Ive always loved looking at all the unique things through the windows. I wish they would of taken my things to sell; but still just love to look.
Have wanted to visit here for years and finally made it. Wish I hadnt waited so long! This is like an art gallery where you can get close to and even touch priceless items. After our visit, we watched the online auction to see what our favorite items sold for.
I bid $1,000 on their bidding platform and then suddenly the bid is $1,200 and then it gets crossed out (retracted) seconds later and then it says $1,100. I bid again at $1,200 and hit confirm but the item was closed after I did that and my bid wasnt acknowledged. I look on liveauctioneers and sure enough my bid for $1,200 appears under the bidding history but it says sold for $1,100, the lesser price. I inquired about what happened and they tried to justify it with an explanation about how it appears that two people raised their hand at $1,200. Why would you sell it for $1,100 then? It makes zero sense. I was told to follow up with them a week from now incase the sale doesnt go through. Gee thanks, seems like you cant do much of anything; take bids correctly or let customers know what is going on.
Our experience is as sellers and we appreciate and learn from DuMouchelle. Not all of their appraisers are equally knowledgeable but they consult with each other. If the item is not likely to sell or not what their buyers come looking for, they will tell you. You’d pay $25 for an item that gets no bids (your item gets high-res photos and entry in a glossy catalog regardless) so you don’t want to pay this for something that probably won’t sell. You can send up to 10 photos through their website and save yourself the trouble of bringing in anything they don’t take. Over the years we have also gone to Schmidt’s Auction house in Ypsilanti, but they won’t take anything that does not already have an auction history and DuMouchelle may take a chance on something quirky or original. Auction selling is a form of informed gambling really. We enjoy the process and DuMo is a reputable firm.
I sold some family antiques through DuMouchelles. I found the staff to be kind, friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Everything I listed sold.
Friendly and accommodating staff. Easy access location and a super easy loading dock. One of the best.
I have been here at least a half dozen times throughout my 60 years. Two of those times were during their Wednesday free appraisals. Both times made me feel as though I was at antiques roadshow, very professional. Thank you so much!! Definitely a Detroit gem.
Great place, great stuff, their explanations are very honest.
Having a horrible experience today with Lisa Dumouchelle...I won a lot using LiveAuctioneers and they are not honoring the sale...and Ive bought from them for years. They said clerical error...I say BS and they need to make this right...
I drove from Grand Rapids to Detroit specifically to submit two Winston Churchill paintings for DuMouchelles review. Since the virus crisis had closed most businesses, I feared the Gallery would be closed. Instead Joseph Walker greeted me, then spent 90 minutes discussing Churchills Art and these paintings; one a Bulldog self portrait, the other Pyramids at Giza. His insight and awareness of Churchills life and times was stunning and much appreciated!Joe is remarkably credible, took the time to disassemble the framing, looked closely at the WSC mark, and ultimately suggested I take the paintings to England to maximize their potential value and achieve closure on their authenticity. Ill long remember his courtesy and highly recommend DuMouchelle Gallery.
Beautiful, quality selection. Friendly and easy to work with staff. Would highly recommend. Joe and Sarah were a dream to work with!!
Where the little guy is big.
Outstanding and trustworthy family owned business. The entire staff is very knowledgeable and they can help you on the buying or selling end of your treasures and collectons. The best in Michigan!
Huge auction house in the Detroit area. I think artwork and collectibles are the specialty.
Its Amazing!!! I had never been to an Auction before. Have admired this place since I was a child. Was wonderful to actually go inside.
So let’s start with me and my wife calling there to inquire about having a piece of furniture appraised. We were sent to a voicemail for the person responsible for appraisals and we left our contact information. No one ever calledUs back So I made a second attempt approximately a week later and did get a hold of the gentleman can’t remember his name and he informed me I needed to send pictures and information to their web to their email address attention Joan which I did that same day.And did not receive any type a response back for two weeks I then sent a second email just merely requesting confirmation that this Joanne person whoever was it’s reading the emails could at least respond to me and say were not interested or we don’t do this or some sort of acknowledgment and yet I still haven’t received anything as of this day July 8, 2019I’m a business owner and I’m in a business that is extremely volatile sometimes super super busy and super super slow so I understand business and I understand how you can get caught up in things but the very minimum we do is make sure customers are contacted and even though this is just an antique dining table that they can alluded to on the phone that people aren’t into anymore again I would assume at the very least you would contact somebody and let them know you’re not interested Appraising your furnitureJohn Forrester
Clown circus?Inquired about shipping for an item they were selling. Finally got a response and they do not ship at all. You have to arrange for a third party to come get it, pack it up and ship it. They went on my blacklist after that. Before i had gotten that response I had requested access to their auctions. I received a response that they didnt allow inexperienced bidders to bid on their auctions. LoL . These people dont want to work but want to make all the monies. If they are selling these items on consignment I feel sorry for their customers..
