What a fabulous space! Every summer theres a different installation. For instance, this year John Akomfrahs Purple is on view. Since I dont want to spoil the trip, I will not describe how fabulous his art installation is.Getting to the Watershed requires taking a water taxi from ICA (piece of advice: make sure to book it in advance); the trip itself makes the whole experience one of a kind. This formerly industrial space seems to be the perfect container for all forms of experimental art. It reminds me of the old ICA, before the neighborhood changed so much.Across from the Watershed you can enjoy some delicious Downeast Cider (the brewery is right across the entrance) and some Australian meat pies at KO Pies! What a treat!!
Intricate installations from amazing art series is not what makes the Watershed such a unique characteristic of the ICA.the combination of the classic canvas art, massive 6 screen movie installation, and interactive activity shaped a more holistic message from the artist. it was powerful. and this holistic approach makes this art so powerful.the Watershed is the only place i have seen truly honor the message of the artist and fully immerse the viewer in the experience.
Just like the ICA, Watershed gives an interesting insight to the issues of the modern day. While I was there, the definitive centerpiece of the gallery was Purple by John Akomfrah - this was delightfully arranged and one of the most powerful experiences Ive ever had with art. As well, the name Watershed indeed played into the theme of Purple, namely an unjust spending of large quantities of water.Practically, the water taxi rides back and forth are really nice! Id argue that it awakes a more intimate experience with the Boston harbor than by taking the metro over it to Cambridge. As well, the people at Watershed are nice at guiding you to the destination. It almost couldnt be any easier!!
The warehouse convert art / event space is a cool flex space. Liking the idea connecting front to back and access to the harbor. The ferry ride detached you temporary from the city but allow you to see the context in perspective, waterbody serve as a broad interface between two distinct neighborhood. I’m looking forward for more onsite installation to address this context specific locale.
A nice extension of the main ICA art gallery across the harbor. Its seasonal so check their website to see if theyre open on the day youre planning to visit. The art is not only beautiful but also inspiring, imparting a larger message of environmental protection and sustainability. The space is not as huge as the main gallery. You can see it all in under an hour. Admission is free, and there is a ferry connection between the two ICA locations, which is part of the admission fee for the main gallery.
The place is really cool, also the surrounding area. We got there by a water taxi from the ICA main museum, which was fun. You can also get there directly from east Boston, of course. There was only one exhibition when i visited, about climate change and humanity impact.
Not much to see here, but what they do have is worth a stop, particularly if you take the water taxi and enjoy East Boston. Purchase tickets for the water taxi in the ICA ahead of time as they are usually sold out before departure. Water taxi departs every half hour from main ICA and Watershed.
The video oversalting we saw was thought provoking and unsettling. The space itself has the gorgeous reclaimed industrial vibe yours expect. Well worth a visit.
Such a unique place...really impressed. Will definitely go back.
Very hipster place. The exhibit on global warming this August was pretty cool though and the edible plants exhibit or whatever its considered was cool too.
Cool open art space free admission as of June 2019. cool byo cafe area in the back. loved it.
Great, great space!!! It lends itself nicely to the video exhibit that was on display. It also provides a good reason to go to East Boston and see what a very nice part of the city it is, too. The area in which the Watershed resides seems to be a vibrant art scene. At times I felt the area could eventually resemble Commercial St in Provincetown (near the main docks). Only a short (and nice) walk from the Maverick stop on the Blue Line.
Interesting space, and the ride there across the harbor is worth the visit. Know that the gallery is a bit of a hike (10 minutes) from the water taxi, so not necessarily appropriate for anyone with physical issues.
Free but difficult travels. Nice views
Kind-of hidden but the interior is pretty chill. Dont expect much art here but has a relaxing theater. Like how they reused old gallons into ceiling art.
Cool space in a cool location, look forward to more multi channel films
Amazing. A must visit!!
Nice spot to look at some art. It was a little sparse inside but otherwise great!
Great exhibit: Purple!
Easily the biggest waste of time. The board members, staff, and donors who thought the ferry ride and walk from the ICA to the Watershed was a good idea must have been on crack. Even the installation/exhibition was a yawn, totally derivative video art.
Great place to learn about our planet
Very interesting location and design. Terrific. Well worth visiting, but ferry not accessible.
Exciting trip to get there. Once there, the excitement somewhat fizzed away.
The ICA Watershed is closed for the season and will reopen in May 2020.
Such a nice exhibit. The location is beautiful and theres so Much to do nearby, you can make a nice afternoon of it!
Cool place. Modern video Art gallery.
Good but not large
A fun addition to the ICA but pretty small.
Mistake in description. 1 deg C difference equals 1.8 deg F difference.
Nice little place
The boat trip over is worth it even if you dont like the exhibitions
Worth a trek to East Boston — get yourself over there and it’s free!
Simple, vast destination. Worth a visit
Great Place!
