Beautiful, historic, serene, informative, nicely kept old plantation in Broadfield, Georgia. They have clean restrooms, nice & quaint gift shop & a little museum. We watched a 15 minute explanatory video on the history. They have a tour guide to walk with ya around the property. The Live Oak trees are amazing & have Spanish Moss perfectly glazed all over them. Theres a tree thats over 800 yrs. old!Im here with my family of 5. My husband, myself, & our 3 sons ages 14, 12, & 10. Were from Cleveland, Ohio!
This place was a nice stop on our way home to Florida from Georgia. Got to get out and stretch our legs while learning a good amount of history. The tour is mainly self guided so you are able to take your time and look around. Definitely worth the stop.
Be sure to wear your bug spray and dont skimp on the DEET! Mosquitoe city! But, what can you really expect from a rice plantation? The old homestead is really neat to walk and imagine how life was back when the plantation was operational. This is NOT your Gone with the Wind style plantation. This was a working farm. So expect to see how they lived and worked!
Wonderful historic location. We went for the haunted night tour and we were not disappointed! They dont do any sort of gimmicks where they jump out at you or tell silly stories they retell real events that happened and real sightings of ghosts that have happened on the plantation. You definitely learn a lot from the tour. I definitely felt really creepy feelings walking around outside at night and would recommend sticking with the group if you are easily spooked or have a sensitive sixth sense
Beautiful place for walking or for learning about local history.
The plantation is not that impressive, but the trees are. There are 500-800 year old live oaks. Just beautiful. I think the state is trying to improve the quality of the exhibits and the history lessons. Good picnic grounds for families.
Great place, great history. A must visit if you visit the Brunswick, GA area.
Its American History. They have some of the most beautiful old trees!
Met a very pleasant and informative volunteer and her husband. The trees on the property are amazing. Im glad I had the opportunity to go there.
This very historic plantation is being well preserved and presented. Well worth visiting if only to walk through the live oaks and envision the past.
VERY interesting and not a typical tour...more like a chat with someone with a lot of knowledge.
I love going in there little museum an then walking out to see the big house an the old slave houses. Its like stepping back in time. It was an old rice plantation its nestled on 1500 acres better wear your sneakers as theres a lot if walking. Plus there events they have during the holidays..The Halloween festival is great.. Bring the kids plenty of things to do..
Trails are not kept up, boardwalk was closed and still had to pay full price.
Very informative for the kids and myself! Scenery was beautiful
This is an actual plantation that was given to the state of Georgia when the last of the family members died. The house and grounds have original actual furnishings and equipment. Theres a good video introduction I was at plantation and farming in the area. Slavery is disgusting how it was used and affected the area.
Beautiful plantation$8 to get in includes a small gift shop and museum with a video and a guided tour of the house.
Interesting history of a local rice plantation. Nice gift shop and museum with brief film presentation. Partially guided tour of the home
Very beautiful well preserved
A great place to go tour, there is some great Georgia history here. Also the most beautiful live oak trees over 200 years old
So much history and beauty!!
Great visit, tour of the house, beautiful grounds.
Wonderful. STAFF GREAT. Experience was very good. Beautiful place to visit.
So much history. Staff knowledgeable. Great to just walk around and ponder.
Beautiful history site
Alot of history here and some pretty spots to visit or to take pics or just to take in all the pretty views!
What a unique way to celebrate and bring in the New Year. Hoping to get back soon during the day time hours.
Loved the history behind this house. Great place to take the family when teaching them about Civil War and post Civil War history.
To know this place is still standing after the Civil War is awesome! So much history preserved! Loved touring the house seeing the furniture all still in place, and walking the grounds. The view breathtaking!
We had a great time on the New Years eve tour.!! Really enjoyed it.
They have one slave cabin left so they decided to make half of it the restrooms. Thats how much they thought of us. Not one item left of slaves to put on display. All you see is one picture of one man who was the servant of the house. This plantation house 325 slaves and Im just shocked its not one thing on display besides the slave cabin turned into half restroom. Shaking my head thats the good ole south for you.
Nice video and tour of this plantation. Interesting history of the sisters who ran it.
Just beautiful grounds. We did not give this place the time it deserves.
