Have been coming here since high school in the 70s. A favorite place for hiking, mountain biking, and swimming.
So it was fun wanted to see how my stock 15 forester would do i found alot of enjoyment here stock will be better when i step up my game just wish there was a water crossing to splash in
This is a great hidden trail. Lots of wild life and floura to see and explore. The trails are thin and over grown in some places, but if you want to feel out in the woods and far from it all this is the perfect place. My daughters were able to walk it with no problem and they enjoyed all the beautiful flowers and fungi growing all over.
Many nice hiking trails. All fairly level.
Great hiking and I would recommend it to everyone
I just bought a 2005 Toyota 4runner and wanted to test its off roading chops. Its stock so I wasnt looking for anything crazy. The dirt roads here were a challenge and Im very happy the 4runner has plates on the undercarriage. I did hit a few hidden rocks and stumps. These roads are not meant for the soccer mom SUV. Helga (my appropriately named 4runner) and I will be back.
I couldnt think of a single negative thing to say about this place. What stands out the most for me is the complete absence of litter. It has the most incredible views and the hike to the top is just the right amount of a challenge for anyone of any age. Highly recommend this beautiful place.
Really nice spot until people from out of town come around. Year after year the park is flooded by inner city residents who don’t care about the park and trash it. Cars fill the place and it’s left with trash everywhere from them. When locals or civilized people visit it’s one of my favorite lakes in the state.
Beautiful state treasure. Its one of our most favorite places. Theres so many mushrooms to forage this time of year. Theyre popping up every where. Theres always plenty of wildlife to see to.
Good (and tough) hike. Uphill and downhill halfway through. But with it. Has a cave at the midpoint thats interesting. Then head back to your car.
We tKe our cub scouts camping here every year. Great camp site for youth with lake access. The sites are clean and pretty flat. There were sometimes groups at the site blaring loud music but overall most other guests are quite respectful. The hiking trails around the lake are great for any level. There are harder hikes above the lake.Bring a pole or a kayak and have fun
Excellent Mexican style food. Great service. Ask for a Margavesa.
So the trails here are well blazed, but I actually have fault with their maps that are available. The actual map you can get online is not color coordinated to the colors that are blazed on the trails, and that is a big no no from someone who is a professional cartographer. Beautiful park, just please take measures to not get lost.
Meh... Just a typical Connecticut park
Some of the best trails nearby. You can hike for hours never walking on the same trail. If your into geocaching there are some good little caches to find!
One of the reasons I moved back to CT was the deep and beautiful State Parks that have been preserved here since I was a child. STILL beautiful and lush. Enjoyable day hikes. To those visiting...PLEASE do NOT litter in CT State Parks. Thanks!
This used to be such a beautiful place that my grandparents used to bring me too when I was little. But now people are leaving trash and wrecking it. So sad. Once it became “free” to get in as a CT resident, (they steal the money from everyone’s vehicle registration) no one cares about taking care of beautiful places like this.
Bring back public camping for the taxpayers and it wouldnt be just a waste of beautiful land.
Great place to ride a bike on the closed Road lots of hills.
Visited their Chrysler/Jeep/Ram / Dodge store. Nice place. Friendly helpful people!
Wonderful walking, poor trail marking. Take a photo of the map before you go in but expect to find one or two surprises. The landmarks are well worth seeing. There are some real titanic boulders hidden within, and plenty of wildlife.
Good trails for hiking/mountain biking. Some trails can be technical.
Peaceful..
Beautiful, beautiful view travelling the northeast, the treea are so pretty.
Went Quad Riding True here Nice place to go With family and friends.
Good trails and large area. so big that you rarely meet someone else.
I was never even here! Im still giving it five stars! Why did this come up on Google Maps?
Excellent place for hiking and fresh air.
Extensive trails with a variety of ecosystems. Cool rock formations. Nice place to hike. Mostly flat with some small rolling hills.
Great place for a hike of any difficulty level. Beautiful area. Bring the kids and your dog!!
Beautiful place, but theres trees everywhere!
One of fav parks to visit...the lake is wonderful
The second largest state forest in the state with a lovely lake and trail all around it. A second body of water is the reservoir and well marked, no boaters allowed please. There are two sites for youth groups to camp by the lake and a lean to or two at each site. Many people come here to hike, swim, mountain bike, ride horses, run dog sleds, cross country ski, snowshoe and of course fish in the stocked lake and hunt mushrooms. It is regularly patrolled by park rangers. Many people just stay on the gravel roads in their activities. Others follow the blue trails mixed in. Spring time brings a glorious display of mountain laurel, the state flower so just enjoy. My husband travels through here every day and has for 25 years. He says it is his nirvana. Rangers and forestry students come in often to manage the forest and another area has been set up as a wild duck refuge where you just might see a blue heron. In the Fall hunting is allowed, bow and arrow, black powder and then shotgun if thats your thing. Turkey, deer, coyote, furever cats abound. No bears yet but a mouse was killed on the highway near it so they have arrived from up north.
