An excellent array of historical exhibitions, supplemented by a supposedly-great (in other words, I’m sure it’s great!) collection of geographic/demographic maps and data in the research library. The staff and volunteers are AWESOME and so friendly and conversational! Will be back, very likely the next day it opens.
Not a large place, but it has interesting displays. Its focus is on local history, and it excels in capturing the Hoosier spirit. Fort the $2 admission total (for both new as and my daughter), it was a great deal. Plan for less than an hour.
A gem of a museum. I visited without expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the exhibits. One, dedicated to the RCA plant in Bloomington was an eye opener, flawlessly conceived and very didactical and entertaining at the same time. The permanent rooms are also very interesting. Shout out to the Museum shop, lovingly curated. Highly recommended.
It was a wonderful collection. The women of RCA exhibit was facinating especially since we viewed it with one of the women pictured.
My kids and I stopped in while we were in town for a event and glad we did. Not the biggest place but had some really interesting items and information about the history of the area. Which I honesty didnt know to much about. Not expensive at all so check it out if your in town.
Cute little museum. Fun afternoon visit for probably 8 and above
Very enjoyable, inexpensive & found payed parking in lot next door.
I love it here! My daughter always asks to go. They are helpful and friendly and always willing to answer questions about anything related to Monroe County. They have a wonderful Cemetery Committee.
Excellent display of women in ww two local war industries.
Very informative and interesting trip with my granddaughter. Many things I didnt know that I learned right along with her.Love all the interesting facts about Monroe county.History is always interesting but local history is the best .
Very helpful research librarian made scans of local high school yearbooks for me. Nominal cost.
I have been coming here for years, and it never fails to bring me joy. I love the permanent exhibits and enjoy seeing what the temporary exhibits are. Currently, the fashion exhibit includes the chance to dress up! Bring the whole family and be sure to swing by the gift shop.
Good museum showing history of this county.
Very interesting, lots of items nicely displayed. They change things up pretty often.
Dont miss the gift shop! There are wonderful Indiana-based merchandise, plus book resale.
This is a fantastic history center inside an old Carnegie Library. It is much bigger inside than it looks and needs a few hours to enjoy properly.
This is a great museum for Monroe County history and an invaluable resource if you are doing local research.
In September of 2012 I held a small wedding reception at the historical center. What a wonderful venue for a small reception (easily held 42 people plus the catering!). Family and friends enjoyed the museum and all its treasures. Diane, Hillary and Jenny were wonderful to work with. If I had a question Hillary was just an email away. This is a hidden treasure for Bloomington and I would encourge anyone holding a small reception, family reunion, or any other small gathering to look into renting this location.
Very surprised at the high quality of the exhibits. Saw hidtory of automobiles in Indiana, quilt display, school room from 1800s and had a quiz to see if you are as smart as a student back then.
Great community events and volunteering opportinites there. The staf are a pleasure to work with as well. Currently holding rehearsals for a play too!
Lots of info on the county
