By far one of the best preserves, highly recommend going. Went for the first time for a morning hunt with our own dog and it was a great experience. The wife loved it as well. Great people there. Everything you need to know is on the FAQs or you can call the office for any questions or reservations. Deserves more than 5 stars.
I have hunted on this property a few times. Both have been fun hinting trips with friends. Nice to be able and shoot a round of skeet to warm up before heading out into the fields. Lunch was part of our package deal - good barbecue and some sides. Birds where cleaned by the staff and bagged for our ride home. Only wish we could have stayed longer.
Had a blast. Kathy had a great dog. It was very fun and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The only thing is I wish we could have maybe slowed down and hunted a little slower and make the hunt more suspenseful And potentially flush something Xtra lol. But a lot of it I think was Pickles keen sense
Dr. Covington and his staff are out of this world. You will not find a better place with more engagement, care and pure joy. Shout out to Miguel and dean (and of course the amazing Pointer Nick). I took my puppy and 14 year old son for the first time for them and all I can say is WOW! Bird hunting is in the blood of my son and puppy now. Many thanks to everyone including the folks I could not remember their names!!! All amazing group of people.
Scheduled a hunt for Friday morning and I was late but they still accommodated me and my hunt. Emanuel guided me and I had a blast. Plenty of birds to shoot at and they were nice and fat. Some shots just weren’t safe enough and I missed a few other birds so only myself to blame there. I highly recommend going and having a nice morning or afternoon hunt and remember to be safe it’s just a bird and enjoy the outdoors and the views.
First time dove hunter here. I was invited by a friend and didnt really know what to expect. The outfitter did a great job of keeping us entertained the whole day. Coffee and a light breakfast was provided at check in and then we were invited to shoot skeet for a few hours. Then we had lunch and drew numbers for what station we would shoot at. They loaded us up into trailers and dropped us off at our stations 15 min before shooting hours began. From what others told me, this was one of their best years for Doves. I definitely had the opportunity to limit out but it was my skill (or lack of) that kept that from happening. We asked to be moved to another spot where we thought we would have a better opportunity and they obliged. My buddy asked to be moved back to his original spot while I stayed and again, they had no issues with that. The employees regularly came by in a UTV to drop off ice cold water which was a great service. About half way through the day I wanted to switch guns with one in my car so I called the manager and requested to be picked up. After a few minutes I was picked up and brought straight to my car so I could switch out guns. This was a great day and a great experience overall. I plan to return every year.
I’ve gone on three bird hunts and can’t wait to go back with my daughter. I did the opening day dove hunt the last two years and the staff has been great - checking on us and bringing water and snacks while we hunted. Last year, we weren’t seeing much action and the staff moved us around to maximize our opportunities on birds. Truly a great day with top-notch guides.
First time dove hunter and will definitely be coming back! The entire staff was polite, professional, helpful, and extremely attentive to all the hunters. The grounds were immaculate and produced opportunities for a whole day of hunting. Would strongly recommend to anyone from a first time to a lifelong hunter. Money well spent, memories well made, and a successful 2019 season opener in the books!
This place is amazing! The guys that work there are super nice, and go out of there way to make it a fun day. Did the dove hunt on September 2nd, and man was that a great time! We trap shoot in the morning, and then have a barbecue. The actual hunt was so fun! Birds like Ive never seen, and all day too! The guys there drive to check on you, and bring cold water, and go out of their way to make it fun! Love this place, and will go every year!
Charlie Cosgrove rode there with me. I am sorry he did not have a positive experience but i disagree. 30 years wing shooting and this is by far the best preserve Ive found. Going there for 6 years now. Great shoot. My buds fifty yards either side of charlie both bagged 8 and 9 birds each. One even swapped spots with him. 60 hunters and one naysayer. Maybe it’s you Charlie. Hey Matt and Dean: book me for next year please.
My complaints briefly made - details below – not well organized, failed to address complaints when made during the shoot, and then blamed me for lack of their addressing my complaints about the shoot. No stars would be a better review,I participated in the Rose Hill dove shoot on Labor Day, September 2, 2019. We had to be there at 9 apparently to register 60 hunters by one the manager while the guides/other employees apparently did little or nothing. They served lunch at 10. About 11:00 they called us together to draw lots for hunting positons, and were instructed on where to board a trailer for a ride to the hunting positions. There were no other instructions or comments concerning the hunt either during the registration or the meeting to draw positions. They also failed to advise us of their ability to clean the birds for a fee. There were 3 of us hunting together, and we were in place about 1200, about 12:15 to about 12:45 we had doves, not a lot of doves, but there was some shooing. From about 12:45 to about 3:15 there was perhaps one or two occasional doves overhead while we could hear regular shooting in back of us and at more distant locations. Put another way we sat in the sun for about 3 hours with absolutely nothing to do – while hearing others shoot often. During the 3 hour dead time, one of the guides came by and asked how we were doing, and I complained that we had no doves while there was constant shooting around us. I was assured that we were in a “good spot” and there would be doves – no doves came. Later the manager came by and asked again how we were doing, and I complained that we had no doves while there was constant shooting around us. It was now about 2. He assured me that there would doves about 4. About 3:15 some doves came our way, and they left about 3:45 again while others around us fired nearly continuously. About 4:15 we did get a healthy amount of doves, but again that died off about 4:45 while others around us continued to shoot. After waiting for doves with no success, I gave up and walked back to the parking lot about 6. About 7, some of the other hunters returned. They were all happy – wonderful shoot. Two other members of our party at a different location reported near constant shooting opportunities from noon until about 6. Reportedly 37 out of 60 hunters maxed out the limit of 15 birds, reportedly the best dove shoot ever. After the frustration of seeing no doves for 3 hours and hearing others shoot nearly constantly, I asked the manager why they didn’t move us, and I reminded him that I had complained to one of this guides and to him that we had no doves, His response was “we’re not mind readers.” He added that I should have asked to be moved. He also accused me of firing 150 rounds of 12 gauge, but I shot no more than 30 over 6 hours.I understand that hunting involves a chance of never seeing any game or seeing little game, but when you pay someone to manage your hunt it seems to me that they should address your complaints when you make them. The manager could have told us at the meeting that if we weren’t satisfied we should ask to move, or he or his guide could have addressed my complaints when they were made. Put another way what part of “we are not seeing doves while there is near continuous shooting around us, do you not understand???” As they we driving around asking the hunters about the shooting, they had to know that the shooting was much better at other locations. Also, my 2 companion hunters reported that were hit in the back by expended shotgun pellets, and I was hit in my safely glasses by an expended pellet.
