Overall a decent at museum. The price is fair and they even have a very gorgeous Monet painting. The main issue I had with it is paintings were grouped by region vs style. So a lot of paintings clashed with one another. If you live in the area check it out, if you are visiting columbia check it out. But I would not go out of my way to visit it.
This is such a nice museum and staff with such an eclectic collection of art for such a small city. I can spend a good 2-3 hours here and still not want to leave. While admission isn’t that much, you can’t beat the free admission Thursdays they have every month. If you like art and are in Columbia it’s a good idea to stop by and see what collections they have (they change them fairly often between seasons).
Truly enjoyed the 1st Thursdays free admission sponsored by Blue Cross.
Wonderful Art museum. Its a good size museum, not too big and over whelming and yet not not too small. I was able to see the Van Gogh exhibit and really enjoyed it. I would recommend looking at their website and seeing what exhibit is in town so that you can pick something that you are interested in seeing and skipping what youre not interested in.The stationary exhibits are also very lovely.
Wonderful place! love the featured exhibits. A must see in downtown Columbia, SC
I always like to try something different for my birthday and in 2017 I wanted to go to a art museum. I decided on taking a small trip to the one in Columbia. I had Yelped it to get a feel for it, but actually being there was amazing!!! You have to witness it for yourself!!! There was so much to take in. I couldnt hardly contain myself!!! There was so many styles of art and many different artists represented. There was some type of street festival going on, but it ended early in the afternoon. This made it kind of hard to find a parking spot on the street, but I did find one not far from the museum. It was also very inexpensive for admission to the museum. I took so many pictures inside the museum. I think I took well over 200 pictures just inside the museum. If anyone is looking for something to do while in Columbia I suggest that you put this on your bucket list of things to do in the SC!!!
Good experience. The horror exhibit was my personal favorite however many educative pieces throughout. Not a bad way to spend a free weekday.
Wonderful museum. Staff was very inviting and friendly. Exhibits were fantastic. Loved seeing VanGogh s work up close! Clean. Beautiful area in downtown Columbia.
Sadly they were renovating when I went there. 2 main collections being added, so that is something to look forward to. $10 without discounts.FOR SURE check out the short story machine on the first floor provided by RCPL. 1/3/5 minute stories printed out on receipt paper like but nicer. The permanent collection is amazing however. Ancient Greece, Roman, Chinese, and European art, statues, furniture and even clothing. Amazing stuff really. Some modern art too was nice. I enjoyed the Mao room.Check it out on a rainy day in Columbia, also close to some great eats.
My family traveled from Atlanta to see the Van Gogh exhibit. It was a fantastic showing of art by Van Gogh and artists that inspired him. I am so glad we were able to see this exhibit. We also loved the other pieces that were on display in the museum. They have a great selection and variety of art. Definitely a place we will visit again!
Beautiful exhibit. Be sure to get the iPad or headphones for the audio tour.
Lovely place with world class art. However it was very disconcerting to have museum staff stalk you all around the exhibits. It made me so uncomfortable to not be able to enjoy the pieces of art alone. Also having them so near violated their own 6 feet of social distancing guidelines. Please FIX. THIS.
Great little downtown art museum worth the visit.
I only saw the Van Gogh exhibit, but was very pleased. Very busy, but encouraging to see so many people drawn to the Art Museum. Plan to see more soon...
Impressive collection for this museum. Classic to contemporary, it has a bit of everything. Chatty staff was a little distracting.
A great place to spend a couple quiet hours. Staff were kind, helpful, and informative. Such a wide variety of things to see.
The best museum in town, feels like New York museums. Plenty of exhibits to go around, Van Gogh exhibit coming in October 2019. Great Costomer service and you allowed to take pictures. There is no cafeteria but the museum has only to floors to explore so it should not take more than 2 hours to see everything. Good place to visit on a rainy day or a hot day in the summer.
It was a nice time inside on a hot day with family. Our granddaughter loved the stickers and wore them all after we left the building.
I had higher hopes of the Tribe exhibit, seeing as there were several areas dedicated to horror films, but I digress. The collectors exhibits in the upstairs area was the hidden gem, I was able to explore and learn so much. Beautiful for a different type of day date, great conversation starters. Make it your own
There was a lot to look at and reasonably priced.
