So much to see in here. Beautiful art, culture and history. It was much larger than we expected, we spent a couple hours here and could have spent a couple more. We were glad to learn about the original settlers of this area, the ongoing contributions of their descendents, and their struggles for self-determination.
A fantastic collection. My favorite part about this museum is that everything in it is created and curated by the people to whom it is dedicated. It is truly a one of a kind experience as you get to see their culture through their eyes. Also, they receive a grant which allows them to be open to the public for free during the winter months which includes April when we were there, but it is definitely worth paying for and be sure to take your time!
Very friendly staff and interesting museum. We especially enjoyed the oral parts, with the different languages and music.I loved the whale part, the paintings were incredible. I also loved the childrens pictures, they were cool. The music was really interesting, especially the modern song by the kids. The canoes were impressive as well.I would say this museum is ideal for older kids (8+) and adults.
The Ghost Tour was fun and the guide was knowledgeable and engaging. We had such a great time we decided to visit the museum the next day. The museum was educational, had beautiful art and exhibits, and the staff was friendly and helpful.
Must see. Wonderful stories and the art from all of New Englands First Nation tribes. Also, read how a governor revoked a tribes river rights so a gas line can be run through the tribal lands not 70 years ago - just 2 years ago! Wonderful museum....
In a space where white colonists have spoken for Native Americans, relegating them to reservations and often silencing their voices on a local, state, and national level, this museum is a breath of fresh air. The exhibits are all presented from the perspective of the Wabanaki in Maine, the People Of The Dawn. Its truly an eye-opening visit. The entrance fee is worth the history and perspective gained by visiting, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Bar Harbor area.
Kind of a different approach to Native American museum, although was interesting. Especially good at telling about contemporary achievements. Disappointed in lack of artifacts from the past.... especially being associated with the Smithsonian.
An interesting presentation of artifacts, information and modern craft of the indigenous people of Maine and New England. Two galleries closed while they prepare for new displays.
A must see. We learned amazing things, saw amazing art, and spent some of our time with the natives of bar harbor through the exhibits of the museum. Definitely go see this.
Eye opening in the best way. If you want to learn about the culture and people of this land, start here! Presents an honest account of the challenges and setbacks faced by Wabanaki, but not at the expense of the beauty of the people and cultures that remain and thrive. Left me with hope and a new perspective.
A Native American museum that tells the story of the people in the Maine area. The echo chamber is what made our day. An interesting idea why it was built. This is 1 of 2 museums you can enter with the same fee.
I really enjoy history overall. The Abe musuem fell short. The rich history of native people in Maine was not displayed the only real history was a timeline on the wall from the 1600-current.. at eight dollars a person I would say just go on Wikipedia and you will learn much more about the Native Americans of Maine.
Wonderful educational experience. Many hands on applications for young people. Places to reflect on what has happened to the native peoples of the Northeast region.
Very interesting museum r/t indigenous Native American cultures.
Nice museum with a childrens section in the basement. It was a great break from hiking in Acadia!
Nice Maine Indian History museum.its small but done well.you can take a break from shopping.
Very interesting.learned alot there
Such history wrapped up in one location. Loved it.
They have a great collection and show it well. Well worth the money.
Fabulous, lots of history well arranged exhibits and computer presentations
Great history and material learning about the native tribes of Maine
After learning about the Indian tribes that inhabited this area we decided to visit the Abbe museum. It was full of great information and onderful atifacts. There was a great art exhibit from local students depicting their interpretationsof some of the traditions depicted in the exhibits. Was definitely worth the time.
An excellent introduction to Wabnaki culture. I especially appreciate the decolonized perspective.
Their displays are great, especially their basket/weaving displays. They are very committed to decolonizing their museum, and all museums with native goods and artifacts should follow their lead.
It’s a wonderful place, it’s deserved to take time to learn Wabanaki and their history
The Haunted Tour of Bar Harbor with Axis was fun!
