The State Capitol of North Dakota is unlike other state capitols in terms of architectural style, but equally worth visiting. You can take a self-guided tour with a brochure you are given at the entrance. Do not forget to take an elevator to the top floor to see a nice panorama of Bismarck.
Another stamp in the boys state capitol books The elevators are a bit high tech here with a touch screen to request an elevator going up to the observatory floor (or back down). Theres a bit to see here (mostly photos and views from the observatory) and the ND Heritage Center is a quick walk from the Capitol building.Ill boost a review with pics for the heritage center separately since they are technically two separate areas.
Cool place to check out. They have a free guided tour most hours. Or you can always self-guide yourself through this beautiful building founded in hard working North Dakotan spirit. Our tour guide was knowledge, informative, and obviously very proud of her home state. Great views on the top floor.Check out next door while youre here. ND Heritage Center and state museum. Also free and really well done.
Amazing tour. The young officer was extremely knowledgeable on the history of the state and building.
Most nondescript capital I ever saw. Thoroughly badly designed
The most unimpressive Capitol building Ive ever seen, but then art deco doesnt do anything for me..and I couldnt get out because police were all over the parking lot, with cars all over and I couldnt park! lol!
Closed when I arrived, but worth the walk around. Found the heritage museum on the grounds; a great surprise.
Corruption at its finest! crooked planet dot com
Real nice area
It was a great experience of past and history....
Peacefully green space and small woods to walk in, take the capital tour to get to the top floors for a view of all of Bismarck.

Beautiful grounds for hosting activities.
Much expense .ma poor poor taxes
The state House was good with cool architecture and had an amazing observation floor.
Best state capitol in the state. The grounds are really nice and a good place to play a pick up game.
Not the typical state Capitol. The building is beautiful, but it is lacking the artwork found in many other capitols. Worth about a 30-45 minute visit.
Make sure and take the tour. It very worth the time
North Dakotas capitol may not be the traditional style that many states have but it has a charm all its own. The building doesnt have a glamorous dome or an ornate exterior but it is still a very nice capitol building. Despite being completed way back in the 1930s during the Great Depression (I believe) it has really stood the test of time. Not many buildings that old look so good. The buildings exterior is modest but still attractive. But the interior is the most impressive part of the capitol. Despite budgetary limitations the builders did a good job of including a reasonable amount of ornateness. A tour will reveal the different types of marble, etc., used to decorate the main hall. The chambers are modest but I think North Dakotans like it that way. Nearly all state offices, including the Supreme Court, are within the capitol. This makes for a lively scene even during non-legislative assembly years. The place really comes alive though during session. It is a fun place to be. The grounds surrounding the capitol provide room for events like Capital Shakespeare and for people to leisurely enjoy a nice day. Even though at first glance North Dakotas capitol may not strike you as one of the nations best, it is a very respectable capitol that is worth the visit if you are lucky enough to be in Bismarck.
I love going to the capitol grounds. Its so beautiful and the buildings have so much history. As a photographer you can always find something beautiful to capture!
This proud monolith stands tall over Bismarck, a peerless monument devoid of weakness and built upon the notion that strength is achieved through endless toil and unwavering devotion to the state. Woe to he that would challenge this towering symbol of immovable strength and absolute justice. Fool is he who believes he can escape its sight: it is always watching. It is always there, reminding us of our sacred duty to serve.
As junior high students people within our age group gathered as many as 100 kids all summer long, skating, biking, frisbee, or just went to see who was around since we had no CELLPHONES!!
The views from the 18th storey are breathtaking.
Beautiful grounds. The buildings are pleasent and the gardens make you feel peaceful.
Great tour...you get to go all the way up to the top...I think 14 floors.
Almost perfect but could have been more central and allowed dogs
Great place to go for walks at and let your dogs roam free. Come here all the time.
Beautiful campus.
Beautiful landscape, picturesque, and the heritage center is located there.
Because it is the crust and the state capital