Great place to bird hunt. Great staff!!! Had a great time.
This place is amazing. Educational, fun, and great conservation efforts
Did the all day hunt, I was really happy with my experience, staff brought waters often to help you stay hydrated. They gave us the option to have our lunch brought to us in the field.
Great day as usual always a fun day with you all
Awesome place
Our friends decided to take a trip to Rose Hill Game Preserve this weekend to experience an upland bird hunt. Some of our group of six were beginner hunters while others were experienced. The guide, Mike, was extremely accommodating to our diverse skills and showed us a great time. We started with a tour of the beautiful farm and then shot some five stand to warm up. Mike and the crew at Rose Hill gave us some great pointers which were really helpful later on in the day! We hit the fields with Mike, Pete and their three dogs. Their experience in finding birds was really evident as soon as we got out there. The dogs were well trained and very capable. Mikes emphasis on safety and fun really showed through to give us a great time. Overall, I cant say theres a better way to spend your Saturday than at Rose Hill Game Preserve! We had an amazing time and will be back very soon!
Excellent experience! Went with a novice group for our first time out Upland Bird hunting. We did the 1/2 day guided hunt for Pheasant. Game master and staff were courteous, helpful and friendly. I will definitely return again and am planning on exploring the Ferrell Hog Hunt they offer as well.
As a novice hunter I could not ask for a more in depth introduction to upland bird hunting than I received at Rose Hill Game Preserve. Our guide Mike was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and fun to hang out with the whole day. His dedication to safety for the hunters and the care of his dogs really showed. Mike knew our group was novice hunters but didnt overwhelm us with constraints, he knew as much as we wanted to get birds, we were just having fun being together fire off some guns. His passion for hunting and guiding really shined through and it was very refreshing to see. His dogs were excellent and really knew what they were doing, that only comes from a dedicated trainer/ guide. I am hooked now and can not wait to go back to Rose Hill Game Preserve! Thanks Mike and the Covington Family for the wonderful time!--Dave O.
Thank you Doug, for a wonderful time! You were very professional and patient with us. My daughter Mary and I are eager to return. Many thanks!!!
Great experience!
Did a morning hunt with Mike and his dogs on March 25, 2015, and had a blast! Great dogs, people, and just a real fun experience. I will definitely be back!
A Great Experience !!!I am from Germany and I was on vacation in the US with two friends and we wanted to do an upland bird hunt during our 2 week stay in Baltimore. We started looking for places back in Germany before we came to the US and compared all the different possibilities.Rose Hill seemed to offer exactly what we wanted: a guided hunt with a trained dog and a variety of different birds. We chose the half day package (w/ Bobwhite Quail and Chukar Partridge) in advance and our very friendly guide (he even spoke some German!!) welcomed us on the site and and showed us around. We started warming up at a clay target course since we hadnt shot our shotguns for a while and this was pretty fun. After that it was time to start the hunt. I was a little worried about the many hunter that were around, however, as Rose Hill covers such a big area, we didnt see any of them during the hunt itself. Our guide took us down to a field where we started our hunt. He was very patient and a great company, and his dog did an excellent job: not only did he point very well, but he also brought back every single bird we shot. After we were done, the people at Rose Hill cleaned the birds for us so we could take them back for dinner. All in all, we had a great time at Rose Hill and we will definetly be back next year to go hunting there again!!!
Mike and his guides at Rose Hill are great! As a new hunter they helped guide me through a deer and hog hunt. Great place, cant wait to go back.
This place is so pretty and full of civil war history. Great for summer and spring weddings.
This place is unbelievable!!!! The service that you receive at Rose Hill is by far the best that Virginia has to offer!! Everone goes out of there way to make your hunting experience one that you will always remember an cherish for a lifetime!!!!
Awesome dogs, great guides, and strong fast mature birds... this is the best east coast bird farm out there!
Awsome morning hunt, Thank you
Great guides, great dogs, great people all around.
