Thats so sad....... I cant imagine wha it was like for their families.........
I live in the trailer park. I do get recurri g dreams of being in a plane which is about to crash land. It lands. And my co passengers are hungry for food that me and the pilot try to bring for them from nearby airport cafetaria. Other such wierd dreams like being pushed into a bottomless pit. I did not know about the crash. I got these dreams. The dream of going downhill etc then i investigated.I am a Hindu. Hindus believe in feeding the dead ancestors when they visit once a year on their anniversary date. The belief is that they exist in a different time dimension where 1 year of Earth time is 1 day for them.Shiva is the Lord of Time. Kashi is the holiest Hindu city where ruling diety is Lord Shiva. The city is on banks of river Ganges. Pilgrimage to that city is mandatory for a Hindu. The city is full of burning ghats and cremation grounds. The purpose of visiting that place by Hindu is to offer food to his ancestors. Somehow that city is located in such a space where time dimensions coincide?.The food is let loose in Ganges and is carried away by the flow of the river. When not in Kashi Hindus perform the ceremony near any flowing body of water or even in a pail of water which is thrown into a river or fed to plants.I am writing this because I think a Shiva temple should be constructed at the crash site.I think the growing violence, killings, stress in cities like Chicago is probably caused by the unpeace that exists in the nether world. Otherwise how do we explain the mass shootings by mad people every once in a while in the Western world or even the heedless violence and terrorism in Islamic world?India is a land of peace...Om Shanti Om
There will probably never be an airline accident as tragic as AA 191 in this country again. In 1979, it was common to operate massive wide-body jets on domestic routes. Today, the same route is typically handled by planes with half the capacity. Many of todays improved safety features in aviation were a direct result of this horrific event. If theres any solace to be taken from AA 191, its that even some 40 years after it happened, America has not experienced a higher death toll from any commercial airline accident. The industry learned volumes from such a tragic sequence of events.
Just drove by there for the first time. Will be 41 years this May and I still feel so sad for the victims and their families...
That flight nearly hit the gas tanks nearby. Had she hit them, all of Des Plaines wouldve been destroyed. I would not be here as testament to the tragedy. It came to within 500 feet of my trailer.
I was walking home in Bensenville and saw the mushroom cloud. I thought it was WW3 for a minute. Then I realized it was a big fire from a plane crash. Very sad day. Memorial on Lee/Touhy.
I give five stars for the recognition, however I strongly believe there should be a memorial at the location for the families and loved ones lost, not a semi trailer rental lot.
Location is a bit off. Should be a little southeast. You can see still the impact scars. No grass grows there anymore.
I remember being in 8th grade, last day of school before summer vacation, we heard a explosion a few minutes before 3:15 just before school was out, after seeing the smoke we first thought it was a house fire a few blocks away because of the large amount of smoke, we rode our bikes from oriole park school to the crash sight about 8 miles away to see the unbelievable sight, when my friends and I finally arrived I also found out the plane crashed just behind my grandmothers trailer home just missing it by a few 100 feet.
I was driving up from St. Louis to start a new job at a Chicago hospital. Heading North on I-294, was a few miles short of my exit onto the Eisenhower. I dont know if it was a coincidence but I saw a glare directly to my front. But, a split second later, I saw the fireball and and explosion. I was dumbfounded. I did not know what had happened. I went to the hospital but the facility was in full Disaster mode. Someone in the ER informed me of the crash. I dont remember much after that. Every May 25th at a little after 3pm, I take a pause.
Was there that day. Thanks to the pilots for missing the trailer park that day. Yes some flying debris took some lives on the ground but it could have been much, much worse. I thought it was Delta Airlines. Oh well. There was hardly any debris on the ground. It burned up pretty good.
The permanent memorial for the victims is located at NW corner of Lee/Touhy. There is a garden monument with of the bricks having an individuals name engraved on it.
It is DISGUSTING that 270 people were killed in a tragic accident here, and its all but forgotten--no memorial or park at the crash site.
My dad was flying from Lake in The Hills to Meigs field in his Cessna 182 (N7609G) They were watching flight 191 waiting for it to clear 5000 as they were outside of they 5 mile radius, below 5000. They saw the whole ordeal, from the air. I believe it happened on a Monday of a holiday weekend and they were hoping it was a cargo flight but immediately recognized the low probability due to the end of a long weekend.
May 25th, 1979 - Senior ditch day from Forest View HS in Arlington Hts IL. Saw the smoke rising in the sky from the car wash. AM radio confirmed plane crash. Myself and buddies I was with drove into the trailer park from the west end. Parked and walked right up to the west edge of the crash site, Police, Fire, and Ambulance still arriving to the scene. At the time I did not realize the magnitude of what had happened, not much left of the aircraft, smoldering field, fireman dousing what flames were left here and there. A bare piece of the fuselage maybe 15 foot long section of passenger windows laying in the trailer park street, we actually grabbed it and moved it off the road. Just bare metal, no windows, no interior walls. So yes, I touched a piece of the aircraft debris that day, Ill never forget that.
You cant really see anything here. Theres a fence around the trailer court and the trucking company.
I see a documentary about this accident. That Gods Kingdom comfort all the families who lost yours friends, parents, sons and brothers.
I flew out of OHara for Denver, CO only hours earlier that fateful day. Ironically, I was on an American Airlines DC 10. That freaked me out after I arrived in Rapid City, SD on a connecting Frontier Airline (are they still in operation?) and watched the TV coverage that evening.
Joliet
Its sad to look out over this field and think of what happened there.
