Hiked it this morning. I am in shape and it’s a little bit of a strain. Someone said it’s a good spot for kids, I would disagree. Maybe older kids or teens with hiking experience. Wear good shoes. Got caught in a thunderstorm on the way back. It was beautiful anyway. Falls are pretty but not huge and there is not a lot of water currently. Good hike with lots of good spots to enjoy on the way.
A good trail for beginners to test their endurance. Starts out easy on a dirt road then moves into stands of Aspens and pines. Becomes narrower and steeper as it moves up the mountain. The sound of water from the creek is almost always with you. There are a few pullouts to rest your legs and take in the views. At the top, great views. Be careful of rocks if people are scrambling or walking upstream of the rockface.A great way to spend a few hours in then mountains for sure.
Scenic hike with a gradual incline. Parking is a little hard to come by so get to the trailhead early or else youll be adding a mile each way to get to the top parking lot.
My husband and I hiked this, distance isn’t accurate. More like 7.4 miles. Good hike for exercise but the falls are a bit lack luster. Good incline most of the way with some stopping points.
I usually dont write reviews but it was so epic up top... All you got to remember is when you get to the sign that says .2 miles left go up the switchback not right of the sign.
The trails are awesome, very beautiful. The falls on the other hand.... I dont get it. St. Marys falls = less than impressive. We actually saw the sign for it and were like nah this cant be it right!? Met some fellow hikers who also walked right past it because it isnt really much of a waterfall. Maybe when the rains come in it fills up more but Helen hunt falls were more impressive to drive by than this.... Fun hike great views of the mountains but dont expect the falls to be magical
Nice little hike. Not too bad. Make sure to be there early to get parking.
Good hike, lots of fun!
Challenging on the way up, last part steep but good trail.
Beautiful hike that follows a stream through a forest....up to an equally beautiful waterfall...but parents really need to pay attention to your kids...allowing them to climb up steep rocks that are wet from the stream is like waiting for a disaster to happen...and we watched several neglectful parents who spent their time talking to other people rather than watching their kids....also saw several dogs off leash....
The trails are amazing and it was a great adventure. Trails are very easily labeled very hard to get lost.
The first mile is open gravel road that leads to a lookout point, after that, it becomes a narrow trail along side the spur of the mountain. Sign says 1.6 miles to fall, but it is not a quick 1.6 miles. Very active trail, with other people walking/hiking. Took my 3, 5, and 7yr old not knowing the terrain. Spent a solid 5hrs from start to finish, taking breaks as needed, snacking, and then enjoying the top fall. LOOSE GRAVEL in various spots, be prepared to lose footing at times.
Great hike, well maintained and amazing views
Our hike was about 7 miles round trip fr parking lot to falls. Lots of people and dogs on trail. Lots of plastic bags of dog poop not properly discarded by humans who should know better.Otherwise a beautiful hike along a stream in a deciduous and coniferous forest. There were a couple of dirt bike riders that spoil atmosphere with loud motors.
Awesome falls and fun trail! This hike took us a little longer than expected but in the end was well worth the extra effort. The falls are beautiful, however the parking situation can be a little out of control. At the bottom of the trailhead we were blocked in for a bit because of the size of the parking lot. Overall was a great time!
Man....if you arent in shape, you will be stopping several times. The lady who put 7 miles on here is wrong. It is 1 mile to the trail, and 1.6 miles literally going up hill the whole way (itll feel like 7!). Im very out of shape and it took me 2 hours to get to the top. And 1 hour back down since going there is completely up hill. Very challenging hike. It looks like some people didnt actually find the falls judging by the reviews. I cant add photos, but if the falls isnt like 8 of you put together height wise, you arent there yet! You arent there until you stop at the falls and cant go any higher. If there is still trail up above you, keep going! The sign that says st. marys 0.2 miles, you go sharp right and up hill more! Looks like some people thought that one right there was the one. Ugh...lol. (I did too at first!) Overall, give yourself 4-5 hours to hike it round trip!
Gorgeous hike along a creek until you reach the falls. Increases in difficulty the closer you get but as a beginner to hiking, I didnt have much trouble.
Definitely challenging hike for us but once we reach the top totally worth it. Amazing views!
Extremely gorgeous and definitely worth it
This hike is definitely hard if you are from low elevation. But we did the whole thing in 6 hours to the top! 9100 feet elevation at the falls.