Interesting but I thought they could add to it. Some of the exhibits were lacking information/ labels.
Great learning center. Displays are nice. Very educational.
The staff was really knowledgeable and helpful and the exhibits themselves were very current and comprehensive :)
Thanks for providing free EV.
Really well done. A lot of information in a small space. Decent admission charge for keeping the Indian nations alive.
Absolutely loved it. Friendly staff and fascinating exhibitions.
Well presented Indian historical museum.
Touching and important historical facts and artifacts
I really liked this museum it was a pleasure going there
Such a wonderful place filled with so much culture and beautiful handcrafted heirlooms of local tribes
Beautiful tiffany windows and pretty arched ceiling
Great museum. Very informative. Loved the atmosphere and the pictures that the native children made inspired me.
Such a nice place to learn about Native people and their way of life. Would recommend that you visit this museum at least once.
Wonderful and enlightens all.
Small subsidiary inside the park, which is actually the original Abbe museum, is much more interesting than the main building in bar harbor.
Visual displays and art from indigenous native American tribes have information that is unique to the area. I was fascinated to learn about this part of Maines history.
It shows the different Indian Tribes of Maine and also some of the products too
Very inciteful we learned alot about the native American culture in Maine.
A nice way to spend an hour. We went mainly for the event on the green in May but enjoyed the museum as well.
Very nice museum, informative exhibits
Disappointed. Meager displays. Expected more after looking at Facebook page.
Beautiful museum for the original people of this area.
Not worth the price of admission.
Learned so much
What a great way to educate yourself. Its beautiful!
Not much there. Its does get you into the other Abbe museum at Acadia, but I havent been there yet.
Very interesting and informative definitely worth checking out for an hour or so!
Beautiful museum. Not too expensive. Great space for kids.
The Emergence show is very powerful. The building is beautiful.
Informative exhibition about the history of the people who lived in the region for thousands of years.
Very well done museum.
The best ever
Great little museum, friendly staff and interesting items on display
Wonderful museum to visit
Made me aware of a natural American culture I had no idea about.
Nice place
Wonderful informative, much needed perspectives
Learn about the first peoples in Maine - The Wabanaki, a confederation of the Abenaki, Maliseet, MicMac (Mikmaq: Canadian spelling), Passamaquoddy and Penobscot. See many examples of their art and culture. Baskets, root clubs, drawings, birch bark items such as canoes and mukuks and more. Recently affiliated with the Smithsonian and full of historical treasures and current art by most of the best Wabanaki artists.
Wonderful museum for Native American culture.
Very interesting, I highly recommend visiting.
More of an art gallery than a museum. Some nice art, but not worth the admission in my opinion.
Enjoyed learning of indigenous peoples, history, and seeing a birchbark canoe.
Unconventional museum focused on presenting Native Americans from a decolonized, Native American perspective.
Museum about the art and cultural heritage, past, present and future of Wabanaki people. Downtown location mostly centers on their art, weaving, and who they are today. Sieur de Mont Spring location is all about the archaeology, arrowheads, and pre-contact past. Visiting Downtown first gets you into SDM location free, Visiting SDM location first gets you a discount on Downtown tickets- but its not free. Go to Downtown first. Not really great for small children, but older kids and those interested in Native American history and the regional/state history of Maine should go.
Amazing! A Must visit if in the Acadia np area
Terrific native story teller and singer
Great tours
So pleased with this museum that highlights the native culture (which is often portrayed in the wrong light)
Small display. Can use ticket to visit Abbe museum in Acadia....more artifacts there.
This is an excellent museum.
Rinky dink....very small and not very impressive
Just i didnt like tourist trap
Amazing
Skimpy collection
Education, style, variety of exhibits
They need to expand the collection
The exhibits are pretty thin and most of which tells about the current lives of the native people and only vague information about the history.
Interesting for history lovers
Nice
Small Musseum
Enjoyed our visit!
Interesting
Great display.
Not much to see.
Interesting small museum.
