I always love visiting the History Colorado Museum! I was last there around 2017, so they have new exhibits and art installations, including one about the history ans culture of the Ute Nation, Hecho en Colorado (pieces created by Chicano/a/x, latino/a/x artists), and an exhibit with hundred items celebrating the centennial state. They even had some great art installations by Gregg Deal and Adri Norris. So Powerful. And even though some of the interactive stuff was closed down or required styluses to interact with, it was still a good time, and many powerful moments.Dont want to spoil the whole museum for you, so here are only a few pictures to hopefully convince you how worthwhile it is to go right now!
I forgot how much was in the museum!Such a great place to go and there are exhibits there that I didnt even know were there. Theres more to see there than you think. But I do admit that there is a lot there that seem like its more just for conference rooms and all.. but it is great.
A wonderful museum! They do a great job rotating exhibits to reflect both Colorados past and current events. Its a fantastic place to practice social distancing and still be inside on cold winter days.
Timed entry was great, the museum was not very crowded and I definitely felt safe. Styluses were provided for the touch screen interactive exhibits which was really nice, and staff were keeping things clean and regularly wiping down surfaces. As usual, the exhibits were interesting and informative, and I particularly enjoyed the new democracy exhibit.
We were able to visit for free because the had free admission on the weekends until election day. The museum was very informative. There was an exhibit that showed 100 items that represented Colorado.
Amazing and comprehensive museum that covers the history of Colorado in great detail. Quite a large museum that can easily take more than 1-2 hours if you like to visit exhibits and check every detail. Wide ranging exhibits and artifacts and quite a few interactive ones which are fantastic for kids and interesting for adults.Went during Denver arts week which happens during the first Saturday of November where multiple art museums graciously open up their doors for free between 5-10pm.Museum admission is not expensive on most other days and it’s a fantastic way to get a comprehensive view of Denver is an extremely short period of time. Great for tourists who have the time to learn about the city and locals with families who want to start giving kids great knowledge about the history all around them.
Great museum!! Really cool representation of ancient, old, recent, and current Colorado. Beautiful exhibits. Interactive. Well designed. Beautiful building and interior spaces. Only 4 stars because parking is not great.
Went here for a lecture on historic beer but dropped by early to check out the museum. And I am so happy we did! They had thoughtful exhibits that covered large ranges of Colorado history. The Beer exhibit we went for was awesome and we loved watching the old Coors commercials.
HCC has done an amazing job adapting to the current COVID standards. At walk-in they provide cloth masks, if needed. They also supply you with a stylus pen that is very helpful for those high touch zone areas. Staff is always so helpful and friendly! Exhibits are full of history, information and most are interactive. Gift shop has some great finds too. Highly recommend!
Whats a fun little museum! Went for the John Denver experience, which wasnt the best exhibit, a little lacking, but cute and fun none the less. Gave us a chance to see the rest of the wonderful museum and explore! They practiced very good covid regulations and we felt safe. Felt great to be back in a museum again.
We had the pleasure of visiting this museum last weekend. Very nice. Be prepared to be here for a few hours. I must say the parking options werent that great. But it does not take away from this place. Enjoy.
Educational and very enjoyable! The exhibits are well thought out. Highly recommend!
This is a great place to spend the day. We were there from open to close. It opens at 10:00 and closes at 5:00. The only day they are closed is Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years. And we still did not finish the whole place. They have handy cap entrance and ramp. The employees are very knowledgeable about the products. It has a gift shop and the bathrooms are clean and well lit. You should come and check it out for yourself.
Excellent museum - surprisingly, one of the best Ive been too in a long while! I found it to be worth the price of admission, and ended spending two more hours there than I had originally planned. Of course, its all about Colorado, the struggles, the victories, the challenges of yesterday and today. Plenty of interactive exhibits and memorabilia, covering topics from dino fossils to human rights to beer!
Museum is full of information. Very interesting to walk thru. Took us about two hours to go through. Would recommend to anyone.
Fantastic exhibit on democracy! Great for adults and kids a like. Beautifully designed with local artists.