We visited here for the MLK Event. The art here is nice. I’m going to post pictures and let you decide for yourself if you should visit. I hope you all like them. #DateWorthy #PhotographyWorthy #InstaWorthy #SnapWorthy #FBWorthy #ColumbiaMueumOfArtWorthy #UsThatDayWorthy
One of the best places to visit in Columbia. Visited the Van Gogh exhibit and was totally mind blown! Definitely recommend to all
Gorgeous inside and out. First Thursdays are free to locals. The terrific gift shop is free to browse all the time! Great for locally made art or beautiful mass produced. All make great gifts.
Just saw the last day of the van Gogh- themed exhibition. Well done, I think. Very fine rotation of their permanent pieces. Smaller, accessible venue. Superb location with many amenities in immediate walking distance. A credit to the rejuvenation of Columbias downtown.
Loved the Van Gogh exhibit on display and the children area was very interactive.
If you love art then you will love this place. I would recommend looking up their special events and going then since they have some fun and interesting events and you still get to experience the art on display. A recent fun one I went to was the Wizard of Oz pop up.
Lots of beautiful art...Van Gogh display right now
Small, but filled with great historical works. Track coming exhibitions as they change throughout the year.
Its ok but like the art museum in Augusta much better.
I did enjoy visiting the Columbia Museum of Art. We viewed the Van Gogh exhibit, which had some of his pieces alongside pieces from artists who influenced him. About the only downside was that the crowd was large so it made hearing the information the guides were offering almost impossible. But I liked it nonetheless, and also was fascinated by other exhibits in the museum. It was a very nice afternoon and a great way to usher in the new year.
Beautiful scenic art. Love coming here. Had the honor of bringing my grandbaby to play at the art and play outside and then we where able to come inside and enjoy the activities inside it was great !
Awesome exhibits! The Van Gogh exhibit is quite an experience. Make sure to give yourself at least an hour and a half for just that exhibit. Upstairs you will find 20 galleries....if you do it right it will take at least 2 and a half hours and that is still quick. Come early and take your time. A great experience for novel and experienced art lovers. You can take pictures just no flash!
Located in the downtown of beautiful Columbia, SC, the museum is a treasure and houses treasures to behold. My wife and I made the pleasant journey last weekend to view the Van Gogh and his Influences exhibit. The collection was arranged with paintings by artists from whom Van Gogh drew experience and inspiration. And then a Van Gogh painting was interspersed to show said influence; really well done.Combining our visit with a stay at the Hotel Trundle and dinner Friday night at the Hendrix restaurant (best paella in town), this could possibly be the most perfect weekend we have had in a long time.
This was so much fun! Theres a lot to see, but very doable in an afternoon!
Van Gogh and His Inspirations was a WONDERFUL Exhibit!!! I drove across the state of Georgia to see it and was not disappointed! In fact, it was better than I anticipated! I know I must have gotten on the nerves of the sweet Lady who continually kept asking me to not get so close to the work, but being a painter, I just had to get close enough to see the brush strokes. I really needed to share the same space as Vincent did when he painted it.
Jackson Pollack mural, Warhol Mao painting, several other outstanding pieces, including chandeliers. Very nice facility, free admission on certain days, helpful staff.
Id have to say this place is by far the best Ive had for a restaurant! I love how the manager left me a birthday card. That was so sweet of him. Our waiter was awesome. He checked on us often to make sure everything was great and he greeted me happy birthday which was nice of him.
I tried hard not to be devastatingly bored, but failed.Cant say Im a huge museum fan, but they did not accomplish anything extraordinary to remedy that. 2 hours in I was basically asleep on my feet despite my best efforts to enjoy it.
The Van Gogh exhibit was neat to see. Great way to spend an afternoon. Some are Van Gogh, but some are people that inspired him. There was an honest to goodness Rembrandt there too.
The prices are good, membership is better! The rotating exhibits are always so cool, and the permanent pieces are awesome. So many amazing pieces, you could get lost in here for hours.
We really enjoyed our trip to this museum! Me and the kids like to visit art museums when we tour places. We visited this Columbia recently and I was very impressed! We had a lot of fun! They have a great kids area and some really enrapturing pieces
This museum was so peaceful and had some amazing pieces.
Really cool place for a wedding!! Our couple held their reception here and it turned out great. The staff was professional and friendly. Overall a great experience.
Their current special exhibition is Van Gogh and those who influenced him. Their permanent collection is interesting. It includes an interesting cross-section of works, including an Elizabeth Catlett sculpture, a Chihuly chandelier, several Hudson River School pieces, Baroque paintings, a Botticelli, Contemporary pieces, etc. Its worth a visit. The gift shop is small and so-so.
Great small museum with very nice variety and interesting changing exhibits
Enjoyed it. Watch for changing exhibits.
