We saw Measure for Measure. As with all Shakespeare, at times a little difficult to follow because of the language. But essentially a #metoo play from several hundred years ago.The acting was very good and it was easy enough to follow despite the archaic language. They setting was modern but it worked very well.It was not theater in the round but somewhat similar because the stage projects out into the audience and it is surrounded by the audience on 3 sides. The building is beautiful. It was a bank building at one time and as you can see from the photo, the ceiling is gorgeous.
Another wonder night at the Chesapeake Shakespeare theater. This time we caught their production of Measure for Measure. It was a great show. The cast was just amazing bringing the Bards words to life in modern setting. Cannot recommend seeing it enough. Then again the theater company is always great. The actors are truly professional as they demonstrate their craft. The setting is great - a simple stage where the audience surrounds it on three sides. There is not a bad seat in the house.. although my favorite is on The first row of the mezzanine. If you have a chance... catch a show. Youll thank yourself for doing so.
This was the first time I saw a play at this theater. The space is quite intimate with all seats close to the stage. The seats wrap around three sides of the stage. I didnt go up to the second balcony, but I suspect that those seats, with a downward view of the stage, might not be quite as desirable as the orchestra and first balcony seats. The set of the show that I saw, Alice in Wonderland, was very nicely designed. The acting was over the top, appropriate for this show. The singing was musical, and the dancing was playful. This was an excellent show for the whole family.
What a great place to take in a show! The performances are fantastic, and the musical interludes by the performers before the show and during intermission add an extra-special touch. The staff is always very accommodating and friendly. And if you ask one of the ushers, they will give you a ticket for $5 parking at one of the nearby lots.
Went on a field trip to see A Christmas Carol. I never knew the theater existed. I loved how it is in the round, there are no bad seats. The actors did a great job and I love how diverse they were. Scrooge was fantastic!
Went for A Christmas Carol and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The performers did a great job! Would return for another play.
A wonderful, cozy theater with excellent seating that made you feel part of the performance. Their production of Dracula was a faithful translation of the story, with great acting. Scott Alan Small did a remarkable job with the character Renfield, really conveying his addled madness! My wife and I cannot wait to begin a tradition of being a part of many more of their performances in the future
One of Baltimores best keep secrets! The talent is local, and my daughter and I were amazed at how powerful and talented all the characters were. We took in The Diary of Anne Franks and the cast did a magnificent job... especially Hannah Kelly, who played the part of Anne Frank. The event plays until 5/26... definitely worth the visit!
Great performance. The effects, actors, and seats were all nice and the show was very cozy. Consessions are expensive. Well worth the price for the show overall.
AWESOME place! Tickets are pretty reasonably priced and you can also catch a dress rehearsal for a discount. My boyfriend and I have seen a few shows here now and love the casual atmosphere. All seats have good views of the stage.
Loved the venue and thoroughly enjoy the production of Measure by Measure with highly creative contemporary adaptation. Looking forward to returning...
A theatrical gem hidden in the midst of downtown Baltimore. Absolutely a must if you like live theater and not been to Chesapeake Shakespeare Theater.
Ive seen a few plays here before, and this was my first time serving as an usher. The theater is beautiful with nooks of books and music in the upper mezzanines, and the stage is a lovely intimate setting made warmer by the bar service at evening shows. The actors and staff are always welcoming and kind. Ive enjoyed every time Ive visited, and think it is well worth making it part of a day or evening outing.
Beautiful theatre with intimate seating. Fabulous costumes and incredible sets. Last nights show had reserved seating on padded benches. Scene transitions utilize the musical talents of the cast members very well. The play was entertaining although rather long. The second act moved along more quickly than the first. A thorough reading of the program beforehand will be most beneficial. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company provides an enjoyable evening in a beautifully restored venue.