Nice place to visit for a good walk & tour. Dogs are allowed but not in the main house for the tour. Bring plenty of water if you go in summer as it gets really hot.
A short drive off I95, and well worth the stop. It may not be your typical idea of a grand plantation. However, all the furnishings are standing exactly where they always stood. This is a time capsule of a bygone days, when rice was the top crop in the south.
Beautiful place lots of history
Beautiful grounds, well-manicured and well-maintained. The numerous oak trees with hanging Spanish moss are great and create that picture-perfect image of the Georgia coast. The only problem we ran into was the swarming horse flies. The park has traps set up all over but theyre losing the battle, unfortunately. The museum and gift shop had a great deal of information and interesting finds. We have the Georgia State Parks annual history sites pass so our admission was included. The house and outbuildings were neat and the ranger who conducted the tour was informative.
Sweet. Very interesting. Self guided tour, except for house, which has a tour guide.
We had friends in from Ohio last week. We were going to let them do the tour by themselves since we have been five times before. But when we heard Tina was giving the tour (someone different), we decided to go. So HAPPY we did!!! She was so informative and we saw rooms of the plantation we have not seen before. Please keep Tina!
Awe man. This Place has some weird energy here. I recorded a sound bite of some chains rattling over here. Spooky place
Beautiful place, rich with history.
Awesome adventure. The trees are amazing. Staff was so nice and helpful
It was very good! Enjoyed the visit very much
A piece of history. Great tour of the home. Guide gave great talk on the house and property of life in the olden days.
Just love the way the trees look here with their beauty and the Spanish moss hanging down. The film in The Visitor Center is nice Just wish wed been here in cooler weather.
Very good your. Beautiful plantation.
A look back in time - very well maintained
The people leading the tour were great. The people in the house giving even more information on the house were good as well.... HOWEVER.. there were two people in back of the tour that kept pushing me like I was cattle.. . I was told one thing by the tour guides wife and the fat guy in back was telling me I couldnt, ( example - sitting on a tree branch ) .. after the tour. We were told we could stroll around on our own and look the place over, ( as far as I heard, no time limit was set ) being a history buff thats exactly what My fiance and I did.. .After exploring the dairy barn, we went to see one one the huge oaks.. at which time the fat guy ( wish I had caught his name so I wouldnt have to use that description ) .. came out of the dark and asked in an accusation kinda way what we were doing with the water system.. what water system ? All we saw was a huge tank on the way to the huge oak. Then we were informed that we had to go and leave..Cant help it that as history buffs we stayed longer than the others. But his rudeness the entire tour was seriously uncalled for ... Im guessing he has a thing against long haired guys who are also 10 year Army veterans... Not to mention My fiance works for the Glynn county sheriffs Dept.. somebody needs to either put a leash on him and the woman with him or just remove them from the tour.. their attitudes sucked and at no time were they of any help..Other than for those two.. it was great
Well worth the price to get the tour and hear of the past.
It was a learning experience for us we enjoyed it
Informative.
Interesting historic location. There is a tour of the home (not the original plantation home). The guide is knowledgeable. The home was set up to allow tou to actually view it in the whole. Compared to some homes in savannah, this one allowed more to be seen.
Very interesting. Nice look into a bygone era. Lots of walking.
This was well worth my visit. Everything was so well preserved, and i learned some history. Thank you.
It was cool getting see the history of the Plantation and how people used to interact back then. We could still learn from that today!
Had a wonderful time touring this plantation! Lots of history, people dressed in period clothing, lots of fun!
On Anchor. Beautiful place.
We had a wonderful very knowledgeable guide. We were able to wonder at our own pace. Thank you.
E-Z Parking, nice Welcome Center with informative staff and artifacts. Fascinating history and the house itself and absolutely stunning grounds. Great for historical tour would also be a great venue for a function.
My fiance has been wanting to go on the ghost tour for over 2 years. However, as a truck driver we never got a chance until tonight. I will say that the Manager, his wife and some of the volunteers were wonderful and truly seem to enjoy their jobs. However, there was an overweight, older white male who was rude and belligerent to my fiance more than once. He accused my fiance of not paying attention to the presentation that he paid $15 for. He also accused both of us of messing with the water supply while we were exploring the grounds which we had been told we could do after the presentation. He then yelled at us to leave and go home. If these are the volunteers they are going to continue to use, I wouldnt waste my money. Its a shame because this could have been an enjoyable time and we had intended to return.
