I was nine years old and we lived in Berkeley. My brother and I were supposed to be asleep but we were talking when there was thistremendous boom and we had no idea what was happening.I also remember sitting in the dark during the air raids and the First AidStations in people’s garages stocked with stretchers, bandages andmedical supplies.
If you get the opportunity to visit, do it, even if you arent doing the National Parks Passport. This is a sadly little-known piece of history that changed many things: segregation in society, workplace safety, proper training of ones job, and more. Its beautiful and simple; a memorial to those who lost their lives helping to support their fellow servicemembers fighting in the Pacific theater.
Awe inspiring but sad knowing the truth of what actually happened.
Well informed guides. So sad our real history is not being taught in schools. So thankful our national parks are preserving and protecting it.
Very well presented tour by a super awesome ranger. There isnt a lot to see or do; it is a pretty much just a memorial. But it is an important page in history. The website tells the story, but if you are a NPS junkie like me it was worth the trip.Ill give the fifth star when they get their own visitor center!
Interesting glimpse into the past.
This is one of the least visited National Park Service sites for good reason: it is on a secure military base. The ONLY way to access the site is to take a guided tour that starts from John Muir NHS in Martinez. You must RVSP at least 2 weeks in advance and tours may be called off at any moment due to military activity. If you can make it onto the tour, you will be rewarded with a tale of tragedy and racism that should be told. I hope that one day the park gets a visitor center of its own to help better tell this tale.
Tours are ny reservation only. This is one of the most interesting tours, but one of the least visited national parks in the USA. Well worth the visit. Must reserve 14 days in advance.
Historical events that can change the direction a nation grows. Opens the eyes. We often grow up the most following adversity.
Tiday could of used a canopy for shade for the ceremony attendees.
Very interesting but sad part of history.
Review is purely based on the fact that you cant get there. Apparently its within the area of a military installment and no way in. I tried two routes and both were blocked.
On the evening of July 17, 1944, residents in the San Francisco east bay area were jolted awake by a massive explosion that cracked windows and lit up the night sky. At Port Chicago Naval Magazine, 320 men were instantly killed when two ships being loaded with ammunition for the Pacific theater troops blew up. It was WWIIs worst home front disaster.
Port Chicago Memorial was wonderful.. Thank you.
Very cool place
No public access... tried both the routes :(
Unless you are part of an arranged tour, there is no public access to Port Chicago as it is a military base. Misleading to have it as a tourist destination.