This was my first live Measure for Measure and it was wonderful. Not a weak link in the cast. A few forgotten (recovered) lines as may be expected on a first preview. But the tenor, the meaning of the language, and the depth of emotion was solid. It is also remarkably funny in spots--notably those spots involving the tapster Pompey (CSC Resident Acting Company member Terrance Fleming) and longtime convict Barnardine (Associate Member and Teaching Artist Kathryne Daniels). M4M is maybe the problemiest of the problem plays; theres only so much actors can do to mitigate the intrinsic ickiness of the plot, other than put a human face on it. In that endeavor, this gang succeeds brilliantly. Go see it!
Just saw Diary of Anne Franke and was blown away by the quality of the acting, sets, sound quality and overall production value. The theater seating is comfortable and views of the stage are free of obstructions. There are light snacks and beverages available prior to the performance and during the intermission. The layout of the facility is simple yet elegant and warm and inviting. They also host after school and summer youth production programs.
Nice play (DRACULA). Kind of small, but comfortable. Very well organized.
Chesapeake produces modern-style Shakespeare plays (with some others thrown in.) Its got high production values and a beautiful space in a converted bank. One of the most comfortable and beautiful spaces in Baltimore. The stagecraft is excellent. For example, they made the bear in Winters Tale out of shadow and some puppet parts, and it had a twenty foot arm span and looked amazing. This was my first season ticket in Baltimore and its always been among the best. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
The performance of Anne Frank was remarkably excellent! There is not a bad seat in the house and parking at Arrow for $5 is wonderful. The play was a heart-wrenching experience but we left feeling good about having been part of it.
Very good performances, intimate setting, all seats surround the stage so theres no bad seats, very friendly and cordial. Love it, also its an excellent date night paired with a nice dinner before the performance!
Saw A Christmas Carol cant wait to go back
Measure for Measure was one of their best productions ever! Superb!
Quality production. Not a bad seat in the house. Innovative and intimate.
Excellent! Took our students on a field trip to see Romeo and Juliet. I have never seen students so engaged and entertained by literature. The cast was outstanding! I can’t wait to take next years group of kids.
Yet small but charming intimate space.
I really enjoyed the reenactment of Romeo and Juliet! The actors captured your attention with their emotions and the set was simple yet efficient. I cant wait to go back!
This place was a waste of money. 1. I spent $155 for seats that appeared to be limited but upon getting there, it was actually more seats available that couldve been at a cheaper cost. What a ripoff. 2. During the performance, the drink and snack bar is closed. I am pregnant and often thirsty. They should not have this closed. There was only one intermission. 3. There is no walking space in between the seats. Basically, when one person has to get up, others have to move to accommodate them. The tickets were overpriced and these inconveniences made it not worth it. Spend the money at the hippodrome or the lyric.
Very talented and professional company in a wonderful space. Audience sits very close to the stage on three sides, so you get very involved. And the many balconies, catwalks and such are fully utilized as an extension of the stage. And theres a play area for children during the show with a video feed for parents to still see the show.
Absolutely lovely production of A Christmas Carol. My 8 and 10 year old companions were transfixed. The staff, ushers, and performers were so friendly and helpful. The theater is so beautiful! My first visit, but certainly not my last. Congrats to all, and thank you.
Great place to see a show...and done very well.
Went to see A Christmas Carol tonight. Its my mothers favorite and it was amazing. The stage production was awesome for the ticket prices. The only problem that I had was that the seats where very uncomfortable. It was a great night at the theater.
Great community of actors, love the ambiance!
The building that houses the theatre has a lot of history. The performance of the play was excellent and the special effects were great. We had great seats
Great theater! My play was Red Velvet, by Lolita Chakrabarti. This seat is at the very top in the center. Great view from the location. You can make out every detail. The sound in the room was really good and clear.
Great, intimate, theater in the round! There are no bad seats. Actors are amazing, sing prior to the performance and mingle with the audience during intermission and after the show. Two bars provide beer, wine, sodas, coffee and snacks. Parking is only $5 at a garage one block away with the coupon provided at the theater. Lots of local eateries close by.
