A really amazing piece of history, with a well set up self guided tour. Went with my kids aged between 8 and 15 and they were all entertained for hours while we walked around. The experience was made even better by having veterans on board to talk about thier experiences on board that very vessel. Slightly more expensive than I expected, but I can appreciate the cost just to keep it floating.
This destroyer is very well maintained. I was able to explore almost the entire ship, 90%. I only wish there would have been a tour guide. It is difficult to photograph all the ship has to offer while reading the guide and trying to figure out what is what. However, I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. I was in Bremerton to recreate a photograph my Granddaddy took as his ship navigated Puget Sound. I am eternally grateful to all those people who maintain the USS Turner Joy!
Absolutely one of the highlights of our trip from the UK to Seattle and the wider area. So much to see and take in, so definitely allow plenty of time to enjoy your visit. We really appreciated that we were able to explore the entire ship at our own pace and without any restrictions. We took the ferry back to Seattle, which was a great way to end a day of exploring.
An enduring part of American history, this ship turned museum is almost completely accessable, I think the only place you cant enter is the lowest deck. All others areas are open to view, even if you have to appreciate it on the other side of a chain. Your can climb ladders down from the main deck, or climb to the bridge level. Stand on the front of the how to appreciate the view of the ship.
Fascinating! Plan on spending many hours here touring the ship, inside and out. There are many different levels to tour, and youll want to give yourself plenty of time. There are lots of plaques to read and information to learn about.
Super cool experience. The ship is kept exactly the same as it once looked to give the goers an experience as close as possible to back then.
We enjoyed our visit! The guide we had the honor of meeting was a vet that served aboard during one tour in Vietnam. What a great source of information. So much to see and exploring the ship was a blast!
Great place for older kids and adults. Lots to see. 90% of ship is available. Tight spaces and steep ladders, so mobility may be an issue for some. Great place for family trip.
I love that they let you explore almost the entire ship on your own. You get to climb inside the guns, look into the extensive mechanical rooms below deck, see where the men slept and ate, look out from the bridge and many more. It feels like a time capsule. We spent 2 hours just exploring. We came early on a summer Saturday and it was not crowded.
Amazing views. The staff is great because you can see and hear the history of the ship and all that encompasses.
Awesome place to visit! So many rooms to get into, great way to extend your knowledge of US destroyers!
Very impressive piece of American history. Volunteer who served on the TJ was onboard telling is about the shop and his experiences at sea and in ports. 3 hours onboard and I dont think we saw it all.
Absolutely amazing. Loved learning the history of the USS Turner Joy.Thank you for preserving such an amazing part of our history!
One of the best experience i had ever, amazing powerful military ship, i like the place there
If youre looking for an adventure in history, this is the place to visit. Roaming around the ship on a self guided tour is a great way to kill a few hours and imagine yourself living and working on the ship back in the day of its active years. Volunteer tour guides can explain specific areas in detail. The Gift Shop has great memorabilia for retired service members and those currently serving along with some great kids toys.
This wonderful piece of history is brilliantly maintained, staffed with an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers and is a great stop on a tour of the area. Has a gift shop, and many audio and visuals exhibits. You can go into one of the turrets.
Amazing! This is a must see. We learned so much on this boat- more than any class could ever teach your kids. Our kids loved going up in the gun, seeing the bunks, and driving the ship the most, but the whole ship with all the stories is a great experience.
Absolutley loved this museum. We were surprised with how much of the ship you can explore. My friends and I spent nearly 3 hours going through and reading all the facts.
My grandpa was on this ship. It was awesome and you get to see a lot of the ship. Definately worth 16$
This was a great place to visit! Amazing to see the history and to appreciate these people who served our beautiful country. God bless America. And thank you to all who serve this country and defend our freedom.
Excellent tour of a 1950s Navy Destroyer, pretty much full access above and below deck. I wandered around for a good 3 hours. They have done a good job with information sheets posted at any point of interest.
Its nice to see a piece of history like this. You kinda walk around but without much guidance. It is a good photo op and there is a gift shop to take back some souveniers.
A worthwhile tour. There are audio boxes in certain places that you can press to get more information about the area. For a Naval vessel that served in the Vietnam war, most of the equipment still works and they have a working coffee machine in the mess hall as well. Most of the sections of the ship are closed off, but dont worry, I would still get lost most of the time. This really makes me think about how big a aircraft carrier is since the USS Turner Joy is just a Naval destroyer.I really hope you dont encounter this but one of the staff must have forgot to re block a restricted area as it looks like the staff live in the ship as well. I found a modem connected to a HP Laptop in the restricted area they forgot to block off.I have a lot of more pictures but I have refrained from posting it because its really great if you enjoy it yourselves!