The Hofwyl-Broadfield plantation is an excellent value. The admission fee includes the museum which features an excellent film about the plantations history, a guided tour of the plantation farm house, and self-guided tours of the dairy, servant quarters, and the rest of the outbuildings. The expansive areas of the ancient and majestic live oak trees was truly amazing.
Beautiful historical rice plantation and dairy farm, that remained I one family for five generations... Gorgeous coastal property... another must see...
I have visited here 4 times. Each time on the way to or from vacation in Florida. It is a very interesting place to visit, and the massive old Southern Oaks with Spanish moss are a sight to see. I always imagine coming in the front drive as a horse and buggy 200 years ago.
Very nice friendly staff rich in history
Very nice place. People are very friendly. They did and outstanding job of reenacting the time frame of the Civil war
Charming, beautiful, words cant describe, must see.
Lots of history and even close to my home. You can spend hours just walking the property
What a great taste of history
Interesting place to visit - especially when they do the Civil War exhibits in December...
Fascinating glimpse into history well presented and explained
The grounds are gorgeous. Love oaks every where. Large magnolias are also on property. The guided house tour leaves little to desire. It’s all about Ophelia and how she lived in the 60’s till her death. Maybe it was our tour guide, a semi retired history teacher (the irony is not lost..) who injects her opinions more often than facts about the property and going on’s of the day to day of the actual plantation. Unfortunately you can’t go in the home without doing the tour....
Interesting part of Georgia history
So much to see and learn about the history of plantation life
It was as if the family who owned it had just walked away.
Live the plantation the tour guide Tina was extremely knowlegeable, lovely place and the gift shop and the movie were great
If you just want a beautiful place to look around for a few hours there is no better place. If you want to really experience it you have to check out their museum and informative movie. From there its a short walk down a shaded path through a series of their beautiful Live Oaks. Once you get to the end of the path you can see the house to the left, and several old out buildings in front of you. Near the house there are several trees that rang from 50-800+ years old (or so they say). The tour guides start every hour on the hour and are all great people for the job.
Nicely kept but not much time to spend. Price to be a little much but park was nice.
Great place. Beautiful huge Oak trees. Nice walk to the historic home. Knowledgeable guide to tell us all about the place. Well worth the money.
Beautiful grounds, so glad we found this gem!
Great place. Fabulous live oak trees. Wonderful cars at their car show.
Great place for a family day great piece of history
Attended the Easter Egg Hunt and the kids had a great time!
Definitely worth the admission. The museum is informative - including a video - about the lesser known cash crop King Rice, responsible for so much plantation-era prosperity. No punches are pulled as the plight of slaves doing this torturous labor is described in detail. The grounds are characterized by the most impressive collection of massive, old (even ancient) live oaks Ive seen anywhere, alongside several State of Georgia champion trees of other species. The antebellum complex on premises is well kept with all original/heirloom furniture, and the guide is entertaining and knowledgeable.
Very nice, kept just like they received it. Would go back
Great little tour!
Interesting movie, museum and grounds. The grounds are beautiful and the house with the original contents were amazing.
Just happened to be Georgias Free Museum weekend, great tour.
Relaxing and Addmorable Historical Site
A wonderful place to visit and learn about coastal Georgias history. The volunteer in the gift shop was very pleasant and the guide at the house was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the family history and the times they lived.I encourage anyone nearby who is in any way interested in the period of history to visit. Youll learn a lot about a time that has disappeared.
Tour was great and informative!!
Lovingly preserved historical plantation with gorgeous grounds. Very educational.
My family and I loved the tour and the host from Massachusetts was phenomenal!!
Ranger Andy made my plantation tour visit amazing! His knowlege of the intimate details made slavery imaginable in a respectful way...Thank You for one of my best State Park experiences!
Good tour this AM. Very informative. 8 dollars admission. Beautiful views from house! What a gem!
Very nice place that has a lot of educational programs that you can take your children to on a family outing day. They have reenactments, refreshments, a gift shop and tours.
This is the only historic building with the original furniture. The house and grounds are well maintained. The tour guides have several good stories to tell about the family members that lived in the house over several decades.
