Absolutely my favorite place in Charleston. I am consistently taking classes here and before the pandemic I was always going to the shows. Even during the pandemic, theater 99 has made shows and classes easily accessible online.They are willing to try new things and do everything in their power to bring light into these dark times through comedy.This staff has honestly changed my life.They take improv seriously and want you to as well.When they are not doing shows they are investing the rest of their time and energy into their students.When I was taught to scuba dive, I was taught as though my life depended on it. It is the same with the staff at Theater 99. They teach improv because their lives truly depend on it.If it were not for improv comedy and the staff at Theater 99 I do not know where I would be. I love this place with all my heart and will do anything to support them.

Always a fun time to be had and considering half the time shows are free youre literally stealing from them. But theyre cool with it, so its ok. But youre definitely a thief. Accept it. But accept it with laughter. Because theyre funny. Thief.

The show was really a lot of fun! Didnt know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. I want to say its a hidden gem, but the house was packed! So, its probably not so hidden. Word of advice it so definitely get there early (30 minutes or so). Seats are first come and if you get there just before showtime, you might not get seats together. Fills up fast!

I love this group! I have seen a lot of comedy all over and this is one of the few seriously laugh out loud groups I have seen.

This is a small, upstairs venue. I had a great time and Ill definitely return. Snacks were priced right, but the beers were a bit pricey.

Absolutely great time and experience. Cute older theater environment with tons of seating that all provide great views and perspectives of the stage. Performers are great at their job, making the show interactive and even crowd control when a few tipsy people get a wee bit out of control. Snacks and drinks also for sale, and facilities were clean and provided a comfortable environment. Highly recommend for tourists or locals. So glad my husbands cousins told us about this place and that we went by. Great for families, date night, and anyone who likes to get a good laugh in. Go!

I stumbled across the sign for this theatre on my way back to my hotel. I quick bought my ticket on the website, and made sure I had cash for the bar. I arrived early - as suggested in other reviews - and was there just before the theatre doors opened at 7:40. Bar prices were very reasonable, and as I was on my own I had no trouble getting a great seat.You really cant beat three acts of improv for $5. I would return the next time Im in Charleston, and recommend to others!

This is the most fun you can have in Charleston! Tickets are affordable and you get way more than you pay for. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating! Just a heads up though- this is NOT “stand up” comedy or a “comedy club” to get drunk and disorderly in! The improvisers are artists and work really hard to pull these incredible shows off for the public nearly every night of the week!

Double your health insurance before going to this small in size but big in laugh location. Ive been to plenty of comedy clubs, but nothing that made me laugh this hard for $12. A friendly warning to not park in the back lot (they tow) and to be cautious if you stay for the after skits. The new material is not guaranteed at the same rate.

Heres what I liked and loved ..the location was unique ..at first glance the staff was very nice or as first appearances go they said hi ..informed us were to go into theater..we got drinks (there is beer wine and water ) we used the bathroom and sat . the show started and as soon as it did the staff began to shush us ..THIS IS WERE THEY LOST STARS . IT WAS A COMEDY CLUB FOR CRYING OUT LOUD PEOPLE TALK AND LAUGH . IT RUINED THE SHOW .THEY WHOLE TIME THEY SAT(THE STAFF) BEHIND US SHUSHING US . WE were not being too loud or ridiculously obnoxious ...big downer

We go every year and the cast greets us by name and a big hug. We also attend other shows that they put on during the year. There shows are R rated so be prepared for anything and everything.

This place is a riot! The performers certainly know their craft, and everyones rather friendly. If you blink youll miss it, but its there.

Fantastic laughs and class!Been a couple of times for their friday shows, and just took a drop-in improv class--it was awesome!! Would highly recommend to anyone interested in improv or playing pretend after a long day of work. No experience required at all! Will definitely take more classes when I get the chance.

The Have Nots were so funny and put on a fantastic improv show!

