My wife surprised me with reservations for brunch at Joy District of Chicago and I must say that the service was great but the food wasn’t appealing. I ordered chicken and waffles in which the waffles AND the chicken were both over cooked/burnt. My wife order steak and eggs and the steak was medium rare (they never asked how she wanted her steak OR eggs) and the eggs tasted like a science project. The atmosphere is chique and urbanesque. It’s a really nice setup, HD flat screens to watch a game and valet parking of course.

I am extremely disappointed by the experience we received. It was my friends birthday and we booked in advance bottle service . When we came, they informed us that they are showing the game and that they notified people via Social media. We ordered drinks and food and our food never came out only the salad we ordered. The waitress then told her manager that we never ordered (calling us a liar). Then we asked to have sparklers come out with the cake in which they told us no unless we get bottle service. Our waitress told us that we can buy bottles but we won’t get the experience with sparkles and so forth. So we didn’t buy bottles due to that...However another table was able to get that entire experience in which the waitress said “it’s because he works here”. I couldn’t believe it. Then the manager came over to tell me that the waitress said we never asked about anything. Then we had more people coming for the birthday which were turned away by the front due to them saying they don’t know how the birthday is for. They wouldn’t even let our guest walk to find us, we had to walk out to get them. Never again will I come to this place I promise you their is better places in the city to go to. Covid is no excuse for bad service. In addition it’s overpriced with hidden feesDisclaimer : they will follow you around the restaurant/bar people of color to make sure you pay your bill

Extremely disappointed. My cousin and her friends were in town staying in Wrigley but wanting to go more downtown. We decided on Joy District because they said they could seat 8 of us. The moment we showed up they said theyd have to split us up. We were annoyed since the person we spoke to on the phone confidently told us they could seat 8 and made no mention of this split but we decided to stay.About an hour in I asked for a cheap shot and was told the cheapest well on the whole menu was 14. I decided not to get one and then the bartender came back to flag me down and told me he could get me tequila for 10. I ordered 2 and when the bill came I was charged 12 each. There was a Covid surcharge plus an additional 20% surcharge that no one ever mentioned and that I didnt see on the website. I didnt notice and tipped the standard 20% I always tip since the bill had several check mark boxes asking for a gratuity (even though they already got me for 20%). As this is a bar, its easy to imagine a lot of people dont notice this fine print when paying, tipping and leaving which means they are just scamming people for additional tips. If I hadnt taken a picture of my reciept for venmo purposes Id never have noticed. Finally when we all left and met up back in Wrigley my cousin informed me that the bills each of our tables were presented when we gave the waitress our cards were the correct bills but that the waitress messed up and swiped my card for their bill and v.v. considering it was a 5-3 split between our 8 top I was pretty offput hearing this information.I dont think lied is the right word but taken advatage of definitely fits (except for the shots where I was literally lied to on price). Ive only been there once and I wont be back.Oh and they had tons of cheap food listed on their online menu that wasnt available when we got there. Also why in the world are they marked $$ on google? If your cheapest drink on the whole menu is 14 then you are at least a $$$...

Food & patio waitress was amazing, however, overall customer experience was horrible. My party of 3, including a birthday girl, could not reserve for the rooftop. We agreed to have appetizers on the patio for at least an hour while we await a walk-in rooftop table. Long story short, it’s nearly 2 hours and at least 20 customers have left the rooftop and we have yet to get a space. Spoke to a manager Joey & he did not seem remorseful until we asked for our check to go. I would not recommend this place!!!

We went there on a Monday to to get some after work drinks, it wasn’t busy but the drinks we had in mind were only sold during brunch on the weekends which was a huge disappointment. We decided to order from the selection they had available which was slim. I ordered the a frozen margarita and the flavor they had on rotation-was strawberry. When I went to order I was told that it was watermelon, and that changed because it wasn’t frozen. They staff didn’t seem very knowledgeable about what was available. If you are coming for pictures it has great scenery otherwise pregame before arriving

Literally over price for the experience. DO NOT RECOMMEND!! The bouncer said my partner and I have to spend $750 to have access to the rooftop. No where in the website says that! We ended up eating in the first floor and for 2 drinks and 2 meals it was over $90. It’s a scam! If you want to have a good time, stay away from this place. They are only trying to bring in a certain type of crowd. There’s so many worth it and cheaper options around Chicago. Very disappointed! Never coming back! Places like this shouldn’t be open!!