I had a harder time on this hike at 8800 (particularly the last half mile or so to the falls) than getting to the summit of Mt Almagre at 12300. After reaching the falls, I went back down a third of a mile and slung my hammock between two trees and enjoyed the view and the quiet for an hour. Parking is a challenge on the weekend and I arrived at 0830. Defintely take time to enjoy the beauty of the stream on the way up.
The view was amazing it took a while to get there but once I was there it was so worth it. The hike is pretty tough to get there.
This was a great way hike.
Good hike, last quarter mile all up hill. Be ready
This is an awesome hike. Went with my wife and two small children. It is a little challenging but definitely worth it.
DONT TRUST THE MAP!! Followed google maps down a hiking trail and broke my car. Didn’t give us a place to park car or stop. Google maps basically ruined my car with many damages because they took me down a path that cars SHOULDNT TAKE. Very angry with google
Beautiful and fun. Perfect challenge for beginners.
One of my favorite hikes in CoS. No matter what time of year you go, the scenery is beautiful! My favorite time is early August when the mushrooms are everywhere and you can find wild strawberries. Spring time, when the snow is melting, is the best time to check out the falls. If you are familiar with the trail enough to be able to do it after a snowfall, it is spectacular. And the wild flowers in the summer are breath taking.Keep in mind from parking lot to falls and back is a 6 miles hike. Three of it uphill, moderately difficult at points. If youre here on vacation, bring, and drink, lots of water throughout your hike. And dont be ashamed to stop along the route and take in the view while allowing your body to acclimate to the elevation.
Its a beautiful hike the whole way, excellent views, leading to the falls.
Signs are the wrong mileage. You are going up for a lot of the last two miles. The falls are beautiful though. Did it with my 16 pound dog with no issues.
One of my top 5 favorite hikes. In summer the trail offers plenty of shade. In winter the fall is frozen and sometimes you are able to walk up it!
TERRIBLE!!!!! My buddies and I followed google maps and it took us down a hiking trail and we got stuck and BROKE MY CAR. Never going again and if you go then double checK directions.
Good, solid hike with a beautiful payoff. It will make you work for it. Good elevation gain and a nice length.
Waterfall is actually flowing. Harder than I anticipated, but its beautiful. Bring water!
Beautiful falls worth the hike bring plenty of water
I much prefer this hike to the Incline. I know... heresy! This hike has several beautiful views of the city, is shaded (major yes for the summer months), and is a little hard, because of the incline of a few areas with steps (so you get the steps like the Incline, but not the whole way up! Ha!). Definitely wear hiking boots or shoes with very good tread or youll slip on the gravelly areas. The hike is much farther than is printed on the sign. Trust the hand written one by some random hiker. Instead of 1.6 miles, it is closer to 2.5 miles. Thank you, random hiker. I hope they dont paint over your correction. And there is a decoy mini falls about 1.6 miles in, hardly taller than a person. Maybe thats why they made the mistake on the sign.
Beautiful hike with rewarding waterfall at end of trail. Trail is decently well trafficked and not too difficult to progress on. Watch for metal signage to stay on proper trail to avoid going off the path like I did.
Nice hike. Stunning views
The incline gets gnarly at a few points, but what a rewarding hike. I woke up on a gloomy Sunday morning wanting a proper workout, and this hit the spot. Because of the rain, the trail was all but deserted and it was pleasantly cool out-- I dont think I would ever recommend this hike in the summer months. It can get quite strenuous, and the narrow trail doesnt offer many spots to stop and rest. Its a great hike though, and one I would love to do again. The trail is very well maintained and has steps and switchbacks in all the right areas
The trail follows the creek and its amazing. The trail is a moderate challenge but its exhilarating. The views are also amazing. I had a relaxing time.
The signs up to the falls lie on the distance. It says 6.2 miles round trip its more like 8 and steep uphills, it gets the worst with the surpentine curves the last 0.2 miles it is more like another .75 mile at the sign. Worth it just go in knowing and the views are more then worth it
Beautiful scenery all around. The hike to the falls is unpaved, but mostly smooth terrain. A few steeper rock stair areas are present near the top. The trail is mostly shaded, and there are several access points to the creek for a chance to cool off. There were lots of families, mountain bikers, and dogs on the trail.
Quite the hike to get to the falls, but totally worth it. Beautiful views!
Fantastic hike with great views ... water was flowing great
Surprisingly beautiful trail! Out of towners kept up with us just fine with the elevation gains, but remember its down on the way back. We took our time taking pics. We started at 2 and got back to car about 5:30. If you need a leg workout this is a great one!
