Lots of great information and cool things to look at. Definitely a lot of history in the building. Gift shop was small but nice. The older lady was a little rude with little kids. Could interact with different items and watch movies also. It was free to visit and hours were great cause open tell at least 8 p.m. if I remember right.
This place is super neat. Cool place to learn about all things great lakes
Informative center for people who may love history of some great ships, renown captains and related People, their stories and yes the engineering behind bridge that gets raised right next to it.
I went during the winter months it was cold but I was warm and fuzzy inside enjoying the hospitality of locals food and drink
Excellent place for the whole family! Tons of maritime information and artifacts. And best of all its free!!!!
Such a pleasant education. Very clean and well kept. The admission was also Free. Great experience.
Awesome place to watch the ships come through. Ranger who lead the tour seemed new, but she still gave an informative tour. The museum has quite a bit of information, though not much as far as hands on activities for little learners. Gift shop prices were good. We parked for free across the bridge and just walked over. There is a free trolley that will take you around the downtown area. Bring your own food because all the places around prey on tourists.
We discovered this place casually, just walking around on the Canal Park lake walk. It is a small museum (free admission) that explains the evolution of the port and how boats and the port changed over time. Very nice and interactive, kids love it, particularly the recreation of an old ship bridge. There are a lot of educational program showing how things work (e.g. Soo Lock).
Very interesting place to check the maritime history of the Great Lakes. The exhibits were great and do really show the story behind them. There is a nice gift shop too. The center is located in a park area that you can seat and relax enjoying the view of either the lake or Duluth.
Our favorite place to visit when in Duluth. The history here is always fun for the kids and they provide a schedule for the ships coming and going. Bathrooms are available to the public thought they get busy, just like the whole park area does. It’s the nature of canal park.
If youre in Duluth, this is a must-see stop! This FREE museum is packed full of maritime history, displays, and information. There are hands on displays that the kids will love too. As a bonus, the museum is located inside the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center which is a fun and fascinating outdoor park. Walk out along the long canal and watch the freighters come into harbor only feet away from you the ngo under the aerial lift bridge. Walk out to the lighthouse at the end of the canal. Throw stones on the beach and find a spot to feed the seagulls. Fun for the whole family. Lots of restaurants nearby too!
Great museum in a beautiful area. Small, yet informative and interesting. Cute little gift shop. It is a must visit if you go to Duluth and Canal Park.
Co-located with old Army Corps of Engineers building, this small museum has no admission charge ($3 to park for 3 hours... Good for walking around Canal Park and local eateries & shops, TOO) ...packs in a lot of Duluth Harbor and Great Lakes shipping history - VERY interesting! I enjoyed this very much as a kid and even more as an adult!
Great little music full of maritime hostory and displays.
Beautiful area, we saw the bridge go up and several boats go through including a ship. Clean, great museum.
Excellent exhibits inside. Bring the kids. Clean bathrooms. And great sightings outside at the lift bridge! We saw the largest ship that comes into port...the Paul R. Tregurtha...1000 ft long! Also a stop for us during the tall ships event! We once watched a tall ship sail out from under the lift bridge so silently unfurling its sails...it was amazing!
Lots of history. Very informative.
It was a great experience. Learning about all the ships. It’s a dangerous lake to take a ride on.To many people died.
Beautiful place to bring family, so much to do
Next to the Duluth lift bridge it is a good place to stop and review the Lake Superior history and facts. A good learning moment while you wait for a ship to pass through under the bridge. Great people watching and the summertime ice cream next door at Grandmas!
Fun spot to meander through shipping history. Worth the time & free.
Very informational. A vital historical resource
We had a lot of fun checking out everything! We started in the basement at the gift shop & worked our way up. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We live in the area & this is the first time we actually took the time to explore the museum. It was worth it! We learned a lot of neat things! The day we went was pretty busy and the air was thick making it a little hard to breathe. Get some air circulation and you would get 5s easy. We will definitely be back when the Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit is completed.
The best Museum in the Midwest this Museum has it all and more I always visit this Museum Everytime I visit Duluth and more than once a day too it is in a great location right near most shops food places right next door to the aerial lift bridge and more too it is the best Museum I ever been to in the last 33 years
Nice museum to visit while watching ships cross the lift bridge. There is a free museum tours, which unfortunately we didnt have time to join. The museum is free & informative.
Im always seem to be able to find something new here. Its interesting and its history and its Duluth. I like to go down here to just relax and soak up so much of what Duluth is and has been down here. So much diversity every time I come down. I love coming here.
