Great small museum that highlights the industrial history of the Lehigh Valley. Take a ride on the mule drawn canal boat. Enjoy a walk on the trails. Good place for kids.
If you like history looking at the way people worked and lived go take a ride on a canal boat. The narration was very good.
The canal ride was really fun and the park is beautiful. We were having a lovely time until we went into the museum( that we paid for) and came across volunteer Pete. This man threw a literal fit because my mother who has a chronic respiratory disease wasnt wearing a mask, despite being told by her specialist NOT to wear one and despite the fact that we informed the staff before we went in. Pete was EXTREMELY rude and threw such a fit that Pam, the volunteer manager, kicked us out. Pam stated that she had to look out for her volunteers and their safety despite the fact that Pete kept sniffing and had very watery eyes and I watched Pete touch his fave 5 times in less than 30 seconds and then proceeded to touch things around him without sanitizing anything. When I asked Pete his name he got in my face to give it to me. He was very aggressive and tried to cause a scene. While I understand there has to be a certain level of safety, my mother was more at risk from contracting covid or something else from Pete and others in there than they were from her. Also I would like to add that no one else had a problem but Pete. Pam didnt even have the courtesy to offer us a refund. Not too sure if Pete and Pam realize that it is highly illegal to discriminate again people with medical disabilities, but you would think that a state run museum would educate their employees better. Bottom line is go enjoy the boat ride but if you have any kind of medical issues avoid the museum and especially Pete. Pam and Pete have definitely given this beautiful place a bad look and I will never suggest anyone visit the museum and have to experience the rudeness and illegal discrimination we had to experience.
Very informative about the local history, I learned something new today. The canal boat rides leave at 1, 2, and 3 PM and it is a must if you are in the area. Im not a history buff but it was pretty cool to see the museum and the exibits, almost all of them are most all hands on. Great park for kids to play(park is free) and a great walking trail.
The workers are knowledgeable of the local history, which I enjoy. There are covid restrictions. The price is reasonable and it is kid friendly.
Got stuck on canal but our crew got us back safe! Always an adventure when Mr. Shannon and I go on an adventure
The canal boat tour has an excellent history narrator! But she is not kid friendly and she talks non stop without any chance for people to take a picture or appreciate the scenery. The museum is very small. But the playground was great. Has a zip line! Playground is free canal boat and museum is 21 for an adult and a kid. The ice cream shop is good priced: $2 for a king cone! :)
Very informative. Volunteers interesting and knowledgeable.
The canal boat tour was closed due to Covid, but the trails were still enjoyable.
Its open now you can vist and enjoy your time
My family attended the Haunted Hugh Moore Park event. It was well organized, the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. The stories along the ghost walk were very well scripted and acted. I especially want to commend the actors who played Mr. Paterson and the Headless Horseman. Mr. P was simply an excellent actor and storyteller! The HH was so humorous! He made my 4 year old son, who was nervous at first, laugh. My son even ran back to give him a hug like he was Mickey Mouse!!! Oh... and all the snacks! Yum!!! Well definitely be back for this event next year!
Wonderful piece of history. Took our summer school kids for a field trip. Lots of hands on activities to keep them busy. They enjoyed learning what it was like for kids their age to grow up on a canal boat. Fun park for the kids to enjoy as well as picnic tables to enjoy lunch.
Fantastic place to visit! The museum staff are all very knowledgeable and eager to talk with you! We learned a lot and wished we could have spent more time. It is a great place to visit with kids. Lots of exhibits that will interest them and involve them.
Canal museum had some great displays!
I really enjoyed the guide boat ride, and found the history just fascinating.
Interesting small museum exhibiting long forgotten, although quite recent, history of the area
Great experience seeing how the PA Canal system worked and got coal from the mountains to market. Very well done.
Really nice walk along the canal. Museum is great for local canal history.
This was not the place I expected and that was a good thing.I was expecting a museum covering the history of the D&L canal in a more adult appealing format. You know what I mean: Oral histories, detailed information, and plenty of artifacts.Well they had the artifacts but the bulk of the exhibits were for kids and emphasized hands on involvement. Building bridges, canal routes, waterways to show flow, and quite a bit else. Now we went in the late fall so the canal boat ride was not running then but it was still worth the price of entry. All in all, a very child friendly museaum experience.
I visited today we took a long walk thru the trail...kids can enjoy playing in the playground
Took the mule-drawn boat ride. The guide was interesting and knowlegable. Will go again!
Wonderful little museum hands on for children. Staff was friendly and attentive and interacted with my children helping them learn. The canal ride was not just a fun ride but also very informational.
Great place to visit. The museum I hands on so bring the kids.
Best island park in the valley..has a great seat up for kids with a extra large zip line and a bike park...not to mention canal boat ride and spectacular views of the Lehigh river
Great place to take the family on an educational trip. You can do all the activities in about half a day.
Really interesting historical sight
This was a great experience for my family!
Great park by the canal. You can have family reunions, outdoor wedding there. Pavillion has to be rented. Had electricity, charcoal bbq. You can see the boat being pulled by big mules like back in time. Just a nice place out in nature to be.
So friendly and very knowledgeable
Very informative and interesting.
Really cool place, very helpful people. Cant wait to get back for the canal boat ride
Tons of history here. Also, there are Mules. If you are not into history, go for the Mules.
We plan on visiting next Spring to get a better view of the park.
Amazing place to take the family.
Fun place and very informative.
Experienced as part of school field trip. A lot of interesting facts.
We love here. Great combo of shade and sun. Perfect place for a reunion or birthday party with kids.
Interesting place to learn about history of canal in the area.
Not as nice as it was when growing up only 4 miles from there
Great place too take the kids for the day
Alot of playgrounds and cool mule pulling boats
Very nice museum if you like large boats and canals it explains about the coal mining coming from Pennsylvania and the problems they had going to Philly with their coal
Family friendly . and people freindly . allways sunny there .
Very friendly people. Great displays. A lot of interactive things for kids.
My children love playing here. So calm and quiet.
We signed up for a dinner cruise on the canal boat, and it was a great time! Our tickets also included admission to the museum. We boarded the boat at 5:20 pm, and we left the dock promptly at 5:30 pm. The mules pulled us to lock #47 while a speaker shared the history of Bethlehem Steel and the canals. After we exited the lock and they turned the boat around, they started serving dinner, and the entertainer played live music. We arrived back at the dock at 8 pm.A note about dinner. You sit on benches on the top of the boat covered with a canopy. Dinner is served buffet-style down below. You walk down the steps, get a cafeteria tray, plastic plates and silverware, drinks, and dessert. The caterers were Culinary Experts from the Allentown Fairground Markets. The theme of the dinner was Eastern European since that was the ethnicity of many of the canal boat operators. The food was excellent! The menu included the following: Pepper Slaw,Stuffed Cabbages with Rice and Ground Beef and Tomato Sauce, Chicken Paprikas with Buttered Egg Noodles (All White Meat Chicken Breast), Hungarian Potato & Cheese Pierogi Sautéed with Butter and Onions, Broccoli Florets in Butter Sauce with Fire Roasted Peppers, and Assorted Kiffles. After you have your food, you walk back up the stairs, sit on your bench with the tray on your lap, and eat. They provide assistance if you cant do the stairs and it is BYOB. Its a little crude, and they want it that way so that you can see that this was not a glamorous life living and working on a canal boat. Next time, well bring a cooler with our own water. Since it was so hot, we wore shorts.Reservations and prepayment are required, and it books up fast. We were there on a 100 degree August evening, and it was steamy! It is a rain/ shine event. If there is lightning or stores, they will not take the boat out and will move the event inside the museum.