Awesome museum you can potentially spend a whole day in. Plenty of historical stuff as well as rotating exhibits of things like the school kid art exhibition that was being installed when we arrived. During our weekday visit there were lots of school groups so be prepared for that.I loved the exhibit about beer, especially the vintage Coors ads. My family has worked at and distributed Coors beer so I have a bit of a personal tie but even if I didnt I think I would have gotten a kick out of the 1970s era mountain man & woman (this aint no flat lander beer) ads
Cool museum with lots to do and see.
We enjoyed all the exhibits. We went specifically for the Beer Here and found it interesting. We had already been on the Coors Brewery tour and found that info helpful in viewing their Beer Here exhibit. We enjoyed all the old saloon pictures in the beginning. The museum building is very nice and easy to get around. We went on a Sunday as meter street parking is free. It was not crowded on the day we went. Senior discount available and we had coupons for $2 off. They had to ring up us separately to use both the coupons.
Very good, I would recommend to anyone. I really liked the attention to detail. I will definitely return soon.
Terrific that its free admission on weekends u til Election Day 2020!Guy at desk handling my admission was a little dictatorial in telling me how to wear my mask. There is a box of masks at Entrance for those who may not have one. Hand sanitizer dispensers all over museum. Not all exhibits were open or operating at a reduced capacity due to stupid Covid virus.
A wonderful and very underappreciated look at Colorado history in this museum. They make an effort to offer a more inclusive picture and tell a variety of different stores to illustrate the diversity of this state. They try to show some of the cool, current things as well as take a look some tougher subjects in a fair, respectful light. Overall, its a great way to learn about the history of Colorado.
On first glance a good deal of the displays read like tourist brochures than content heavy museum displays. I found some displays invigorating, and others sparse. The building is beautiful, giftshop superb, staff welcome and accommodating. I hope a multi media feel will expand the conciousness of this museum to its former grandeur. I love the ABC and artifact rooms. Hope to see more archeology and cultures in conflict presentations in the future.
Highly recommend to visit, staff are all nice. Give yourself at least two hours in this museum.
We didnt realize they closed at 5pm on Sundays and arrived at 3:30pm. Our entire family enjoyed it. We are planning our second trip and will make sure we have more time to spare.
Excellent place for family visits. After 1 trip we became members. We loved the Play Ball exhibit and the history of Colorado. We recommend natives and transplants visit at least yearly to learn about the culture and history of our beautiful state.Reminder street parking is usually a challenge and the meters now take credit cards in addition to coins. It is across from Denver Art Museum (DAM) and within walking distance of several other downtown attractions and eateries, we recommend making a day of it.
A decision debate between fantastic Colorado history and enormous Colorado value! This is a must visit of all ages. Start from the fourth floor and work your way down to the first floor for a grand guaranteed finish. It is the most beautifully displayed atmosphere of Colorados finest history! Take a look all around, there is a surprise around every corner.
The staff and exhibits are so amazing. Went here with my son on a school trip. Jack was our tour guide, and he was amazing with what he knows about Colorado history. Jacks ability to keep a bunch of rowdy 4th graders attention was impressive.
This place is really freaking cool! Its not that much to get on (kids are free right now) and the history they have is pretty freaking cool! I took my son(12) and father in law (72) and they absolutely loved it! The Native American exhibit was so beautiful and informational. The also have a big part where kids and play and mess around for awhile. I strongly recommend this place if youve never been or go again if you have!
First time to visit. Interesting display of John Denver memorabilia with video and music playing. Also an exhibit Hecho in Colorado with art work by Chicano artists from Colorado. Senior admission seems reasonable.
This is a really fun treat that is great for pretty much any and every age. There is a ton here for kids, but lots of adult topics are covered thoughtfully from beer to Japanese internment. Kudos to the curators.
The John denver experience was purely bizarre. 4 floors of exhibits though for $14. You can really spend half the day here.
Interesting museum about Colorado history.I really enjoyed the Sand Creek Massacre Exhibit. The lobby presented a John Denver Exhibit.
This place blew my expectations away! The exhibits were of amazing quality and there is actually too much to do in one visit! The local Colorado exhibits were incredibly educational in a super fun way! I loved every minute!
A very cool exhibit across the ages. Went to see the History of Beer in Colorado and saw so much more. From the skiing history to the diorama of Denver, to the Fort Bent exhibit, it was a great time. Got to try a ski jumping attempt on Howelsen Hill which was really fun. The cafe had a decent flight of beers to pair with the history of beer exhibit which was nice.