Nobody addressed us... Nobody acknowledged us
Knowledgeable Friendly staff. Eclectic selection of Antiques. Parking vouchers on Auction days. Highly recommended.
Lovely art and jewelry for auction. Nice people too.
Louda did not seem enthusiastic about auctioning my highly appraised rare ring, as a matter of fact she questioned its authenticity even though GIA appraised it. Never return!
I would not recommend. My first phone call, the person who answered the phone was extremely rude. My second encounter was with an appraiser via email, I am looking for an in home appraisal, she totally blew me off. I guess Im fortunate to have found how crapy they are up front. Why is it not possible to give 0 stars, as this is what they deserve!
Doesnt handle absentee bids well. Recently, I left an absentee bid. I followed the auction online and was surprised to watch the item sell to Liveauctioneers for a lower price than my maximum bid. My husband called them and was told that while our bid was on a piece of paper at the table, it just got overlooked. We have purchased over twenty pieces of art and American Period furniture from 5 different auction houses over the past eight years. Only DuMouchelles has mishandled a bid. We have found that when we do preview an auction in person the staff here is not as helpful or friendly as other auction houses. Additionally, they are not very interesting/entertaining if you attend an auction in person.
What a miraculous collection of exquisite artwork. A masterpiece in itself, this fine establishment is a prime example of what a high-end auction house is to look like. A truly breathtaking experience every month! I look forward to the next viewing date with great yearning.
Great place to buy one of a kind items
Please be aware of the disregard of vetting of the shipping staff they use in house. I purchased an item feb 16 / 2019 fully paid for with total disregard to release the item for shipping . My concern is not the cost of the item but the total disregard to personal service and professionalism of this auction house in the Detroit vicinity. The stress of the auction is enough but the complacency and total disregard for personal service is to much. My formal complaint has been forwarded to live Auctioneers, the Detroit better bureau, Yelp and the federal protection agency of auction houses . Please again be aware of auction houses that are to above having in house shipping
How fun is this? A real auction house with items no longer needed by the rich and fabulous people who used to own them. Artwork, furniture, jewelry, wild animal taxidermy, statues and more. Extremely nice people inside who will buzz you in and answer all your questions. Even if you never buy a thing it is fun to browse.
Amazing that the store changes every month
Went to the Wednesday auction preview to look at an item I was interested in purchasing. Filled out the absentee bid form for telephone bidding. Received an emailed confirmatiom of my bid form on Thursday. Walked around Saturday afternoon with my phone in my hand waiting for the phone call that never happened. Waste of my time.
Worst scum bags in there business. Do yourself a favor and deal with a reputable auction house. I have dealt with dozens and dozens of auction houses and these guys don’t deserve to be in business. They give auction houses a bad name. You heard it here first. You will regret dealing with them as I recently did.
Reading all of the reviewed helped me to write this one. The first time I had an experience with this auction gallery was not pleasant. For many years, I had received their catalogs through the mail and I proceeded to wrap and pack items of interest for them to process. After arriving, I indeed met with the lady in charge and was told, that my items did not qualify for their auction items and that I should look in the Birmingham area for a place to sell them. I mentioned to her that these items were in their catalog and her statement to me was that was an entire household auction. The second time, years later, of all the items I brought to their site, they only wanted 2 lamps to consign. I left with all the items I brought and have not returned. In my opinion, one should consider the feeling of others and be respectful. I can indeed understand burn out of some, but when u r making $$ of others, one must not let their feeling get in the way of using common sense. As a positive statement about this company, there were a person (male) that was very helpful and considerate to me just before I left the establishment. What makes this business interesting is, they carry many different items of interest. Yes! it is indeed exciting to some to see such a variety of art that can be intermingled with ones decor and to me, it is indeed great for that. But if you are a layman in this antiques world, you may find yourself feeling that you are being short changed in the educational process of someone informing you of what u should or should obtain before coming there. I gave them a 1 star for communication and a 5 star for sales.
Excellent been going there for fifty years love this place
Auction attendance is very poor, so their answer is to charge higher buyer premiums than any other auction house, value sellers items as low as possible to drum up bids (at sellers loss), then hold the sellers money longer than any other auction house (supposedly 9 weeks...but they never pay on time, you have to call and they tell you its being processed this week. Then you get it a week or two later. So expect 10+ weeks. My guess is that theyre rolling all this dough through a money market fund and collecting interest for 3 months. And did I mention that the majority of quality pieces dont even sell? Better off selling at the flea market!!!
DuMouchelles is a wonderful destination for a great experience to open yourself up to cultural artifacts of the Rich and maybe unfamiliar people of the greater Detroit metropolitan area and time gone by. You will be exposed to the Art, Collections, Furniture and personal effects, some of which could affordable to you at any price point. The Staff are welcoming and always helpful to give you information on any item of interest to you.
