Three stars for now. The people who work there were extremely friendly. Very helpful. It only gets three because we couldnt go to the top because you cant social distance on the elevator. When you can I believe I might give it a five star rating because of how great the employees were
These photos are from 2015. My wife and I love this battle monument. It’s very historic and amazing to feast your eyes upon. The Bennington Battle Monument is 306 feet 4 and 1/2 inches tall and was completed and dedicated in 1891. It is constructed from blue-grey magnesian limestone. The Monument was built to commemorate the Battle of Bennington which occured on August 16, 1777, and is considered to be the turning point in the Revolutionary War. It is owned by the State of Vermont, and is supported by The Friends of the Monument, a non-profit volunteer group. A number of events are scheduled at the Monument each year, and the public is welcome.
The place is so serene. The view from the top is even more mystical especially during foliage when it seems as if someones wearing a wig of curly hair with different shades of green, red and orange. Magical
Scenic historic monument. Although the Washington Memorial is taller, this war memorial has a lot of history as well. Dont overlook it. Wish the elevator was open. :( #COVID19
A great discovery while riding around looking for covered bridges. Make time for this stop.
This is an impressive monument to those who fought at the Battle of Bennington. The battle was fought in Walloomsac, NY, approximately 10 miles to the west on August 16, 1777.The tall gray obelisk can be seen from throughout the town. It is a fitting monument to those who served our country as well as the Republic of Vermont so bravely in a battle that is considered the turning point of the revolutionary war.
The tallest building in Vermont. You can see the fall colors if you go up but its closed because of covid-19.
Interesting information about 1777 battle, but both stairs (safety, I think?) and elevator (COVID) are closed now. You cant go up to the observation deck, just view the small museum on the ground floor. Wait to go until pandemic precautions can be relaxed?
Very cool monument and a piece of history that is important to the forming of our great country . The entire area of Bennington is gorgeous. We loved the little town with the small shops and natural beauty of the mountains. It is a truly quaint village in a beautiful setting. We absolutely love the kindness of the people and even looked at moving there from Ohio when we didnt know anybody there. It is a must visit if you like small towns. Other than the cold weather, in the fall the views of the fall colors from the monument are breathtaking. Please visit if you get a chance, you will Not be disappointed.
Great place, lots of history on how the US won its independence.
I love history and this place has a tremendous story to tell. We stumbled in this place during a drive through southern Vermont. Well worth the stop for history enthusiasts and photographers alike. $5 to ride the elevator to the viewing area is the monument, well worth it for the views.
Beautiful obelisk!(Must see if youre in the area)I guess theres an option to go inside and theres a little store but those were closed.
Beautiful, but wasnt able to go inside. It was closed.
Monument is huge. Unfortunately no visitors are allowed to the top but the grounds are nice and have a good view of the surrounding mountains.
Really amazing monument, however because of Covid, we werent able to do as much. Otherwise it was great and the staff was really friendly
Very informative, just note that the viewing area near the top of the monument is closed due to Covid!
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the grounds are clean and inviting. Although guests are not able to go to the top of the monument due to COVID-19, they can view the exhibits on the ground floor. Highly recommend!
Tons of history in local area. Beautiful town.
What a great historical place for an afternoon. We found it by accident but, stopped for over 2 hours checking out the Old church and cemetery and then the battle monument. Well be back after the virus lets up so we can go up to the observation deck.
Interesting place.
Parking is a bit limited, but the monument area is well kept and beautiful to see. The neighborhood is deviatingly beautiful.I also love that they have a container for dog waste. Many parks lack this, and Im glad this one has it! It would be nice if they could get a trash can too; theres some kind of issue with people throwing out garbage in the dog trash, but without an alternative its hard to blame people for using it.Note: there are a number of private houses right around the monument. I found myself accidentally walking down someones driveway, thinking it was part of the landmark. Care and attention is needed, to ensure you dont walk through anyones lawn or garden.
Great place to see. Was busy the day I went so didnt take the elevator ride up but Im sure it would have been great.
Easy access. Closed tower due to covid
Sadly, when we came, the monument was closed. Google doesnt tell you that its closed between October and May, only mentions visit hours, so it was a big disappointment. But it looks nice from outside
Drove 30 minutes to go to gift shop and take elevator to the top of the monument, got all of the way there and it was closed at 3pm. Site said open 10 to 5. Very disappointing. Outside was okay, but definitely not worth the drive to look at it from outside.
Great view,. probably more impressive if the observation deck was open.
Couldnt go up, because of the coronavirus, but it was still impressive
Beautiful monument but the viewing tower is closed due to Covid.
Enjoyed this very much. Historically its a wonderful place to visit but even if you arent a history fan this is a beautiful place. Ride the elevator up the monument and check out the view!!