Its the best interactive museum Ive ever been to. If you have kids, this place is a must. Overseas visitors - insight into history and futureThere are a lot of things from the past - some are visual and when others are tactile. We spent 3 very interesting hours there. Would highly recommend visiting!
We went to see the John Dnever exhibit, but it was barely an exhibit at all. They advertised it as a must see and somewhere I can learn a lot about the life of John Denver. There wasnt very much stuff at all. Two stars because the rest of the museum was entertaining but we were very disappointed.
Very cool museum that isnt afraid to talk about some of the less savory things that happened
Great interactive exhibits with social distance and cleaning observed
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at history Colorado! Neat exhibits, clean and welcoming building, and very friendly and knowledgeable staff!
Awesome place! The Colorado-based history here is great and the staff does a fantastic job of guiding groups (such as the elementary school I was with) in a myriad of aspects regarding Colorado state history.
This museum was a huge surprise!!! My son went here on a school field trip and I went along too. This place is beautiful, thoughtfully done, and very detailed. It has mini town area complete with a general store, old fashioned car, prairie house, & barn (with fun slide & chicken coup to collect eggs). We also saw the mining exhibit (no detail excluded), the Colorado pop culture exhibit (don’t know the official name), and the dust bowl exhibit (complete with a theater room to recreate living through the dust storm inside a prairie house). The group lunch room in the basement is gorgeous! It recreates camping in the Colorado mountains! I know we only saw a smidge if this medium. It is a must see for anyone in the Denver area or tourists in the area.
Three stories of static and interactive exhibits in a well thought out museum. There is a giant game board on the first floor and a walk-through silver mine that you are taken to by way of a faux mine shaft elevator that shakes and rattles on its way down. There is also a virtual old car ride and a ski jump. Not everything is happy times, however. The tone turns darker as there are plenty of exhibits of the more unseemly side of Colorados history such as the KKK and a walk-through Japanese internment camp. All together this is a well balanced museum with plenty of hands on exhibits to keep all ages intellectually stimulated and yearning to know more. A big plus is the connected small dining shop that sells soups, sandwiches, salads and drinks so you can stay focused on all the Center has to offer without a growling stomach getting in the way!
This place is amazing! It is the best historical museam.... Scratch that..... The best meuseam I have ever been too! There is so much to do and see. It is super interactive and they make learning fun. Definitely go here! Also if you like old houses and womens history ask for the free ticket to go to the Byers- Evans house.
We came to the History Colorado Center for the first time today and were thoroughly impressed. The exhibits are awesome, the staff was great, plenty to do for both kids and adults, and the cafe had A+ food. Prices are reasonable too. This is a great gem in Denver!
We went with our kiddos on their field trip. We didnt know what to expect. It was awesome! So much history. My husband and i were pleasantly surprised. Great tour guide and very interactive. Lots of hands on learning(even for adults). So excited to go back!
Colorado pride clearly on display here. Curators have done a great job of laying out the history of this great state, giving out of state visitors like me a good sense of what makes Colorado Colorado. The 100 items display on the 3rd floor is well worth a visit as a helpful crash course on the history of the state.
Interesting and educational exhibits. History of beer was very informative. Docents are knowledgeable and helpful.
Such a cool museum! You can get a beer at the cafe near the lobby and carry it around the whole place, you just cant take it into exhibits. They have tables near every exhibit entrance on each floor when you can set it and go check out the display. Really fun
Fun place to spend some time learning about Colorados history. They have a lot of really cool artifacts and rotating exhibits with interactive parts, so theres something new to explore from time to time. If you want to take your time with each exhibit, Id recommend that you allow a few hours to explore and not feel rushed. When we visited there were exhibits on the Mining, Borderlands of Southern Colorado, the local Chicano movement, Japanese Internment Camps, the Ku Klux Klan, Denver A-Z (learned some fun facts), Baseball, Lego-Rado, an interactive exhibit on skiing and lots more.