I almost feel bad. Every play I have gone to here has been spectacular, yet, the theater is so small that there is a limit on the number of people that can enjoy it. That means that every seat is amazing. Everyone is right on the action. Its unbelievable that we have such an amazing theater right here in downtown.
Built into an old bank, the inside is truly beautiful and is designed in a similar style to Londons Globe Theater. The balcony was a little hard to see in the front row but there was definitely a grandness to the stage. The show was pretty good, a bloody performance of Julius Caesar in modern dress. Their attention to the language was definitely on point.
Wonderful trip for homeschool mom. Amazing Romeo and Juliet play!
Awesome Awesome Show... Dracula was a true treat!!
Their new building is beautiful and very reminiscent of the globe. Not to mention that all the seats are close to the stage so it feels very personal, and there is a high level of production value in their plays. Definitely recommend, and its easy to walk a block down to the inner harbor before or afterwards and to make a day out of it.
It was amazing! Credit to the cast and crew for putting on such an entertaining show.
My first visit. I had a great time. Set design, costumes and actors were excellent. I hope to attend another soon . A wonderful experience.
Weve seen numerous plays here over the past few years, and they are phenomenal! Between the quality of the productions and their dedication to customer service, this has become one of our favorite places in Baltimore. Its always great to grab a glass of wine and talk with the actors after the show. And if youre looking for budget-friendly theater, check out their preview nights for $16 a ticket!
Every seat has a good view, but the seats are not very comfortable. The quality of the productions is generally good. I didnt like the script of Red Velvet but the acting and costumes were good. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is much better than Baltimore Shakespeare Factory, and should be supported.
Went to see A Christmas Carol and as always the performance was amazing! Its a really beautiful theatre too.
Fine performances of classic theater. The productions are not modernized--the characters wear the clothes of the periods in which the plays were written. The seating is uncomfortable.
Great theatre in an old bank building. They did their best to preserve the original features of the building while adding seats and a stage. Beautiful ceilings and great performances.
I enjoyed the stage performance. Excellent artists delivery and believable props.
A beautiful building which used to be a bank transformed into a theater. The seats are double or triple fold up benches. A bar on the main floor and 1st mezzanine. I will mention the kids room what is available for youngsters getting antsy. There are also the costumes you may try on and take pictures with. We went to see Romeo and Juliet with my son who is covering the book at school. The play was great and the actors very well rehearsed. This is certainly a great place to take you family.
The play was really entertaining and enjoyable, the bathroom were spotless. The cast talked to us and took pictures after.
A small but very intimate venue. Ensemble very talented and creative approaches to old standards.
Saw A winters tale by Shakespeare. Really good play and performers. Watching the show while having a beer was nice too. I would go again
An absolutely beautiful building, wonderful actors and staff. Great play. You should go!
I loved the play of Ann Franks diary
Incredible intimate theater with great acting. They also do non-Shakespeare plays. Even when sold out it is not overcrowded...which means you can get a drink and snack at intermission. They do have an agreement with a garage just to the south and will validate parking.
In terms of the quality of productions, they are nothing less than a Baltimore jewel. I have upgraded my rating after seeing Red Velvet. Hoping to engage more this year.
Small intimate venue.First mez seats are excellent
Went here on a date to see A Christmas Carol - a great show with lots of Baltimore jokes which were good for some laughs. The venue itself is outstanding, I thought. There are no bad seats in the house. If you bring your kids and they get fussy during the show, there is a kids play room in the old bank vault. Neato! And, as shown in the photo, they do sell alcoholic beverages. House wine is on tap for $5 per glass. Ill be back!
Small cozy theater with 3 floor seating. I highly recommend getting seats all the way at the top for a unique experience
I love the atmosphere. Sometimes the acting can be a little uneven, but tonights performance of She Stoops to Conquer was terrific.
Amazing plays. The best. A great space too.
Nina is very nice give her a raise
It was wonderful, the performance, the bar, the setting. Everything. I subscribed to the season after this performance.
