Visiting friends in the area we took the one hour tour of Carter Mansion, cost for adult $8. Worth every cent and more. Gorgeous 1700 era home of the John and son Landon Carter family.Tennessee history literally started here. I never knew this area used to be part of North Carolina...and struggled to become its own state of Franklin. Our park guide Taylor was knowledgeable and engaging. His expertise of the era and local history made for a phenomenal tour.I recommend him 100%.Tour took place during social distancing / CDC guidelines and was safely enforced. Masks, 6 feet distancing and limited group size to up to 6 people worked very well. Thank you Taylor.Beautiful grounds, well kept with a large kitchen/herb garden behind house. Everything from Echinacea to lemon balm. Gorgeous.Watauga River runs directly behind it with an easy path to take. Family gravesite dating to 1700s on site. The mansion is stunning in its preservation. A must see.

The Carter Mansion is step back in time to 1780. It shows what folks on the frontier could accomplish. Highly recommend visiting during the Christmas holidays.

Restored house with significant history for TN. The guide, Chad, was great with interesting facts and stories about the Carter family and historical traditions in general.

Nice building to see but you can not enter it. The old graveyards on the property are probably the best part.

Oldest frame house in TN. Want to go back and visit inside as they were not open when we stopped by. Lots of pre-american history as the land was inhabited by cherokee. King George III had put the proclamation line of 1763 on the eastern side of the Appalachian mountains so the Carter famililies were in violation of the king and encroaching on natives land. Great addition to visiting sycamore sholes state park and fort watauga.

Super cool to visit! We use to live in Elizabethton right down the road from this house! They do tours and sometimes offer coffee outside! This place was super neat and very interesting!

Filmed a YouTube video there. Very nice. Family Cemetery is just like 40 or 50 yards from it.

The drive up front Knoxville was great, my family and I enjoyed it very much. We got off of I-81 @ exit 23 and went through Greenville. Which was more scenic than the interstate. The 2 stars are for the Watauga Fort and Visitors Center, it was nice. They have done a good job of replicating the original Fort. However from there we headed to the other main reason we went to Elizabethton, to see the Carter mansion which was closed. And the fact that there was no signage to let you know that it was by tour only or the schedule of said tour, (which we only found out by calling the State Park office) left us disappointed to say the least. All in all as a family we enjoyed our time together in Elizabethton, as tourists not so much.

Remember, this was a mansion in the late 1700s. Still very cool to see. Watauga river runs behind the house, cemetery on site.

What a beautiful piece of history so well preserved. It is mentioned in the books by authors Michael Manuel and Larry C. Timbs, Fish Springs Beneath the Surface. That and the sequel, Justice for Toby, are must reads for anyone interested in the local history or Carter County.

I am a travel writer for National Park Planner and I visited the Carter Mansion in May 2014. The Carter Mansion is an official stop on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, part of the National Park System. The Carter Mansion is run by the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and is located at 1013 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Built around 1780 by John Carter and his son Landon, the house is the oldest frame house in Tennessee (North Carolina at the time). Carter was a member of the Watauga Association, a government formed in 1772 to govern the settlers of the Watauga and Nolichunky (near present day Nashville) settlements. At the time this was Indian land given to the Cherokee by the British in 1763. By forming the Watauga Association, Carter and his fellow settlers, in effect, became the very first colonists in America to form an independent government, superseding those who went on to form the United States of America. While John Carter fought in the Revolution as the commander of Fort Watauga, I do not know if he fought at Kings Mountain. Carter County is named for his son, Landon, and Elizabethton is named for his wife, Elizabeth. He died in 1781 from smallpox. The house is open from Memorial Day to Labor day at 2 PM for a one hour tour. For the rest of the year, the house is open each Tuesday from 12 PM to 3 PM. However, before making travel plans, be sure to contact the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park for information. I did not see information specific to the Carter Mansion operating hours, so you may have to call the park. For information on all of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail sites, visit National Park Planner (npplan).