A small museum right next to the aerial bridge. It was cool to see parts of the inside of the massive ships and the history of shipping on Lake Superior. You can plan to be there when they lift the bridge and see a ship go thru!
It is a great place to learn most of the history of the wonderful Lake Superior. I encourage to go here if youre ever in Duluth to visit. Beautiful scenery everywhere you go.
Such a neat place...we took our 13 and 16 year old with us and they thought theyd be bored, but the walking tour, combined with the lighthouse, bridge and other attractions held their attention. I saw a lot of older people visiting, but it is a great place to learn about maritime history and the Duluth area.
What a neat place to visit in Duluth. Be sure to check the schedule, posted or online, to see ships pass through.
Awesome little center. Some interactive bits for kids and visitors
Very informative awsome models of the different types of boats
If you visit Duluth, you gotta stop by. Tons of history and hands on things to do. Check the daily schedule of arrivals and departures to watch the big ore boats roll thru the harbor. Great food and shopping close by too! A must IMHO!
An interesting place to review the history/geography of the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Superior. There’s a schedule of when the lakers (the cargo ships) are scheduled to arrive and depart, and there are models of lakers inside the museum as well. As the ship Walter J. McCarthy Jr. went under the bridge, a narrated history of the vessel was provided by the museum. The museum is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This place is always amazing and interesting at the same time.. I go at least 2 times a year..
Great informative visit. Many points of interest for all ages.
Not only is this a nice clean park but I left my wallet in the bathroom so I called after hours and the next morning they called back and said the cleaners found it and turned it in
Awesome place to go!
Very cool place to see the history of Lake Superior. Very cool to see the bridge rise and see the HUGE ships come through.
Alot of great history here, pleasant views of the surrounding area, and a great attraction for those with children.
Visitor center offers facts about the history of Lake Superior and displays interesting model ships and old equipment. They have a schedule on a screen for when boats are passing through the canal and an overhead announcer that provides updates. The outside space provides excellent viewing for the large ships going through the canal. In summer you can feed the sea gulls as well.
Loved the ship and metal / ore industry history that is displayed in this museum. Best part, it is free for everyone. Lots of good activities near by including1. bridge,2. Carriage ride3. four wheeler family bikes4. shore view5. and good food places.#MetallurgyHistory#ShipHistory#DuluthHistory#NorthShoreOfMN
A lot of interesting to place about ships and shipwrecks. Great location next to the lift bridge.
Beautiful views of Lake Superior and surrounding areas, the actual displays are informative and interesting.
Awesome water boardwalk and museum and gift shops. Loved this daytrip stop. Took hours or half day to see it all.
Nice place to stop, nice little history of Duluth. Worth a stop in.
I like to study history and this place has many different exhibits. You can also go down to the lake and watch the bridge raise for ships.
I feel like this is a place that should get old if you go so many times, but it’s definitely not! I go with my family here every time we visit Duluth: it’s part of our tradition!
If youre already down in Canal Park, its worth strolling through. You will learn some history, see some exhibits, and have a prime view of Lake Superior!
Great place to learn about the history of the city, the region, and the importance of shipping in the Great Lakes.
The lady working in the gift shop was the best!
Really great museum. Gift shop was great. Elevator for anyone physically challenged. Movies play every so often. Loved canal park as well. Great benches. Saw a barge go through after bridge was raised. Lots of free things to do, photograph or just sit on a bench and enjoy scenery. Were visiting from Alabama so a different atmosphere. Plan a day around all the things to see and do around Duluth Riverwalk. Surreys, scooters etc can be rented for additional prices.
I stop by here nearly every time I go to Canal Park lake walk. If you like ships this definitely a place to check out. There are nice bathrooms and a small gift shop down the ramp. Go back in time to the guest cabins or pretend your steering an old ship! Note: Food or skateboards are not allowed inside.
Very nicely laid out. Looking forward to revisiting the museum and waterfront.
Wonderful displays and informative and friendly staff.
Nice but cool. Temperature is 48°
Enjoyable and free! great info about great lakes shipping and maritime history
Lots of history about the great lakes and the Martine history. Free site. Encourage a visit.
Always a great place to visit! Lots of cool information and history
This place is super cool and free of charge. The Park Ranger was very knowledgeable and helpful and the education on the Edmund Fitzgerald was super neat to learn about.
Amazing huge museum, lots of train stuff of course, but so much more. Glad we made the trip into Duluth to see it
Very interesting exhibits and information about shipping in the Great Lakes and the Duluth harbor.
