What an amazing and historic place! I just wish that a) there was more information posted about it and b) that the government hadnt decided in its infinite wisdom to let this structure go to ruin.

A few wall ruins and a marker are all that remain. Militarily, not the best location. Mountains on 3 sides, easy for Native Americans to watch all the activities at the Fort.

Fun experience, road to site is rough and mostly rutted with lots of softball size rocks. Dont trust GPS once on the trail, follow sign and dont give up. Has remnants of Adobe fort walls, rock stage stop walls, and a still functioning water spring well with preserved building, and an old cemetery. I wouldnt try this without an off road capable vehicle.

Wild and remote, it is easy to imagine the tiny outpost. The constant fear of attacks and bodies/bones strewn along the way, prompted action to bury the dead in a grave yard next to the fort. Markers still exist.Access is through BLM but some access as nd the actual site are on private land. No artifacts may be collected on BLM and written permission must be given before collecting on private land. I found an old mule for ponys shoe I laid atop the marker.Theres a couple of places of significance marked on the way in. One is the approach with photos of Old Ft. Commings. I believe if you have enough interest to make the drive to the fort, you probably would enjoy a brief stop. The view is good. There is also a natural spring with a round spring house built to protect the source. Outgoing water is powered by solar panels. It is posted no trespassing at the entrance. The Fort site has the graveyard and some walls still standing in the beautiful colors of natural stoneSomeone has taken the time to delineate walk paths. It is a good idea to stay on them! There are rattlesnakes as well as all kinds of old metals and glass littering the area. Lots of old, rusty nails might be of concern to one who wanders.Id recommend looking up a YouTuber who has some great historical background he shared during his visit several years ago. You can find him as Aquachigger on YT.

Really neat piece of history to see, the pieces of the fort range all over, if you zoom out youll see whats left of the spring house by the label Cooks Sping. All that is left are the ruins of buildings, but be careful, you will need a heavy duty off road vehicle to get here, and some of it lies on private property which has been labeled with no trespassing signs, so if you plan to venture out here please keep your head. And please dont litter, youre in the desert for heavens sake.