Beautifully preserved revolutionary war monument.
Amazing historic site. Worth the trip.
The Bennington Battle Monument is beautiful. The battle of Bennington was an important battle in the American Revolution that helped lead to the victory of the colonies. An amazing structure nestled in the hills of Bennington. I definitely would recommend visiting.
A beautiful view of the area, and there is a very good gift shop beside it. Easy elevator ride to the top.
Impressive monument with great, dedicated staff.
For 5 dollars you can go up to the observation deck with wonderful views! Small exhibition upon entering. Great guy welcoming you and explaining a little bit about the monument when you come in. Hidden gem!
Great monument as testimonial of a great fought battle.
I GET A KICK OUT READING THE LOWEST REVIEWS FIRST AND I FIND IT FUNNY THAT PEOPLE COMPLAIN THAT THE $5 IS EXPENSIVE FOR THE ELEVATOR RIDE. COME ON PEOPLE $5 TO HELP MAINTAIN THE SITE. DONT BE SO CHEAP. $5 DOESNT MAKE THIS A 1 STAR RATING. YOU CAN GET SOME GREAT VIEWS AND TO LEARN ITS THE TALLEST BUILDING IN VERMONT AT 306 FEET AND THE 6TH TALLEST MONUMENT IN AMERICA IS KIND OF COOL. BUT IS NOT THE TALLEST STRUCTURE. ITS THE 5TH. THE KINGDOM COMMUNITY WIND PROJECT AT 450 FEET TALL. FOLLOWED BY 2 RADIO TOWERS AND A TELECOMMUNICATION TOWER. IT IS A WONDER PLACE BUT TO LEARN THAT THEY TORN DOWN SEVERAL HISTORICAL BUILDINGS (INCLUDING THE VERMONT GAZETTE, THE HOME OF THE FIRST VERMONT NEWS PAPERS) WAS KIND OF SAD. MAKES ME WONDER WHAT KIND OF HISTORICAL SITE THIS COULD OF BEEN IF THEY LEFT THE BUILDS OR ADDED THE MONUMENT TO THE SITE. THE LADY THAT WORK IN THE GIFT SHOP WAS VERY PLEASANT, KNEW THE AREA AND EVEN THO A FEW PEOPLE ALL AT ONCE WAS POUNDING HER FOR INFORMATION SHE STAYED PLEASANT AND NICELY EXPLAIN SHE WOULD BE HAPPY TO ANSWER EVERYBODYS QUESTIONS ONE AT A TIME. PLUS THE ELEVATOR OPERATOR WAS KNOWLEDGEABLE AND FUN. I RECOMMEND THIS SITE FOR ALL HISTORY BUFFS AND/OR PEOPLE THAT ENJOY A NICE VIEW. A GREAT STOP FOR A DAY TRIP.
Great place to visit if youre in the Bennington area. Easy to find even without directions because of how tall it is! I was informed that this is the 6th tallest monument in the United States -- 306 feet tall and built from Sandy Hill Dolomite out of Hudson Falls, NY.Very friendly and informed staff, nice little gift shop, and just $5 to ride up the elevator to check out the 360 degree view from the 200-foot observatory. There are some exhibits displayed on the ground level of the monument as well as a guest book to sign. Purchase of a ticket grants you a discount to the nearby Bennington Museum, if youre interested in checking out more history.
Awesome place to visit! It is so tall and really neat to see the history inside
We were here during peak foliage season and what a lovely day it was with some of the best views around from the top of the monument. Definitely worth the lift ticket to go up.
What a beautiful place for meditation or for running or just for a stroll.
Beautiful place to visit... Well taken care of. We so enjoyed our visit here. The staff working here were the most helpful and polite! Clean restrooms. Very, very nice gift shop... Excellent selection and something for everyone!
Stopped in on way home from Bromley. The kids (9 and 11) were amazed by the scale and age of the monument itself and the visit prompted a great discussion of the American Revolutionary War. Fun and educational. Worth the stop.
Guides are very knowledgeable about the battle and monument. Elevator is currently closed due to the pandemic.
Loved visiting this historical gem while in Vermont. There is an elevator that takes you to the top of the monument to show you the beautiful surrounding areas. Friendly and knowledgeable staff help make the experience smooth and informative. Long live Colonel Warner the Green Mountain Boys!
One of the most unusual places I have ever visited. I mean that in a good way. This special gem is a sight to behold and taking a ride almost to the top of this historic structure really something you must do. It gives you a view from 200 feet above the ground of Vermont and the other surround states. There is a lot of history involved as well.
A very scenic area. Worth a 1/2 dave vist from Schenectady New York
Great asset in Bennington. Strange one way roads around the monument, drive with caution. Elevator ride to top cost $5. Great views at top but narrow windows make taking a picture difficult.