Went for the Van Gogh exhibit. Well done. I did need a primer to understand how to view the exhibit. His works were interspersed with contemporaries and his interests. I had expected his work to be together or perhaps displayed chronologically. It would have helped to have a docent tour. Glad to have seen his work.
Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon out of the heat! Staff was very friendly and helpful. Wide variety of art on display. Took 2 children, ages 6 & 8, and they enjoyed the museum, especially The Cross Hatch (which has great interactive things for both kids and adults to do). And the plaza outside is great with some shade and seating for kids.
Visited for the Van Gogh exhibit. It was tremendous. Well laid out. Very nice representation. Worth the drive from Charleston just for this exhibit.
I enjoy thoroughly the meticulous and intricate lay out this museum has. Each exhibit has very detailed information on the art and the staff is very well acclimated to each type of person that comes in. Ive been quite a few times and the managment does a very good job at making everyone feel welcome and informed. I am an African American and I certainly appreciate the courtesy and support for my need to consume art. I am always treated like a student and more importantly a patriot. Everyone does an exceptional job at creating a fundamental art experience
I have been coming here for years. I continue to admire the variety of objects that are permanent exhibits owned be the museum. I also enjoy the traveling exhibits that make Columbia home for a little while. I have had a chance to see works by many famous and historical artists featured here in Columbia. I would like to thank those people that have made this gallery such a success.
Fantastic horror and sci-fi exhibit!
Huge variety of historical art objects spanning 6-7 centuries upstairs. A lot of fun to browse. The Van Gogh exhibit was worth the 45 minute wait in line. Glad we went. Well done!
Great overview of the history of human art spread out through the galleries. Really enjoyed seeing a Warhold print series up close. Plus they encourage non flash photography, which is something all museums should do
Always interesting to see the different applications of Arts and how its applied!!
My wife and I and our three young children went here for the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit and had a wonderful time. There were explorer kits for the kids to bring with them that helped keep them occupied along the way and there was even a craft activity time related to Van Goghs style that we all really enjoyed. The museum itself is beautiful and the exhibit halls are filled with timeless and thought-provoking pieces.
Great Van Gogh exhibit. Beautiful galleries upstairs too, and there was a flower show that day so beautiful flowers were being carried out. Crowded because it was last day of exhibit but not bad. They are weird about umbrellas...
Van gogh, one of my favorite artists. He was awesome and a very interesting man. Love his works and saw a few i had never seen. Interesting information a timeline on display of his life and related to Americas time.
Nicely curated compact collection. Good thought put into selections for Van Gogh exhibit. Good lighting in galleries was not overbearing.
Ive definitely been to smaller art venues, with more lively art work and pieces. All that space... So little taste.
Interesting works, well curated.
In town for March 2020 First Thursday on Main after an afternoon hiking through the Congaree National Park Swamp. Admission is free on 1st Thursdays and we were lucky to arrive just as Metallica drummer Kirk Hammett was doing a tour through his personal collection of horror and sci-fi art called “It’s Alive.“ Awesome, and just as great is the 20 galleries upstairs. Loved it! Thanks Blue Cross and Blue Shield for covering our admission!
An extremely beautiful place to visit! The staff and security were extremely helpful and professional. The art is exquisite!!
Went to the Van Gogh exhibit. Really well put together and told a good story. Not the most famous of his paintings (obviously) bit a good way to show his development.
I’ve been going to this museum since I was a kid. I’ve since grown up and become an art teacher out of state. While visiting Columbia this summer I heard about the inflatable exhibit and wanted to check it out. The museum is AMAZING. The best I’ve ever seen it. The temporary exhibit was so great. Interactive art is one of my favorite art forms. And I appreciated the video about how the pieces were planned out and created. I was also happy to see many different cultures represented throughout the museum. I was so impressed with the upstairs. I love the interactive activities they’ve added (for example, “is this art?”) The post war and contemporary rooms were so great to see, because I think the museum was lacking modern/contemporary art for some time. I had such a great time and I’m so glad CMA is widening its selection!
First time visiting, I recommend not being on a schedule when you visit.
Educational, well done. My granddaughter loves art and described it as a once in a lifetime experience. I truly enjoyed the way the influencing artist works are integrated into his story.
Excellent museum. Went for the Van Gough exhibit on the way to the beach. Worth it!
We really enjoyed our afternoon visit and the Pollock exhibition was very well done.
Very cute, a little small but very interesting!
A day well spent.
The Van Gogh exhibit was a great way to spend the day with my mother in law.