Interesting place. Lots of antiques and art. Staff helpful . Parking an issue, as it always is in Detroit. Lots charge outrageous fees and usually more than their sign. I avoid downtown Detroit for that reason.
Great place for art and auction items as well as having items appraised. I enjoy visiting there to view the various items for auction and sale. It is like a museum to me
Went in looking for appraisal on a Picture I found at an Estate Sale...Man was rude and took little time to help... The place is filled with Beautiful antique pieces, but the friendliness and service is sad....
Absolutely the most unprofessional and worst service I ever had in Detroit. They dont like smiling or doing their job (like answer phones without hanging up on you) and the staff look down on you as well. They look like, why are YOU here. It seems to be just centered around the female staff. Mr. DuMouchelle is great but he needs to do some house cleaning as well because I have a feeling this is hurting his business. It was the worst experience.
It was an amazing experience. Its a wonderful place to visit. If you love art and antiques. You also can make and appointment for appraisals.
Awesome Antique Auction House. Very friendly, Great Prices & Late Hours. Right across the street from the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit. AAA+++
Well organized auction house. Have only purchased.not sold. I think buyer premium is a bit high. Never had a bad experience
This auction house charges you a “Buyer’s Premium”, as if it is somehow a great privilege that you are allowed to buy from them. Just think about it. Would you go into any other business and pay this. Go into any major or minor retailer. Pick say $1000.00 in merchandise. You get your sales slip and they want $1250.00 plus any applicable taxes. You show them the mistake and they tell you it is a “Buyer’s Premium”. Would you pay it? Why pay it here? The hammer price is the same as the price in a retail shop. Why are you paying more?Despite a 29% buyers premium they do not offer a reasonably priced in house shipping service. For a company looking for out of area and international business, this should be a basic service.Just something to think about.
I have bought from DuMouchelle for decades, never had an issue, great to work with.A lot of people here seem to misunderstand the Buyer’s Premium. The SELLER pays this fee indirectly because the BUYER should lower what they are will to pay to accommodate this fee. If the fee was 25% and you feel something is worth $100 than only bid $80 plus 25% is $100.
Well advertised auctions with lots of online bidding. I Have Achieved Good Prices even on items that where appraised for less. And I got comparable prices to what I could have gotten anywhere else....Good place for locals to sell collections without going to East Coast or Chicago... Staff is Helpful. Recommended.
Horrible, horrible dishonest people. Do business with them at your own risk. You have been warned.
Very interesting place, if your are looking to go to an auction and scope out what they will have you should stop in. I will only give 4 stars for we seen lots of staff, 5 to 6 people and no one said hello.
Enjoy the artwork from the locals and its also a beer brewery
Holy smokes thats a lot of history! This place is loaded with all kind of furniture, ancient instruments, and various brick-a-brack. And priced shockingly low. Everthing is auctioned, so the prices waver wildly, but nothing seemed on the level of ostentatious or marked way up. Great place to go find an antique table.
James Flannery is the best. They had like 10 lots of items I am interested in bidding and I asked for additional photos of these lots to see the age and color under normal lighting. James responded to my message/calls promptly and took pictures from all angles. Very patient and great customer service!
Classic establishment..very knowledgeable.
For upper echelon
Awesome gallery and they have auctions!
What a fun place. I would reccomend this place for home furnishing before going anywhere else.
Beautiful place extremely nice people I would refer this place to anyone for an appraisal
Your privilege is showing. First experience I had with DuMouchelle’s was a private auction sponsored by an organization. The auctioneer proceeded to calling most of the women in attendance “gal”. Needless to say DuMouchelle was not invited back the following year. Just spoke with someone today, because there are few options for authentication of sports memorabilia and contemporary music memorabilia in Michigan. The first person I spoke with proceeded to pronounce my name incorrectly after I corrected her multiple times. The person who called me back asked “What type of services do you people...... I mean you, need.” I proceeded to clinch my teeth through this cringe worthy conversation. I’d rather attend an estate sale than give “you people”, any of my money.
Always A Menu Of Kindness
I really enjoy shopping at their auctions, well displayed and careful with all items.
Auction house, buy, sell, find great deal with patience
Amazing selection of art and antiques. Havent witnessed an actual auction, but looking forward to it though.
The lady that helped me was completely not interested or informative. Literally said one word, commercial when I asked her to elaborate she would not. When I asked her to tell me something she said look it up. A waste of my time.
A Detroit tradition. The most knowledgeable staff in the Midwest. Auctions are always fun, but a Dumouchelle auction is an experience not to be missed. I love the place.
Was grear found everything faat and wrapped everything then even help me load it on the trl. Thanks for all your help.