This was a very well done museum with plenty to learn about Colorado. Good stop if you’re hitting all the museums in the area. I was especially impressed that there was a small section on the Chicano movement in Denver/Colorado. There were several interactive exhibits for children and most plaques were translated into Spanish. About 5 floors of museum and the space was beautiful. Bathrooms very clean.
I generally enjoyed my recent visit to the museum with a school group. Our guide was top-notch, and the students found the exhibits interesting and fun. They particularly enjoyed the recreations: the Dust Bowl cabin, the old motorcar, the trading post, the mining elevator. As with many museums, adult interests were gratified by other objects nearby, longer texts or smaller artifacts. I noticed, but did not have time to view, a more sophisticated exhibit related to the Chicano Freedom Movement. I hope to return soon for that, and to see if there are other presentations beyond the range of our elementary social studies program. History belongs to everyone... even adults!
The exhibits in this museum are very well done and interactive. Im an adult and still found it interesting. Also, its a very clean facility and the cafe on the ground floor serves a very good bison burger. Highly recommend if youre in the downtown Denver area and need to kill a few hours.
So much history! Lots of interactive exhibits. Social distancing conscience.
They have interactive things for pandemic which are cleaned after use of other customer which is some thing I liked.
History of Colorado and of the native Indians! Not bad!
Kind of light on actual content but what is here is well done. I especially recommend the mine :)
Great for kids and adults. A replica of a homestead act town, a dust bowl simulation, native american exhibits, and an indoor camping area, and much more. Would love to go back and see more!
Went for my daughters field trip, we had a great time. Alot of good information. We had an awsome tour guide named Steve.. He was amazing with the kids, probably one of their best tour guides by far.. We zipped zopped and shimmied are time watches back to 1833 where we began our adventure at bents fort.. The entire adventure was great and fun experience.
This museum has 4 levels and many exhibits. You can discover diverse stories of Denver and Colorado communities. You can explore the Western American Art alongside the history of Colorado from A to Z. It is a great place for the whole family.
One of the best museums Ive been to. Very hands on and informative. Went during a childrens celebration. Fantastic.
Honestly, the museum feels a bit sparse. Theres vast areas that just arent used. Some exhibits are great; some of them you wonder why they bothered it why its even there. It just seems to lack focus. Its not a bad museum, its just not great. Other States definitely have a message their trying to send or theyre trying to be fairly complete. This felt like neither.
History Colorado is a fun place to bring the kids and grandparents. There are hands on exhibits throughout the museum and it’s fun to learn more about Colorado. I found the Dust Bowl exhibit an interesting, informative and fun experience. The 100 Items showing the history of Colorado was also a cool way to show history and there are some wonderful pieces in the collection including Molly Browns Opera cloak and Baby Doe Tabors bedroom vanity! My son was disappointed that the time machines weren’t there anymore. Overall, we enjoyed exploring the museum!
We went on a Wednesday afternoon after all of the field trips had left. We basically had this place to ourselves!! If you can go on a weekday afternoon, do it!This was a really great museum. My husband and I went to the Monet exhibit not realizing that the rest of the museum is basically closed, so we went to History Colorado. Our kids love the place, but we had never been. It was fantastic. Love the dust bowl thing. My grandparents lived through it in eastern Colorado and it was brutal, so this really made the whole thing more real. Oh, and the ski jump! Too fun.
4 levels, level 2 was the best
Keota exhibit & Womens history exhibit on 3rd floor were great.
Great place for family visits. Cool museum to learn about Colorado and its history. The middle is a fabulous thing to see with the exhibitions rotation making it different every time I have gone. Parking is available on the street, and there are parking garages around too. The museum fee is affordable. I would highly recommend it.
Interesting exhibits and current safety guidelines being enforced.
Great place for a field trip. The Dust Bowl video needs to be updated, so that it includes people of color. The students had a fabulous time though and our docent was great!
This was amazing! The Japanese internment exhibit gave me goosebumps! I teach about it with my WWII unit, but seeing it was a different level.I also loved the info on how the Chicano movement impacted specific portions of Colorado.I went as a mom on a field trip, but as history teacher I could 100% justify it yearly as it goes over every topic we do.The exhibits were interactive, relevant to all ages, and exhibits so many pieces of history that are personal for any citizen in Colorado.I was also very pleased that they were objective and unbias showing the good and bad of our history, as well as mindful of age appropriateness.Worth seeing for multiple trips. I just wish we would have had more time!