Really neat place to see the splendor that is Lake Superior. Its also cool to see the big freighter ships come in.
Lots of fun stuff like vintage fresnel and clothing as well as signs hanging from the ceiling.
Come learn about Great Lakes shipping and if you are lucky, you may see a salty enter the harbor under the lift bridge.
We didn’t have time to do the full tour, but even even just our way into the gift shop and back was very interesting. They made announcements on when the ships were coming through the lift bridge.
Cool place to visit if youre in the area and have an interest in history and how things work. The lighthouse was neat, and we got to see a large ship packed with iron pellets leaving the port.
Been going here once a year since i was a little kid. Still love walking through. AND ITS FREE!!
Truly must be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Well worth the stop. Located right next to the lift bridge (an added view) the museum displays the maritime history of the Lake Superior area. Great place to visit.
A MUST see experience when in Duluth. The Maritime museum was very educational and engaging. Watching the bridge go up and down and watching the ships pass through the canal is the highlight of the park.
Good place to stop and relax and learn a little at the same time. There are places to sit inside and enjoy the views as well!
Great way to learn about the operations of the lake and port. Really enjoyed the audio visual of the shipping procedures at the port.
Im fairly certain the restrooms are open 24-7. SO nice to come in out of the cold after seeing the FABULOUS waterfall!!!
Very interesting collection of information and memorabilia on the history of Great Lakes shipping.
Spent a week in Duluth for work. Great museum to visit. My first exposure to the Great Lakes! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope to get back some day.
A quaint little gift shop. The shopkeeper was extremely friendly and helpful. Things were reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit if youre visiting the area.
Very knowledgeable people at the front desk they know their history..
Very informative a must to truly get a feel of understanding the history.
Neat exhibits. Shows history of the maritime industry on the great lakes. Definitely worth the time if you are on the lake shore.
Informative and fun exhibits and its also free! The museum is right on Lake Superior and offers amazing views.
Always great to see the boats go under the Ariel Lift Bridge. The museum is filled with great pictures of old Duluth and different types of ships and how they have changed over the years. Great displays.
Always a great place to stop when in Duluth lots of interesting info.Best part its free for anyone who wants to go in
Cool, informative FREE museum, lots of history explained.
Interesting to watch ships go through the canal and under the bridge. Brief history of the Edward Fitzgerald.
Beautiful view of Lake Superior. Clean restrooms, for public use. Lots of stalls. There are vending machines outside the building with drinks, reasonably priced. Lots of places close by for snacks, other drinks, and ice cream treats on a hot day.
The viewing of ships along with all the interactive features makes this an amazing place to visit while in Duluth.
Awesome place with lots of history and great views.
Free! Good interactive exhibits. Ships arriving and departing right past you. A lift bridge right there. After all that, walk over to the curling club for a beverage and cheese curds while watching Olympic curlers.
Just a great place to visit. Fun to watch the ships come and go and to see the lift bridge operate. Clean park with nice landscaping. Love the concrete/brutalitst architecture. The displays and exhibits do a fine job of connecting the stories of iron range and industries to the port.
Very hot inside, but very nice. Even more impressed that it was all free.
It had been a few years since I had visited the museum (other than to use their bathroom - those of you that have visited Canal Park know what I mean ;) We visited in June and decided to wander around the museum. It was actually really cool! Not only educational but pleasing to the eye as well. I love all the small scale models of ships. There is no cost to enter, however donations are welcomed. The museum is in a great spot and is definitely something you should see when you are in Duluth.
Wonderful place for families, loads of history, watch the draw bridge move to allow boats pass. Food in general is great.
Must see stop if going to canal park. Really interesting facts about Duluth and the shipping industry.
Very interesting. Great displayed. Love the history.
There are many interesting things to see in the building, but the entire experience of the adjacent lift bridge and shipping channel is what keeps us coming back for more year after year. It is amazing to watch the big ships come in. It is fun to walk around anytime. It is often quite busy, and parking is a challenge. The closest lots all have tolls, although the cost is not prohibitive.
Watched the ice flow out of the harbor and enjoyed views of the lighthouse
We like to sit inside on the bench facing the canal and watch the ships pass thru. Free self- guided tour. Nice bathrooms.
A very worthwhile museum if you have any interest in ships or history of the region. The only cost involved might be parking depending on how far you are willing to walk. Of particular interest was the simulated wheelhouse, various ship models and observation deck. If at all possible attempt to be around when a ship is entering or leaving the harbor, you have a great (warm) view of the entire process including the raising of the aerial lift bridge.