Our group of family and friends attended last nights performance of Richard III. It was fantastic as always. Vince Eisenson was wonderfully contemptible and malicious in the lead role. The entire cast deserves rave notices. The production was well paced and the staging memorable.
Beautiful theater. Red Velvet was so well done that it sparked our interest to further look into the life of Ira Aldridge....and the actors were excellent!
A quaint and beautifully done theatre.Saw Alice in wonderland here- was fun!
The performances are high quality and the theater is top notch. Only drawback is the high cost of tickets for the performances.
Excellent performance of the play RED VELVET. Fair priced seats, casual setting. Recommended for everyone!!
We got season tickets a few (3 or 4) years ago when they were discounted for the first year in the new theater on the recommendation of a friend. We have renewed every year since. Our kids are 15 and 12 now and have come with us every year. The facility and staff were very friendly to them, even when they were young, although I wouldnt go much below 8 years old. The bench seats are great for the little one of she wants to cuddle with us and sleep if she loses interest. There is a great kids room (in the old bank vault so it soundproof) with a big screen showing the play so you wont miss it when you are with your little one.The seat are comfortable enough, but the high seats in some rows hurt my back although some love them. The benches in the middle rows do not have enough leg room for me (Im 62). The front rows are fine. So all in all, different options to suit different people. The seating wraps 3/4 of the way around the stage. The performance are very good and the staging is creative, entertaining and well done. I say this with the background that my wife is British and was a regular theater goes there and we have all been to the Globe Theater in London and watched the Royal Shakespeare Company in Shakespeare Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon, where my in-laws live (nephew goes to the school Shakespeares school). Performers are accessible after the show and mingle with the crowd. They are great with engaging the kids, talking to them before and after the show and making direct eye contact with them while on stage -sometimes even smiling or winking at them while acting! Nevertheless, the performances are professionally done with excellent acting and good sets.2 bars and snacks available although predictably, extremely pricy. One bar is open after the show where staff, actors and patrons are welcome to gather. They have an arrangement with a parking garage 3 blocks away where parking is $5 with a show voucher. Theater tickets are very affordable. With season tickets, adults are under $30 and kids under $20 per show. They have always been very accommodating about moving our tickets to another night when something comes up. They also have matinees which might be better for younger kids. All in all, an entertaining and special way to spend an evening on a family outing or a date night at a great value.
Welcoming theatre doing interesting plays - go see one!
Outstanding production of Measure for Measure
Beautiful & Spacious. Will definitely return!
Great cozy stage, beautiful inventive sets, interactive troop members. Wonderful kids room for fidgity kids.
Saw A Christmas Carol. Wonderful production.
We thoroughly enjoyed Alice in Wonderland. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company productions are great family entertainment!
Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is my home. As a haven for artists, its productions bring a diverse wealth of talent and community leaders. This is the place to bring your families to enjoy the language and life of William Shakespeare.
Every performance is a delight! Great for kids, top notch performances. The family room for wiggly kids has closed circuit TV so you dont miss anything. Dont miss them!
Wonderful production. Quite entertaining.
A really nice space to see a very personal presentation of Shakespearean classics, as well as newer productions.
Intimate venue. Quality production.
Beautiful stage and seating areas. Seems to be overly expensive for the production I saw, but I suppose they need to pay a lot to maintain the space?
Great space. Beautiful theater. Nice bar
Yet another excellent reason to come to downtown Baltimore. Top-notch professional theater in a great venue.
It was a great show in a beautiful theatre....
Beautiful theatre, very friendly staff, comfortable, bench seating! Recently saw a top notch production here and highly recommend!
Great Venue, really cool old building. I saw A Fools Paradise and it was a lot of fun!
Fantastic! Really enjoyed the performance.
Red Velvet was one of the best productions we have seen.
I love this place very beautiful love what they did to the old bank, been here 2xs thus far. This theatre will remain on my venue list of place to go!