I love going there and gazing at the wonderful things they have. However, the buyers premium of 24% plus 6% state tax puts the purchase price too high for me. They also charge 35% for the sellers premium. Somehow, they manage to stay in business, and Im glad of it.
Worthless, WORTHLESS, W O R T H L E S S!!! For more than a month I have called, emailed photographs, called again spoke to one of the principles every time for NOTHING!!! I have well over $150,000.00 of historical collectibles to sell and cannot get a straight answer on ANYTHING. Looking at the other posts here I can see that quite a few people have the same or similar issues. I dont care if they have been been in business since 1927 or since last week, they are HORRIBLE! What a shame.
Didnt get great service here.
Failed to follow up or communicate and cost their consignor(s) THOUSANDS by not processing left bids. A total waste of time on my part--and somebody lost a considerable amount of money. Avoid at all costs.
Having read some of the other reviews I guess I am lucky that I did not communicate with some dead beat old lady. But I do know the type in the art and antique world. My experiences have been very good. I live in the west and cannot preview live so I ask for condition reports which they gladly give. Thier buyer seller fees are about the same as other auction house and they arrange shipment promptly. I like DuMouchelles Auction and several of my friends have started buying things from them. Knowledgeable staff who can answer questions.
Many beautiful items to appreciate
Communication is poor. I had 2 wonderful antiques to sell and they were difficult to work with. I am not going to use them at this point. I did find other companies to go through as they are not the only ones . . .
I have collected art for eleven years and dont recall seeing any paintings that appear to be authentic by well known artists.
Very unique experience
Always something worth seeing or bidding on
The lady who helped me to appraise my art was very rude, uninterested, and not helpful. If she was any less enthusiastic she would have fallen asleep. Would not recommend anyone to waste their time here.
Very unique auction house with tons of art, antiques, and collectibles
Great place to check out pre auction items, antiques.
Everyone was nice and friendly. The service was quick and auction was fun and enlighten.
A national treasure right at home.
Great auction house.
If you have a itch for some too notch Art or Furniture this is your place . They do a auction and also sell after.
Greatest antiques
What is there to tell....this place is fantastic and fun
Love this place!!! Great place to find your dream painting.
I would like to express my great disappointment in how the auction and sale of this piece of jewelry was made. When bringing in the ring originally, on May 10th, I was told that its auction date was June 8th, when in reality it was June 29th.I was also told, payment could take up to 9 weeks, due to the fact, that some purchasers, maybe from other countries, and transactions take longer.I was told to call a day or two after the auction and they would let me know, whether the ring sold, and the details. On June 10th, I was told, that no, I was misinformed, that June 8th was a deadline date, and the auction was actually June 29th, (even though the paperwork I was given, also stated June 8th. So again, I waited, and on June 30th called to inquire.I was told by the woman who answered that they were short staffed, and she was working on invoices, and didnt have time to call the New York office to even inquire on whether it sold or not, and to call back Tuesday. (5 days later)When hanging up, I was highly frustrated, and opened the folder I received upon giving your company the ring. This is when I discovered it did in fact say June 8th as the predicted sale date. I also noted that it made it sound as though ALL payments take 9 weeks after the sale.I called the New York office, and left a message for who I thought was Joseph Adducci. I received a call back telling me that that the ring had in fact sold June 8th, and a check was sent, that I must not have received, and if I wanted, they would mail me a debit card from the New York office, or check from Birmingham. I asked the gentleman what the ring sold for, and he told me he would have to get back to me on that.Awhile later, I received a phone call from a different man, who said no, it was in the June 29th Auction, and had sold, and it could be UP TO 9 weeks before I see payment. Now I get an email saying they dont begin payment for 9 weeks.Quite frankly, Im at my wits end, and sadly, could never their company as a repeatable one to do business with.Shortly after sending them a similar email, I got a phone call from Joey Adducci, at first saying that they moved the date my ring was auctioned, because everyone wanted their items in the June 8th auction with Trumps ex wifes ring. He said, This is the auction world. I reminded him I live here, in the real world, and its bad business. Eventually he said he would find out whether they could go ahead, and send payment, that he was speaking to them at at the end of the week, of course I didnt hear back, so I rang him and he said I should receive it by the end of this week...7/22/16, still no check.
A seriously interesting place to walk through!
Alot of different items to bid on
Interesting place
30 year veteran of Dumouchelles.
Great auction house
Its heaven on earth
Gem of Detroit
They send you to live auctioneer site to bid and don’t honor bids.. they tell you it’s their vendor and take zero responsibility. Do not trust them as they don’t care.. beyond poor customer service..
The showroom doesnt seem very organized and the prices are quite high.
Incredibly poor communication by staff for online bidding--costs their consignors A LOT of money by failing to take legitimate bids...inside game, I assume.
Very good place
Best place in Detroit to sell your expensive art and or collectibles.