I came for a quick meal and drink after work with my coworker, and I ended up paying $75 for 2 shots and 2 drinks. I expected a lot more for $75. There was a “Co-vid 19 surcharge” which was not mentioned by the host, server, or posted on any sign. This is completely new to me, as I’ve been to other restaurants since we’ve opened back up. The music was not all that. Barley able to hear it and not enjoyable. I spent so much on drinks, I didn’t even want food after that. Also, a 20% tip was included, which wasn’t mentioned either. It wasn’t a problem, I was still gonna tip 20% or more but it would have been nice to know that from the jump. The server was sweet but I feel like she took forever to greet us and barley came up to us twice and got $10. There was barley anywhere to take pictures because it was all blocked off, and I get the precautions but if I’m paying this much I at least want to be able to walk around and take a picture of the rooftop, babe. Probably won’t come back and definitely won’t recommend to a friend. Not right now at least. Downtown 5 star hotel rooftops are way cheaper and a much nicer experience. Save your money !

He took over ID and just played with them I felt like he thought they weren’t real so I offer him a second form of Id instead he went right passed us and took two guy behind us straight to the elevator it wasn’t until I asked if we can go up too that he said to follow him. In the elevator he continued to tell me that we have a table but we can be told to leave at anytime if they wanted. On the other hand he proceeds to tell the two men that they found a table for them no problem. We got sat down but left within the 5 min because we felt uncomfortable. Very unwelcoming.

I give it a 2.5 rating. I went Joy District before COVID and we were in the lower and upstairs level for the club. The scenery is nice. Drinks were affordable, not too bad. But we didnt know there was a rooftop.Recently we were planning to put in reservations or do a walk-in for the weekend on the rooftop. RESERVATIONS or walk-ins for 6 ppl, the employee that assisted us said we would have to spend $750 BEFORE taxes, tips and fees. WHAT THE HECK? 750$????? thats crazy expensive. Meaning each person would have to spend at least 140$ for just 2 hours (COVID restrictions) We decided to not go there. Disappointed. Save your $$ & go somewhere else.

The drinks are overpriced. One of the workers took my ID and thought it was fake (im from a different state). The server barely checked on us even though they werent busy. They also include hidden charges on the bill that arent disclosed anywhere in the restaurant, like a 20% automatic tip and a covid charge. Looking at the receipt was very confusing and it felt like i got scammed. I hope this place goes out of business or is replaced with more people friendly managment. Im a laid back person but i was so upset with my experience here that i warned others waiting to be seated about my experience. If i could give 0 stars i would.

Sat in the rooftop which was a decent space. Second time I went it was more lively! Our server was great and the food was very good. The only thing I disliked about my second visit was trying to transition form the restaurant to the rooftop. They first tried to charge us to get the rooftop when we were already in the building. Ok.. last weekend my husband and I traveled to Chicago for 1st time.. and of course we wanted to have some fun on Saturday night, after an exhausting search based on reviews(lot of clubs) we ended at Joys District Club. My first impression wasn’t the best, but large line outside means I couldn’t be wrong when everyone wants to get in. Just know before you come that its very loud, so if thats not your thing or if you need to have some serious convos this may not be your place. The mixed cocktails we had were all delicious. The sake was good, but Id probably avoid the creamy one if I had to do it over again. I was slightly surprised they didnt really seem to have a warm sake option. The food was a great mix of Japanese and American. Theres some fancier stuff and a good amount of seafood, but there were other options if thats not your thing. My advice, dress up a little before you show up. I wasnt dressed poorly, but definitely felt a bit under dressed (or maybe I should say over dressed since much of the crowd had legs and or arms out an.about even though it was chilly outside). I wished I was fancier when I got there is what I mean. Also, use open table to make a reservation. There was a line at the door, but we made our way right in to our table without the line. I went to Joy District on January 12th for my friends 30th birthday. Things started off just fine, waited in line for about 5-10 minutes, got in, ordered some drinks, and enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately, things went downhill towards the end of the night for our group. We first had some trouble getting a couple of friends in, despite there not being a line. The bouncers insisted that they needed to pay cover to get in/go upstairs. Our contact at JD told us there was no pressure for a wristband, and could come in and go upstairs or remain downstairs as we saw fit. After my friends wife went outside and pleaded with the bouncer for about 20 minutes or so (snowing outside, btw), we were finally able to get our friends in.As the night drew to a close, our friends were all walking out and one of the bouncers (didnt catch his name) said dont let anymore Indians in right in front of all of us. Honestly, I cant believe he could possibly say something like that to us, especially in a city like Chicago (especially in 2019...as a human). We werent being disruptive. We went in, drank, danced, paid our tab, tipped our bartenders (who were great, btw), and left in an orderly fashion. No one had an issue with us while we were inside, no one had to come over and tell us to settle down, or anything. We were behaving no differently than anyone else in there, aside from being Indian, I guess.I am truly disappointed that we had to end an otherwise great night on such a low note...My friends wife has contact management about this issue, and were waiting on a response and see what action they take to fix the situation.

