Went to see the museum only to find that it is no longer there. Why is it still listed as operating and that it closes at 5pm? Very disappointed.
Never been there but heard it’s torn down
I grew up in Mt. Prospect Illinois a scant twelve minutes from the Original McDonalds in Des Plaines. It had a few tables and chairs but it was a walk up window just like todays. The Orange Aide swirled in a giant plastic bubble. Out of this world Shakes were all hand made. The French fries cooked in Tallow was the star of the meal.I once lived a block away from it.Ahhh, those were the days.
Its cool to see the original McDonalds as it was when it first opened unfortunately theyve had it fenced off for the last few years so you cant see it close up anymore. Whats the point of having a museum if you have to stand 30 feet away from it and can only see the exterior? Open the fences and Id rate it 5 stars.
It will be sadly missed. It was great to see the classic cars in the parking lot and how an old school McDonalds looked in the 50s.
Very nice to see the first McDonalds franchise ever opened with an actual McDonalds next to it to eat after. Only bad part is, we went on a Thursday during the open hours given on Google maps, but when I turned up they were not open which was very disappointing. Bit of an upside was some of the history in the McDonald’s that was next door.
Unfortunately, according to the McDonald’s corp peeps, they are NOT opening up the McDonalds Museum in Des Plaines yet again this year. They used to open the museum a few days a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day for visitors to stop in and look at the mannequins in the original uniforms, the old prices, the original behind-the-counter equipment and the 1955-era cars parked there. No more.It has now become nothing more than a run-down, unmaintained piece of property with a fence around it.Typical of corporate America. Thanks McDonald’s corp, you’ve again ruined something that was once very cool.
Not worth to come to see it. It is closed.According to web should be open weekends between memorial day to labor day. Not true.It is just small bulding, gated. No way to come closer to take a picture. Waste of time .If you want to see it few old pictures, they are in other McDonald just around the corner.
Its gone. Demolished last year dont waste your time .
Great place to take out of towners for a quick photo before going to Ohare. It is a shame that they have not turned this into a real museum. Last week I saw four other groups of people stop to take photos within a 15 minute time frame. There is a lot of untapped potential here.
My boyfriend told me that you could go inside and see it up close years ago but ever since I moved here for little over a year they have never opened the gates and now I hear its being torn down possibly? Big bummer and disappointment. :(
It was torn down last year I believe because of flooding issues in its location.
You can see a little 1980 museum and a replica in bad shape. So thats cool if you live near but dont do 1 hours of car only for this.
Came here at night time several years ago. The museum was closed. But it is still a historic place - thus, worth visiting.
After seeing the movie Founder and learning the true story of McDonalds, glad to see this place destroyed. Des Planes was never number 1
Seeing the history of McDonalds was quite interesting. Everything from the original founders to the current CEO. Definitely a part of history.
Cool visit for the kids. Enjoyed seeing where the golden arches started.
I enjoyed seeing the meusem but unfortunately it is being torn down
Great history here. I enjoyed reading some of the artifacts that they have posted.
Got there outside of operating hours but was able to get some excellent photos. I have to get back someday to get inside.
Cool place to visit. My son and I went to check it out after watch the Mcdonalds movie with Micheal keating in it sorry I cant remember the name of the movie.
It was alright, nothing too much to see. Not the true first McDonalds. Still nice to look at.
This place is open only on memorial day . But its great see first mc
Cool but stay Croc didnt found mcdonalds If you watch the movie The founder you will see the truth
Been driving by this place tens of times for yeas and decide to stop. Was worth it. A first ever frenchise McDonald drive up
Either old or new im lovin it
It was close when we visited and avery bost was disappointed
The McDonalds #1 Store Museum is housed in a replica of the former McDonalds restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, opened by Ray Kroc in April 1955. The company usually refers to this as The Original McDonalds, although it is not the first McDonalds restaurant but the ninth; the first was opened by Richard and Maurice
So sad to see it torn down. Now theres really nothing to see there.
CLOSED. they were still demolishing it. Shame
Its really closing for good and it is so sad that they are destroying the McDonalds Museum as it was a big part of so many peoples lives when we were growing up and to see how it was still in one place that stayed still in time for us to show are kids
The museum is not there anymore. Is gone...
It is gone! Unbelievable. A part of history gone. This place and location is even mentioned in Founders movie. So sad. Terrible.
Not Rick but his significant other went to the original Mc Ds for a BIGMAC when first introduced in Des Plaines, Ill believe around, 197
I believe its awesome that two brothers began the Mc Donalds restaurant and allowed a milk shake machine salesman from Prince and Castles open up one, actually this very one His name was Ray .
Cant believe this building is going to be demolished. Everytime I turn around McDonalds gives me another reason not to eat there. A real disgrace and shame.
Its being torn down soon. All of the memorabilia is gone.
Never got to see it, sadly demolished
Its closed for good
Very sad to see a piece of history torn down.
So nice to be there!
Closed!!! Sign is gone and the building looks gutted.
Outside viewing only. Closed all the time.
You cannot visit just can see from outisde
I happy it back!!!
Funny how one of the first mcdonalds is seen as historic. Gives you a bit to think about todays prices when their hamburgers used to be 15 cents!!
I LOVE the Triple Cheeseburger, extra cheese plane
Apparently not the first McDonalds opened.
I worked there myself, under the name of John Peter Cogswell while at Highschool, Main East. 1961. It was the first DRIVE-IN, not restaurant.
We were involved with the DEMOLITION Of the Museum ..It is no longer there..
Funny how this museum, has just as high of ratings as most Mc. Donalds
Oh, My God! McDonalds Is Invading!
Part of history
It is no longer there.
Drove 110 minutes to find out it’s closed
Closed permanently and currently being demolished.
This is the site of the first Ray Kroc era McDonald’s
Great culture place
Calls itself the original when it isnt, and is not accessible to visitors.
Thats history.
Well its Ben closed for the last 3 years thanks to a flood the only way you can see it is from the outside of the building see why its got a date with the wrecking ball it will.be gone for ever
Nice
Dope
Its cool to see a piece of History
It was ok
CLOSED! And I dont know why. Should have been open.
Nice piece of history but disappointed that it was not open serving people food at their old prices
Totally awesome
A window to the past. Loved it.
Wow!!!
