What a lovely place to visit. The docent what a lovey lady who regaled us with the life of Joel Chandler Harris. What a great story teller she is. My husband read these stories as a child living in England, so to be able to see this history was fabulous. He is seventy plus, what excitement. Well worth the visit.
It was a wonderful experience, giving me a whole new appreciation for Uncle Remus. Learning the whole story and how it came to be was eye opening for me. This history needs to be preserved and taught to all children and adults! Thank you for a great visit.
Went there to get a Song of the South DVD and bought four to give for Christmas gifts. I havent seen this movie since 1972 when I was overseas in service. Truly an American classic!!! PS: enjoyed meeting Mrs Georgia Smith.
Great little place with loads of history. The main part of the museum is constructed of two slave cabins put together. The real treat is Ms. Georgia who works there Friday and Saturday, she is a wealth of history and a very funny happy person. She is an 80 year old. black woman who has worked there for 40 years and she was a delight to hear her stories and knowledge of “uncle Remus”. It is the only place I know where you can actually get a copy of the Song of the South film that Disney created. We were passing throug and I am so glad we stopped.
Meh. Id be more interested in learning the stories of the folks who lived in the houses that are placed on the property. If youre into history, this might not be for you. If youre into the stories of the author it is memorializing, then this is a great place for you.
Amazing visit with the attendant who was born and raised in this town period she told so many amazing stories of life growing up, into her history. A must see!
Georgia is a remarkable woman with many stories to tell and a big heart! Well worth stopping and seeing the museum and meeting Georgia!
This is a wonderful museum! You cant take photos inside so I cant give you that, but I can recommend it if you are anywhere near. They are very knowledgeable and give a great history on the life of Joel Chandler Harris
Remember days gone by when you go here its beautiful didnt get any photos but wish I had
We had a wonderful time and spent over an hour talking with the museum docents. We learned so much about Joel Chandler Harris and the Uncle Remus Stories. I especially enjoyed comparing childhood memories with Miss Georgia ( she turns 80 next month making her just 2 months younger than me). We ordered 2 copies of Song of the South and bought a book of Uncle Remus stories. Only negative was the rest room facilities. Still I have to admit I. Had a wonderfultime
Very interesting visit 5 dollars each 10 to 5 bring a mask. Such a great place cant wait to go back!!!!
I really liked the museum. It was fascinating to hear the historical significance of the stories and the author. The curator Mrs. Georgia was a hoot! She is very knowledgeable and quite a captivating person!
Love this museum.. always enjoyed reading Joel Chandler Harris works.my children grew up listening to Bear rabbit stories this town is full of history and should not be missed.. the lady that works in this museum is unbelievable.. I could listen to her talk about life in the south all day..she really brought history back to life... I will be back
Great literary history on Black cultural folk stories.
I loved the Brier Rabbit stories coming up as a kid. Dont throw me in that briar patch. This place is full of history and just so cozy and nostalgic. Great place for photo ops. It has a nice little garden that you can just go out and relax in. The volunteer running the museum the day we were there was just so sweet and so knowledgeable and you could tell that she really had a passion for what she was doing.
Awesome piece of history. Loved it.
My daughter and I found it utterly charming. The local volunteers made you feel right at home and had great stories to tell and obvious love for the little museum they run. Enjoyed it enough to plan to return.
Mrs. Georgia was a true lady of the south. She was very knowledgeable about the history of Uncle Remus and we had a great time sharing stories of Uncle Remus and our life experiences. I would highly recommend this for a most stop on anyones travels. Keep the love and GOD bless all who made our stay special.
Its a fascinating stop (stay 30 min), best known to a my generation which grew up on Uncle Wiggly stories. A very pleasant place providing a piece of nostalgia.... somewhat politically incorrect these days.
I visited this cabin many years ago. Now it is an even more protected and preserved than ever before. If you remember the Brer Rabbit stories and want to visit where they began this is the place! This is one of those little out of the way places that make traveling by car worth the time!!!
Plenty of history in this small museum. Ms. Georgia is an excellent and passionate story and history teller!
I remember the Uncle Remus stories from my childhood. I learned a lot of information about the author. The guide was very informative.
(Heres a secret tip for you: if you want to see Song of the South which has been suppressed by Disney, you can buy the DVD here.) I saw it as a child and loved it. The songs, the mixed live and animation, Uncle Remus. The first movie in which an African American won an Oscar, and well deserved.Disney has refused to release it on the grounds that it is pretty darned racist. And it *is*. And thats worth a debate. This movie should be watched.According to Song of the South reality, rich white folks suffer terribly with marital difficulties and with being forced to live in mansions and wear velvet suits and lace collars and being made fun of by the other kids. But the black folks are right there, waiting in their unheated, unplumbed shacks to love the white folks and make everything okay again. So I think its a very realistic and happy story. That said, James Baskett as Uncle Remus is wonderful. He was the first person to act with animated characters, and he was amazing. The music is wonderful. And if we suppress history - in this case the presented image of the roles in mid-20th century America of blacks and whites, we forget where we came from, and the work we need to do in our assumptions and attitudes. Song of the South should be mandatory viewing!
Nice people, handy cap entrance and parking. Good location.
Such a great experience!Miss Georgia was a wonderful person and storyteller.Interesting facts behind the history of the stories of Uncle Remus.