This place is HORRIBLE and had NO PROBLEM expressing their racism. If you are a person of color, no matter how much money you spend there, your money is not wanted, and the staff will treat you like garbage. I was having my husbands 30th birthday at Joy District, as the place we were going after our dinner in the West Loop. I contacted their event coordinator a week and a half prior to the party asking if we needed reservations, needed to meet a certain number, ect. We were coming in as a group of 40, so totally understandable if we needed anything. I cant stress this part enough, the event coordinator/ the lady who I corresponded with was EXTREMELY kind, accomodating, and kept great communication with me. She was truly great at her job. After inquiring with my group, no one wanted to commit to the $55 wristband deal, so the coordinator said via email, that it was totally fine that we didnt and if we chose to go upstairs to the second floor club, we were more than welcome to and had a reservation up there for 40. Between 10:30-11, a group of 30- 40 of us came and got in with no issues. We stayed on the first floor and since the bar was right there and the music was good, we decided NOT to go upstairs to the club part. Since our group was so large, we obviously spent A LOT of money at the bar, at minimum, $2000. It was actually a nice time because it wasnt so crazy loud on the first floor so we were actually able to catch up with the people in our group. Things took a far south after midnight. We had two more guests arrive around midnight and they were hassled by the front doormen, one whos name was Amir I believe. There was no line whatsoever, yet they were forced to wait outside in the snow and cold for 20 minutes trying to explain they were here for a party/ reservation, and we were all on the first floor. The doormen kept saying $20 cover to get on the second floor club or they had to buy a wristband, otherwise they cant come in. Again, they tried explaining that they werent trying to go to the club. Like I said, we were NEVER on the second floor,  nor was anyone trying to get into the second floor. We were more than content on the first level by the bar. Because these two friends were not allowed in, this gentleman Amir asked that they summon the hostess of the party, to come outside. So after a text from them, I came outside in the crazy blizzard and cold with no coat on and this gentleman Amir made me pull up EVERY SINGLE email correspondence (there were about 15 emails going back and forth) from the coordinator just to prove to him that we had a legitimate reservation. It was beyond humiliating going through every single message that was in this email thread just to prove we were supposed to be there, nonetheless, in front of my guests and other people standing outside. I brought in so much business and traffic that night, and this is how I was being treated. He then said, Yeah, *coordinator* (do not want to disclose her name) works for us, Im not sure what kind of arrangement she has with you. After I repeatedly said our whole group is here and we have zero intention of going to the club, he finally let us inside, after me, leaving my group and my husband whos birthday it was, for 20 minutes. With that leaving such a bad taste in my mouth, our group left around 1-1:30am. As we left, the men at the door said to eachother thinking we didnt hear them, good, theyre all leaving; dont let anymore Indians in. In this day and age, how is a comment like that considered ok for such a reputable establishment? How could racial comments be made like that to PAYING patrons who just spent so much money? Just because we are Indian, our money is not welcome there because we apparently dont meet the criteria of the doormens standards because of our skin? Joy District is such a great space, and the initial person I talked to was so kind, it is seriously such a shame that the people who work there on a day to day are so blatantly rude and racist to their guests.

Definitely one of my favorite spots to come for happy hour, such a fun atmosphere! Food & drink selections are always amazing - highly recommend the tuna poke cones, the octopus tacos, & the Mega Mule if youre coming in with a few friends.