Beautiful trail with amazing waterfall and views at the end.
Great hike. Uphill at the end. Much better falls then Helen Hunt. When sign says .2 miles to falls, it is really triple that.
To get to St Marys Falls, drive to Helen Hunt Falls and its a large parking lot up past it. Our GPS said it was going to take almost 2 hours and that was WAY WRONG. It should take about 30 minutes depending on where you are coming from in the Springs.Moderate and at times difficult hike but so worth it! My parents, in their 50s and 60s, who werent used to the altitude and one who didnt hike much, handled it like champs. We stopped a lot and took our time, it took us 3.5 hours to get up and 1.5 hours to get down. We had our 10 month old in a carrier and I had a huge hiking backpack for snacks and water. Bring lots of water!! Sometimes the trail split and we usually went right or up hill to continue. The last sign saying .2 miles is a little further and you go up the hill (not directly by the falls). The sign is a little confusing and it seems like you go in the wrong direction, but its correct. It gets more difficult the second half with switchbacks. We kept thinking we heard the falls, but it was further than we thought, but so worth the feeling when you finally get there! Its still frozen over mostly (4/19/18). When you get to it, there are rock steps that lead to a platform with some log benches you can sit on and enjoy the view and the falls. Watch out for the giant red ants on the platform! We had a wonderful time enjoying the wooded forests and spectacular views. Highly recommend!
Not only was the beginning of the hike beautiful, it then continues into a beautiful journey throughout the forest along the creek. As you go higher the more difficult it becomes, the trail ends with the waterfalls rushing down the mountain side. Would recommend!
This is one of my favorite hikes in the Colorado Springs area. The hike is strenuous, but beautiful. Make sure you bring enough water and dress appropriately. The difficult part is finding the trail that leads to the falls. After you follow the fire road around to the closed tunnel (youll see the iron bars in front of it) keep following the path that goes up the hill to the left of the tunnel and youll see some directional signs after a few hundred yards. Early morning is best (6am at the latest), but thats almost every hike.
Wow, must hike in CO.
Yes, yes and yes. Love this hike and Cheyenne Canon as a whole. Wonderful place to take the family.
Great experience with my family. Kind of populated, lots of other great trails in this area for less populated hiking.
Love this hike! Has a great view of the city with a beautiful waterfall!
Its about 6.2 miles round trip from Upper gold camp parking lot with 1500 ft elevation gain. Easy hike the kids can do. Be sure to bring water and maybe some snacks.
Scenic hike with a few challenging inclines. The falls arent as specaular as youd think but it is great reaching the too and cooling yourself off in the water. Watch for dogs off their leashes.
Gorgeous hike, and more off the beaten path than the Seven Bridges trail.
Beautiful simple hike, however the falls had next to no water flowing. Hiked with a 6 month old, 2 year old, 4 year old and two 8 year olds.
Really difficult trail to get to if you do not have an offloading vehicle. Even if you do have a 4x4, the divets in the road are immense, so you should have a high suspension if you want to clear them. There is a place to park and hike up, however the road is a bit dangerous to walk on as some corners have little visibility and other vehicles were speeding around the edges.
Its a hike, but very pretty!
Of course this review being on St pattys day, the falls were still frozen yet very pretty. Towards the end of the trail became a little challenging and the view from the base of the fall to the city was breathtaking.
A great hike. More of a stretch than seven bridges. Trail takes you to the base of an amazing falls. A great forest hike with a good bit along the creek. Also some amazing views.
Great hike. About 6 miles out and back.
Great hike, not crowded, beautiful views over Colorado Springs
Long but absolutely worth it. Bring water
My favorite place in the whole of the USA! Great people surrounded by great scenery.
Spectacular ice fall. Hike to get there is an obvious trail, gradual uphill.
Good dog walk
The hike and scenery is great. Great trail.
Long hike. Loved the view at the end.
Beautiful hike really fun and exhilarating.
Nice view, great hike just a little bit hide form people, so it is quiet and peaceful.
I enjoyed the hike, but the waterfall is nothing to look forward to
A nice hike for the family. For biking downhill is better than up on this one.
Nice quick hike that is not overly trafficked.
Wonderful hike. Moderate difficulty.
Pretty place
Wonderful place, beautiful view
Great hike! Longer than the map says.
Easy trail. Until its not.
Great experience!!
Challenging hike
Good day hike and a bit challenging, totally worth it when you reach the falls! Expect some rocky trails and inclines!
Awesome views
Beautiful place to get lost!
Awesome hike and views.
