These lovely, unassuming fields, a stream running through them crossed by its humble wooden bridge, are the storied birthplace of America. You dont get much more historic than this. Theyre also a wonderful place to stroll, take pictures and check out the overlook by the mansion that now serves as the Visitor Center; that is, when theres no pandemic. Walk the gardens in the spring and summer. The stairs are wonderful but be very careful on them. Great place to take kids - and pets on leash- for a walk. The older kids can even learn a little history. The iconic Minuteman statue is an embodiment of the simple, dedicated farmer willing to fight a seemingly overwhelming force to protect his home- and create a new country, based on egalitarian principles. Not a theme park- this is the real thing.
It’s amazing to our family that we live in a place so rich in History and historic places to explore. As soon as the MA parks reopened, we visited the Old North Bridge. It’s a nice quiet place and nice scenic views full of reading for kids to do. Kids were learning about the American Revolutionary War and certain places of importance. We can’t wait to visit Minute Man Park next.
Background: in 1775, approximately 700 British troops left Boston for Concord via Lexington in order to seize arms (and perhaps leaders). Fighting broke out at Lexington (the first of the Revolutionary War). The British continued to Concord as they had lost only one soldier. In Concord however they met a much larger contingent if colonist soldiers (more than 400 versus 77 at Lexington). In the ensuing battle, the Patriots drove the British back to Boston (although the British did destroy the Concord cannon). Now to be seen: the reconstructed bridge of the battle of Concord, the battlefield and several monuments. I have annotated my photos (attached).
This is one of the sites where our fight for independance began. History comes alive as you walk the grounds here. Definitely worth a visit!
Great location, plenty of historical structures except for the bridge. A guide informed me that, unfortunately, the bridge is neither the original nor is the current bridge an accurate replica.
Gotta visit if youre at all interested in American history.
Beautifully maintained property full of history about the beginnings of the American Revolutionary War
What an amazing spot in history! A fantastic spot to go and not only think of what happened on the spot but also to just enjoy how peaceful it is. I have been twice before and both times have been really dreary rainy days which for me made the experience all the better! I dont know if it is normally crowded but not a person was seen while I was there.I think this spot is really great, young kids however most likely would not have the appreciation, or attention span, to be here very long. I mostly recommend this to people who understand the value of the sacrifice made on the bridge and can act with the maturity to honor it. Dont plan on the bridge itself being more than 20 to 30 minutes at the very most. However the visitor center can add a lot more.
Wonderfully informative Park staff.
It’s a very sexy bridge.
Always fun to stand on the bridge and watch what is coming down the river.
Really great
Its just a bridge innit?