Tall monument. It was impressive.
What a great tribute to the sacrifices of the civil war! This handsome monument prominently sits tall above the tree line and offers an amazing view of the surrounding town of Bennington and the countryside. It’s great to visit at any time of the year, but the fall foliage seems to be the best! The nearby gift shop has plenty of local souvenirs to remember the area and learn about some of the local history. The poet Robert Frost’s grave is just a short walk away. The entire area is beautiful to explore and enjoy!
Due to Covid, this place was closed. But we drove by and read about the Battle at Bennington online. We so appreciate these monuments which remind us of our history.
Beautiful monument. Nice place for a quick stop
This is a neat place to visit. It only cost $5 per person to ride to the top of the monument and get some amazing views.
Very interesting. Great place to visit on a clear day. Must be spectacular in the fall.
This is a beautiful place of history and scenery. The feeling of the past as told and read is mind opening. The structure is wonderful, although I was worried about toppling the whole time. 306 feet tall, which is one foot taller than the Statue of Liberty. I guess Washington Monument is the next step up. The hill views in the surrounding her are great for photography and the lawn is great for picnics.
My first time It was awesome
Who knew this monument is the 6th highest in the US and the tallest structure in Vermont? I didnt until coming across the Bennington Battle Monument almost by accident... You cant miss what looks like a rocket towering above the trees as you drive through Bennington. Well worth a detour for the interesting history and amazing views of three States from the top of the monument
Loved going to this place when I was kid, going up top was so neat. Went acouple months ago when it wasnt open and still had a nice time checking out all the plaques. Way more interesting as an adult with the educational stuff but it is deffintaly something I remember from my childhood. All of the awesome old houses around it are worth checking out.
It is tall! And the view from the top is great. If you driving nearby worth the stop.
Even though this is not the actual site of the Battle of Bennington, it is one of the nicest War memorials from the revolution. The statues are all outstanding.
A great historical experience!
Its tall and you cant miss it if you are in Bennington. It costs $5 to take the elevator to the top. It was ok. Not great.
The view from the viewing platform in the Bennington monument is spectacular. You can see for miles.
Wasnt open because of virus. We have been there in the fall and its beautiful.
This monument has a very small museum on the base floor that wont take more than a few minutes to check out. Then ride the elevator to the viewing platform which is about 2/3rds of the way up the monument. Great views, very friendly staff. Not interesting enough to visit twice.
Because of the virus you couldnt go inside the tower but you could just walk around the grounds
It is history. Beautiful views from the top.
As history buffs, this is another American Historical location we enjoyed. Pay the admission to take the elevator to the top of the monument to get a birds eye view of the surrounding area of Bennington, Vermont from all directions. Learn the history of the monument and early America and the battle for our nations independence. A must see.
Small but loaded with history. The grounds are beautifully kept.
Great little historic stop. The view from the tower is magnificent.
A beautiful place 2enjoy the history.
Sadly, the monument was closed due to COVID, however the grounds were nice. Staff members were on site to answer questions.
Five stars, even though they were starting to close 20 mins before closing, which was a bummer. If you travel all that way for them to close shop because its close to closing...
I think it was five bucks to the top of the tower...saw it from the highway and went on a whim. It was nice at the top even in the rain.
Nice historic site to visit. The monuments and the tower offer a historical experience, plus great views of the area.
Nice photo opps, u can pay a few $ to ride up the Monument, neat views from there, then u can walk around outside, some beautiful old New England homes, also go to SVU, Everett Mansion, amazing pics of Greek / Roman Fountain in the back of property
Website says they are open and they are not. Please keep this stuff up to date!!
Nice history gem here on the way you can also go up to the top of tower and see 3 different states.
Unfortunately the elevator was out of order due to a recent storm. There was a docent at the entrance, and a few displays of important facts about the origin and construction of the monument that were enjoyable. The grounds were well kept, a few statues and plaques rounded out the visit.
Cool piece of history. Went on a whim to see a covered bridge and found this treasure along the way!
Its a monument. Its clean and the grass is green.
The first time I saw this monument it was dusk and it was all lit up, I was driving through Bennington and it really caught my attention. Unfortunately I have never gotten to go up into the monument, but the ground surrounding it have lots of good historical information.
Great view. Good place to walk on snowy days. The historic neighborhood is beautiful.
Beautiful place and the monument is nice to see. Definitely a piece of history you want to see in your lifetime!
This is a must . You have to go to the top. Beautiful views. Lots of history here.
Beautiful place to visit
Beautiful in the fall...loved the views..
Beautiful views. Definitely worth a ride to the top.
This is a very nice place to visit