Try really hard to be handicap accessible. Some places are off limits, but lots of areas that that are accessible. Very friendly staff, with lots of knowledge. Working bathrooms on board.
Went here for veterans day memorial. It was really nice. The the hobby store next to it was adorable and had some great gift items inside.
Loved this ship. Almost all of it is available to see and very well captioned. We spent three hours. The only drawback is the lack of accessibility. Unfortunately, I dont think theres a way to make it open to folks using wheel chairs. As of 11/15 dont follow Google directions.
My family really enjoyed the self guided tour of the USS Turner Joy Destroyer. There are very few places on the ship that are off limits, giving you (and the kiddos) access to some really cool stuff (like the big gun turrets and radar room). Having been in the Navy myself stationed on the USS America CVN-66. It was fun sharing with my kids this experience. Go Navy
Great tour! It definitely worth it. I took my Navy buddy that is from out of town to this ship. We both enjoyed it.Both of us are Veterans. It’s great the keep this ship restored so the public and veterans can enjoy it!!
Very cool museum, it was quite humbling to visit such a historical site knowing it participated in real combat.
Great access and detailed signs to guide you. I lucked out and got one of the tin can sailors to show me around. I walked away understanding the mission of the destroyer class, and why this ship is historically significant. I also have a feel for what it was like to live and work on this ship. Allow 60-90 minutes.
I love history and being able to see and touch it helped bring a touch of reality to history for me.
There is so much to see aboard the ship. She is well maintained. The displays are informative. The view from the deck is spectacular. The gift shop staff is the best!
Very fun the atmosphere around the ship is also very entertaining.
Really enjoyed going all over the ship on the self-guided tour! Educational and fun. Best if you dont have a problem going up and down steep ladders.
Cool walk through military history.
This was an amazing piece of Naval History :-) they say it was 90% available but a lot of places for blocked off so Im not sure that was correct however it was a maze well kept mechanics full of History! It is not handicap accessible and folks that cant climb really steep ladders might want to try something else...
Visited here with my father who discharged Korean navy 50 years ago.He was an engineer of the destroyer that was same like Turner Joy.He could remember every single thing about the boat and explained to us.We could access most of area in the boat including engine room where my father used to work.Salute for people who server for their countries.
Very cool piece of history! There is so much to look at. Our family spent three hours checking out everything! Very educational for non navel folks.
At first I thought it cost a lot to go on a ship and walk around, but wow! There is a ton to see. The best part is they have almost everything open for the kids to touch and play on! Most museums like this get nervous about kids, but one of the docents was telling us about party of the ship and didnt even bat an eye as my nephew started turning dials in the wall while he was talking. We spent at least 2.5 hours here and the kids would have stayed to play their games there longer.
They let you explore the ship at your leisure and have very knowledgeable staff to answer any questions or show you around if you like.
Great tour of Cold War Destroyer, bring ID or AAA for discounts
We were here for an overnight ghost hunt with Spooked in Seattle. This ship is amazing, so much history. Im not a history buff or anything, but this was so interesting to see how the sailors lived and worked on this boat. Its totally worth a tour.
The best time ever. A great self guided tour.
Great floating museum. It is a self guided tour but most of the ship was open to see. Information placards were placed throughout the ship explaining the different areas. A guided tour would have been nice.
It is worth the drive to see this destroyer ... much more interesting that the USS Missouri because you can go inside it.. Cpt Mount
I spent about 2 hours touring the entire ship, and it was well worth it. Very cool to see the inner workings of such a large machine. You get to go inside of one of the three gun mounts and other cool parts of the ship like the engine room and the bridge. The entire thing is self guided so you can explore at your own pace.
If youre interested in Naval history and Naval ships, do not miss this place. Loved it.
We explored the ship for hours. Highly educational. Even my teenage daughter liked it and teenagers dont like anything.
This is a great place to visit! Loaded with history and a fun way to experience being on a ship. My 3- year old did okay getting around, but if you have issues with climbing up and down, or being in tight spaces, this may not be worth going to. You can see a good amount of the ship without climbing, but you will miss a lot if you are uncomfortable with ladders and climbing.
Amazing tour. Well kept. Clean with helpful staff.
Fun and educational. Able to stroll around at our own leisure, no tour guide. Wish we would have taken more photos. Would have been really cool to get on a carrier.
My niece and nephews had a blast day day! This place is an amazing one. The kids enjoyed and learned at the same time. It is a very wise decision they turned this to a museum.
They put on a fantastic STEM field trip for our third graders. Very hands on, with a great presenter asking thought provoking questions to the group. The ship is very interesting with a frozen in time kind of feel.
First hand experience of being on a battleship.
Very cool self tour. Would recommend
This is a fun, self guided tour with informative and friendly staff. We enjoyed climbing up and down between the decks and seeing the different areas
They really got almost all the ship open to go through. Very interesting to see how you live on a real destroyer.