Lots of little lovely trails hidden off of a few well maintained dirt roads. easy to get lost here for a day.
Great Madison Land Trust hiking trails in this area. Diversified terrain and foliage.
It was so interesting and I would definitely recommended for anyone.
Nice state park, swimming, hiking and fishing available.
This is a great place to take the family!
Love being out in nature. great trails
Great forest to have a lovely picnic with friends and family.
A great and magnificent place that is full of nature. There are many geo cashes on premisis. I love going out there about every sunday and just enjoying the nature and beuaty.
Great place to hike. A little wet and muddy after the recent rain storm. Easy to follow trails
Great park. Good for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. No major elevation change with plenty of trails
A great forest for an awesome retreat with friends and family.
Good place to take a walk
My dog loves this place! Water for my Labrador retriever to romp through and so may different trails! You never see the same thing twice! Awesome place!
Plenty of forest service/fire road or whatver you call hard packed dirt forest roads where you are from. Some off roading to be had, of questionable legality for 4x4 road vehicles. Share the road, saw quite a few dirt bikers. A quick wave and pulling off to the side for them to pass when possible makes for a very friendly crowd. Gets muddy after a rain; make sure you are properly equipped if venturing off the mains.
Miles of wooded trails to explore
Great trails, clean park. We parked at the commuter lot right off exit 8 and walked down the street to the trail head. Lots of butterflies out this week (went on Sat 7/16/16). Had a great time!!
#nature,,, great piece of stateland, well marked blue trail lots of wildlife aslong as your quiet and take the time sit quietly n watch closely! Mornings are great to get in the woods while still near dark n listen to the woods come alive!!! #exploreoutside!!!
Wonderful place .
Had to take my daughter here this past winter to take some nature photos for one of her classes at school. Its a good thing I drive an AWD Subaru cause when we pulled in there was still snow and A LOT of mud on the main trail. I didnt see a parking area so we decided to drive in a little further then a little further and the trail started getting narrower and narrower with very deep mud and nowhere to turn around to go back. As we got deeper into the forest/park we didnt know if the trail lead out or not and by this point my car was completely covered in thick mud and our speed was only a slow crawl. After about 15 minutes or so we FINALLY came out the other end into civilization so I pulled over to try and clean my windshield and windows off and my daughter finally took her pictures and added a pic of my car completely covered in thick mud to her project which she aced btw! Lmao! What a day and what a drive! I plan to go back in the Summer to enjoy the park mud free. Definitely recommended for anyone whos into nature, hiking and especially MUD BOGGING! LOL!
Great place for a picnic, canoe or kayak, and fishing!
Hiking. Biking. Swimming. Grilling. Camping. This place has it all
Great hiking spot. Miles of trails. Diverse terrain. Great views. Lots of privacy.
Whats not to like about the great outdoors?
This state park is one of the best places I have ever been here in CT.
The trees did a great job of providing oxygen and shade, however the birds squawked at inappropriate times and the squirrels were a little too nutty for my liking.
Flat and not challenging, beautiful trees and walls
Visiting state parks is on my must do list and this park is a gem.
One of the only public roads to take a 4wd on. Neat roads and not too serious.
Great place for hiking, picnics and exploring nature!
Good beach, free parking, kid friendly
Great place for a family outing...
Was a beautiful hiking experience.
Great place hiking or Mtbiking. Lot of trails. Trails range from easy to technical rock gardens
Nice park. The lake is good to swim in in the summer and also good to hike around.
The Beaty
Beautiful hiking place.
Easy parking, well marked trail. Some small litter here and there from savages and dirtbags but overall a nice escape right on Rt 80
Nice drive from East Haven.
Not 148 rt. Black pond I guess is called cockponset.
Basic state park, and to the Google reviewer that keeps marking this as a National Forest please stop that, this is a state park.
Good place for some afternoon fun. Small beach area for swimming, fun jumping area by the dam, plenty of camping spots, and a large lake fun for kayaking and canoeing.
Great place to hike and walk the dog. Keep your dog on leash
I dont even know where that is!
Beautiful, well maintained hiking trails
Trails and nature... A combo you just cant beat.
Nice area for hiking hot a lot of miles in this park.
Beautiful hiking
Very beautiful place to take the family
Beautiful state forest, hiking trails, hunting and full of animals .
Nice place.
Come visit my neck of the woods
Hate to see such a gorgeous place getting destroyed. CT needs more deep officers. There was garbage everywhere. Every year after the summer crowds leave my brother and I hike and pick up trash. Last year was insane. 6 bags each!
Nice place to visit...
Love this hiking place. Lots of trails and water.