Wonderful museum. Miss Georgia, the docent, was very knowledgeable.
Amazing landscaping. Museum curator is knowledgeable. Brer Rabbits grave is located here. Really interesting history associated with the stories and location. Less than an hour stop if you are in the area!
Eye opening and a historical look at Uncle Remus, black culture and the antebellum southern culture of that time. Charming and a must visit if in the area.
Weve been here about 3 times over the years . Even though the exhibits dont change . Ive learned something different every time . The staff are wonderful there . Its a small museum . Spent awywhere from a half-hour to 2 hours each time depending upon whose there
Georgia the museum guide is wonderful. She has some great stories and truly loves her job, her hometown, and people in general. The museum is truly a gem and if you are ever near Eatonton you should get off the bypass and go downtown to the museum.
We went on a Friday and had the pleasure of meeting Georgia. She is fantastic and full of knowledge.
Good place to visit. Doesnt take long. A good piece of Georgia history. Museum docent was great.
Having grown up with the retelling of the Uncle Remus stories I was thrilled to find this little history gem. Its small but worth a visit if youre a fan of the old folktales.
Awesome just... awesome
Very informative and entertaining, Mrs Georgia is a National Treasure !!! Highly recommend !!!
Read the stories as a child was interests in to see where he grew up
Great local history and stories of the city and its people.
Awesome little place to visit in town that has been there forever. They get new trinkets in all the time so its always worth checking.
Sat and listened to the history of the cabin, the author, and the characters. Enjoyed the artifacts.
Didnt get to see the inside of the museum, they were closed. But just walking the outside has me eager to come back.
Not as interesting as I would have thought it to be before I decided to take a visit there . I was disappointed that they wouldnt let me carry my small dog into the museum which is really just an old reconstructed slave log cabin. I even offered to hold her in my arms but they wouldnt allow that. So, I had to put her in my car while I took a quick tour of the museum. The docent could have been more helpful.
Absolutely can not say enough about this Museum. Personally I feel Ms. Georgia made the entire experience. She was so knowledgeable about the history of Eatonton GA. Her stories and explanation of everything was an experience I will NEVER forget. Would recommend to everyone.......definitely worth the visit.
Calm & pleasant as usual. No sign of Kindness Rocks.
It was boring just wood carvings and rusty old farm equipment. And i would not consider it a museum. And there where no pictures allowed in the cabins. My honest opinion. And they had the word racist in the description hope no children asked about it.
Everyone should check out Uncle Remies. Great History here.
The lady was really nice and helped out a lot.
Hadnt been there since i was 12 and now was able to bring my little girl and teach her a little bit about history.
Song of the South is a story that warms the heart. The museum was a treasure to find many years ago. Glad to see its still open. With new wood carvings of the animals, the kids loved it.
Lots of history and we loved Georgia! She was a fount of information so friendly and made our visit memorable. Told us all about the history of the area and where the Uncle Remus stories originated from. Very knowledgeable and helpful.
Driving through Eatonton I saw a sign for the museum and stopped to pick up a childhood favorite book, Song of the South. Who doesn’t love that trickster Br’er Rabbit!Fun find.
Great history! The front desk staff will happily tell you the story of uncle Remus and how it all came to be. Great place to check out if your in town
Small kids will love the outside characters. Makes for great photo opportunities. Older kids and adults will appreciate the history, documents and pictures inside.
Always love going in here at least once a year!!!! There are picnic tables outside, wood carved bear, raccoon, rabbit. Flower gardens.
Buildings are OK. Museum guide (Georgia) was the best. Stories and history if the town. She made it all worth while and I hope others visiting get to meet and talk to her.
Sad to see this place so run down took our children years ago and loved it but when we went back to visit we were sadden to see grass up to your knees and just rubbed down!!
It is awesome
Just a little something to remember Joel Chandler Harris, great wrighter.

I so enjoyed Ms. Georgia, she made our visit so fascinating with all the stories and history she knew. So sad most never see or understand the true history and how important this little southern towns were.
Brought back many memories. Quaint.
Friendly staff and will tell you everything on the history of the books and origin
Was in town for work, so on the weekend, we decided to get out and do a little sightseeing. Had several things on our itinerary, the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatontown was by far my fave! Really enjoyed it!
Small but very informative museum. Great history.
Love, love
What a fantastic find. Thank you to lady that spent so much time with us. Cant wait to watch the DVD we bought The Song of the South. Will bring back childhood memories.
Beautiful grounds, friendly hosts, and plenty of history on display in the small cabin. Lots of story books on display for purchase.
Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah!!!!!!! Theres an actual museum dedicated to Uncle Remus!!! Took a look around the gift shop area. It costs $5 to get in to see the actual museum. I didnt have time to go inside. They do sell DVD copies of the movie which is really hard to find.
Brer rabbit museum that has the sweetest ladiesto tell you all about the old south.
A true hidden gem. For those who remember hearing the tales of Brer Rabbit and his friends, this is a MUST SEE museum. The museum if 3 buildings, 2 of them are original slave cabins that were transported there and put back to together and the 3rd part of the building is an actual wing of the plantation where the original Uncle Remus stories were written. Original memorabilia and artifacts.
Wonderful experience! Docent taught us so much history!
The tour guide said the word, RACIST about the author. Inappropriate behavior.
I like the storyline of brer rabbit..
Great place to visit, very special!!