Best museum! We absolutely love coming here as a family and on our own. They always have fascinating temporary galleries and do excellent upkeep on their regular galleries so the interactive pieces work well every time. It is all extremely kid friendly and allows everyone to truly explore while still being a great place to go and calmly learn about different parts of Colorados history as an adult. (Its never chaotic or overwhelming like a childrens museum can be.)
Great people and fun displays.
Outstanding and engaging exhibits. Our family learned a great deal and had such fun. When we left all of our kids asked when they can come back. Excellent, friendly and helpful staff.
Mountain and city views from the interesting museum. Great place for a person that is new or old to Colorado to get to know this great state.
As a native, its so cool to have a place dedicated to the history of my home state. Dont forget to check out the charming gift shop. My dad loves historic Colorado photos, and I found two Colorado history photo books that I could find at any other bookstore in town.
Awesome. Learned alot about colorado
Went there to see the history of The Fax.Pretty AWESOME!
An excellent museum with lots of great information and education about Colorado and its history. I would definitely visit again even though there arent a large amount of displays
Excellent exhibits, wish wed had time to see more. Definitely coming back for another visit.
One of the best museums Ive been to in a long time. Very well curated and jam packed with Colorado history (both good and bad). After walking through all 4 levels I felt proud to be a resident of this beautiful state. I would love to go back with more friends in the future
The exhibits were great, we learned a lot about Colorados history coming here! This is a great stop if youre spending a short time in Denver.
It was an amazing display of the State I grew up in... many items I lived through such as the Eisenhower tunnel open. I really appreciated the honesty in the situations such as the Sand Creek massacre.... thank you
Had Great time visiting this place. Can enjoy more if you have kids. Also must check the Dust storm 9 minute video show. Highly recommend
The information about the Utes - historically and currently was moving and informative. I also liked the 100 objects from Colorado and the beautiful photographs from all across Colorado. The long-standing exhibit about the eastern Colorado town is really cool: it really appealed to my daughter and her friends when they were kids. Occasionally there are awesome information sessions as well. As a family, we came to see one about raptors.
This was my first time here since they moved several years ago. The new space is much larger and is wonderful. The kids had a great time, they enjoyed playing in the old town, and at the water management interactive display. We spent about 3hours here
History Colorados great museum with plenty of revolving exhibits to interest anyone interested in colorado. 4 floors of exhibits and a really helpful staff along with guides curators and support. Located next to the Denver art museum and other relevant places in the heart of Denver, Its a great place to make a day of museums.
One of the top museums Ive been to! Everything was interactive so it was entertaining for kids as well as adults. I enjoyed the various exhibits, and I really liked the emersion of the beer, mining, farming, and internment camp exhibits
My wife works right next door and had been to the museum and suggested we go as a family. We decided to support the facility and got a family annual pass since there were a few upcoming exhibits we wanted to see. When you become a member, you get unlimited access to the museum, early access to exhibits, and lots of other perks like Georgetown Loop tickets. The early access is nice because exhibits can be very busy once open to the public.Parking can be tricky, but weve always managed to find a meter someone on the block, and its only $2 for 2 hours which is perfect. The exhibits can be quite spread out throughout the museum on different floors, but its not too difficult to navigate among wide staircases or elevators.
I loved the place! So many interesting things, loved the Japanese internment and mining exhibits. Will definitely be returning soon!
An awesome museum to get Colorado history info. It touches base from the settlers and indigenous peoples to modern day history like barrel man and south park.
Its very interactive and fun... for kids. I didnt feel captivated by any part in particular.
Beautiful place, visited some years back but looking forward to visiting again.
Out of all the museums we went to on our trip, this one was our favorite. So many good exhibits and interesting artifacts. Would go back in a heartbeat
Had a great time. Ages 37, 36, 19, 13, 11, 7, 5, and 4 year old, all had a blast. We spent 4 hours there, could easily stay longer but now we have a reason to return. We left for lunch and returned without a hassle. No private parking, parked on street and kept up with meter.
The staff is incredibly helpful and the exhibits are fun and interactive. Written on the land and Colorado stories were particilarly interesting!
