If you want to get away this place is great. It offers year round camping, its still relatively close to El Paso if you need to go some shopping, but still far enough away that the scenic views are breathtaking. There is hiking and mountain climbing opportunities. The hike up is a bit steep but they have chains to help you up and back down. Perfect experience on an overcast day.

If it was possible to give 10 stars, I would. This a beautiful location, almost other-worldly. An experience you will never forget. The climbing is fun if you want to climb the rocks, the nature is unique and special, and the cave and petroglyphs give you the feeling of ancient holiness. Highly recommend visiting Hueco Tanks for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Definitely worth the short detour off I10!!! Strongly recommend this as a sole destination or side trip on the way through El Paso. So many enjoyable aspects: Crawling in the well-traversed cave to see the painted faces on the rock ceiling, endless bouldering around the huecos and mini-rock climbing, hiking paths, the archeology significance. My visit was in late September and weather was ideal! The park ranger Elizabeth was so pleasant and helpful. She directed us how to get the most out of our visit. Definitely check out (with your ID) the laminated map if you plan to see the cave paintings. It was essential to find the most direct route. I want to return again soon!!

We are here visiting from Tennessee, our young soldier. We went out there on a Sunday. Sign said park is full and a ranger with a long braid graying hair, met us to reinforce that info. Said we could wait, but time waiting may vary, once someone comes out, can go in. My grandson said ok and pulled around to parking area on other side of road since there was a large RV hauling a car parked on that side. We were meeting another young soldier who was already here waiting on us. The RV was let in before any vehicles exited. A couple of other cars pulled up and parked where the RV had been parked. When two vehicles pulled out, my grandson pulled around to see if we could go in. This was the ensuing conversation:Ranger:. You said you werent waitingGrandson:. No sir, I didnt say that and pulled around to waitRanger:. Well, you needed to be parked on this side to wait to go inGrandson: You didnt tell me thatRanger: Well, you have to wait behind these two vehicles nowNeed useful info on website, and better Representatives for visitors. Especially for our troops! My Grandson said he wont go back there. Wish he would, but he now has a very unfortunate memory of this attempt at visiting a place that should provide beauty and relaxation.

This is a gem of a park. The campground is small (20 sites) but the sites (water and electrical hook-ups) are set up well and are spaced fairly far apart for privacy. There bathrooms are quite adequate, and there is a dump station available. The main draw here is hiking to view ancient rock art. There are self- or ranger led hikes available. To minimize the impact, the number of hikers allows each day is limited, so a call ahead concerning availability would be prudent.Support your National and State parks.

Hueco Tanks became one of my favorite place. When i saw those big mountains of rocks for the first time, I just couldnt believe it. How did it get there? We hiked for 3 hours on and around the first mountain (you need a guide to go around the other ones) and the views on top of the mountain are so incredible. Anyway, we decided we would go again and camp there to be able to see the whole site.

This is a review for their RV/ camping part of the park. Its sort of odd reservations can only be made for a total of three nights. Thats it. And the campground was virtually a ghost town.We stayed in site #1, which while ok in the cooler temps of April would not be as good as other campsites that have some shade in the warmer months.Exceedingly quiet and private, we used this as our base to hike around all that Hueco Tanks offers. We went to Hueco in mid-December to start outdoor bouldering - we hired a guide that was certified to take us to the locked off portions of the park. All of the paths through Hueco are beautiful, whether doing some light scrambling or going through rock mazes and brush. The bouldering itself was challenging but rewarding. Where we could climbing up to V3/4 in a gym, we were maxing our at V0/V1 here, so prepare to be humbled.

Really interesting Texas State Park. There are nearly 3,-000 rock arts dating from about 2,000 years to the early 20th century. we stayed in the campground. There are 20 sites many with electric and water. Price for extrications site is $22 plus $7 per day per person. If you have the Texas State Park pass the per person fee is waived. They strictly limit the number of people and where they can go. If you are camping you will need to get the day pass to hike any of the trails. Many of the trails you will need a guide. Suggest to book a guided tour to get the full experience.

