If visiting Mojave National Preserve, or just interested in getting information about the area, a stop here at the Parks Headquarters in Barstow is an excellent start. Inside, NPS employees can help answer questions about your visit. Given the desolate nature of the Preserve, this is a great place to get relevant and timely information. At 1.6 million acres of protected wilderness, Mojave National Preserve is immense. Once inside the parks boundaries, there are few places to obtain help, if needed. The Preserve does have two visitor centers -- Kelso Depot and Hole-in-the Wall. But with multiple entrances and the fact that the visitor centers are NOT located at (or even close to) any of these entrances, one would be wise to have a good map if you plan to visit the Preserve.Be well prepared if you choose to visit the Mojave Desert during the intense heat of the summer months. Besides a good map, have plenty (I mean PLENTY) of water. Also, there is no cell phone coverage within the Preserve.Besides an information counter, a small bookstore is also located within the Mojave National Preserve Headquarters building. It’s a great place to start any local desert adventure.