So fun! Saw them perform with our kids (ages 11, 15) on kiawah and it was a blast for all ages!

The show was funny for sure but we got shushed the whole time. For what? For laughing and being interactive? Please put microphones on the people on stage so we can laugh and they can still be heard. We missed a lot because when people laughed you couldn’t hear what was being said on stage. That was partly why we were talking because we were trying to figure out what was being said

Funny cast! Great concept! Had a good time! Language got a little too R rated for my taste, but funny stuff! Would not recommend for teens.

Performers were entertaining. Part of the audience never stopped talking. Not certain how secure the seats are.

The improv troupe was very funny. I really enjoyed the fact that they didnt get nasty or too political. I went with a large group and I appreciated the non-divisive humor. Their sound system was a little wonky, otherwise theyd get 5 stars from me. Excellent night- I recommend it highly!

I saw one man star wars. Absolutely amazing. Very funny. Cool atmosphere in Theatre 99, very trendy. The bar was minimalistic while still somehow having everything you would want. If you havent been here, go here.

There were some hilarious moments, but overall I wasnt too impressed by the improv. The game involving reading texts from audience members phones seemed a bit too restrictive to build a good scene. Also, I was a little thrown off by the fact that the audience and performers were entirely white. (One or two Asians, but no one with darker skin.)

Always funny, absolutely love Wednesday nights Laugh for Lincoln (or is it a Lincoln?) - five bucks gets you an excellent dose of comedy. Drinks are cheap, seats are comfy and Ive always left with a smile on my face.

Hilarious improv actors and a great crowd with some funny suggestions. I love the amount of crowd interaction they have, really makes everyone have a great time! Highly reccomend!

This is by far my favourite place in Charleston. The actors are great and everyone always has a great time. Probably the most fun that you can have in this town. I always make sure to get out there at least once each time Im in Charleston, and more if I can. Having lived in Charlotte and now Indianapolis, I must say the improv in Charleston ranks at the top of the list. Living as far away as I do now, I miss Theatre 99 and look forward to each time I get to go.This is the place to go when youre in Charleston. Do whatever you have to do to get out here--rearrange your schedule, disown your family, whatever it takes. Itll most assuredly be worth it.

A really cozy place with comfortable seats and amazing on-set hosts. None of the acts seem unnatural or forced, and its just really well executed in general.

Welcoming cast and crew with some of the most witty acting that I have experienced. Definitely a place to visit for a good laugh!

Its off the beaten path down an alley way in back of a bicycle shop you will find the stairs to this fun theater. These people are hilarious. Inexpensive fun.There is a lot of audience participation that makes it so interesting and lots of laughs. . .

Great for a different date night. Theatre 99 offers very funny improv comedy for a reasonable price. I have been several times now and some nights are definitely better than others. The last time I went on a Friday it was absolutely hilarious. A lot depends on the actors, the crowd and the drinks. Speaking of which, drinks are very moderately priced. I suggest getting a bottle of wine for 2 people--just $20. Bring cash, no credit cars are accepted. They have an ATM but you pay a fee for it.

Have been here before, love this improv troop. They keep it mostly clean, could have cleaner language but definitely not near as bad as Ive seen for these types of performances. Place is tricky to find, make sure to note website directions. Show up early enough to get good seats - half hour was right for my party of two. Like that theyre not pushy with their volunteers.

Theatre 99 is awesome. They have great unique shows playing all week. Their improv usually has us laughing as hard as possible at least a few times. Definitely worth the visit.

Such a good place and very cheap considering that it is in Charleston. Went to see the impromptu comedy and it was great had a good laugh. It was a bit hidden from view though and could easily be missed as it is behind some of the buildings but a great night for a great price .

The best place in Charleston to tickle your funny bone. There are improv classes on offer too. I great way to spend your Monday evenings and get some good ol dose of improv.

Some guy was puking on the stairs as we were leaving. It really give you the back alley vibe when finding this place, but the have nots are hilarious.
