout isnt a bad, (its your basic community course) but the Pro shop staff and the Starter were obnoxious. This will be the last time I play this course. Like dining out, half the experience is the services, which was totally lacking here. Frankly I wish there was something lower than one star that I could rate Penderbrook.
Terrible course. The condition of this course has deteriorated significantly over the years. Dead piles of sod are left all over the course. Several tee boxes have literally no grass with patches of mud and crab crass. Many greens have new sod laid around it and its completely dead. The staff is constantly driving the course turning sprinklers on/off throughout your round. We played through active sprinklers on at least 5-6 holes. The cart girl doesnt even drive a beverage cart. She had coolers with bungy cords and didnt accept credit cards. Only saw the cart once through the round. If you want to play a dog track and be disappointed, this is your course for a nice $60, you can get all the dead sod and sprinklers you can handle. DONT PLAY HERE.
Pace of play.
Course needs better maintenance. There were huge cracks on the fairway. The layout of the holes is great though.
Excellent course for a good price . New management have significantly improved the course. The restaurant also has been upgraded with a 3 star chef .
I dont understand how come people can give 5-star rating to Penderbook recently. I took my daughter and her boyfriend to play there yesterday (September 3, 2016) and Penderbrook became one of the worst golf courses I have ever played. I used to play there in a weekly basis from 2008 to 2011 because my golf buddy loves the challenging layout and it is in a convenient location for both of us. The condition was okay back then. I was shocked yesterday when I saw crabgrass everywhere. It is sad.
Furniture a bit old, but is a nice space for small groups. Has a kitchen and small eating area with a fridge and a microwave. Has Wi-Fi. Ample parking, in a nice area.
Great place! Friendly staff and some of the best golf in the suburbs you can ask for, want to challenge yourself? Well youre in luck, try to go at least 3 holes without losing a ball OR your temper! Let fly on some of their larger fairways with your biggest driver or heck, just let fly with a stream of profanity as you once again shank an easy approach shot. Want to unwind after a bad round? Grab a cold beer at the bar or perhaps try to hit one of the thousands of geese on the course with a well placed shot on whats most likely your last 4$ ball after 8 holes! Either way, golfing here is a magical and enticing experience, and remember, if your blood pressure isnt through the roof, are you really golfing?
Played Penderbrook Golf Course 30 September 2012. Great short, but challenging, course layout. Fairways and greens were in great shape.Exceptionally slow play made for a very long round on a Sunday morning. Compared to the Reston National course which I played the previous day, I enjoyed this course more and the rates were about $40.00 different. Both course had the LOUDEST golf carts I had ever heard. and in need of mufflers or something! Would avoid weekend play here, because it was very crowded. I recommend this scenic course, if you are in the area.
Too many homes are bothering me and bad course information.
Course needs some work. Apparently under new management which will hopefully eliminate some of rude staff.
Good 18 hole golf course for the price, especially with the Commonwealth Card. Presently it is getting upgraded, but it is quite playable
I really hate how these guys don’t value great customer service. Getting in, the lady at the counter was snobbish and annoying. I don’t understand why some people don’t take their jobs seriously. Don’t think I’ll ever come back here.
Penderbrrok is a beautiful 18 hole course. It provides well priced greens fees, challegeing holes and great staff. I have been playing this course 2-4 times a month for that past year and can say that it is the best course for the money around. In the past year the course has been well cared for and it appears that the course is going to continue to improve. The club house has just recently changed its menu and I have got to say the food is great! All around great experience.
Great customer service!! Wonderful food!!
Charlie is the best manager. Family belongs to wgcc and Westwood but I still go to p brook to see Chuck
Small fast greens and tight fairways . Good deals on rounds if you search for them. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Beautiful development.
Just a good course for a relaxing game. Oh, and they give you two beers with your round.
Course conditions could be improved upon.
A decent course at a reasonable price.
Very nice place to live and enjoy
Beautiful, well maintain.
Spacious and clean
Nice area
Tremendous
Excellent
Good
OK course for cheap...
Demanding from the blues
So So
On the come up.
Clean and beautiful
Nice course.
Mediocre at best. Rough was poorly kept. No halfway house or cart doing rounds meant it was impossible to eat or drink anything for the length of the full 18 holes. Cheapish but still not worth it.
Great placr
Good course
Poorly kept course
Good Pool
Probably one of the worst courses in the county. Poorly maintained and the people it draws play very slowly. No Marshall so no control. Waste of time and money, they should close this one and either turn it into a park or build more homes.