Went there in a Thursday afternoon, I was the only tourist inside the ship, super cool!
You can reach every part of the ship except thebottom level! Very exciting!
Better than expected. Spent over two hours exploring.
Went there for World of Warships online gaming Meetup excellent Museum I recommend the place for anybody it is totally worth the tour thank you
Fun tour! Interesting history. Lovely views.
Excellent tour, well worth the money!
This is a part of our military history.. The fact that we have it to share with who dont really know or care about our heritage should do some reading and then ask questions.. Dont ignore because knowing will be part of your future..
I couldnt go but the kids loved it. They said it was very interesting and they took picutres. They had lots of fun going though. Its worth the trip.
Nice museum and great self-guided tour of the decommissioned destroyer. You can walk around the majority of the ship at your pace. Highly recommend! The only real challenge will be finding parking as this is not a tourist friendly town!
Got to explore the ship inside and out. Way cool if you have the time to visit.
I waited way too long to take my family on a tour. It was especially fun and refreshing to be able to free roam anywhere we want. A truly unique Bremerton experience!
Very cool ship
History and military buffs will enjoy this example our navel past. Located in Puget Bay, near Gig Harbor in the beautiful Seattle area. You can see Mt Ranier on a clear day, an added plus.
This was a fantastic tour and would be enjoyable for anyone with a bit of interest in naval history. Rather than being a guided tour, youre able to freely walk about the ship from the bridge to the engine room to even inside one of the gun mounts. Even so, there was a staff member aboard available to answer any more specific questions not answered by the many signs on the ship.
Very good, best one so far. I was in the uscg and it was great to wonder around and got lost in the engine room. Funny just like my days on the ship. Dont let cooks below deck without a guide. Thanks
Very informative and interesting. Nice insight to the comforts of the Navy from 58 to 73.
Fun touristy thing to do. Pretty neat learning about its history. Its very well kept for how long its been decommissioned!
Took the grandkids they totally enjoyed the whole experience...highly reccomend this self guided tour
War ship. Unreal to realize the size of this ship. My husband served in brown water navy...showing me the ship by my husband was wonderful.
SOOOO SUPER COOL.I wish I had more time to enjoy it !!!
Cool spot. Just wander around and check things out. I liked the guided tour on USS Iowa at LA better but some would prefer this.
Great tourist location to spend an hour or two. Thr history of the ship is very interesting.
A visceral and tremendously educational experience. Expect to spend at least 90 minutes exploring the shio. Do not miss it!!!
Was super great! The volunteer tour guides were very knowledgeable and very helpful!
Pretty awesome tour! If you havent done so already, you should. Its worth it to see it!
Amazing to visit this piece of our American History.
Special to be able to visit a piece of history and explore everything from the actual gun mount hit by adversary fire to the control center where “the Vietnam war began”
I loved the tour of the Navy ship. You get the see the bedding area and the lunch area of a naval ship.. good entertainment if you are looking to something different than just parks and beaches
This type of thing is rare, so if you’re in Bremerton definitely go see it. It can be a bit hard to maneuver around inside, especially with ladders, and doors off the ground, so be aware. They have it amazingly maintained. It’s very fun to get lost inside and see everything there is to see!
So so interesting if you love history! Love that you can walk through almost thee entire ship
So cool. So much history, self guided tour was really great, loved the free coffee in the cafeteria:)
Best tour we have ever had!! Hector was a wonderful guide!!
Great boat /museum. The ferry ride to get here is a bonus
Was a great experience to explore an old warship. Gave me a lot of respect for the guys that lived and worked on these ships.
A great experience brought back good memories when was in the Navy has great volunteers
Fantastic self guided tour! I’ve gone twice and my kids had so much fun seeing all the different parts of the ship. Neat experience.
It is a great visit but.......beware of the musty smell if you have allergies. There are only a couple of decks that are viewable, unless you can climb very steep steps with chains to hold onto, my 11 year old son wouldnt go down. It would have also been nice to have a better map and signs in each area showing what it was for, they had some signs in some places....but had to guess in others. I feel like we missed part of the ship because it was a little confusing for a land person. It was over very priced in my opinion.
Brian was the best tour guide there. Really went above and beyond to make our experience the best.
This place is awesome. Its set up pretty much the way it was when it was in action with the exception of some information placards. The tour is self guided so you can wander around and take as much of as little time as you want. We had three kids under 7 and they did fine. Strollers and people who have a hard time going up and down extremely steep stairs wont be able to see the bridge or below deck areas.
Great historic ship to freely walk around on. Very interesting to see!
What a great place to explore for an hour or two. You can go above deck and deep below. Its amazing how simple yet complex the technology was back in the day. The volunteers have done a great job keeping the ship in great shape and true life form.