The landscape here is very unique when compared to many national parks. This is a really fun place to go hiking (speaking to beginner hikers). This is not a place I would take a small child, but for a group of friends who want to spend a good 3 hours hiking and walking around a rocky environment, this is an awesome place. Its $7 per person to get in, and open from 0800 in the morning to 1800 every day. You have to watch an intro video from 1970 to get in, which is kinda annoying. The park itself is nice, a lot of good spots for pictures and good hiking trails. I went during the fall, I think the spring would be the best time to go. 2/3 of the park is off limits without a guide. I went on a Sunday and it wasnt too busy, maybe 20 people there. There was a lot of graffiti which is unfortunate, but in all a good place to spend a few hours.

Terrible experience other than the many animals I saw and great rock formations. I reported it to the sheriffs office.

This is a beautiful hiking area with a vibrant history. There is an abundance of wildlife watching opportunities, and a unique topography. A wealth of information can be ingested here, making this a great sitr for amateur scientists, ecologists, and also for those who enjoy picnicing in the great outdoors. There are walking and hiking areas with picnic tables, and there are restrooms available for public use at the state park entrance. You need to watch a video before you go on a self-guided tour, which explains about the sacred historic connections Hueco Tanks has with local Native American tribes. It explains not to touch any of the petroglyphs and which parts of the park are off limits for conservation reasons. There are special rules for taking pets with you, so be sure to inquire if you wish to bring along any of your furry companions. Since this is a popular destination for beginner mountain climbers as well as hikers and campers, this park can quickly reach its max capacity. It is advisable to call head to the park rangers and make sure there is room for you and your party before heading out.

Great hiking experiences. Too bad so many people have felt the need to leave their own mark on the rocks. Some of the graffiti is from the 1800s, which is kind of cool. If you are in to climbing this is a unique place to enjoy that. If you are just into hiking and seeing some really awesome (and rare in North America) cave paintings, this is the place for you. It also has some cool geological aspects to it so if you are a rock nerd you can get some enjoyment out of it as well. Make sure you call ahead to check the schedule because they only allow so many people in the park at a time and you have to watch the intro video. I would also recommend going out to the road at night for stargazing. The park isn’t open at night but there is a pull off by a tree and a bench where you can enjoy the night sky.

I was expecting to just run through here quickly on the way from Carlsbad to El Paso. Its actually not possible to do so. Because of the decades of vandalism that has gone on here, they make you pay $7 a head and then watch a 15-minute video and a short presentation before letting you wander around. Only about 75% of the park is accessible without a guide. All of the rock paintings we were able to access were defaced or completely faded. The reason that I would still recommend to go is the Chain Trail, where there are chains anchored into the rock that you can use to pull yourself up to the top of the rocks (moderate hike, not as scary as it sounds). Once up on top of the rocks you can walk around freely. The views are nice and there are cool spaces to wander around in.

You can see half of the park via self guided tour and the other half (including more pictographs and hueco tanks) if you take the guided tour. Guided tours are available Wednesday thru Sunday. Only 70 people after allowed on the mountains at any one time so you must check in and out with park personnel so others can enter during busy times. Camping is allowed for a fee. Its always a concern of mine when the first sign you see is Watch for snakes. If you are into climbing then this is probably a great place. The place is manned with rangers like Fort Knox is with security. Supposedly, this is to prevent damage to the historical pictographs of Native American Indians. Honesty, there is a lot more graffiti than one would expect for the number of rangers on duty. There is also a lot of trash. The campsites are nice (water and electric). There is a full service grocery store about four miles west of the campground called Montana Vista. The park locks the gates at 7pm.

An oasis in the desert. It has very interesting rock formations and Native American cave art. Its an easy drive from El Paso and worth taking a morning to go see.Know before you go:You will be required to watch an informational video and lecture about the parks history and the importance of Leave No Trace. It will take about half an hour. You may only access about 1/3 of the park unless you choose a guided tour. The guided tour is not a good choice for small children, unless you plan to have them in a carrier, as it takes several hours. The self guided paths are not steep, but are narrow in many places and not well marked.Bring bug spray, as there is standing water and plenty of mosquitoes, and the gift shop does not sell any. There are also plenty of rattle snakes in this area, so stay aware. Also, it is best to go early, when they first open, if you you are going during summer.