We enjoy our trip if you a art lover you will like it...
In town for van Gogh at the museum. We thoroughly enjoyed the paintings and presentation of same. Good job all around.
Bed a fan since 1976, when i could get my parents car if i said we were going to the Art museum ! Then I found out they had concerts too !! From Harpsichord ensemble to Positive Hip with the Hop !!!
Amazing museum. Loved the Van Gogh exhibit. Wish they had more art. Check it out if you are in Columbia.
I enjoyed it. My employer hosted an event here last night. The museum has a lot to offer. plan to return when it is a little less crowded and enjoy the works.
Gorgeous art museum, renovated and also operates as an event venue. Located on main St. and always featuring wonderful exhibits. VanGoh is coming which is awesome. Classes available too.
My wife found the Columbia Art Museum online. We are on a tight budget and found out that they offer free admission on the first Thursday of the month . We took our Daughter who is almost one and she loved it. She was so amazed by the inflatable, interactive room, very cool. Thank you City of Columbia and the Museum of Art for making it possible for everyone to experience, enjoy, appreciate and be inspired by Art!
Attended showing of van Gogh and his influences, very good but crowded. Admonished several times about getting too close to exhibits for closer examination, though I did not touch anything. Descriptions of artists and works printed in black on a gray board on a gray wall difficult to read.
Nice art, sculptures and a very unique special exhibit that was inflatables...van gough coming!
New Van Gogh exhibit is certainly worth checking out. Great place inside and out. Outside was recently renovated and everyone should come at least once
Good show good realistic painting. But one of your painting which insulted Chairman Mao made me very uncomfortable. He was a beloved leader of Chinese but drawn as a clown in your museum. Please don’t be political as you are just a museum of art.
Jane Peterson was an impressionist or post impressionist and reminded me of the work of Mary Cassat. It is the Second Sunday and was free. I wanted to see this exhibit at the Columbia Museum of Art, I have been waiting for it. I really like the impressionists and post impressionists. All I can say is it was fabulous ! Peterson studied with some very well known impressionists of the day and was very much in demand until the pop art era stole some of her spotlight. But shes back ! Com see her work and patronize one of the museums coming into its own place in the sun.
Beautiful place and wonderful staff. I would encourage everyone to go out and look around at some wonderfully made art. If the price is an issue there is free admission on First Thursdays.
I LOVE the exhibits. Wow! Pop! Bliss! was fun. Camp Night was really cool. Enjoyed the story slams.
The Vincent Van Gogh exhibit was excellent. The tour with an extremely knowledgeable docent was informative and enjoyable.
We truly enjoyed the Van Gogh exhibit. The staff was friendly and helpful
Went on a Sunday, visiting the Van Gogh exhibit. The layout was nice and the workers just as much. Definitely worth a visit if they host an exhibit or event you might be interested in
GO! I promise you wont be disappointed. We are very proud of our Art Museum & dont miss the little gift shop.Afterward if you know where you look (or ask) just across the street or a couple of blocks down you can sit down & have a cigar, watch the game, discuss cigars, shoot a game of pool or shop Mast General store, go pawn shopping or if you love beautiful tailored clothing, Gamecock hoodies theres shops for those too. If youve got a sweet tooth there is an ice cream shop or catch a movie & have an adult beverage Its right in the middle of Main St. & if you want to shop for oneoor do something from bowl to Ice skate to discover the historic grounds of the statehouse or a cemetery your can leave the car parked!
Currently under renovation, so I didnt get a good, representative experience of it. Theyve got an exhibit on Henri Matisse on right now, and I discovered I dont really care for that, so it was a bit disappointing. But they do have some nice glass sculpture on display. Ill have to come back when the renovations are finished.
Well worth the price of admission. The Van Gogh exhibit was great.
Really fun and inexpensive to visit.
Loved the Van Gogh exhibit!
They are trying really hard. The VanGogh exhibit was thought provoking but contained only a few works by VanGogh and emphasized other artists who influenced him. The rest of the small art museum is very hit or miss. There are some breathtaking pieces tucked away among a lot of mediocre pieces.
The kids art discovery area is such fun and has great hands-on activities to nurture creativity in several art forms. The Cross Hatch room has a great reading nook from the public library. So delighted these areas are free and open to the public.
Very few true exhibits, creepy blonde staffer kept randomly appearing from emergency exits and backdoors. This woman appeared in every room we entered just walking through not offering to explain the exhibits, just oddly walking through repeatedly. It was very unfriendly and I wont be returning.