Showed up to this place after a referral from a friend. We were there all of 20 minutes before security asks my friend to leave with no explanation. He was dancing, hadnt done anything, approached and told to calm down and then escorted out without any level of escalation. This place essentially stole $100 from us due to the exaggerated cover charge and the over zealous bouncers.

Hoped for a fun night to drink and celebrate. Instead received tasteless watered down drinks, $40 cover, empty bar yet a long line, and rude management and staff. Not worth your time or money. So many other honest establishments in the area to spend your money at.

Reading through some past reviews, it seems anyone whos tried to have a group event has had a terrible time and Id echo that as well. I know they cant just give a large group preferential treatment but I would have settled for not horrendous. Cant speak to the individual or smaller group experience. The food was actually decent though pretty overpriced tbh so thats why they get 2 stars.

Came here for a company party at night. We had the rooftop. The drinks were great, and the service was on point. Overall the place had several floors, all of which appeared to be poppin for a thursday night. Recommend fully.

Loved going here during the summer, the rooftop is the best part. It is expensive drinks and can get really crowded. If you go later at night, you may have to pay $20 to get upstairs.

Ive come to realize that the bad taste in my mouth isnt just from the uninspired and poorly executed menu or the cocktails that only rivaled those I can make myself on an airplane, but truly from the horrible service and lack of managerial oversight. Aside from failing on the most basic deliverables for any industry spot, they couldnt even succeed at the basic tenet of any industry place - anticipate your customers needs before they do, and deliver effectively and efficiently. Joy District was explicitly aware of what our needs were, and then, through manipulation and deceit, did the exact opposite in the most disrespectful fashion.

I sea of young drunk people, but its a somewhat fun area to people watch. Pricey and trendy, still better than navy pier if youre visiting the city minus the view. Well depends on the view your looking for!

Not much of a review-posting kind of person, but given our present political climate, I think its more important than ever to point out anti-Semitism. Ive been to this restaurant two separate times, and they seem to think its perfectly reasonable to leave hateful graffiti up in their mens washroom. Or, its an intentional interior decorating decision on the part of Joy District. Regardless, hopefully drawing attention here to this will push them to denounce the deplorable behavior of some of their customers. Even if deplorable IS what youre basically signing up for by going to this bar.

I had a pretty bad experience tonight. One of the custodians decided to mop the middle of the dance floor and pushed me out of the way and proceeded to mop my feet. I didnt say anything until he pushed me again to get the bar and he proceeded to call me a racial slur. I then said that he didnt have to push me and he went to get the bouncer to kick me out. Instead, the bouncer apologized for his actions and tried to accommodate my group. I appreciated that but I still do not condone what was said to me and how I was treated.

Lot’s of fun, but shoddy establishment. I came to Parlay (within Joy District) on a Saturday night for a very nice event with friends, one of whom purchased a table. I ordered 2 whiskey sodas and 1 vodka soda at the bar from a bar tender who said his name was “Casey.” He May have misheard me and delivered 5 drinks. Perhaps it was because I was in a suit, but he also charged me almost $90, more than 5 cocktails are on the menu! I asked him to correct the order and he instead brought another check for $13.15! I explained that too was wrong and he said he would just adjust the other one. Unfortunately, my credit card shows 2 charges from Parlay now, $86.28 and $13.15. I informed them and they did nothing. Disappointing they would do that.

The worst service ever! I asked for a menu at the roof top bar and the bar tender was extremely rude and basically said no menu. I left my jacket at the roof top bar accidentally and came back two hours later to look for it and it was gone and when I asked the bartender at the rooftop bar if someone returned it or they found it - they were extremely rude and said no there is no jacket here. No empathy or emotions on their part. They did not make any effort to look / search for the jacket or see if someone may have repoted a lost jacket. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone as the customer service is terrible! So only go if you want to be treated poorly!

Absolutely terrible customer service. Came here as a part of a large group (approx. 150 people) to celebrate an occasion. We had previously contacted them to let them know, and work out a deal that we would be allowed entry, have some bottles, etc. Unfortunately, around an hour and a half in to the night they started to refuse entry to our group and demanding we pay $40 cover to get in. Additionally, none of the additional services we had agreed upon were ever done. The manager we spoke with continue to backtrack saying none of these things were ever agreed upon, despite us having e-mails explicitly stating what was agreed upon. Expect this place to be another flash in the pan and closed within a year like many of the other clubs that open in chicago with poor management. Good riddance.
